Couple that with the undisputed legacy of Alice In Chains, the unforgettable live spectacle of Korn and the hits of Bush, and we’re in store for a truly legendary weekend,” comments Joe Litvag, Executive Producer of Rocklahoma for AEG Live.
Rocklahoma is located just 45 minutes northeast of Tulsa, in Pryor, OK. The “Catch the Fever” Festival Grounds is a premier destination for a multi-day festival and includes onsite camping with access to restrooms and shower house, a general store for campers, VIP reserved seating, hospitality areas and much more.
Established in 2007 as a classic rock destination festival with the motto “life, liberty and the pursuit of rock,” Rocklahoma was revamped in 2010 as organizers teamed with AEG Live to create an event encompassing a much broader mix of classic, current and up-and-coming rock artists. In 2011, a record-breaking crowd of over 35,000 fans turned out for the festival, which raised over $10,000 for the American Red Cross as part of their tornado relief efforts in nearby Joplin, MO. In 2012, a national television audience was able to experience many Rocklahoma band performances in HD when AXS TV aired live coverage of the festival.
Rocklahoma marks the final event of the 2013 World’s Loudest Month. Created in partnership by AEG Live and Right Arm Entertainment, the World’s Loudest Month features the biggest names in rock music performing in five distinct U.S. concert atmospheres: Welcome To Rockville, Carolina Rebellion, Rockfest, Rock On The Range, and Rocklahoma. In 2012, the World’s Loudest Month featured over 100 artists playing for more than 200,000 rock music fans across the country on five consecutive weekends, confirming that rock music is as vital as ever.
Rocklahoma is proud to be sponsored by Bud Light, Hard Rock (presenting the Hard Rock 2nd Stage), Jägermeister, and Monster Energy.
ROCKLAHOMA – Life, Liberty & The Pursuit Of Rock!
0 Success and Accolades Follow ‘World’s Loudest Month’ Festivals: Welcome To Rockville, Carolina Rebellion, Rockfest, Rock On The Range and Rocklahoma
Don’t believe the hype that rock n’ roll is dead… The World’s Loudest Month has officially come to a conclusion for 2012 having hosted over 100 artists and played for more than 200,000 rock music fans across the country on five consecutive weekends. Created in partnership by AEG Live and Right Arm Entertainment, the World’s Loudest Month featured the biggest names in rock music performing throughout five distinct concert atmospheres in what can only be described as the official confirmation the often-maligned genre is thriving.
“The World’s Loudest Month is a testament not only to the artists that are grouped into this format but to the fans that have always shown their loyalty by spending their hard-earned money to come out and support what we do,” said Joe Litvag, co-executive producer of four of the five WLM festivals. “Every time I hear someone say that rock is going away or read articles that talk about the demise of rock, I smile. Rock music is alive and well and growing, and the success of the World’s Loudest Month proves just that.”
Kicking the month off was the return of Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville , FL on Sunday, April 29. Taking place at Metropolitan Park, this one-day concert drew a sell-out crowd and saw performances from 24 local and national rock artists including: Shinedown, Korn, Evanescence, Five Finger Death Punch & many more.
Just up the road in Rockingham, NC, the 2nd Annual Carolina Rebellion got started with a campground party on Friday, May 4, and on Saturday, May 5 over 30,000 fans converged on Rockingham Speedway and were treated to performances by Five Finger Death Punch, Staind, P.O.D., Evanescence as well as an epic moment during Korn’s set with former guitarist Head joining the band on-stage for the first time in seven years.
The third weekend in the World’s Loudest Month delivered the biggest one-day rock music festival in the United States with RockFest in Kansas City on May 12. Celebrating its 20th year and cementing itself in concert history, the legendary event sold-out for the 8th consecutive year with 55,000 in attendance. Fifteen bands rocked for over 12 hours, including Adelitas Way, Theory of a Deadman, Slash, Volbeat, Cavo & more. As an added bonus, headliners Shinedown filmed the live performance video for their upcoming single “Unity” in front of the massive ‘sea of people’ that only RockFest can bring.
May 18-20 featured the nation’s most-acclaimed active rock festival, Rock on the Range in Columbus, OH at Crew Stadium. Kicking off ROTR’s 6th year, the party started on Friday night with the “Friday Night 4Play” featuring Foxy Shazam and Black Tide. Saturday saw sets by Incubus, Shinedown, Chevelle, P.O.D., Five Finger Death Punch and Cypress Hill. Sunday’s highlights included sets by acts like The Darkness, Volbeat, Anthrax, Megadeth, and for the first time ever, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson on the same stage. Once again the fans and bands showed that Rock on the Range truly is “Where Rock Lives.”
The World’s Loudest Month concluded in Pryor, OK on Memorial Day Weekend with Rocklahoma, a three-day camping festival unlike any other. Over 30,000 fans celebrated the Holiday by enjoying bands on four different stages, and memorable performances included sets by Creed, Rob Zombie, Chickenfoot, Megadeth, Jackyl, Theory of a Deadman, Cavo, Slash, Volbeat, Puddle of Mudd and Hellyeah. And, for the first time ever, over 30 million fans throughout the United States could check out eight full hours of live concert coverage from Rocklahoma on Mark Cuban’s ‘HDNet’ helping to spread the word of Rocklahoma: “Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Rock.”
Gary Spivack of Right Arm Entertainment adds, “We’re finally able to come up for air after an amazing month. The World’s Loudest Month proves to the planet that rock n’ roll is alive and kicking doors down. Right Arm is already looking forward to making WLM in 2013 even bigger and better. To echo what our partner Joe Litvag said—any demise of rock music by critics and naysayers has been greatly misguided.”

25 years after the release of the legendary “Night Of Passion” album, German hard rock band MAD MAX returns with the original lineup – Michael Voss (lead vocals, lead guitars), Jürgen Breforth (rhythm guitars), Roland Bergmann (bass, vocals) and Axel Kruse (drums) – and a new studio album, Another Night Of Passion, due on March 27, 2012 via SPV/Steamhammer. “The new record could have been a direct [follow-up] to ‘Night Of Passion’ in terms of its stylistic direction – no ballads, no keyboards, just purebred rock songs – naturally in a contemporary sonic guise,” explains MAD MAX guitarist Jürgen Breforth, who recorded the new CD with vocalist Michael Voss, bassist Roland Bergmann and drummer Axel Kruse.

0 Mad Max – Another Night of Passion (2012)
Mad Max might not be a familiar name amongst most U.S. rock fans, but maybe they should be. This band has been releasing new music since 1982! They haven’t made a major impact on the U.S. rock scene, but their music is very good, and they are a band worth checking out. I enjoyed Michael Voss’ vocals on the recent Michael Schenker album, Temple of Rock, so I have been looking forward to checking out his band, Mad Max. On their latest album, Another Night of Passion, the band has reunited with their 1987 lineup, to release an album that 80’s hard rock fans are sure to love.
If the Rocklahoma music festival ever needed a theme song, Mad Max has taken care of that with their song “Rocklahoma”. Fans of the music festival need to give this song a listen, you are sure to love it!
Another Night of Passion is packed full of catchy songs with plenty of hooks. Give the songs “40 Rock”, “You Decide” and “Welcome to Rock Bottom” a listen. You will likely be as hooked as I am.
If that is not enough to pique your curiosity, there are also a couple of excellent rockers with the songs, “Metal Edge” and “Back and Alive”. The album closes out on a strong note. with an excellent instrumental track, “True Blue”.
I have been enjoying Another Night of Passion, and I think you will too. Another Night of Passion will be released on March 26th, 2012. You can pre-order it at this link. Don’t miss out on one of the better releases of 2012!

The “Catch the Fever” Festival Grounds is a premier destination for a multi-day festival and includes on-site camping with access to restrooms and shower house, a general store for campers, VIP reserved seating, hospitality areas and much more.
The festival celebrates its 6th year in 2012.

ROCKLAHOMA 2011:
RECORD BREAKING ATTENDANCE OF OVER 35,000;
FESTIVAL RAISES MORE THAN $10,000 FOR
AMERICAN RED CROSS JOPLIN TORNADO RELIEF
A record-breaking crowd of over 35,000 fans were on hand May 27-29 to celebrate at ROCKLAHOMA 2011, the Memorial Day Weekend camp and rock festival that features a mix of the best classic bands and today’s top rock artists. ROCKLAHOMA guests enjoyed ideal mild sunny weather throughout the festival at “Catch the Fever” Festival Grounds in Pryor, OK. In addition, over $10,000 was raised at ROCKLAHOMA for the American Red Cross Joplin Tornado Relief.
“When we got involved with ROCKLAHOMA last year, the goal was to try to help reinvent the festival without alienating the long-time fans or losing the ‘magic’ that had been created,” commented Joe Litvag, executive producer of ROCKLAHOMA for AEG Live. “In 2011 we proved that the plan is working, as the festival saw its highest attendance to date and the fans’ experience was even more over-the-top than they thought possible. Now we’ve got to focus on topping it next year!”
ROCKLAHOMA 2011 featured performances from top rock artists including: Mötley Crüe, Poison, Staind, Whitesnake, Seether, Papa Roach, Hinder, Saving Abel, Skillet, Sick Puppies, Sebastian Bach, Black Label Society, Drowning Pool, My Darkest Days, Rev Theory, All That Remains, Escape The Fate, Cavo, The Gracious Few (featuring members of Live and Candlebox), Hail the Villain, Pop Evil, Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights, Taddy Porter and many more.
“ROCKLAHOMA is a great rock n’ roll event,” noted Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe. “I played it in ‘07 and it was great to be back there and have Mötley Crüe do it. After getting warmed up at ROCKLAHOMA and in South America and Mexico we’re excited to launch this new, huge production on our headlining run in the U.S. this week.”
“We had a blast playing for the ROCKLAHOMA crowd,” said Whitesnake’s David Coverdale. “We hope we get invited back…Too much fun! Our thanks to all involved for such great hospitality.”
Staind guitarist Mike Mushok agreed: “It was really an honor to be able to play with such a diverse group of bands and be one of the headliners for what turned out to be a record-breaking year for the festival. We would like to thank both ROCKLAHOMA and especially the fans for making the night an unforgettable experience for us.”
The media also raved about ROCKLAHOMA. John Hall of TulsaToday.com wrote that “festival organizers saved the best for last as the festival grounds were packed throughout the day on Sunday…As the sun began to set, a quick look around the festival grounds revealed a sea of people as far as the eye could see…With the festival gaining momentum each year, one can hardly wait to see what organizers have in mind for Rocklahoma 2012 (May 31, 2011).”
ROCKLAHOMA also used the mass gathering of rock fans to generate some community awareness and good will. The festival is proud to have raised over $10,000 for the American Red Cross as part of their tornado relief efforts in nearby Joplin, MO. Litvag added, “Not an hour went by the entire weekend where our thoughts didn’t go back to our friends in Joplin. We’re proud of their courage, and every person on site, each fan, each worker, each artist, is happy we could do something to assist them.”
Stay tuned to www.rocklahoma.com in the coming weeks for photo galleries of the festival. In addition, fans who missed the opportunity to buy a t-shirt or other souvenir at the ROCKLAHOMA merch booth can purchase items online at www.rocklahoma.com.

4 Vie’s Verses – Upcoming Hard Rock Festivals Worth Visiting
Spring has finally arrived. Gone are the cold, snowy days of winter and entering are the warmer, sunny days of spring. And with the arrival of spring, summer and the summer hard rock festivals are right around the corner. Rock festivals are the best way to enjoy some of your favorite bands all at once without breaking the bank. The only challenge is deciding which festival to attend. For this edition of Vie’s Verses, I’ve outlined some of the most promising festivals of 2011 both in the USA and Europe (for you world travelers).
Europe
For those fans that are a little more daring, or just wish to see another country while they enjoy their metal, Europe has some great rock festivals to attend. Below are the two most popular festivals. They are also the two with the hottest lineups in rock.
Download Festival – June 10th – June 12th
Taking place in Donington Park, UK, Download Festival is a world renowned metal fest. Every year, Download is able to secure some of the biggest names in rock and this year is no exception. With acts like Def Leppard, Alter Bridge, System Of A Down, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Linkin Park, Black Stone Cherry, The Gaslight Anthem, Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, and Twisted Sister gracing the stage, Download simply rocks. Ticket packages are available that include camping for 5 nights and access to all three days of the concert starting at 190 pounds, which is roughly 380 American dollars. If you plan on visiting the UK this summer, early June would be the perfect time to attend.
Wacken – August 4th – August 6th
If you haven’t already obtained your tickets for this festival, then all I can say is good luck. Wacken is officially sold out, but tickets can be found through various ticket broker sites across the internet. Taking place in Schleswig Holstein, Germany for the past 20 years, Wacken is one of the most well known international metal festivals in existence. This year’s bands on the bill include: Airborne, Bullet, Crashdiet, Helloween, Iced Earth, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Sepultura, and Suicidal Tendencies. If you like British or Swedish heavy metal, this is the one place where you can see a lot of those bands. Since this festival is officially sold out (for the sixth year in a row) ticket prices can range anywhere from just over face value to ridiculously insane.
USA
If travelling abroad is not your thing, there are plenty of great festivals to attend right here in the good old United States of America. Below are some of the most well known and popular spring/summer rock fests for 2011.
M3 Festival – May 13th – May 14th
The M3 Festival is a hair metal lover’s delight. Taking place in Columbia, Maryland, M3 is in its third year and just keeps getting better and better. The lineup this year includes Kix, LA Guns, Warrant, Hurtsmile, Faster Pussycat, Mr. Big, Slaughter, Sebastian Bach, Tesla, and Whitesnake. Tickets can be purchased for an affordable $45 for lawn seats. Seats in the amphitheater go for $95, and for those wanting to get the whole VIP experience, VIP tickets are available for $195. With so many great bands on the bill, this is the festival to attend if you love hair metal.
Rock On The Range – May 21st – May 22nd
Celebrating their fifth year of rocking the masses at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, Rock On The Range is a modern rock lover’s dream festival. No classic or hair metal bands are featured here. Rock On The Range only brings the new rock. Acts that are performing this year include: Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Pop Evil, Hinder, Black Label Society, Alter Bridge, Staind, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, and A Perfect Circle. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and cost between $100 – $130 before fees. Single day tickets can be had for $60 – $70 before fees. If modern rock is your thing, then Rock On The Range is your festival.
Rocklahoma – May 27th – May 29th
Rocklahoma is celebrating their fifth year of entertaining hard rock fans in Pryor, Oklahoma. What started out as one of the best hair metal festivals in existence has recently morphed into a hair metal/modern rock fest. While last year’s bill was not so solid, this year’s offering more than makes up for it. With featured acts Motley Crue, Poison, Whitesnake, Staind, Black Label Society, Papa Roach, Hinder, Skillet, and Pop Evil all performing, this looks to be one fine weekend for music lovers. Granted, there are a lot of bands on the bill that I never heard of, but there are a lot of bands on the bill that are exceptional. Camping is available on site and ticket prices for this festival range from $139 for general admission to $350 for VIP. For a three-day event, those are decent prices.
Rock Fest – July 14th – July 17th
Rock fest has been around for 18 years. Taking place in Cadott, Wisconsin, this festival mixes hard rock acts both old and new. This is a great festival for fans of multiple metal genres. This year’s acts include Avenged Sevenfold, Hinder, Kid Rock, Cinderella, Slaughter, Three Days Grace, Rob Zombie, Saliva, Seether, Tesla, Heart, and Def Leppard. Tickets are a little pricey compared with other summer festivals, but with the bands on this bill, the entertainment value is high. General admission tickets go for $155, while reserved seating is $250, and the all access VIP experience is $500.
Rock USA – July 14th – July 16th
Solid rock. No Limits. That is the slogan for Rock USA, the rock music festival being held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. There are definitely some solid rock bands on the bill for this fest. Featured acts include: Journey, Cheap Trick, Puddle Of Mudd, Buckcherry, Warrant, Dokken, Korn, and festival headliners, Kiss. If you purchase your tickets prior to May 6th, a three-day pass can be had for $79. After May 6th, the price increases to $129. The early bird gets the discount. Rock USA offers a multitude of VIP packages that range between $89 – $329, if purchased by May 6th. Prices for the VIP packages spike after that date. With a mix of classic and modern bands, Rock USA looks to be a great summer metal festival.

5 Rockitt Rant – A Breakdown of the 2010 Music Festivals
It seems to me that this year, as well as in years past, Europe has been kicking the United States ass when it comes to major music festivals. I decided to breakdown some of major festivals this year and see which ones provided the most bang for your buck.
The Download Festival is quite possibly the biggest music festival anywhere. The promoters for this festival understand that if you want to draw a lot of people, you have to have a major headliner. This year, the Download festival has more than one with AC/DC, Aerosmith, Megadeth on the same bill. Add Motorhead, Rage Against The Machine, and Stone Temple Pilots to the bill, and you have the makings of one incredible rock show. The lineup for this festival is already stout, and they will be adding more bands soon. Will Aerosmith implode before then? Who knows? I imagine the paycheck must be pretty fat for big rock shows. Maybe money has healed all wounds with them. I know that if I lived in Europe, there is no question where I would be that weekend. This festival drew 120,000 in 2009, and will probably exceed that in 2010.
The six festivals I chose are Download, The Stockholm Rockout, The Sweden Rock Festival, Rock on the Range, Rocklahoma, and M3. There are many more that I didn’t consider in this including Sonisphere and Hard Rock Hell. Any way you look at it, Europe has the U.S. beat on major rocks festivals.
Why is the United States getting the major shaft on major festivals? What can be done to turn this around? What are your thoughts about this? This rock fan is fed up!

The Sweden Rock Festival has been around since ’98, and seems to get bigger and better every year. This multi-day festival has a good mix of hard rock and heavy metal. It would be this metalhead’s dream to see some of the band’s on this bill play live. With 4 days at $295.00, the price is pretty steep for the average rocker. I am guessing most folks will buy a single day ticket, and catch some of their favorite bands and live with it.

The M3 Rock Festival is a hair metal festival in Columbia, Maryland that is celebrating its second year. This is the only music festival that I attended last year, and will probably be the only one in 2010 as well. If you are really low on dough, you can cough up $35.00 for a lawn seat (an pray it doesn’t rain). The average price in the pavilion is $75.00. For 14 bands this isn’t a bad deal at all, although I admit there are a couple of bands on the bill that I could skip. Seeing the Scorpions on their farewell tour is a must! I am looking forward to this one!

Rock on the Range has become the premiere modern rock festival in the U.S. This is the festival’s fourth year, and the festival promoters always manage collect a large amount of radio friendly bands. This year, I believe the festival lineup is a lot weaker than the 2009 bill which had Motley Crue, Slipknot, Alice in Chains, Avenged Sevenfold and Buckcherry but it is still a solid bill nonetheless. No single day tickets are available for this show, which is a complete disappointment to me. Is Godsmack or Rob Zombie a true festival headliner? I don’t think so. This festival typically draws about 60,000 over the two day event. My guess is, this year it will be less.

Wow, I understand that the folks at Rocklahoma nearly lost their shirts last year, but this new direction is not a good one. Something had to change, as the attendance was absolutely abysmal in 2009. AEG has taken this hard rockin’ hair metal festival and turned it into Rock on the Range part 2. In years past, Rocklahoma was a destination music festival. Now it is a regional one at best. They still haven’t figured out that you need a headliner to draw folks to a show. While I like ZZ Top & Godsmack, they really are not headliners. While I love Tesla and Cinderella, having them on the bill isn’t enough for me to travel to a multi-day festival. They at least got it right by moving the date to Memorial weekend, when it isn’t 105 degrees in Oklahoma. I am betting that they have alienated the majority of the folks who attended (or played) in this festival in the past. M3 will continue to grow as a result of this. Will the attendance be better than last year? Yes. Will it exceed 25,000 for the three days? Highly doubtful.

The ROCKLAHOMA 2010 line-up includes: ZZ Top, Godsmack, Tesla, Buckcherry, Cinderella, Chevelle, Stone Sour, Theory of a Deadman, Saliva, Saving Abel, Adelitas Way, Janus, Aranda, Burn Halo, Richy Nix, Shaman’s Harvest, Taddy Porter, Like A Storm, Taking Dawn, New Medicine, Year Long Disaster, Brookroyal, Within Reason, Wildstreet, Firstryke, Krank, The Glitter Boys and more very special guests to be announced!
ZZ Top’s Billy F Gibbons commented, “As life-long residents of ‘Baja, Oklahoma,’ Dusty, Frank and I are looking forward to making the northward trek to Pryor in May. The idea of sharing the stage with so many great, cutting-edge bands out there today is most appealing. It’s like rock ‘n’ roll summer camp; does that make us campers or counselors?”
“The new vision for ROCKLAHOMA is to draw a much wider rock audience by exploring more sides of the genre,” commented Joe Litvag, Senior Vice-President of AEG Live and Executive Consultant to the ROCKLAHOMA organizers. “This is such an amazing location for a multi-day camping festival, and I’m proud of the fact that we’ve been able to bring together some true icons of rock to perform alongside many of the hottest news and established rock acts in the country! It is definitely going to be a holiday weekend to remember,” Litvag concluded.
Three-day passes start at only $95 and will go on-sale on Saturday, February 27th at 10am CST, exclusively at http://www.rocklahoma.com. Camping add-ons, VIP packages, and seat upgrades will also be offered at the time of purchase. Festival president Mark Nuessle explains the value and experience that Rocklahoma offers by adding, “It has always been a top priority for Rocklahoma to be an affordable experience for all. Where else can the ultimate rock fan see this many artists for under $100? And for our VIP’s to be able to eat and drink for free, at their leisure, as part of the inclusive VIP experience? These are the elements that really make Rocklahoma a one-of-a-kind rock experience!”
ROCKLAHOMA is located just 45 minutes northeast of Tulsa, in Pryor, OK. The Votes for Best Rock Festival of 2008 was a close one. In fact less than 50 votes seperate our Silver and Gold Award winners.

The 2008 lineup included, Bret Michaels, Jetboy, XYZ, Triumph, Extreme, Armored Saint, Queensryche, Tesla, Firehouse, Jackyl, RATT, Sebastian Bach, Kingdom Come Night Ranger and many more bands. The festival was plagued by terrible weather in 2008, but it was still very much a fan favorite this year.
The voting on the last day of the Reader Awards was intense as fans from several different bands were logging their votes on the last day. Two bands rose above them all, and Jaded Sun nearly claimed the Gold Award in 2008. Nonetheless, Jaded Sun’s new album “Gypsy Trip” is a great new disc, and one you should definitely check out!
Less than 200 votes separated our Silver and Gold winners for Best New Album of 2008. Tesla’s Forever More was my favorite pick of 2008, as was many of yours. “Forever More” is easily one of the better albums in the Tesla catalog. It is one of the must own records in 2008.

2 Glam Rockers Wild August Make Comeback
Dan McCafferty and Kurt Monson had figured their days as rockers in the 1980s hair band Wild August were over for good.
That was before the two Traverse City natives’ former group was rediscovered by Retrospect Records. The company now sells their old recordings on the Web and talked them into getting back together in July for the Rocklahoma music festival, where they played in front of tens of thousands of glam-rock fans.
“It was a great time,” said Monson, who played bass in the band and graduated from Traverse City High School in 1980. “We were all waiting for a reason to get back together. We rehearsed again, did the show and pulled it off.”
The group’s reunion is also the subject of a documentary being filmed by Lior Ben-Aharon. The screenwriter heard about the band because he is a neighbor of its singer, Sullivan Bigg in Los Angeles. He traveled to New York, where most of the band still lives, and to Oklahoma to film rehearsals and the concert.
He is editing the footage he already has and plans to reconnect with members in a few months to see if the opportunity to get back together has made a lasting impact on them.
“My angle with it is, ‘What is it like to get a chance to be a rock star for one more day?'” Ben-Aharon said. He hopes to get the movie on the film festival circuit.
McCafferty is older than Monson, having graduated from St. Francis High School in 1973. The two were acquaintances when they lived here, having played in competing bands in town.
Yet they didn’t become friends or band-mates until they both moved to New York City in the early ’80s. While there, they met through mutual friends and helped form Wild August.
The group had promise. It recorded on independent labels and opened for such acts as Slaughter, Warrant, Ace Frehley of Kiss and in what they said was a mismatch, Katrina and the Waves.
Yet just when they figured they were poised to break through — they were talking to major record labels and they made an appearance on the soap opera “Another World,” a performance that lives on through YouTube — the entire musical world changed.
“Right about our pinnacle was the time Nirvana came around and turned the whole thing on its head, which we kind of felt it needed to do,” Monson said.
The band was disappointed as the era of one-color guitars, leopard-skin tights and big hair ended.
Still, they stayed together until the mid-1990s, even trying to change with the times. But it seemed contrived for them, so they finally called it quits.
Monson now owns and operates a record studio. McCafferty is a studio and live guitarist around New York City and performs with Dee Snyder, formerly of Twisted Sister, and other acts.
In 2006, out of the blue, Retrospect Records contacted them wanting to re-release their music for a new audience.
“I just think their music is fun,” said Sam McCaslin, president of the company, which specializes in hard-rock re-issues. “All the guys are real talented musicians. The songs are very memorable; great hooks. And I liked their look too.”
The group has been one of Retrospect’s best sellers, with fans primarily in the United States, Japan and Germany ordering their CDs. The group also has old and new videos on its Myspace Web site: www.myspace.com/wildaugustband.
When Retrospect secured a stage at Rocklahoma in Pryor, Okla. this year, it asked Wild August to perform a set.
Being a nostalgia act, they dressed similarly to how they did back in the day, but toned it down a bit. They played the second day of the four-day festival, which also included bands like Ratt and Tesla.
Wild August members don’t know how long the newfound interest in them will last.
“It’s probably already over,” Monson said. “But it’s amazing how many younger fans are into this type of music now.”

Tora Tora played a pre-Rocklahoma reunion show at Newby’s in Memphis, Tennessee June 28th.
Check out the the band performing the songs Phantom Rider, and Love’s A Bitch.
0 Black ‘N Blue Reunion Charges Ahead
As previously reported, BLACK ‘N BLUE has launched a reunion in 2008 featuring four original members in Jaime St. James (vocals), Jef “Woop” Warner (guitar), Pete Holmes (drums), and Patrick Young (Bass). The four
members are joined by second guitarist, Shawn Sonnenschein, who has been in the fold since 2003 when the band had played a few dates. Sonnenschein is the replacement for original guitarist, Thommy Thayer, who is currently in KISS.
The band was reactivated earlier this year after St. James departure from Warrant. “My 4 years in Warrant were awesome. I made some lifetime friends and will always cherish that time in my life. That being said, it feels so good to sing the great Black ‘N Blue tunes again,” St. James says.
The band is scheduled to play this year’s Rocklahoma Festival on Saturday, July 12. In addition, the band has also been added to the main stage at the Rock the Bayou Festival in Houston on Labor Day Weekend where they are scheduled to perform on Sunday, August 31. Further show announcements are expected in the coming weeks. There is also a plan to tour the UK and Europe in early November, with further information to be announced shortly.
In addition to the shows, Black ‘N Blue will also hit the studio in the coming months to complete the long awaited released, “Hell Yeah!”. Plans for its release will be announced later this year.
0 Warrant – Ultraphobic (Release Year – 1995)
Warrant has reunited with their original lineup intact in 2008, and will
be one of the headlining acts at Rocklahoma on Saturday, July 12th.
As much as I like the initial releases with the original lineup, I decided to dust off one of Warrant’s later discs, Ultraphobic, which featured Kingdom Come’s Rick Steir on guitar and James Kottak on drums.
I remember when I first heard that a couple of former Kingdom Come guys were joining the band, I was hoping that Warrant might try to approach a classic rock/ Zepplinesque update to their music. That was not the case at all with Ultraphobic.
In 1995, Hair metal was about as popular as diarrhea, but Warrant tried to forge ahead with a darker, grungier sound in an effort to stay relevant in the music scene. The sound of Ultraphobic seemed to follow the heavier sound of the 1992 Warrant record, Dog Eat Dog.
The guitars are are tuned down, and a little grungier on Ultraphobic. For me, this style of guitar playing does not suit Jani Lane’s voice well, and this album suffers as a result.
There are a couple of highlights on this disc. Undertow, isn’t too bad, and Crawl Space is pretty cool. I kind of like the title track, Ultraphobic as well.
Chameleon is a song that would have sounded better if Warrant just stuck to their tried and true sound. The deeper guitar sounds mess up, what could have been one of the better Warrant tracks. There are some cool guitar parts, but this song scream redo.
I have to applaud Warrant for trying to stay relevant in the music scene (although some might argue that they never were relevant). Ultraphobic isn’t a total departure from their signature glam metal sound, but I didn’t care for the varied guitar sounds on this disc. (What was the purpose of that drill sound on Ride #2)
With the classic lineup of Warrant back together, they could rearrange some of the songs on Ultraphobic, and quite possibly turn them into new hits. This isn’t Warrant’s best work, but it isn’t their worst either. This is a middle of the road album, that isn’t as good as the first three discs the band released. Warrant fans will still want to pick this up. All others may want to preview this album on Amazon.com, before buying.
