2 Gemini Five – Sex Drugs Anarchy (Release Year – 2008)

Stockholm, Sweden’s Gemini Five have been cranking out cool sleaze metal since 2003. I believe their latest release “Sex Drugs Anarchy” may be their best effort yet.

On this CD, the band gets a little help by Crash Diet’s Martin Sweet.  Sweet plays guitar on the tracks “Scream 4 Me”, “Stay With Me”, and the title track “Sex Drugs Anarchy”.   The Crash Diet influence plays heavily on the songs on this disc, so much so in fact, that I believe that “Sex Drugs Anarchy” tops the last Crash Diet disc, “The Unattractive Revolution”, and could possibly rival their excellent debut, “Rest In Sleaze”.

In my opinion, the best songs on this disc, are “I Am Hollow”, “Scream 4 Me”, the title track “Sex, Drugs, Anarchy”, “Lay Your Money Down” and “Blood on the Bricks”.

The song “Something’s Gonna Give” kind of bugs me.  There is a part of this song that is almost exactly the same as Cinderella’s “Somebody Save Me“.  The lyrics may be different, but there are parts of the song where the music, and timing is practically the same.  Every time I listen to this song, I want to sing:

“Put your money in a big house
Get yourself a pretty wife
She’ll collect your life insurance
When she connects you with a knife”.

Try it, the lyrics fit with the music almost perfectly. The rest of the song is different, but the similar parts are uncanny. There are guitar parts on this tune that would do Warren DeMartini proud, so I guess it is a toss up on this one.

The song “Stay With Me” is a pretty cool song, but the fade at the end of the song is completely annoying in my opinion. Even with these minor issues, “Sex Drugs Anarchy” is a pretty enjoyable hard rock disc.  These Swedish sleaze merchants have a hot record on their hands.  The band is making plenty of waves in Europe, it would be great to see them get some support in the U.S. as well.

If you are a fan of hard rock/sleaze and hair metal, you have to check these guys out.

1 Danger – First Touch (Release Year – 2008)

dangerfirsttouchI don’t know what is happening in Sweden, but good music must be busting out the country’s seams. It seems like every time I turn around I stumble on another really good band from Sweden.  Danger is another band that caught my attention with their new six song EP “First Touch”.

So what does Danger sound like? To me their sound is a cross between Crash Diet and older Motley Crue.  The first song on the EP “First Touch” sounds like it could have been on the excellent “Rest In Sleaze” from Crash Diet. This is the first song that I have heard from Danger, and it made me a fan instantly.

“Miss Money” and “California Red” are pretty fun rockers that remind me more of Poison songs, than a Motley Crue ones but I like them nonetheless.

There are days where I would like to crank “Shove It” at maximum value over the speakers in my office.  This should be my new theme song.  My wife likes this one too. 🙂

“On The Run” is a upbeat hair metal anthem, that is as solid of a closing tune as I have heard all year long.

The six songs on First Touch is like getting an awesome appetizer and having the kitchen close before you could order your main course.  It will whet your appetite and leave you hungry to hear more.  This is Swedish sleaze metal at its finest.  Hair metal fans should not hesitate to buy this!

Check out Danger on their myspace page here. You can buy a dangerband2copy of First Touch from the Danger website at this link.

Sometimes it is a mystery to me how some talented bands remain obscure, while bands of lesser talent went on to be the next big thing.

In the case of New York City’s Spread Eagle, they were not short on talent, but seemed doomed to fail the day they signed with MCA. I wonder if things would have been different if this band received a little more support. Their debut came out a little late in the game. Had this record hit two years earlier, Spread Eagle would surely be a household name amongst hard rock fans.

Spread Eagle is an excellent sleaze metal band that has a sound that I would call a cross between Skid Row and Guns ‘N Roses. The music may be a little derivative of those two bands, but it still kicks ass. Their debut album is filled with killer tunes like Broken City, Switchblade Serenade, Dead of Winter, and Scratch Like a Cat. Ray West has a gritty, abrasive voice that works perfectly for this type of metal. Paul Dibartolo plays his ass of on this disc.

Spread Eagle is highly under rated, and this CD is still worth seeking out. This CD was out of print for a while, but it was reissued by Lovember Records in late 2006. Grab a copy of this disc if you can find it!

For more information on Spread Eagle, check out their myspace page.

In 2008, Rob DeLuca carries on in a new band called Of Earth, while Ray West continues on in Hostel Inc. Who knows…..we may not have seen the last of Spread Eagle yet!

4 Erotic Suicide – Abusement Park (Release Year – 1994)

ESAP A four piece sleaze metal band, Erotic Suicide from Oklahoma released their debut CD in 1994. Sleaze Metal
was already dealt its crushing blow from the release of grunge music. Rock music of the glam/sleaze genre released after 1993 is largely unknown by most hard rock fans.

Sadly, Abusement Park is one of the CD’s that was released way too late in the game. If this CD, was released 5 years earlier, this band could have easily been a household name in the hair metal scene.

Erotic Suicide has a sound that I describe as Fasterrrrmed Pussycat meets Poison. It is a sound that was quite common in the late 80’s, and early 90’s. Although the band’s sound is nothing original, it is a disc that I still enjoy from time to time.

This CD is one of the more rare ones in my collection. Finding this one is virtually impossible
withough paying high dollars on EBay. Is it worth the hunt? If you like this style of music, it most certainly is. My favorite cuts on this disc are Can’t Remember, Goin Down and Sweet Summer Nights.

Check out the video below for Can’t Remember and decide for yourself! Happy Hunting!

3 Babylon Bombs – Doin’ You Nasty (Release Year -2006)

Babylon BombsThe Swedish glam metal band Babylon Bombs released their 2nd CD Doin’ You Nasty in 2006.

This CD has a couple of tracks that should be modest hits for the band. The songs Jaded Heart and Hometown Hero are the closest things I have heard to Pop metal in 2007. Both tracks are equally enjoyable.

Louder has more of a punk feel to it, but is a very solid track. Crack of Dawn is a song that seems extremely familiar to me, but I can’t seem to get into it. Something about it reminds me of Faster Pussycat, but the chorus just didn’t do it for me on this tune.

Let It Loose is a well needed tune at this point in the record. It is a catchy tune that gets into your head and doesn’t let go. Slip Away is a slower number, that has a CC Deville like solo in the center of it. It isn’t a perfect song, but it is growing on me.

Starstruck is a sleazy rocker with a killer beat. It is a cool tune that will get your blood pumping. Drop The Bomb keeps the pace of the album going with another good catchy rocker.

Gotta Move On is an up tempo sleazy feast for your ears. This tune is in the vein of Slash era Guns ‘N Roses. Killer Tune! Proud is a slower tune that has a cool 70’s glam vibe to it.

White Trash Beauty kicks it back in gear with another good G ‘N R style tune. Doin’ You Nasty is closed out with another rocking tune called Moonshine Beauty. Party rock doesn’t get much better than this.

The more I listen to Doin’ You Nasty, the more I enjoy it. All that is stopping this disc from exploding in the United States is a better distribution deal. The only online store that I have found that carries this at non import prices is Impulse Music.com. 80’s hard rock fans are going to dig this record. Don’t miss out on one of the better glam CD’s released within the last couple of years! You can check out the Babylon Bombs at this link!

2 CRASHDÏET – Rest in Sleaze (Release Year-2005)

Crashdiet Rest in Sleaze If you want to hear a band that knows how to do 80’s Style Hard Rock right, you need to give Crash Diet’s, Rest In Sleaze a listen. Crashdiet has a sound that is similar to Shotgun Messiah in their prime, and maybe a little bit of Zan Clan. This disc is full of fist-pumping, kick ass rock and roll.

Crashdiet has 4 hit singles in Sweden from this disc, Riot In Everyone, Knokk ‘Em Down, Breakin the Chainz, and It’s a Miracle. This another example of excellent music being released over seas that never gets any attention in the United States!

Sadly, In January 2006, vocalist Dave Lepard committed suicide after being in a deep depression, so will never know how far this band could have gone with this lineup. Judging from this debut effort, they could have been huge globably.

The tunes here speak for themselves. It is great stuff that no hard rock or sleaze metal fan should be without!

You can still pick this up reasonably from CD Inzane. Buy It! You wont be disappointed.
