Steve Vai – The Story of Light

0 Steve Vai to release new solo album THE STORY OF LIGHT August 14 on Favored Nations Records, with guest vocalists including Aimee Mann and Beverly McClellan

Virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer www.Vai.com will release The Story of Light, a new solo album of original material, on August 14. The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment, the label Vai founded in 1999. Its sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist’s acclaimed 2005 album Real Illusions: Reflections (also Vai’s most recent solo studio release).
Although The Story of Light is largely instrumental, the album does feature guest vocalists including singer-songwriter Aimee Mann—dueting with Vai on “No More Amsterdam,” which she also co-wrote—and Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on The Voice. McClellan appears on “John the Revelator,” a track inspired by a vintage recording of blues singer Blind Willie Johnson, whose acid-soaked vocals are in the mix as well. Other highlights include the title track (which opens the album), “Gravity Storm,” “The Moon and I,” and “Velorum.”
Throughout, three-time GRAMMY-winner Vai’s lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and in listeners’ minds in equal measure. The Story of Light follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.
“I’m always pursuing knowledge, I’m a seeker of spiritual equilibrium—and music is a big part of that,” says Vai. “I’ve been obsessed with these kinds of ideas for years.” Looking ahead, Vai envisions a third set of songs that will unravel the mysteries and reveal truths that swirl through both The Story of Light and Real Illusions: Reflections. The completed trilogy, intended to be cinematic—even operatic—in scope, will include lyrics and narration.
The Story of Light is available as of today for online pre-sale orders. This special pre-sale selection of bundled packages is offered exclusively through Vai’s website, www.Vai.com, where complete details on the products and ordering information are available. Each package includes an instant download of a track from the new album personally selected by Vai, “Gravity Storm.”
Following up the 2009 live album Where The Wild Things Are, The Story of Light, is Vai’s 16th solo effort. In support of its release, Vai will begin a tour of North America on August 15th in Fort Lauderdale Florida, accompanied by his band—who are also featured on the new album: Dave Weiner (guitar), Jeremy Colson (drums), Philip Bynoe (bass), and Deborah Hensen (harp, vocals, keyboards).

0 Berkleemusic and Guitar Wizard Steve Vai Join Forces to Deliver Online Guitar Course Featuring Vai’s Signature Techniques
This New Year students around the world will have the chance to study guitar online with Steve Vai, one of music’s most influential guitarists.
Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Berklee College of Music, is unveiling an exclusive new online course with guitar legend, Grammy award-winning artist, and Berklee alum, Steve Vai. Steve Vai Guitar Techniques provides an unprecedented opportunity for musicians from across the globe to take an “under the hood” look at the work of one of music’s most influential guitarists, learn the secrets behind Steve’s unique playing style, and incorporate Steve’s techniques into their own playing. The Steve Vai Guitar Techniques online course builds upon the guitar curriculum Berklee has been providing to students for decades.
“What’s fascinating to me is that the barriers to learning music directly from recognized experts – whether it’s myself or the rest of Berklee’s renowned guitar faculty – no longer exist with online music education,” said Vai. “I’m intimately involved in creating this course, from the crafting of the lesson content, to providing hours of never-before-seen video, and even a dedicated live chat between myself and the online students. This truly is an evolution in the way to teach and learn guitar.”
Since Berkleemusic’s inception, more than 30,000 students from over 130 countries have studied online. Steve Vai Guitar Techniques is another powerful addition to Berkleemusic’s extensive guitar curriculum, which in 2007 received the Distance Learning College Course Award for Guitar Chords 101 from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. Berkleemusic currently offers over a dozen online guitar courses authored and led by Berklee’s esteemed faculty covering all areas of study, both genre-based and technique based.
“We are excited and privileged to have Steve Vai join our portfolio of renowned course authors,” said Debbie Cavalier, Berklee’s Dean of Continuing Education. “This new course and partnership with Vai is a natural evolution of our ongoing dedication to providing innovative courses and incredible opportunities to students around the world.”
Steve Vai Guitar Techniques presents students with the chance to gain a deep understanding of Vai’s death-defying playing styles, repertoire, techniques and musical concepts. This 12-week online course will not only teach students to craft and perform lead lines like those in “Tender Surrender,” “For the Love of God” and “The Attitude Song,” but also will teach students Vai’s distinctive and seemingly impossible techniques such as two-hand tapping, sweep picking, sliding, pull-offs and other ear-bending licks. Each lesson will include play exercises, listening examples, hours of exclusive video, song transcriptions, a performance assignment and more. The course is taught by Vai and members of Berklee College of Music’s guitar department, who provide all students with detailed and personalized feedback on their work on a week-to-week basis.
The course is now open for enrollment for the school’s winter term which begins on January 10, 2011. For more information regarding the course, registration information and to even sample a guitar course, visit Berkleemusic.com. Additional course offerings include Guitar Chords 101, Guitar Scales 101, Blues Guitar, Class Rock Guitar and Rock Guitar Soloing and many more.

The term “Super-Group” describes a band rising out of two of the most creative bands of the past 30 years: YOSO is formed out of TOTO’s brilliant lead vocalist Bobby Kimball and the creative force of former YES members, Tony Kaye and Billy Sherwood, thus equalling the magic of YES with the voice of TOTO. However, YOSO is much more than a combination of two classic rock groups. The band’s debut album “Elements” will debut this Fall in the USA on Frontiers Records. This long awaited release comes with a bonus live CD where the band plays some old and new classics. Their musical blend presents a fascinating combination of the sound of YES (“90125″/”Big Generator” era) and TOTO, with a very interesting and original sound that truly encompasses the styles.

1 STEVE VAI UNLOCKS THE VAULT AND LAUNCHES VaiTunes SERIES
It’s not uncommon for a musician to record more work than they release. In Vai’s case, the Grammy® award-winning guitarist has a digital ocean of snippets in various degrees of completion. Some are leftovers from assorted sessions, projects that were never completed, soundcheck jams, or songs that were specific to a particular venture. “There are enough lonely, unreleased notes in my world to fill an infinity shelf,” says Vai. In between composing new scores for his upcoming performance with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Vai has transformed these snippets into full, lush songs and these rarities are being released as a series of single digital downloads called VaiTunes.
Each release comes with a PDF booklet containing detailed notes about the creation of the song, the story behind the recording, and gear involved. The latest release from the series, “The Moon and I” evolved from a soundcheck jam in Athens, Greece in the spring of 2000. The PDF liner notes allow the listener to follow Vai as he birthed the chord changes in Greece and subsequently watered and fertilized the song ten years later half way around the world in his Encino studio. Equally fascinating is the story of the guitar used to finish “The Moon and I.” Under unique circumstances, Vai recently purchased an original Desert Yellow Ibanez JEM 777DY guitar, a guitar he designed in 1987, from a local pawnshop and named the guitar “Moon.”
Vai plans to offer one track every month or so, each one representing a unique moment in his personal musical history. The releases can be purchased via iTunes and other digital music providers worldwide through www.vai.com/vaitunes.

3 Whitesnake – Slip of the Tongue (1989)
It is hard to believe that it has already been two decades since Whitesnake’s CD, Slip of the Tongue, but 2009 marks the twentieth anniversary of this very successful release for Coverdale and company.
The funny thing is, (to me at least) this album rarely comes up in my play list, and I consider myself a pretty big Whitesnake fan. After listening to Slide it In and the self titled disc from 1987, I can understand why Slip of the Tongue is greatly missing something. It lacks that bluesy edge that made the previous two albums so great. Coverdale is the only remaining member from the previous two recordings, and Slip of the Tongue shows just that. Coverdale’s vocals are great, but his vocals alone can not carry the band.
Steve Vai is an incredible guitar player, and I loved his stint in David Lee Roth’s band, but his style of playing is so different from John Sykes that it gives Whitesnake a completely different sound. I am not knocking Vai as a player, but I am not so sure that he was the right fit for Whitesnake. There is lno bluesy element in Vai’s guitar work, and that is what Slip of the Tongue greatly needed.
Whitesnake’s lineup for Slip of the Tongue was like an all star band of hard rock musicians. Tommy Aldridge (Ozzy Osbourne), Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Quiet Riot), Steve Vai (Frank Zappa, Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth) all recorded with Coverdale for the first time on this release. Even with all of this talent at this disposal, Coverdale could not capture the magic from his previous two releases with this disc.
With that being said, Whitesnake still ripped out a few hits off of this CD, including “Now Your Gone”, “The Deeper the Love” and the band’s reworking of the 1980 Whitesnake classic, “Fool For Your Loving”. (Is Whitesnake the only band to cover themselves?) Some of my favorites from Slip of the Tongue, are the tunes that got less attention, including “Cheap and Nasty”, “Wings of the Storm” and “Judgement Day”.
Slip of the Tongue is far from bad. It just doesn’t quite live up to the Whitesnake legacy. From a hair metal perspective, it is very good, but as a Whitesnake release it is slightly above average. You can score copies of this CD for under $3.00 at this link.

0 MUSICIANS INSTITUTE Awards Honorary Degree to Guitar Legend STEVE VAI
VAI was Keynote Speaker For The Graduating Class 2009
Musicians Institute awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree to legendary rock guitarist, recording artist, producer, and composer Steve Vai. The award was officially conferred during MI’s summer graduation ceremony held on September 18 at LA’s Wiltern Theatre.
After first achieving prominence as guitarist for the late Frank Zappa, Vai has gone on to win multiple Grammys, repeatedly top critics’ and readers’ polls, and earn gold and platinum records while becoming the personification of contemporary guitar virtuosity. His latest concert DVD, Where the Wild Things Are, is set for release September 29th on Favored Nations.
Describing why MI selected Vai for the honor (only the second awarded in the school’s history), Vice President of Education Beth Marlis said, “Steve Vai has not only inspired countless musicians around the world and played a major role in the evolution of modern rock guitar, he also embodies MI’s ideal of the artist-educator who combines relentless pursuit of his creative vision with a sense of responsibility for mentoring the next generation.”
