Serj Tankian has just released a performance clip of “Empty Walls” from his upcoming Elect the Dead Symphony CD/DVD release, due in-stores March 9th.

On March 16th, 2009, the Grammy Award winner and one of rock’s most unconventional front men, took the stage at the majestic Auckland Town Hall in New Zealand with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to perform a very special orchestral interpretation of his critically acclaimed debut solo album Elect the Dead. The dynamic one-off performance was recorded and filmed in HD by six cameras, and the dramatic result has been captured in Elect the Dead Symphony.

Elect the Dead Symphony will be released as a deluxe CD/DVD 6 panel digi-pack with an eight page full color booklet, on vinyl in a double gatefold jacket with full color insert, and as a CD-only version. Each version of the packaging features unique images not included in the other formats.

Serj Tankian The name Serj Tankian may give some readers here the deer in a headlight look. For those of you that don’t know the name, Serj Tankian is the lead singer of the Metal band System of a Down.

Serj has recently released his debut solo effort, Elect the Dead.

I always fear when a lead singer from a band puts out a solo effort. The end result is rarely ever equal to the output by the singer’s band.

For those System of a Down fans that are looking for another SOAD like CD, Elect the Dead may come as a disappointment or a complete surprise. Serj took a backseat to guitarist Daron Malakian on the last couple SOAD album, and a few fans were unhappy with the records.

Those longing to here Serj belt out to some new tunes will be quite happy with Elect the Dead. On this record, there are some definite radio ready tracks with Empty Walls and Feed Us. This record gets a little spacey in a Pink Floyd meets metal sort of way. With that being said, I don’t consider all the songs here to be classic.

Elect the Dead certainly has some solid tunes. The song writing is pretty good, and the musical arrangements are unique and interesting. The variety of tunes on this disc also works as its detriment. There are a few tracks that I didn’t care for very much, therefore Elect the Dead isn’t a CD that I will find myself replaying a lot. Nonetheless, Tankian fans and SOAD fans will likely enjoy this record and ought to give it a look.
