Press Quotes From Toronto:

“… the Darkness has come back armed with a helluva lot of killer tunes you might have forgotten how much you liked at the time…It was a non-stop barrage of succinct, high-impact popsmithery that, almost without fail, boiled the best bits of AC/DC, Queen and Thin Lizzy down into three-and-a-half-minute nuggets of rousing, verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus perfection.”

–Ben Rayner, TORONTO STAR, February 2, 2012

“The Darkness delivered a generally solid set that could be aptly described by The Who album: Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy. With Hawkins looking lean and delivering scissor kicks, the group hit the ground running with a foot-stomping Black Shuck as Hawkins easily hit those challenging high notes. And fans definitely showed their love early with hands swaying and singing. Others kept some old-school concert staples alive with cigarette lighters overhead….[new song]…”Concrete,” a jackhammer blast of guitar riffs that got a strong response despite being basically unknown.”

–Jason MacNeil, TORONTO SUN, February 2, 2012

“…incredible enthusiasm and stage presence. All members displayed genuine passion and enjoyment and were clearly glad to be back. Fear not: tired washed out has-beens, they are not.  Highlights included Justin’s acrobatic behind-the-head guitar solo and a HEADSTAND against the drum kit.”

 –Alex Last, MUSICVICE.COM, February 2, 2012 (Toronto)

“Throughout the show, the hard rockers brimmed with their trademark flailing guitar solos, thundering drums and Justin’s magnificent falsetto vocal..The showmanship, so synonymous with the Darkness over the years, was also out in force…Of the new tracks, the gutsy ‘Concrete’ was the best received while ‘Everybody Have A Good Time’ –a tune in the spirit of the band’s ‘Friday Night’ –allowed everybody to do just that.”

–Laurie Lionsdale, LITHIUM MAGAZINE, February 3, 2012 (Toronto)

3 The Darkness To Reform?

  • March 6, 2010

  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

Justin and Dan Hawkins have reportedly held talks about reforming rock band The Darkness. According to The Sun, the brothers are currently demoing new material in a Lowestoft studio. “If their stuff is liked by label staff they will attempt to reunite The Darkness,” said a source.

The Darkness scored a number one album with their 2003 debut Permission to Land, which included the singles ‘Growing On Me’ and ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’.

Their follow-up disc, One Way Ticket to Hell… And Back, charted at number 11, but frontman Justin left the group in 2006 after a spell in rehab. Since leaving, he has worked on musical projects including British Whale and glam rock group Hot Leg.

During a Hot Leg concert in 2009, the Hawkins brothers reunited on stage for a performance of ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’, sparking rumors of a full Darkness reunion.

3 Stone Gods – Silver Spoons & Broken Bones (Release Year – 2008)

  • November 11, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

When The Darkness singer, Justin Hawkins abruptly left the band in 2006, the remaining members decided to carry on without him.

Former Darkness bass player Richie Edwards took over the lead vocals and Toby MacFarlaine joined the band on bass. The Darkness name was jettisoned, and band carried on under the new name, Stone Gods.

The Darkness got a fair amount of airplay on XM Radio’s The Boneyard over the last couple of years, but they were never a band that I could get into very much.  Justin Hawkins vocals were a little over the top, in my opinion.  I wasn’t sure what to expect with The Stone Gods, and much to my surprise, I found this new band much more to my liking.

“Silver Spoons & Broken Bones” starts off with a heavy metal rocker, “Burn the Witch.” This song sounds like it is left over from the NWOBHM era.

“Don’t Drink the Water” fuses together a catchy mesh of classic hard rock sounds and that brings bands like The Who to mind.  The song fuses together classic rock guitar riffs with a punk rock vibe, and even sprinkles in a dash of reggae.  It sounds like a band combination, but this is a really good song.

There are some Black Sabbath like jams on the rocking tune “Defend or Die“.  Richie Edwards vocals keep this song from sounding to sludgy, but the metal riffs are well appreciated by this listener. This is one of those songs that you may not get into on the first listen.  My recommendation is to play it again a few times.  You may grow to appreciate this one as I have.

The Stone Gods show their sense of humor with the tune “You Brought A Knife To A Gun Fight“. This is another catchy upbeat rocker that would not sound out of place on the radio today.  The guitar riffs could have been taken right off of any Buckcherry CD, but that is OK.  I like this style of rock.

“Magdalen Street” is a mid tempo number that has a mix of southern rock styling and some guitar sounds that would more at home on a  Chris Isaak album.  It is a good song, but the sound here is completely different from the rest of tunes on this disc up to this point.

“Where You Coming From” is a modern rock tune with a southern rock flair.  This is another song that grows on you.

Is is just me, or does “Lazy Bones” sound like a lost Soul Asylum track?  I haven’t listened to Soul Asylum for a long time, but this song reminded me of them quite a bit.

“I’m With the Band” and “Wasting Time” both have infectious sing along choruses that will get in your head.

The album closes out with a tongue in cheek rocker “Oh Where ‘O My Beero“.  This song sounds like a lost cut from Def Leppard.

It took me several listens to figure out who I thought Richie Edwards sounded like, and I finally figured it out.  Remember Tommy Paris from Britny Fox?  Edwards has that same raspy vocal style as Paris.  The style of music may be different, but the similarities are there.

“Silver Spoons & Broken Bones” mixes together a variety of genres including hard rock, classic rock, heavy metal and alternative.  For me, the harder tunes are definitely the best ones on this disc, but less heavy tracks are solid as well.  From the songs I have heard from the Darkness, this album does have a different style, and the name change to Stone Gods is quite appropriate.   This album joins a crowded list of solid albums in 2008.

0 Former Darkness Frontman Starts Over with Hot Leg

  • October 16, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

The collapse of his former band, the Darkness, and an unsuccessful attempt to represent the United Kingdom in 2007’s Eurovision Song Contest have hardly dampened Justin Hawkins’ drive.

But the frontman of new rock quartet Hot Leg has quite an act to follow. The Darkness’ huge U.K. success saw the band’s 2003 U.K. chart-topping debut album, “Permission to Land” (Atlantic), sell 1.4 million copies domestically, according to the Official Charts Co.; Nielsen SoundScan puts U.S. sales at 710,000.

The band also collected five top 10 U.K. singles, three BRIT Awards and an Ivor Novello songwriting award. However, after second album “One Way Ticket to Hell … and Back” (2005) failed to scale the same heights, the Darkness imploded in 2006.

“We overachieved, really,” Hawkins said. “But I didn’t love it anymore.” After an extended sabbatical that included a stint in rehab, Hawkins returns with Hot Leg’s debut single, “Trojan Guitar,” an October 20 U.K. release through his own Universal-distributed label, Barbeque Rock Records. A January album follows.

“Some people are going to dismiss it because of the Darkness thing, but that’s just the way it is,” Hawkins said.

Check out Hot Leg on myspace!
