The Throbs have a posted a new live clip of their song, “Come Little Sister” from their 9/24/09 show at Don Hill’s in New York City.
Once upon a time, The Throbs were touted as New York’s answer to Guns N’Roses. Their debut record “The Language of Thieves & Vagabonds”, which was produced by Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Alice Cooper) on Geffen Records should have by all means, made these guys stars. Were they the next Guns N’ Roses? Probably not, but their debut CD is quite good.
Singer Ronnie Sweetheart has gritty vocals that reminds me a lot of Mike Trash from The Erotics and maybe even a little bit of David Johansen from the New York Dolls. His vocals take a little bit of time to get used to, but I have grown to like them quite a bit. Sweetheart’s vocals are quite a bit different from most of the band’s of the early nineties.
The music on this disc is nothing short of fantastic. Big guitars and great piano work saturate this disc. In fact, the keyboards on this disc are handles by Bob Ezrin, with the exception of a couple of guest stars. Little Richard plays the piano on the song, “Ecstasy” and Freddy Mandel (Alice Cooper) handles the
keyboards on It’s Not the End of the World” and “Rip It Up”.
How would I describe this music? Bluesy, ragtime hard rock that should have appealed to both 80′s and 90′s rock fans. The music dabbles with some hints of post Appetite Guns N’ Roses with some guitar sounds that bring KISS to mind. The band might look like an early 90′s hair metal act, but let me assure you, this is NOT a hair metal CD. The Throbs “The Language of Vagabonds and Thieves” is full of good songs that must be heard to be appreciated. Play it LOUD!
This CD has been out of print in the United States for a long time. It was reissued in the UK by Rock Candy Records in 2007. You can still find copies of this CD, for under $5.00 at this link. It is worth every penny!
