5 UFO – Seven Deadly (2012)
Most Hard Rock enthusiasts would agree that it is the presence of a guitar solo that truly defines whether a song should be considered Hard Rock. Should that definition be used as a litmus test to what is or isn’t Hard Rock, then UFO has passed with flying colors. The most enjoyable part of their new disc, Seven Deadly, is the fact that every song gets a guitar solo — rock, the way it ought to be!
It never ceases to amaze me how musicians like UFO that have been around for such a long time can still put out poignant, high quality music for the masses. UFO’s debut album came out in 1970 and they’ve been rocking the world ever since. Seven Deadly is the band’s 22nd record, and while there have been numerous upon numerous lineup changes, original members Phil Mogg and Andy Parker are part of the latest disc.
Combining southern rock, blues, a twinge of 80s metal, and hard riffs, UFO has created an outstanding record that both longtime fans and “Johnny-come-lately” are going to be ecstatic about. The creative outpouring on Seven Deadly is attributable to the band’s veteran dedication to their craft. After 22 albums, one might think the band would decide to rest on their laurels, or release some sub-par material that had been sitting around for years, not making it on other albums. That is definitely not the case with Seven Deadly. UFO proves they still have what it takes and that nothing less than the best will do for the band and their fans.
“Fight Night” kicks the record off in style and immediately brings forth the hard rocking, bluesy sound of UFO. Guitarist Vinne Moore immediately establishes himself as an amazing lead guitarist and the centerpiece of the magnificent music that is bursting from the speakers.
Phil Mogg’s voice has held up well over the years. That is most evident on the track “Angel Station.” This is the slower, prerequisite ballad of the disc, but it is performed with passion and power. Mogg can still hit the high notes and sing with such clarity that it’s hard to believe his age. “Angel Station” is a brilliant song that moves the listener. Mogg does an incredible service to the vocals on this song and the finished piece is proof of his ability with the microphone.
Not enough great things can be said about lead guitarist Vinnie Moore. His best solo comes on the track “The Last Stone Rider.” Combining blues, metal, and finger picking at its best, Vinnie Moore shows some great, flashy techniques with the axe in his hand. His guitar playing prowess is evident all over Seven Deadly and one of the best treats of the album. If you are not a fan of Vinnie Moore, you will be after listening to Seven Deadly” His guitar work takes the album from great to outstanding.
Album closer, “Waving Goodbye,” is a perfect way to end such an esteemed album. A bluesy, ballad that contains another magnificent Moore solo and passionately sung lyrics, this is one of the best songs contained on Seven Deadly and it is worthy of multiple listens. If ever there was a song to add to the joys of summer playlist, “Waving Goodbye” is it.
If you’re seeking new rock from a classic artist that sounds as grand as ever, Seven Deadly by UFO is an album for you. The brilliance of the music and the magnificence of Vinnie Moore make it a record worthy of adding to the collection. UFO has struck gold once again.

2 UFO New studio album “Seven Deadly” will be released in February 2012

Nothing would be easier for British rock legends UFO than to rest on their laurels. The band could easily release the occasional best-of album to earn a few additional royalties and be content with looking back at their exceptionally glorious past. And it certainly wouldn’t be a problem for UFO to sell out tours on the strength of their legendary name. But idleness or indeed a musical standstill have always been out of the question for Phil Mogg, Paul Raymond, Andy Parker, and Vinnie Moore. These in equal measures experienced and ambitious musicians are interested in the present, their love of creativity and the active continuation of their celebrated band history. And now we can look forward to Seven Deadly, the band’s latest studio album which combines present and future with UFO‘s greatest fortes. Mogg, Raymond, Parker and Moore are set to release 10 brand-new songs on SPV/Steamhammer February 28th in North America.
The album will be released as a limited edition digipak (incl. 2 bonus tracks), a Double Gatefold LP with printed innersleeves and coloured vinyl, standard edition and download.
What is this bold thesis based on – in view of the countless classics the band has produced throughout its history? Not only on the fact that UFO have that perfect mix of talent, charisma and experience, but also on each individual band member, who currently all seem to be bursting with a zest for action and a wealth of ideas. Seven Deadly is an atmospherically dense fabric consisting of classy guitars, tight rock grooves and vocals which are unique to UFO. So it’s no wonder that sound engineer Tommy Newton, in whose Area 51 studio in Celle, Germany, the new tracks were recorded, commented: “I’ve never heard a better Phil Mogg!”
The UFO frontman’s thoroughly impressive vocal performance goes hand in hand with the awesome compositions on Seven Deadly. The classic rock of ‘Burn Your House Down’ features all the important UFO strengths, ‘Going Down To Mojotown’ sees the musicians sound tougher than ever, and last but not least ‘Wonderland’ features a pointed reference to UFO‘s early days. ‘Angel Station‘ sees the band prove how classic rock music is complemented perfectly with epic elements, while ‘Fight Night’ is an excellent track to be performed in a live context. There’s no need to draw attention to the technical skills of original UFO members Paul Raymond and Andy Parker, their music sounding inspired and faultless at the same time. Having said that, Vinnie Moore’s exceptional guitar style deserves to be explicitly mentioned as well. The American musician not only lends the songs expression and power with his haunting licks and dynamic riffs, but also contributes solos on Seven Deadly which can only be described as absolute world class.
As already mentioned, UFO continue to be a live force to be reckoned with. Their UK tour has been scheduled for March/April 2012 before the band go on to tour the rest of Europe. A little note in passing: at the time of Seven Deadly‘s release, UFO will be performing at the Monsters Of Rock Cruise – The Voyage: there could hardly be a more fitting setting for this exciting new album!

0 Mindflow and UFO Concert Review at McGuffy’s in Dayton, Ohio – 5/17/11

Mindflow and UFO came into town to play live at McGuffy’s House of Rock in Dayton, Ohio last Tuesday night. I didn’t know anything about Mindflow coming into the show, and I had never seen UFO live. Of course, I have plenty of UFO’s music in my collection, but their visits to southern Ohio are few and far between. I have heard Eddie Trunk rave about UFO on his radio show for years, and wasn’t about to pass seeing them play live.
Mindflow is a hard rock band from São Paulo, Brazil. They are heavy, and progressive. Even though I didn’t know their music, I enjoyed their set. I thought their guitarist Rodrigo Hidalgo had a very good guitar tone, and was impressed with their set overall. The band brought their own lights which I thought was somewhat unusual, but pretty cool all at the same time. I enjoyed their music, and will be checking out their latest CD, With Bare Hands soon.
Check our Mindflow Photo Gallery at this link. You can listen to a couple of the band’s songs at their Facebook page.

UFO’s lineup has changed many times over the years. This lineup has Phil Mogg on vocals, Paul Raymond on rhythm guitar and keyboards, Andy Parker on Drums, Vinnie Moore on lead guitar, and Barry Sparks on bass. Phil Mogg’s vocals were really good, and I found him charming and funny with his in between song banter.
Vinnie Moore is no stranger to my ears. I have been listening to his amazing guitar playing since his 1990 CD, Mind’s Eye. Getting to experience his playing live was a real treat. He plays the toughest guitar leads in UFO with relative ease, and is as fluent as the any of the guitarists that have played for UFO. I was extremely impressed with his playing.
The UFO member that practically stole the show was Barry Sparks. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see a bass solo twice in one week. After seeing Billy Sheehan at M3 a few days earlier, I was shocked to find another Sheehan caliber player in Barry Sparks. His bass playing acrobatics were extremely fun to watch, and his fret work was nearly as good as the master, Billy Sheehan. He is a true showman, and is very entertaining. Although I was bummed that Pete Way wasn’t in the band, I quickly became a new fan of Mr. Sparks.
UFO’s set included the songs: “The Wild Willing and the Innocent”, “Mother Mary”, “Saving Me”, “Let it Roll”, “I’m a Loser”, “Helldriver”, “Venus”, “This Kids”, “Ain’t No Baby”, “Only You Can Rock Me”, the surprise number “Try Me”, “Too Hot To Handle”, “Love to Love”, “Doctor Doctor”, and the encore of “Light’s Out” and “Rock Bottom”.
UFO played to a packed house in Dayton. From the people I spoke with prior to the show, there were several folks that traveled from all over Ohio to watch the band play. The crowd sang along with every song, and UFO was definitely feeding off the energy of the audience. I absolutely loved seeing UFO play live, and will now travel to see them play when they come back around my area. I know understand why Eddie Trunk has been raving about UFO. I can’t wait to see them again!
This leg of the U.S. tour ended on May 22nd, but the band is a planning a return to the U.S. next September. Go see them live when they return! You won’t be disappointed!

True rock legends such as UFO are characterized not only by the fact that they have added several classic anthems to the annals of rock history, but that their musical output, after many years, still remains at such a consistently high level and they always have something new and fresh coming up. With classic albums such as “Phenomenon”, “Force it” and “No Heavy Pettin” Phil Mogg, Vinnie Moore, Andy Parker and Paul Raymond still sound vital and imaginative to this day.
UFO’s global breakthrough came when German guitarist, Michael Schenker, joined the fold in 1973, having left his band the Scorpions to accept an offer from Phil Mogg and Pete Way. UFOreleased three consecutive rock classics with Schenker (“Phenomenon” (1974), “Force It” (1975) and “No Heavy Pettin'” (1976)), featuring classics such as: ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘Shoot, Shoot’, and ‘Rock Bottom’. Following the arrival of keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond, UFOreleased the albums “Lights Out” (1977) and “Obsession” (1978), which included the hit singles ‘Too Hot To Handle’, ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Only You Can Rock Me’. Their live release “Strangers In The Night” came out in 1979 and is still considered to be one of the best live releases of all time, unfortunately, this also brought about the end of the Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker & Raymond line-up.
The reorganized band underwent fifteen years marked by various eras and numerous line-up changes. To everyone’s surprise, autumn 1993 saw the return of the former UFO line-up consisting of Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker and Raymond. This new edition of the classic team released the album “Walk On Water”, their first joint effort after in over fifteen years and they embarked on a world tour. However, Schenker left UFO again during the “Walk On Water” tour to continue working with his own group, MSG, while Mogg & Way went on to release their second album, Chocolate Box. The UFO album “Covenant and Sharks”, recorded by Mogg, Way and Schenker, arrived at the stores in 2000 and 2002. Vinnie Moore soon joined the band and recorded songs for the new album “You Are Here”which also featured Jason Bonham taking over the drumming duties. During the subsequent world tour, UFO recorded a show in Germany, which was later released as the live album, “Showtime”, as well as a DVD featuring additional bonus material. In 2006 left UFO to join Foreigner and was replaced by UFO’s original drummer, Andy Parker for their release “The Monkey Puzzle” In 2009 UFO released the critically acclaimed album “The Visitor”.

If you’re expecting cool samba rhythms and sexy Latin sounds just because this band is from Brazil forget it. MINDFLOW is a blistering hardcore band whose music comes at you like a force. For the past six years, the band has systematically set their career on its path through endless touring throughout their home territories in South America, releasing two self-produced powerful albums, developing and utilizing the grass roots street team mentality to promote themselves and their music and now, finally, capturing the attention of the international music industry. Appearances at music festivals in the U.S., Europe and Southeast Asia have started to build the band the same sort of loyal following from music fans all over the world, as they already enjoy in South America.
Heavy metal, hard rock, modern rock…try to put MINDFLOW’s music into a category and you either don’t know where to stop or you can’t find the words. It’s all there – the compelling energy of the rhythm section – drums and bass pounding relentless power. And yet, add Rodrigo’s guitar style which is as much substance as style – melodic yet ear-crushing, and Danilo’s surprisingly sweet vocals where one expects the usual metal screams and screeches and suddenly boundaries disappear and the band becomes more than just another gut-wrenching heavy band. The lyrics and the melodies are as important to the band’s overall style as the volume and the rhythm. They write songs about the world, about life – emotional lyrics that reach a listener’s mind as well as their ears. Genres blend and yet there is no mistaking what this band is all about. Maybe the secret is not to try to figure it out too much but to just to let your whole nervous system get lost in it. And it will.
Based in Brazil, the band knew that breaking through in other parts of the world and becoming a true international success was going to take time and work. Although offers for record deals and management came their way, the band didn’t fall prey to the temptations and fantasies, but chose instead to handle their career themselves until the right deals were given them. The first two albums, 2003’s “Just The Two of Us…Me and Them” and 2006’s “Mind Over Body”, were self-produced and self-promoted, yet, the two albums together sold a very impressive 45,000 without major industry support and backing. The endless work of the band’s fans and street teams has made them one of the biggest selling rock bands in Brazil, popular throughout South America, and is starting to create interest everywhere else in the world that counts.
Their new album produced Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Slipknot, Disturbed, etc.), entitled “With Bare Hands” combines the best of both these newer albums and showcases the band’s progression into a top-notch musical entity. It serves as a testament to the band’s ability to keep themselves relevant while refusing to compromise their musical style and taste. On songs like “Break me Out” which opens the album, the vocals lead the song, but the subtle instrumentation and mix showcase the band’s ability to use substance and style to put a song over while so many other bands have to depend on sheer volume to accomplish the same thing. On “Breakthrough” and the title track, “With Bare Hands” the band’s pop, almost commercial abilities create hook-laden and riff-laden potential radio singles. And yet the band’s hard rocking rhythm section never ceases to be the thread that holds all the songs on the album together no matter how different they each may seem on the surface. “Thrust Into This Game” pays homage to the band’s hardcore influences taking old school metal instrumental and vocal stylings into the modern day. This track showcases the individual band members’ mastery of their respective instruments as the rhythm section pushes it to the brink of exploding while the guitar leads are flashy without being overdone. If there were one word to describe the band’s approach to its songwriting and playing it would have to be “tasteful.” They don’t depend on showy instrumentation because their natural abilities are enough just as they are.

UFO released three consecutive rock classics with Schenker (“Phenomenon” (1974), “Force It” (1975) and “No Heavy Pettin'” (1976)), featuring classics such as: ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘Shoot, Shoot’, and ‘Rock Bottom’. Following the arrival of keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond, UFO released the albums “Lights Out” (1977) and “Obsession” (1978), which included the hit singles ‘Too Hot To Handle’, ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Only You Can Rock Me’.

1 EDDIETRUNK.COM TO PREMIERE EXCLUSIVE VIDEO OF UFO’S ROCKPALAST PERFORMANCE FROM 1980

UFO AND MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP ROCKPALAST DVD AND CD IN STORES OCTOBER 25, 2010
Starting today, EddieTrunk.com will be exclusively premiering a clip from UFO’s classic Rockpalast performance which took place November 29, 1980 at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany. The clip being premiered is a classic rendition of the UFO favorite “Doctor, Doctor”. This performance is finally being released from the Rockpalast archives and will be in stores on October 25th from MIG Music. Make sure to head over to http://www.eddietrunk.com and check out the clip today.
From the first notes of “Lettin’ Go” you can hear an experienced band celebrating a compact, homogenic, and straight forward performance. During this show they tore through their hits including: “Lights Out”, “Too Hot to Handle”, “Only You Can Rock Me”, “Cherry” as well as a magnificent cover of Elvis Presely’s “Mystery Train”. Ending the night with a breathtaking encore which included “Rock Bottom” and “Doctor Doctor”, this concert remains a stunning document of the power and perfection of one of the greatest hard rock bands that have ever existed
There are more stories about UFO than actual songs that they have composed. Any band who has been in the music business for 40 plus years are bound to have experienced difficult times, but also dazzling success. UFO’s story began in London way back in 1969, when vocalist Phil Mogg, drummer Andy Parker, guitarist Mick Bolton and bassist Pete Way formed the group, borrowing the band name from a legendary London music club. The band distinguished themselves with their very own, unmistakable style, touching a nerve among their growing following with rock numbers like ‘Prince Kajuku’, ‘Follow You Home’ or ‘C’mon Everybody’ from their albums “UFO 1”, “Flying” and “UFO Live”.
UFO’s global breakthrough came when German guitarist, Michael Schenker, joined the fold in 1973, having left his band the Scorpions to accept an offer from Phil Mogg and Pete Way. Their live release “Strangers In The Night” came out in 1979 and is still considered to be one of the best live releases of all time, unfortunately, this also brought about the end of the Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker & Raymond line-up.
Eddie Trunk continues his crusade to keep radio fresh and exciting and play the music he loves. He is currently heard on two national radio shows and seen on VH1 Classic and MSG Networks. He has also appeared on MTV several times and on Fox News Channel, worked as a freelance music journalist, boxing ring announcer, and MC for various concerts and rock events around the USA. He is the host of America’s biggest rock festival Rocklahoma in Pryor OK every July, hosts the events press conference in LA, and also consults on the lineup.
