0 Pretty Maids – Motherland (2013)

  • · CD Reviews Q-Z · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Video

PRETTY MAIDS Moth COVERSynth heavy, hard hitting, and filled with lyrics that give the listener pause, creating thought, Pretty Maids latest album, Motherland is a solid, enjoyable effort from this Danish rock band. While their last effort, 2010’s Pandemonium was a harder edgier affair, Motherland is a strong musical journey and a great next chapter for this band’s long history book.

On first listen, it may appear that Pretty Maids are leaning more toward the album oriented rock melody in their song crafting. Yet, after a few more spins, it is easier to tell that this disc is still based on a solid foundation of shredding guitars, strong and steady stomp drumbeats, and massive guitar solos. Overall Motherland is a little mellower than its predecessor, but it still delivers the hard rock hits.

Motherland is one of those atypical albums where the disc must be played through a few times for the whole effect to take hold. On first listen, I thought that Motherland was a decent record with the stronger songs placed at the end of the album. Then I played it through a few more times only to learn that the songs at the beginning of the record were pretty decent as well.

Loaded with great hooks and shredding solos, Pretty Maids have delivered a fine piece with Motherland. Lead singer Ronnie Atkins’ voice is in top form throughout the record, never wavering or weakening. Ken Hammer continues to deliver on guitar with some exceptional work and fantastic solos. And while the keyboards from Morten Sandager receive plenty of spotlights, they never overtake the music entirely, allowing for a perfect blend of synthesizer, guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. It creates a synthesis of symphonic sound parading through the eardrums with delight.

Motherland reminds me of great synth-rock albums from the 80s, balanced with mid-tempo melodies, hard rockers, and a ballad or two thrown in for good measure. Think Styx, Trixter, Europe, or Winger for a good point of reference. And while Motherland may not be as strong a release as their last record, it is still a decent album worthy of investing your listening time into. Pretty Maids may be heading in a mellower direction, but that doesn’t make them any less grand. And given enough time (and plays) Motherland may overtake any of the bands releases in the last ten years as the record to listen to.

0 Pop Evil – Onyx (2013)

  • June 5, 2013
  • by ryovie
  • · CD Reviews I-P · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Video

Pop Evil OnyxAdjectives that can be used to describe Onyx: heavy, different, solid, fantastic, amazing. After a few spins it is easy to state that Onyx is the best Pop Evil album to date. And while that may seem like a bold statement, it is a true statement. Fans expecting to hear “Monster You Made,” or “100 In A 55,” will not find that here. That doesn’t mean those fans will be disappointed, because Pop Evil has still delivered greatness. Acoustic guitars may be absent, and ballads may be few and far between (technically only one ballad appears on Onyx), but phenomenal music is definitely present and accounted for. Here now is Hard Rock Hideout’s track by track breakdown of the latest LP from Pop Evil.

Goodbye My Friend
Opening track, “Goodbye My Friend,” is a solid, hard rocking, modern blast. The addition of Nick Fueling (lead guitar) and Chaci Riot (drums) are felt immediately. And while the absence of Tony Greve and Dylan Allison is noticeable, the new players are taking Pop Evil in a whole different direction. “Goodbye My Friend” sets the tone for what the rest of Onyx is going to sound like: a fast, hard hitting masterpiece. The solos in this song are outstanding and vocalist Leigh Kakaty reaches down and pushes out a growling, gravelly voice that has not been heard previously.

Deal With The Devil
“Deal With The Devil” is a fast song with a hard and heavy beat. This song hit hard right out of the gate and quickly became an instant favorite. I didn’t think that there was a song that I would enjoy more than “Trenches” on this record, but I was wrong. There are multiple songs that are better than “Trenches” and “Deal With The Devil” is one of them. Crunching guitars from Nick Fueling and Dave Grahs dominate this song and turn it into a gem. Add to that Kakaty’s voice in peak form, and there’s high chance for “Deal With The Devil” to become a huge hit.

Trenches
“Trenches” was the first single released for Onyx and for a while I really thought it was the best song on the record. That is no longer the case (as you will see). Yet, “Trenches” is one of the best Pop Evil songs to date. Crunching, heavy guitars open the track and are immediately followed by the pounding drums of Riot. The powerful vocals that Kakaty nails throughout along with the urgency that the song is sung in makes this one of the most powerful anthems to come out of the Pop Evil camp.

Torn To Pieces
This is easily the weakest song on the album. That’s not to say it’s a horrendous song, it’s just not as strong as the other tracks. The subject matter is very touching (Leigh Kakaty wrote it as a tribute after his father passed away), and the song is heartfelt, but “Torn To Pieces” lacks the power that all other Pop Evil ballads have contained. And considering this is the only true ballad on Onyx, it was quite surprising. Heading into the disc, I thought “Torn To Pieces” was going to be a song that I constantly played. However, it looks like it will be just the opposite. I seem to hit skip a lot to get to the next track.

Divide
“Divide” is another strong, hard hitting, modern rock gem that only Pop Evil can deliver. This is also another song that defines the new direction Pop Evil is heading in. There would never be a song like “Divide” on the band’s previous two albums because they hadn’t emerged to that state in their career yet. With “Divide” the band has embraced the modern rock sound that they seemed to be keeping at bay on previous records. Here, they embrace the sound and turned in a strong, enjoyable song.

Beautiful
“Beautiful” is a mid-tempo piece that is quite enjoyable. The subject matter is exceptional, as the message in the music is we are all beautiful to someone in our own way. Regardless of sexual orientation, the color of our skin, personal interests, or anything else, we are all beautiful today and everyday for the rest of our lives. “Beautiful” is a very uplifting song and one that I believe has the potential to be absolutely astonishing in concert. Personally, I can’t wait to hear this song performed live.

Silence & Scars
Another ballad is delivered in the form of “Silence & Scars.” The song emerges with a strange, yet cool, attention grabbing guitar riff. It sets the stage for the rest of the song. Once again, Kakaty’s voice is strong and smooth and while it’s not a true ballad, “Silence & Scars” is up there with “Monster You Made” for one of the best ballads in the Pop Evil catalog. I expect that this will be a chart topping hit in the very near future.

Sick Sense
This is the heaviest song that Pop Evil has ever done. It sounds like a mash up of Marilyn Manson, Rage Against The Machine, and some darker modern rock bands. After the first couple of listens, I didn’t think that I was going to like this song at all. Then, after a few more spins, it started to grow on me. Now, “Sick Sense” is one of my favorite tracks on the record. It clearly shows the evolution of Pop Evil and the deep influence that Fueling and Riot had on the band for the recording of this record. Three years ago, I wouldn’t even consider “Sick Sense” a Pop Evil song. Now, part of me is hoping this is the direction the band heads in over the next couple of albums.

Fly Away
“Fly Away” is a return to the Pop Evil sound that fans have come to know over the years. Hard rocking, clean, and a whole lot of fun, “Fly Away” is one of the strongest Pop Evil songs recorded. This is destined to be a sing along classic in almost no time. “Fly Away” is another song that I am anxious to see the band perform in concert. There is so much raw power and potential for this song to be a climactic moment during their concert. And while the song structure is very simple, the delivery is impeccable, and it is what pushes “Fly Away” over the top.

Behind Closed Doors
This is another song that took a few listens to grow on me. At first, I wasn’t quite sure that I liked this song, but after a few plays, I realized how grand of a song “Behind Closed Doors” is. Starting off slow and then building into a hurried frenzy, “Behind Closed Doors” is a song that has a lot to offer. The song is rich, layered, and deep, which may be why it took so long to grow on me. There is a lot happening within “Behind Closed Doors” and it takes several listens to truly appreciate all of the great music that is being played back at the listener.

Welcome To Reality
Another quick, simple, and highly enjoyable song, “Welcome To Reality” is standard Pop Evil flair. Filled with high energy and strong vocals from Kakaty, “Welcome To Reality” is a song that delivers. If “Trenches” has a sibling, it would be “welcome To Reality.” This is a strong song that serves as a great reminder that music can sometimes just be straight out fun.

Flawed
“Flawed” is an odd song that I haven’t quite decided how I feel about. I love the opening guitar riff from Nick Fueling and I love how the drums come crashing in behind the riff. Yet, there is something about the song that keeps it from standing out as all of the other tracks have. I am unable to identify exactly what is holding this song back, but the simple fact remains that “Flawed” isn’t as grand as 10 of the other Onyx tracks. Maybe it’s due to the fact that it is the last song on the record? I have no idea. What I do know is that it will take several more listens to determine if “Flawed” is one of the better Pop Evil catalog songs.

Black Lodge 2013

American Industrial group BLACK LODGE have just unveiled a music video for their song “Never Clean”, which can be seen below. The video was shot on location in Big Bear, CA, and was directed by Tanya Dahl of The Realm Creative. Artist Wayne Robinson (Marvel Comics: Wolverine, Captain America) illustrated the graphic novel for The Diary of Tomahawk.

“Never Clean” is featured on the band’s forthcoming debut album The Diary of Tomahawk, which is due out later this year. The album is a 13 song concept album, which tells the story of a young girl named Tomahawk, who after enduring a horrifying experience within her family, begins practicing Dark Magick, and discovers a world of shadows interlaced within her own reality. BLACK LODGE is offering the release of “Never Clean” as a free download, available on their official site, along with the first chapter of the accompanying graphic novel.

The Diary of Tomahawk was recorded at The Realm Creative with co-producer Jeordie White/Twiggy Ramirez (Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle) and producer Lee Miles (Rise Against & Puddle of Mudd). Brian Virtue (30 Seconds to Mars & Chevelle) mixed the album with Paul Logus (Stone Sour) mastering.

BLACK LODGE lead guitarist Johnny Royal remarks, “Jeordie’s musicianship is extraordinary. He has become a mentor and a great friend to the band.  Lee Miles brings a powerful dynamic to our recording sessions and when combined with Jeordie’s ethereal approach to songwriting, an explosive dark soundscape is materialized throughout The Diary of Tomahawk.”

BLACK LODGE is Gavin Reign (lead vocals), Johnny Royal (lead guitar/synthesist), Ventura XIII (bass), Law Veritas (rhythm guitar) and Justin Greene (drummer).

0 MICHAEL MONROE: Iconic Rock ‘N’ Roll Frontman Releases New Studio Album, ‘Horns and Halos’, on August 27th 2013 via Spinefarm Records

  • April 20, 2013
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music · Video

MichaelMonroeBalladoftheLowerEastSide

In 2010, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and uber-energetic front-man and all-round rock ‘n’ roll legend MICHAEL MONROE unveiled his new side project in grand style via an exclusive press conference. Flash forward six months to a full UK tour with Motörhead, and another few months to the release of Another Night in the Sun, a globally-anticipated live album that teased fans clamoring for a final, polished taste of the new project. Finally, roughly a year after MICHAEL MONROE’s original public reveal, the band released their first critically-acclaimed full-length release, Sensory Overdrive, produced by Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, John Lennon). The album went on to win Classic Rock Magazine’s ‘Album Of The Year’ award and landed at #1 on the charts in MM’s Finnish homeland.

In 2012, after touring throughout the UK in support of Sensory Overdrive, Monroe announced that he would go back into seclusion to prepare for the band’s next offering. Monroe’s touring and recording outfit, comprised of bassist Sami Yaffa (ex-Hanoi Rocks/New York Dolls), guitarist Steve Conte (ex-New York Dolls/Company Of Wolves), guitarist Dregen (Backyard Babies, formerly of Hellacopters fame) and drummer Karl ‘Rockfist’ Rosqvist (ex-Chelsea Smiles/Danzig), worked tirelessly in the studio, providing creative support for a frontman whose reputation is genuinely global and whose influence continues to be felt, with musicians of all ages (from Dave Grohl to the original Gun n’ Roses members) citing Michael’s ground-breaking career as a source of inspiration.

Now after several months, the wait is over.  MICHAEL MONROE can finally reveal that the band’s upcoming studio album, Horns and Halos, will hit stores everywhere on August 27, 2013 via Spinefarm Records. The band offers a taste of the new album in the form of a new single and video for the track ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’, which can be watched now below.

The track includes a nod to Michael’s early days in New York, a city he moved to for a decade following the mid-’80s break up of glam punk pioneers, Hanoi Rocks. The clip – directed by celebrated videographer/photographer Ville Juurikkala, who has photographed Michael for the past 10 years as well as working with Linkin Park, Good Charlotte and HIM, amongst others – features archive footage and photos of Michael in prime Big Apple mode, interlaced with current live and backstage scenes.

“The song ‘Ballad Of The Lower East Side’ is about New York and especially The Lower East Side – what it was way back in the days when I lived  there, how times have changed and how it is nowadays.,” states MICHAEL MONROE. “New York has always been an important city to me since I lived there for 10 years. Two members of our band still live there.  It’s the City of all Cities.”

0 New Video – Vicious Rumors – I Am The Gun

ViciousRumors2010

When Vicious Rumors returned from a long, strenuous and immensely successful world tour in autumn 2011, the musicians – least of all band mastermind and main songwriter Geoff Thorpe – couldn’t really see themselves mustering the energy to release a new studio album in the foreseeable future. “2011 was a monster year for Vicious Rumors in the most positive sense of the word,” he says, looking back at that time with surprise and some satisfaction. “We were on the road non-stop for more or less eight months, played countless club shows and performed at some of the most important festivals worldwide. The last show of the tour took place as part of the 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise – what a finale! Then everything was over very suddenly and we started to work on our new album without so much as a break. Perhaps you can imagine how difficult that was and how much concentration we needed to do that kind of work without any loss of friction.” Now the doubtlessly successful result of that big challenge is scheduled for release: Vicious Rumors are set to unleash Electric Punishment sounding more multi-faceted and creative than they have done in a long time.

Vicious Rumors has released a new video today “I Am The Gun” in support of Electric Punishment.  Check it out below!

There definitely is no discernible loss of friction on Electric Punishment, which is again ruled by what Thorpe refers to as an “impressive double bass thunder, double guitar attacks and haunting vocals the way you only get them with this band”. At the same time, the ten new songs are clearly more multi-layered and diverse than the material on its 2011 predecessor Razorback Killers. “While Razorback Killers was heavy all the way through from start to finish, the new material is more in the vein of Word Of Mouth,” Thorpe explains. At the same time, the uncompromising toughness that their fans have come to expect of Vicious Rumors is present on Electric Punishment as well: the two openers ‘I Am The Gun’ and ‘Black X List’ are typical as can be of Vicious Rumors. Thorpe refers to those numbers as “classic power metal tracks which would have fitted on every one of our albums. But there’s also an unusually atmospheric song called ‘Eternally’, an anthem to our audience entitled ‘Together We Unite’ and a deeply black ballad named ‘Escape (From Hell)’. I’m sure that our fans will be just as surprised of the whole album as they will be of the final Kiss cover ‘Strange Ways’.”

Surprised and most likely thrilled, because once again the band has brought all its skills to bear and come up with a real highlight. Thorpe, vocalist Brian Allen, bassist Stephen Goodwin and drummer Larry Howe were supported by guitarist Thean Rasmussen, who returned to the Vicious Rumors fold after Razorback Killers. In addition, Thorpe & Co. invited a number of former allies to the studio as guest musicians: Brad Gillis features on ‘D-Block’, ‘Together We Unite’ and ‘Eternally’, Marc McGhee on ‘Escape (From Hell)’, and last but not least tour guitarist Bob Capka helped out at the studio with a number of rhythm guitars and a haunting solo on ‘D-Block’. Thorpe: “I had a few problems with my fingers, that’s why I was glad that Bob was there to help. Otherwise it probably wouldn’t have been possible to stick to our tight production schedule.”

So it’s done: Electric Punishment is Vicious Rumors’ eleventh studio album and proves just how much of a force to be reckoned with this band continues to be. “We have permanently grown, there have been no two identical albums in our career because each album has a new, fresh approach,” comments Thorpe, not without pride. “Still we’ve never strayed from our course – perhaps precisely for this reason. We’ve remained faithful to our ideals and have always been honest with our fans. I think our loyal followers value that Vicious Rumors have never jumped on any kind of bandwagon. Everything we do comes from the heart, and Electric Punishment documents that no other band on this planet sounds like Vicious Rumors. To us, that’s an incentive, a challenge and a quality feature all in one. And it’s something our fans can rely on when we set off on our next monster tour in spring 2013.” Vicious Rumors have been scheduled to headline countless clubs and play important festivals (the Headbangers Open Air  in Germany and the Alcatraz festival in Belgium having been confirmed already) before going on to Japan and the USA. Thorpe: “We’re facing big challenges again – but that sort of thing has always helped Vicious Rumors to grow!”

Havok8

Denver thrashers HAVOK have premiered their latest video for the song “From The Cradle To The Grave” from their 2012 EP, The Point Of No Return, via the band’s official Facebook page. The video, directed by Roy Warner, was filmed on location in Detroit during the band’s final tour of 2012 alongside Skeletonwitch. The premiere coincides with the band’s continued work on their anticipated Terry Date produced third full-length album.  Check out the video below!

Discussing the song’s lyrical inspiration, vocalist/guitarist Dave Sanchez says, “‘From The Cradle To The Grave’ is about America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes. In the late 1800s, in Chicago, Holmes built a hotel specifically with murder in mind. It included doors that opened up to brick walls, staircases that lead to nowhere, and one-way rooms that once you entered, you never came out. He was a religious man and firmly believed that since he was born, the Devil was at his side. That being said, bang your head.”

HAVOK will hit the road next week, teaming with Goatwhore and The Casualties. The dates will feature new bassist Michael Joseph Leon. Sanchez notes, “as many people have already heard, we recently parted ways with bassist Jesse De Los Santos. It was a mutual split and we wish Jesse all the best. I’d like to thank Jesse for the four years of killing it in studio and on stage. With that being said, we’d like to introduce our new four-string monster, Mike Leon. Mike is a fantastic bassist and a veteran of the road from his years of touring with The Absence. We are very happy to have him on board.”

Leon comments, “I’m completely honored to be a part of such a well-oiled machine and to have the opportunity to play with these dudes is a dream come true! Not only is HAVOK one of my favorite new heavy metal bands out in the scene, but the guys in the band are a few of the best dudes I know! You can definitely look forward to us kickin’ lots of ass together this year, and for many years to come.”

HAVOK expect to complete all work on their new record in the coming weeks. Album information and special pre-order details will be announced shortly.

1 Saxon – Sacrifice (2013)

Saxon Sacrifice Saxon is just about to release their 20th studio album (gasp!), Sacrifice on the world on Tuesday. How does their latest effort Sacrifice stand up? In my opinion, Sacrifice is better than the last couple of releases, Call to Arms and Into the Labyrinth.  It is heavier, grittier and delivers a lot more punch than the previous two albums.  Byford’s vocals are still in fine form. Even at the ripe young age of 62, Byford is still delivering some of the best vocals in heavy metal. I can’t say enough about the guitar work of Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt either.  There are plenty of solos and heavy riffs to feast your ears on.

After the brief instrumental opener “Procession”, Sacrifice really doesn’t let up at all.  If the title track “Sacrifice” doesn’t get your blood pumping, your stereo might be broken.  The pounding rhythms don’t end with “Sacrifice”. In fact, there isn’t a slow moment on the album.

If NASCAR was smart, they would use “Warriors of the Road” as a theme song.  Byford lets his fondness of auto racing flow into this song with the sound effects from the  high speed whine of some open wheel race cars. Much like those race cars, the throttle is wide open on “Warriors of the Road”. This high octane rocker is going to be staple in Saxon’s live set without a doubt.

Another favorite song on Sacrifice is “Stand Up And Fight”.  This is a great metal anthem, with a simple, yet powerful message.

If Sacrifice falls short anywhere, it is the overall length of the album, which is a little on the short side.  I will take 40 minutes of quality heavy metal over sixty minutes of crap rock any day of the week though, so this isn’t a problem for me.  Sacrifice might not stand up to the classic albums, Denim & Leather, or Wheels of Steel, but it is definitely one of the better Saxon albums in the last 10 years or so. It is solid all the way through, and worth your hard earned dollars.

Fans of classic metal and Saxon fans are going to love this!   Recommended!

Art of Shock There's No Tomorrow

Every year, it has been tradition for Vans Warped Tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman to personally handpick an up-and-coming, 100% independent act to be the official BBQ Band for the tour. The BBQ Band is given a slot on the Ernie Ball stage each year in trade for serving up the delicious food consumed at each post-show BBQ. Many bands have made their start as a Vans Warped Tour BBQ Band, including Dropkick Murphys, Longway and others.

This year, Hollywood, CA’s own ART OF SHOCK has been chosen for the prestigious honor. Vans Warped Tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman states, “I’m glad to have ART OF SHOCK out on the grill and on stage this year!”

The Sunset Strip favorites, known for their unique fusion of modern and classic rock influences, have been taking Los Angeles and Southern California by storm for the past few years with their over-the-top performances.
