British rockers Voodoo Six are excited to announce their Summer 2012 tour schedule which will include a set on Download Festival’s Red Bull Bedroom Stage and support shows across the UK with ex-Dream Theater legend Mike Portnoy’s heavy metal super group Adrenaline Mob.

The dates come following the release of the band’s limited edition EP ‘Falling Knives’ and single of the same name earlier this year, which garnered critical acclaim across the European rock and metal press.

The band have been locked away for the past few months in Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris’ studio writing and recording the material for their new album.  Lead singer Luke Purdie comments: “This new material really takes Voodoo Six to a new level and we’ll have more news on that front soon – but for now we’re just so excited to be getting back out on the road again and can’t wait to share a stage with Adrenaline Mob and an incredible Download lineup!”

Voodoo Six are set to release the Falling Knives EP in digital format on November 28th. The EP, which will be a special limited edition release, will be available to fans until the end of February. The band preceded the release by kicking off their 14-date UK tour in Leicester on November 17th. The tour will finish with a set at this year’s sold-out Hard Rock Hell V Festival in Prestatyn.

The Falling Knives EP comes following the success of last year’s album Fluke?, which was mixed by uber studio engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, AEROSMITH, METALLICA), and boasted the talent of brand new vocalist and front man Luke Purdie. After an extensive UK tour including supports with legendary British hard rock stalwarts UFO, Voodoo Six sprang into 2011 with another set of dates supporting flamboyant ex-HANOI ROCKS star Michael Monroe.

The new EP will feature three brand new tracks, the eponymous “Falling Knives”, “Sharp Sand’ and “Stop”, as well as three re-worked and re-recorded versions of tracks from the band’s debut album First Hit For Free, featuring the vocals of new Voodoo Six singer Luke Purdie.

Check out the band’s new “Falling Knives” video below!

0 “Fluke?” From Voodoo Six to Be Released October 18th

  • October 10, 2010
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

It was probably a good thing for Tony Newton, that rather than inheriting his dad’s banjo skills, he instead got his hands on a bass guitar after one of his father’s betting shop clients offered Newton Senior the instrument when he couldn’t afford to settle his bill in cash. The resolution of the wager set young Tony on the path that would eventually lead him to find Rock N Roll redemption as the bassist and head honcho of one of the UK’s most exciting hard rock bands – Voodoo Six.

The band’s first album – ”First Hit For Free” – was released on Universal Music in Japan in 2007 and in the UK/Europe on White Knuckle/Locomotive Records in March 2008 with a new song ‘Faith’ added and a brand new re-mix by uber studio engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc).

Following the album’s release, the band toured extensively in the UK in support of their first album, gaining new friends and fans everywhere they played. Summer slots at the Download Festival and Bloodstock Festival followed these dates. Then a full 6-week headline tour of the UK in September 2009 ensued before the band travelled on to Europe where they were the opening act for re-formed Boston rockers Extreme in October/November 2008.

2009 saw the band playing at the HammerFest Festival in March and followed soon after by a sold out performance at the Scala in London for their homecoming end of tour gig after a hectic twelve months of almost non-stop touring. In April 2009 vocalist Luke Purdie replaced Henry Rundell. Hailing from a blues/rock background, Luke had been playing guitar and singing since he was 10 years old and toured the world in his parents’ band when he was 15.

His distinct vocals and remarkable voice fit perfectly with the Voodoo Six sound bringing rockier and raunchier vocals to the lyrics. Very soon the new line-up were writing and recording a follow up second album.

“Fluke?” was written and recorded over the summer of 2009 and mixed once again by Mike Fraser taking time out between sessions with AC/DC.

All the tracks were produced and engineered by Tony Newton. A digital EP was released in March 2010 – ‘A Little Something For You’. To tie in with this Voodoo Six played their first live shows with the new line up, in London and Southampton – both sold out. On the strength of this – and with the support of Planet Rock radio – Voodoo Six were then asked to be special guests on The Union (Luke Morley) UK tour and UFO on their UK & European tour in March/April.

Voodoo Six’s new album “Fluke?” will be released October 18th.

The cover art & track listing are below.

VoodooSix2008

Voodoo Six has posted the following update on their blog:

Mike Fraser has started mixing the second half of the album, only 4 more songs and the album is finished!! It is sounding amazing, we can’t wait to get out and start playing the new songs live. We are looking into booking some shows now, so all very exciting. Also a new website is being put together and will be up and running in a matter of weeks.
I liked Voodoo Six’s last album quite a bit, and I am hopeful that new one lives up to the last.

The band replaced their long time singer, Henry Rundell with Luke Purdie from Reculver earlier this year.I wanted to see what I could find out about Like Purdie, and found the clip, “Runaway” below. Check it out!

VoodooSix2008Voodoo Six posted the following on their blog this morning:
We know there has been a lot of speculation as to what the major announcement is, well the wait is over:
There has been a re shuffle of the Voodoo Six pack, the band has parted ways with Henry. This may be of disappointment to many fans but in order for Voodoo Six to move forward change was necessary. We all wish Henry the very best for the future, he is a talented guy and sure he will find the music which will inspire him to carry on with a new project. We also thank him for his past contribution to the band.Voodoo Six now has a new member, Luke Purdie. Luke has a rich bluesy voice and is a great songwriter too, he slotted into the band perfectly. Former bands include Reculver and his own solo acoustic project. We are working on getting the new album finished, it’s sounding amazing. We have been rehearsing the new songs and you will be pleased to hear that V6 is firing on all cylinders!
Our schedule is to finish recording and Mike Fraser will mix the album at the end of August. We know this is later than everyone expected but with Luke some songs needed to be re-arranged and we want to make sure this album is something very special. Sorry to keep you all waiting but we can assure you it will be worth the wait.
In the meantime we may drop in the odd one off show so keep checking the website if you want to hear the new songs live prior to release. Thanks for keeping the faith, we all appreciate your support greatly. We hope to see you all very soon.

1 Dirty Deeds vs. Velvet Revolver

  • September 2, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

A couple of weeks ago, Rolling Stone put out the following article:

We don’t know who the next singer of Velvet Revolver will be, but he or she may want to avoid putting the Contraband song “Dirty Little Thing” on future set lists. The band has reportedly settled a plagiarism case with U.K. rocker Tony Newton, bassist of the band Voodoo Six, that alleged VR stole the riff and melody of “Dirty Little Thing” from Newton’s own “Cyber Babe,” which he wrote for his previous band Dirty Deeds.

“A couple of years back, a mate of mine in L.A. called me to say he’d heard what he thought was my song on the radio, and that he had been a bit shocked when he realized it was Velvet Revolver,” says Newton. “When I checked it out myself, I genuinely couldn’t believe it, because it wasn’t as if it was close… it was basically the same riff. Anyway, I called my publishers to check whether they knew anything — which, of course, they didn’t — and then basically left it with them. I never really expected to hear any more about it and was as surprised as anyone when I heard that Universal had settled with Velvet Revolver.”

And what a settlement it was: Newton will receive 20 percent of all royalties from Contraband and the single dating back to 2004, plus all future royalties on the song from commercial uses, live performances, digital sales, etc. He’s essentially being paid like he’s a member of the band, even though he never picked up an instrument for them.

Here is Velvet Revolver’s Dirty Little Thing released in 2004.

Here is a Dirty Deed’s Cyber Babe on their 1999 CD, Real World.

Hear the similarities?!  This makes me wonder how many bands out there could file the same lawsuit.

4 Voodoo Six – First Hit For Free (Release Year – 2008)

  • May 21, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · CD Reviews Q-Z · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Video

First Hit For Free is the second debut of sorts for Voodoo Six.

In 2006, the band put out their debut CD, Feed My Soul. Their label didn’t promote the record, and rolling into 2007, the band was still virtually unknown.

Voodoo Six brought in new management, and Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, Van Halen) who remixed the album. Voodoo Six didn’t stop there. They also added the killer new tune, Faith, to their album,  First Hit For Free.

So how is the new disc? If you missed their debut, Feed My Soul, then First Hit For Free is an excellent new way to check out Voodoo Six. Voodoo Six has a cool classic rock sound that is listening to Led Zeppelin with a blend of Soundgarden.

Henry Rundell has a solid rock voice that could push Voodoo Six to the next level. This album is chock full of great vocals, killer guitar work (yes, their are solos,) and a solid rhythm section. Voodoo Six will join the likes of bands like Airbourne, Z02, and The Answer, that will bring real rock back to the mainstream. The only negative thing with First Hit For Free, is that some of songs don’t stand out very well, and can be a little repetitive. Aside from that, First Hit For Free is pretty good record. Hard rock fans have a brand new classic rock record to check out.

My favorite cuts are Faith, Feed My Soul, Crawl and I Am the Sun.

You can download this album via ITunes or buy a copy from Voodoo Six today. Don’t miss this disc!

VSixFMS When Steve Harris from Iron Maiden recommends a band, I tend to take notice. He has talked favorably about Voodoo Six, and has called their debut, the best he has heard in years.

That was enough to have me search out a copy of the band’s 2006 debut, Feed My Soul. After spinning this disc for the first time, all I can say is, Thank You, Mr. Harris! Voodoo Six delivers the goods!

Singer Henry Rundell has one of those one of a kind 80’s style metal voices, that is quite cool to hear for the first time. His sound falls somewhere between a Jeff Keith from Tesla, and a little bit of Robert Plant.

The band itself leaves me speechless. Voodoo Six has a sound that is a very good blend of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s hard rock. They may not have a completely unique sound, but it is different enough to excite this hard rock fan. In their tunes, I hear elements of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and quite a few others. While their sound may borrow a little from these bands, they don’t sound exactly like any of them, and that is completely cool.

If you want to hear a CD, where guitar solos are not a lost art form, where the bass playing is not a bunch of distortion, where the drum beats will ignite your inner head banger, THIS is the CD to get. Voodoo Six is still very much an unknown band in the U.S. as Feed My Soul has not had a proper release here.

With a disc this good, rock fans that haven’t heard this are truly missing out! This is killer stuff! Voodoo Six will be releasing then 2nd disc in 2008. I highly recommend that you check this band out. Chances are you may find yourself buying two V6 discs this year. Feed My Soul is a very good debut, and is one I will be spinning a lot in 2008.
