It is Christmas Eve day, and I prefer to think of some place warm, on this day before Christmas. I can’t think of a better warm place than Australia, and judging from the EP’s I have listened to by Sydney’s Hell City Glamours, they are about to heat up the music scene in a big way.
This band has had a big year in 2007, supporting acts like Alice Cooper, Rose Tattoo and Paul Stanley.
Unlike a few of the other acts coming out of Australia, Hell City Glamours is no AC/DC clone, but I can certainly hear a little bit of that band’s influence on the tunes here.
The Hey Man EP is a cross of hard rocking tunes with a punk rock vibe. It is a sound that works, and does not feel a carbon copy of other bands that I have listened to.
The song Hey Man is instantly catchy, and will have you singing along on the very first listen. It is the simplicity of the lyrics that works for this song.
Another Cigarette has all of the swagger of a Guns ‘N Roses tune while maintaining a punk edge. This is cool stuff!
No Love has a bluesy edge, and is the hardest tune on this disc. I enjoyed the guitars on this song, although it isn’t my favorite tune on Hey Man.
Pretty Far From Perfect is a great tune flavored with acoustic guitars. It is an upbeat rock song that has a Violent Femmes type of style about it. I Love it!
Based on what I can hear on this disc, Hell City Glamours are going to be the next band to break out of Australia, and make it big. Hey Man has some cool tunes, and I am looking forward to the band’s first full length disc, to be released in 2008.
