Autograph – Sign In Please (1984)

Autograph Quite possibly one of the biggest hard rock anthems of the 1980’s came from Autograph’s Sign In Please. The tune Turn Up The Radio, was a top 30 hit, and helped push the album Sign in Please to Platinum level status.

It has been a while since I revisited this disc, but I always had fond memories of Autograph, so I decided to dust this one off and give it a few more spins.

Listening to this disc in 2008, I have the tendency to want toCMR rip on this disc. The material here definitely sounds dated, and the song writing is pure cheese. With that being said, I still enjoy this record somewhat, maybe not as much as I did 24 years ago, but it is still listenable.

The cuts Send Her To Me, Turn Up The Radio, Nine Teen & Non Stop, and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend Isn’t Me are certainly catchy. This disc does have a few filler tracks, but nothing is absolutely terrible.

Sign in Please is quite a bit more pop than it is metal, but is still worth giving a spin every once in a while.

If you haven’t tired of the song Turn Up The Radio, it is almost worth the price of admission, when you pick up Sign in Please.

This one is still in print and worth owning for a good rock album. As mentioned by Metal Mark though, their 3rd one (Loud & Clear) blows this away! Hell, I still listen to their 2nd one (That’s The Stuff) from time to time.

“Turn Up The Radio”, I remember that being considered a jammin tune when I was in 5th grade. But who’d actually bother listening to the entire album?????!!!

This stuff brings back HUGE memories. It’s just feel good, melodic rock and I’m always gonna come back to it and enjoy it. “That’s The Stuff” and “Loud And Clear” followed and produced some fun stuff as well. I wish they’d get back together for a reunion – I’d go see it.

I always thought this was an okay album, but it was helped out a lot commercially by “Turn Up the Radio” having that anthem quality. I think “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend Isn’t Me” is a clever song title. Mark, that’s a good point about them being caught between pop and metal.

I think it’s easy to see why these guys were just a one hit wonder. There was some skills to their playing here and there, but the writing was kind of blah. I think they were hurt by not being either metal enough or pop enough as they stayed in between and they were left being kind of lukewarm at both. I remember their third album being their best, but it’s been twenty years since I heard that.
