Kudos goes out to Point One from Seattle, Washington. Somehow this band has managed to create a sound that is a blend of 80’s, 90’s and 00’s metal.
I didn’t think something like that was possible in this day and age, but Unlucky Stars, sounds so unlike anything I have listened to lately, it is a total breath of fresh air.
With Point One you get some guitar work reminiscent of 80’s metal, the pure vocal style of today’s rock, bits of grunge, a dabble of hardcore (but not too much), and small hints of industrial. The marriage of all of these different sounds some how works for Point One, and better yet, works for this listener’s ears.
There are several songs on Unlucky Stars that are radio ready, and a few that have hit potential. Sadly, with Point One being an indie artist, I doubt that there are enough radio stations out there that have the balls to play this disc. If you are a hard rock fan, with an open mind, you ought to give Unlucky Stars a listen. I think you will find some tunes you can enjoy on this disc.
Point One has six of the tunes from Unlucky Stars available for listening on their myspace page. You can also view the video for Monochrome Mistress below! Go check them out!

No hard rock band has written about Love more than the band, Whitesnake. Just check the song titles for yourselves. The band has 19 songs with Love in the title, and that doesn’t count Fool For Your Lovin’ which makes 20. I thought some Whitesnake would be appropriate on Valentine’s Day!
The video below is a classic. It features John Sykes on guitar performing Love Ain’t No Stranger in Rio in 1985. Enjoy!

Saturday Afternoon, my wife and I check out the latest movie produced by Lost’s J.J. Abrams.
Quite honestly, I wasn’t too sure what to expect from Cloverfield. The movie trailer quickly establishes that something has knocked the head off of the Statue of Liberty. When I saw this, something Godzillalike came to mind. Either that or King Kong, is running around like a madcap monkey in Manhattan once more. The trailer doesn’t show you what did it or how it happened.
You have to go to the ovie to find out, as I won’t tell you (or show you either). That is the surprize part of the movie.
Cloverfield employs an unknown cast of actors, and focuses around 6 people, Rob Hawkins, his brother Jason, Rob’s semi ex girlfriend, Beth McIntyre, his friends Hud, Lily and Marlena.
While attending a going away party for Rob, this group of people experienced what they though was an earthquake. They soon find out, that it is something terribly worse.
This film is shot through a camcorder angle, as Rob Hawkins’ friend Hud, was playing the videographer for Rob’s going away party. The whole film is shot this way, in some ways it makes the film more believable, and in other ways, it is detrimental to Cloverfield.
If you have ever seen The Blair Witch Project, you know that this type of filming can work, and work well. Where Cloverfield fails is the film is so herky jerky at times, it is hard to watch. At some point during the film, they should have cut away from the camcorder angle. It would have been much more enjoyable.
I spent time in New York City last summer, so in that respect, this movie made more of an impact on me, than it may with other people. There are moments that will make you jump, and others that will make you squirm.
As a whole, the story is pretty good, and the special effects are certainly solid. This is a fun, but not perfect popcorn flick.
Sci Fi fans will certainly want to check this out!

Rob Halford is opening up his archives, to give you a release with some demos and previously unreleased tunes from his stint in his band, Fight.
Chances are, if you are a Fight fan, you may have most of the songs on this disc. If you don’t, this is disc worth grabbing.
Into the Pit, and Nailed to the Gun are awesome tunes. If you haven’t picked up a Fight disc, those tunes are a must own for metal fans. The new songs, Now You Die, Forbidden, Down, Beast Denies, and Dead Men Talk are all solid tunes.
Some of the demo cuts are in fairly raw form complete with errors, which make this an interesting, if not essential listen. Rob Halford fans will be quick to grab this one. All others ought to give this one a look.

FILTER is back.
After a five-year hiatus and a successful run with Army of Anyone, RICHARD PATRICK has reclaimed his legacy with FILTER for ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED, due out this May.
Produced by Josh Abraham (Slayer, 30 Seconds to Mars, Velvet Revolver, Staind, Courtney Love), PATRICK calls ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED his “howl in the night,” a harsh indictment of civilization that doesn’t exclude himself from its vision of a world falling apart.
The album’s first single “Soldiers of Misfortune” will be released later this month. PATRICK describes the soaring anthem–with its U2/Bowie flavor and stacked backdrop of buzzing electric guitars–as a “sardonic anti-war/pro-troops song.” The first-person narrative was inspired by a letter from a FILTER fan who had enlisted in the Army reserves to get his college tuition paid; in his final year of college, he was shipped off to Iraq where he died from a rocket attack and small arms fire after just a few days of duty.
FILTER will preview tracks from ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED alongside such FILTER classics as “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” “Take a Picture” and others when they hit the road for special California club shows next month. The band will follow the shows with additional U.S. shows just prior to the album’s release, mixing headlining shows, festival appearances and radio shows.
ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED features such collaborators as guitarist/songwriter John 5, guitarist Wes Borland and drummer Josh Freese and marks FILTER’s first release in five years since The Amalgamut. Pointed and passionate, the new album traces PATRICK’s own anger and shame with the state of things, from the intense alternative industrial blast of “The Take,” “What’s Next” and “Hatred is Contagious,” the ultimate resignation of “Kill the Day” and “Lie After Lie” to the tentative hope expressed by “Only You” and the ambient soundscape of the closing “Can Stop This.”

San Diego trio, Thieves and Liars is simply the best three piece band I have heard since American Dog, and they may actually be better.
The band tracked most of the songs live on When Dreams Become Reality. This is an old school recording process, but for Thieves & Liars it totally works. This CD sounds great.
Before I move into the songs, I must mention the booklet that comes with the disc. It is fully illustrated with complete song lyrics. I find CD booklets of this quality to be rare with today’s artists. Thieves & Liars didn’t go the cheap route for this one.
When Dreams Become Reality is a major upgrade when compared to most of today’s rock artists. This CD has it all! Are you looking for songs with great song writing, and stellar musicianship? Look no further!
You will find some excellent rockers like Road To Nowhere, Slavin’ Away and Run, and amazing Pink Floyd like ballads with Forgotten.
This CD is an ambitious project for the band, as it is a concept album, about the Story of Joseph. I won’t go into the details of the story, you can check that out on your own. Usually concept albums come from bands with a long successful tenure, but this shouldn’t be something to scare you away from Thieves & Liars. If anything, that should tell you that the band took their time with the song writing, and it shows.
When Dreams Become Reality is over an hour long. On this record, you will hear bits of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and AC/DC fused into the band’s music. Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint the band’s true sound, but the songs that rock truly stand out.
This will be a band to watch in 2008. I will certainly catch them live in support of this excellent classic rock record. Check them out on their myspace page here. You can view the band’s video, Slavin’ Away below!

Locomotive Records has set a March 4 U.S. release date for “Unlocking the Past” from JORN, the solo project of former MASTERPLAN vocalist Jorn Lande.”Unlocking the Past” includes some previously unreleased cover songs that were originally considered to be “leftovers” or additional bonus tracks for previous JORN albums. Many of them were never included on any official release. Some brand new covers were also recorded specifically for this CD. Dust has been brushed from these recordings; the remix of “Burn”, “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” (which originally appeared on JORN’s solo debut album “Starfire”), and the remastered version of “On and On” (which was supposed to appear on a MILLENIUM covers album a few years back), complete the track listing of the album.
You can hear JORN’s remake of Thin Lizzy’s Cold Sweat below:
Former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen has released a video for her tune, Die Alive. This is from her new album, My Winter Storm, which is due out on February 26th, 2008.

Quite possibly one of the biggest hard rock anthems of the 1980’s came from Autograph’s Sign In Please. The tune Turn Up The Radio, was a top 30 hit, and helped push the album Sign in Please to Platinum level status.
It has been a while since I revisited this disc, but I always had fond memories of Autograph, so I decided to dust this one off and give it a few more spins.
Listening to this disc in 2008, I have the tendency to want to rip on this disc. The material here definitely sounds dated, and the song writing is pure cheese. With that being said, I still enjoy this record somewhat, maybe not as much as I did 24 years ago, but it is still listenable.
The cuts Send Her To Me, Turn Up The Radio, Nine Teen & Non Stop, and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend Isn’t Me are certainly catchy. This disc does have a few filler tracks, but nothing is absolutely terrible.
Sign in Please is quite a bit more pop than it is metal, but is still worth giving a spin every once in a while.
If you haven’t tired of the song Turn Up The Radio, it is almost worth the price of admission, when you pick up Sign in Please.

It seems that every few years another new band releases a disc full of AC/DC inspired rock.
The debut release by Rhino Bucket is one of the better ones.
Singer Georg Dolivo sounds just like a Bon Scott clone. Greg Fields has the Angus Young style of playing down pat on this record.
One Night Stand is one of the biggest hits by Rhino Bucket, and this tune is worth the price of admission by itself. This is album exemplifies what a hard rock record should be. You wont find any sappy ballads on this record. It rocks all the way through from beginning to end.
The band lineup has changed but Rhino Bucket is still rocking hard in 2008. Sadly, the record that spawned one of their band’s biggest hits is out of print. You can still find copies of this disc online on EBay and Amazon.com. Hopefully, another record label will reissue this excellent slab of hard rock. Don’t miss out on one of 1990’s better hard rock records.

Gypsy Pistoleros was introduced to the mass public during Rocklahoma 2007. They had one of the more interesting and unique releases last year with Wild, Beautiful Damned.
In 2008, the band has remixed and re-released Wild, Beautiful Damned with a couple of extra cuts in the form of Para Siempre. (That’s Forever for you non Spanish speaking folks.)
Which version you may prefer of the CD is up to your tastes. Some of the songs on Para Siempre have been changed up from the original disc. Cuts like The Crazy Loco Loquito I preferred the original version of. The added cuts Chicas Peligrosa, and the cover, Living La Vida Loca are nice additions so it balances out.
If you never got the opportunity to pick up Wild Beautiful Damned, Para Siempre is the way go. You can find copies available on line at CD Inzane.

When Steve Harris from Iron Maiden recommends a band, I tend to take notice. He has talked favorably about Voodoo Six, and has called their debut, the best he has heard in years.
That was enough to have me search out a copy of the band’s 2006 debut, Feed My Soul. After spinning this disc for the first time, all I can say is, Thank You, Mr. Harris! Voodoo Six delivers the goods!
Singer Henry Rundell has one of those one of a kind 80’s style metal voices, that is quite cool to hear for the first time. His sound falls somewhere between a Jeff Keith from Tesla, and a little bit of Robert Plant.
The band itself leaves me speechless. Voodoo Six has a sound that is a very good blend of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s hard rock. They may not have a completely unique sound, but it is different enough to excite this hard rock fan. In their tunes, I hear elements of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and quite a few others. While their sound may borrow a little from these bands, they don’t sound exactly like any of them, and that is completely cool.
If you want to hear a CD, where guitar solos are not a lost art form, where the bass playing is not a bunch of distortion, where the drum beats will ignite your inner head banger, THIS is the CD to get. Voodoo Six is still very much an unknown band in the U.S. as Feed My Soul has not had a proper release here.
With a disc this good, rock fans that haven’t heard this are truly missing out! This is killer stuff! Voodoo Six will be releasing then 2nd disc in 2008. I highly recommend that you check this band out. Chances are you may find yourself buying two V6 discs this year. Feed My Soul is a very good debut, and is one I will be spinning a lot in 2008.
