Shadowside – Theatre of Shadows (Release Year – 2007)
The Brazilian metal band Shadowside, has been together since 2001, but thanks to Chavis Records, they are starting to make a name for themselves in the United States now.
Theatre of Shadows has been out since 2006, but Chavis Records took a chance a putting this out in the U.S. Market, and I am thankful they did.
Usually, I am not too fond, of metal acts fronted by a female singer. There are a few exceptions to that rule, and Shadowside is one of them. Dani Nolden has an extremely cool, raw voice that is well suited to Shadowside’s style of metal. In fact, her voice is quite unlike anything I have heard before.
At times Theatre of Shadows trades off between Heavy and Power Metal. Some songs have keyboards for an extra melodic layer to the music. The keyboards don’t over power the music, and they are not present through the whole album. There are plenty of double bass drumming throughout this record that will be a catalyst for a massive amount of head banging.
As a whole, I thought Theatre of Shadows was a pretty solid metal album, and a pretty nice introduction to U.S. fans who have not heard them before. Metal fans will certainly want to check the band out when they take the stage at Rocklahoma on Sunday Afternoon, July 13th, 2008.
The Chavis Records version of Theatre of Shadows has a cool cover of the DIO tune, Rainbow in the Dark, as a bonus track. You preview songs off of Theater of Shadows at Shadowside’s myspace page here. Go check them out, they might surprise you!
