Temptation Come My Way completely overhauls the sound from the debut, A Chorus of Obliteration. The metalcore screams are 99% gone, and this release solidifies a sound for that band that is in the same vein as the later Metallica albums. It is a more mainstream approach that should bring mass appeal to this amazing quintet.
The first song that I heard off of this disc was the band’s cover of the Kansas song, Carry On Wayward Son. Once I heard that track, I knew I had to hear more from this group.
Fanatics And Whores is a very heavy head banging tune that put a big smile on my face. This is obviously not a band that is afraid to rock!
Head Down is a song that deserves to be heard on rock radio everywhere. This track is so damn cool, words can not do it justice.
The guitar work of Travis Bailey and Josh Childers is very cool on the song Six Feet Under. This is a heavy rocker with plenty of crunching guitars. David Bunton’s vocals are clean and very enjoyable.
After listening to We Die Young a couple of times, I came to the realization that band is putting a lot more guitar solos into their songs. I am not used to hearing that from a lot of newer bands these days. This is the way it used to be done in the late 80’s, when the guitar solos reigned supreme. We Die Young is another solid offering from The Showdown.
Breath of the Swamp is the heaviest of the songs so far. This song nearly ventures into Pantera like territory. David Bunton nearly sounds like Phil Anselmo on this song.
It Drinks From Me smartly slows the pace back down again. This song reminds me of a Saliva tune. Very Cool!
The title track, Temptation Come My Way, starts with a heavy bass groove that nearly has a Black Sabbath like feel to it. David Bunton breaks out his Anselmo like vocals once again for this heavy groove laden track.
Forget My Name is another instant classic. This is an up tempo rocker that is going to firmly implant itself in my regular play list.
Spitting In The Wind is another good rocker. It isn’t the best song on this disc, but it is another solid slab of rock.
I, Victim (Here’s To The Year) starts to venture a little towards the Nu-Metal side of the fence, and I didn’t really care for this song too much.
I am sure you have heard, Carry on Wayward Son hundreds of times over the years. The Showdown puts a nice metal touch on the song, while staying fairly true to the original. I like the original song, and this cover is pretty cool too. If it wasn’t for this song, I may not have found this band, so I am glad the recorded it.
Death Finds Us Breathing is a very bass heavy mainstream sounding rock song, with a few of those Metalcore screams that I don’t really care for. It is however, a decent track to close out this disc with.
The Showdown shows a lot of maturity on this release, and will be a band worth keeping an eye on for years to come. I enjoyed this disc very much, and will be playing this one quite a bit in the upcoming weeks. To preview some of the tracks below, visit the band’s myspace page here.
If you like it, go buy it. This band deserves your support!

Alabama-based rockers LYNAM will see their new album, Tragic City Symphony, released via New Ocean Media on August 26th.
The first single from the album, ‘Save My Soul’, will impact radio on July 14th. You can currently check out the track at Lynam’s MySpace page.
Tragic City Symphony (artwork pictured at left) features the following tracklisting: ‘Is This A Heartbreak Or A Loaded Gun?’, ‘Enemy’, ‘Lindsay Says’, ‘Just Say Anything’, ‘Save My Soul’, ‘Porn Star’, ‘Can’t Do Anything’, ‘If You Leave’, ‘Make It Alright’, ‘White Trash Superstar’, ‘A Million Ways’, ‘Suffer’.
I stumbled on this disc by listening to the Boneyard’s(XM 41) Breaking Bone show. This is a radio show where they introduce new hard rock and metal music to the Boneyard listeners.
Desert of Tears is a very heavy disc. Judging from the quality of the tunes here, I am surprised that I haven’t heard of these guys before.
I Believe is an explosive metal anthem to start this disc off with. Running Blind is a heavy Iron Maiden style track. Day of Champion is another powerful track that has guitar harmonics that sound very close to George Lynch.
I Will Fly reminds me of some older Leatherwolf tunes. Rich Wilde really howls on the vocals, on this cool track.
The lyrics on Desert of Tears sounds like something Bruce Dickenson would write. This is another excellent Maiden style track.
It Ain’t Over is one the only track I didn’t like on this disc. It breaks up the pace on the album as this is a low tempo number, but I didn’t care for it.
Live By the Sword, Soldier’s Fate, Chosen One are all very good heavy tracks.
Freedom starts with a very cool acoustic guitar and builds into a beast of a metal anthem. This is a very cool track to end this disc with.
The guitar tandem of Chris Atchison, and Craig Behrhorst, absolutely smoke on this disc, and vocalist Rich Wilde sings like he is out to put the Ruffians on the Heavy Metal map. Judging from the Desert of Tears CD, this band will be one to watch in 2007.
Metal fans need to check out this killer disc!

In 2003, Universal Pictures released a real clunker of a movie called Hulk. After seeing that disaster of a film, I was on the fence about seeing Marvel Studios latest concoction, the Incredible Hulk.
This movie is not a sequel of the original, in fact, The Incredible Hulk relaunches the Hulk franchise with a new story, a new cast and a fairly new direction.
In this movie, Edward Norton (Fight Club) stars as Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings) at Banner’s love interest, Betty Ross, and William Hurt as General Thunderbolt Ross.
The Incredible Hulk cast had a much better story to work with, than the 2003 flick. As result, Edward Norton played a good version of Banner. William Hurt did a solid job. Liv Tyler, on the other hand, was ultimately forgettable.
Tim Roth, who is the Hulk’s antagonist in this movie, is easily the character that was the most fun to watch.
This Hulk looks a lot less cartoony than the version from 2003, and a little more scary. The special effects, and CGI are top notch in this film. The action is also quite good.
If anything, the Incredible Hulk erases the awful memories of the 2003 flick. This movie will not challenge Iron Man for top grossing movies of 2008, but it is a solid film that is worth checking out on the big screen. Marvel should have another hit on their hands!

If you are looking for something new to rock out to, check out the reviews each day this week. 2006 and 2007 had some very good releases that were barely a blip on the radar for most hard rockers.
Two of 2008’s biggest releases, Judas Priest’s Nostrodamus, and Motley Crue’s Saints of Los Angeles hit one week apart from each other, as well as Jorn’s Lonely are the Brave. All of these will be featured at HRH in the coming days.
Also, in the daily videos, we will feature some heavy metal cover song videos, as well as our weekly, Sink or Swim Video on Thursday.
Shadows Fall has a new video for their single, Forevermore. This is off the band’s 2007 CD, Threads of Life.
Back in 1989, When Black ‘N Blue broke up, current KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer was looking for a new band/project to join. His associate producer from the Black ‘N Blue Album, In Heat, Pat Regan had recently signed singer/songwriter Teresa Straley.
Thayer agreed to play the guitar on this new group which would become Harlow. Most of the songs were already written by the time Thayer came in, but his guitar work certainly helped to improve the songs on this disc.
Harlow recently announced that they were reuniting and will be playing at Rocklahoma. I had to scramble to find a copy of this record. I originally owned this on cassette back in the 90’s but did not replace it until now. I recalled liking this band, but couldn’t remember much about the songs or the music.
What is even funny, is that I found out after the fact that this is NOT the Harlow that will be playing on the Retrospect Records stage at Rocklahoma. There was a second band with the same name from Kansas City, that will be reuniting for this gig (and I thought this band was obscure).
Much to my surprise, the most powerful instrument in Harlow is not Thayer’s guitar, but is the voice of Teresa Straley. Her style reminds me of a cross between Lita Ford and Heart’s Nancy Wilson. She has the ability to let loose with a powerful metal screams, and then sing with a very clean sounding voice. Thayer’s guitar work shines on this record, but he definitely takes a back seat to Straley on this disc.
The music on this disc fluctuates between early 90’s hair metal and AOR, but it is highly listenable. Some of the best songs on this disc are Chain Reaction, Empty, Cry Murder, Beyond Control (which was dedicated the family and friends of Pan Am Flight 103) and Pictures.
This disc can be found for very little cash at Amazon.com, and is worth grabbing if you are a fan of early 90’s rock.

It has been 26 long years since Canadian musician, Aldo Nova, released his first album. His 1982 debut feature material put together almost entirely by himself, with a little bit of help with some studio musicians. On the strength of his hit single Fantasy, this album went all the way to # 8 on the Billboard charts. This album would eventually go multi platinum in the United States.
The sound of this record is pretty common for the early 80’s. It is a keyboard laded pop metal, that reminds me a lot of the early sound of Bon Jovi. Aldo Nova proves to be a very good guitar player. When you hear him cut loose on the guitar, you will wonder where he has been hiding, and why you haven’t heard more about him over the years.
For this listener, Fantasy is the hardest song on this album, and one of the few songs I still enjoy. The rest of the material is more in the line of AOR than hard rock.
Yes, there are some heavy guitar riffs here and there, but I have heard a lot of better material than this over the years. If you are looking for a copy of the tune Fantasy, this is place to get it. While this release may have been somewhat influential to the hair metal scene, It is only slightly above average to my ears.
This CD has been out of print for a while, but was recently remastered and reissued in April 2008. AOR and melodic rock fans may want to check this disc out.

Dokken’s tenth studio album, Lightning Strikes Again, brings the group’s sound full circle. Taking its title from a track on the band’s 1985 classic Under Lock & Key, the 12 new songs ( including the breakout tracks “Standing On The Outside,” “Oasis,” and “Heart To Stone”) capture the signature mix of barbed-wire riffs and razor-sharp melodies that made Dokken one of the most dominant creative and commercial forces of melodic hard rock in the 1980s.
Beginning in July, Dokken heads out on the road for a 40-city U.S. tour with fellow headbangers Poison and Sebastian Bach. But before the “Live, Raw & Uncut Summer Tour 2008” visits your neck of the woods, Don Dokken and bandmate Jon Levin paid a visit to the Rhino offices to autograph some posters -which you can win in Rhino’s latest sweepstakes.

In November of each year, The After Dark Horror Festival, and the 8 Films to Die For, are released in theaters across America. In 2006, I saw several of these films, and in 2007, their were no theaters close enough to take in the latest horror concoctions. Lucky for me, the second series of the 8 Films to Die For have been released to DVD.
Like most of the films in the series, The Deaths of Ian Stone has your basic no name cast, but doesn’t suffer as a result of it.
Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) plays the character Ian Stone who is quickly established as an American who in a twist of fate is killed only to wake up in a new life, only to start the chain all over again. Instead of living the same day all over again, ala Ground Hog Day, He is killed and reborn into a new life at precisely 5:03 each day.
As the mystery unravels, you will find out why Mr. Stone is being killed, and who is killing him, with a cool climax that almost begs for a sequel.
This movie borrows from several flicks that I have enjoyed including The Matrix, Aliens, The Butterfly Effect and more. While it may not be 100% original, it does introduce some new ideas instead of just being another lame slasher or torture flick. The story was just interesting enough to keep me curious, and the special effects were pretty good, for a low budget movie.
If you are a fan of horror movies, you may want to rent this one and give it a shot. I thought it was cool, and you might too!

Venedetta has a new video, I Executioner. This tune is definitely in the vein of 80’s metal. Check it out!
Jorn Lande returns with his fifth studio album, Lonely Are the Brave.
I have said it before, and I will say it again. Jorn Lande is one of the premiere vocalists in heavy metal today. Sooner or later metal fans are going to take notice of this amazing singer. His vocals on this album are superb, and are empowered by the outstanding guitar duo of Tore Moren and Jorn Viggo Lofstad. With the exception of bassist Sid Ringsby, Lande’s solo band remains unchanged since his 2006 release the Duke, and as a result, have turned in a tighter performance on this disc.
The opening cut and title track, Lonely Are the Brave is a pretty good way to open up this disc. This is a very strong heavy rocker that gets things going nicely. I expect to hear this song a lot in the coming years.
If Lande decided to steal an unreleased song from Ronnie James Dio, Night City would be it. This song is much in the vain of the Black Sabbath front man’s solo material. This tune seems to get better with every listen.
Some of the other highlights include:
Shadow People is the type of song that will create new JORN fans. This hard charging rocker is one that will get your blood pumping.
Promises is not only an excellent song, but it might be one of the best JORN songs yet. This sounds like it could of been a leftover song from Worldchanger or Out to Every Nation. Yes, it is that good.
The song Hellfire originally appeared on the Beyond Twilight release, The Devils Hall of Fame, from 2001, on which Lande was the lead singer. This version is nothing short of amazing. It is dark and moody kind of metal that you would expect to hear on a Black Sabbath record. It is an awesome tune, and absolutely essential to all JORN fans.
My CD is the Limited Edition and has two bonus tracks, Stormbringer, and Like Stone In Water.
Stormbringer is a cover of the classic Deep Purple tune which featured Ritchie Blackmore and David Coverdale. This version is much heavier than the original, and in my opinion surpasses it greatly.
If there are any negatives on this CD, it would be in the mixing of the bass on this record. Where were you Mr. Ringsby? Your bass is mixed so low it is hardly audible.
Am I a little biased towards Mr. Lande and company? Damn straight I am! JORN hasn’t released one disc in this decade that has disappointed me, and Lonely Are The Brave is no exception. This is another must own release for all Jorn Lande fans everywhere!

On August 1st, EXTREME will release through Frontiers Records in Europe “Saudades de Rock”, their first studio album in thirteen years which will coincide with their first world tour in over twelve years.
The iconic rock foursome – vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo – recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. “Saudades de Rock” boasts 13 tracks (plus one exclusive bonus track for the European edition, Americocaine demo 1985, the very first studio demo recording of Extreme) including the infectious roar of “Star,” the groove-laden, swagger of “King“, a raw funk rock anthem called “Learn To Love” and the expressive ballad “Ghost.”
“A record is what makes a band vital”, says Bettencourt. “For the fans, it’s like, ‘Show me if you still got it.’ And we’ve done that. I really think this is the best record we’ve ever done.”
Based on the enthusiasm of the rock aficionados and diehard fans that have followed the band since its self-titled debut, Extreme’s 2008 ‘Take Us Alive’ world tour is destined for success and will bring the band to an exclusive gig in Europe at Milan’s Rock of Ages Festival on September 13th. Showcasing material from the majestic new album and classics from discs like 1990’s multi-platinum, “Pornograffitti”, not to mention 1992’s critically acclaimed “III Sides to Every Story”, the members of Extreme are thrilled to be heading out on the road.
“Saudades de Rock” finds the men of Extreme excited to be back together and playing to their collective strengths. And clearly, the accomplishment is not lost on them. “It didn’t take long for us to be reminded of what we were capable of,” Cherone enthuses. “We always knew Extreme was special. We always knew it was a matter of time.”
It’s a sentiment that carries over to the title of Extreme’s phenomenal new disc. “’Saudades’ was always a beautiful word to me,” Nuno explains. “It expresses a longing; an underlying sadness for something or someone that’s been missing in your life, and never quite sure if it will ever return. In this case, for us, it’s Rock and Roll. Saudades de Rock.”
“Saudades de Rock” European track listing includes:
Star; Comfortably Dumb; Learn To Love; Take Us Alive; Run; Last Hour; Flower Man; King Of The Ladies; Ghost; Slide; Interface; Sunrise; Peace (Saudade); Americocaine (demo 1985 – European bonus track).
Full streaming of “Star” will be available on the band and Frontiers’ myspace sites from Tuesday June 17th.

After months of searching, Crazy Lixx have found their new guitarist in 19-year old Andy Dawson (Ex-SHARP). “We are very satisfied with our new member. He was our first chioce afer having gone through all the applications that we recieved and we’re completely confident that he will be a worthy successor to Vic Zino.
Andy is a very talented guitar player and despite his young age he has a mature style of playing combined with lots of experience of performing live on stage from his last band SHARP.
In addition, and this is probaly one of the most important aspects for us, he fits perfectly in the group on a personal level; He shares the same visions for Crazy Lixx and will contribute with the same energy and commitment as the rest of us in order to push the band forward. – Danny, Joey & Luke
The New York five piece band, Rev Theory have released their sophomore effort, Light It Up, on Interscope Records.
If the first single, Hell Yeah, is any indication what is in store for this band, Rev Theory could have a platinum album in the hands. Hell Yeah is easily the best stadium anthem that I have heard in a long time. This Guns ‘N Roses flavored tune could be the one that takes Rev Theory to the next level.
What I think is kind of cool about this band is they have a sound that crosses three decades of rock. On Light It Up, I hear elements of G ‘N R, Alice in Chains, and a mix of Hinder and Nickelback.
There are several songs on this disc that have major hit potential including Hell Yeah, Favorite Disease, Broken Bones and Wanted Man.
Every time a play this disc, it seems to get a little bit better. Their is no doubt in my mind that Rev Theory has a hit record on their hands. How far it goes is up to you! If you check out one modern rock band in 2008, give Rev Theory a look. I think you will like what you hear.
