Hanoi Rocks – The Nottingham Tapes DVD (2008)
Before Poison ever unlease Talk Dirty to Me on the world, there was another up and coming glam rock band, Hanoi Rocks, that should have been the next big thing.
The Nottingham Tapes catches Hanoi Rocks in their prime, performing live at the Rock City club in Nottingham, England, back in 1984. The video and audio quality isn’t the greatest, but it is above average. This footage does a good job capturing the live spirit of the band.
It wasn’t too much longer before drummer Razzle, lost his life in the accident with Motley Crue front man Vince Neil. This turn events seemed to make Hanoi Rocks self destruct.
The Nottingham Tapes will make you wonder what would have happened if the band didn’t break up back in the 80’s. The band had all the tools that would bring them success, but split apart before that would happen. This DVD is the best way to catch them in their most popular lineup from ’84.
If you are a fan of Hanoi Rocks, The Nottingham Tapes is must own DVD. It may not be the best footage you have ever seen, but you will be glad to see this part of hard rock history.

I’ve been a fan of the band for a long time but never had the complete recorded works. But I’ve started to rediscover their music of late and recently viewed the Live at the Marquee Live concert, which I simply adore. Hanoi Rocks had a strong vitality and an urgency, pure energy that influenced a host of bands, but as far as I’m concerned none had that extra thing that HR had. I’m looking forward to seeing the Nottingham Tapes gig, because of the pure energy of the bands music and also for the way that Andy McCoys songs seem to resonate with me, like they do other fans, but it’s the complete execution of the performance by the entire band which makes them so convincing. Hanoi Rocks, you really should have been a huge act.
This is a really good DVD. I think the lo-fi quality really captures Hanoi Rocks who had more in common with punk and glam than with American hair metal buffoons. I really didn’t appreciate Hanoi Rocks back in the 80s, because I just lumped them in with the endless stream of rotten bands that used a lot of hairspray and only recently (particularly after last year’s Street Poetry) have a realized that they were a fantastic band.
I reviewed this too:

And if you’re interested, Sami Yaffa is now in a band called Mad Juana (in addition to filling the late Arthur “Killer” Cane’s shoes in the re-formed New York Dolls). I also reviewed that:
