One of the biggest releases of 2008, Metallica’s Death Magnetic hit stores yesterday. Did you buy a copy of the CD yet? If so, what are your thoughts on it?!
Love it? Hate it? Tell us what you think!
Maybe you need to see a doctor ?
Loved the music, a great album by any stretch. The mistake i made was buying the retail CDl. Safe to say that CD is going back to the shop for a refund. Untill Metallica re-release it with a decent sounding version I will not be buying it again.
For such a great album why on earth does the retail CD version sound like being jabbed in the ear repeatedly with a screw driver and the version rip from guitar hero 3 sound well as it should be.
first off has anyone of my friends bothered to listen to the album on my playlist?
ok well i personally love the album. it is a culmination of everything that metallica has made, including the half liked/half hated st anger.
you can be like every other dick ass blowhard that criticizes anything past the black album as being garbage, or sell out material. but if it were not for those albums (which respectively i like them both but i like wah pedals in my metal so blues this) you would not have the merge of sound that is death magnetic
you have the return of the double bass pedal, from and justice for all, you have these dueling guitar solos, which could be considered from every album but i think mostly stem from ride the lightning, and then you put the bass back in, one thing left out from the justice cd.
but you also have all the experimentation of guitar sounds that came from the load and reload albums, not to mention the ever growing power of james hetfeilds voice, in both screaming rage and calm hinderance.
now the real looking comes when you add st anger in this mix. it was a nessacary evil in the terms that it while it was not their best material, it was something to put on a pedastal just the same, and live play of this material proves this.
basically its saddens me to no end that critics world wide simply assume that that metallica did not look at the the two loads(haha) and st anger, or the black album, while making this album. yes it was said that this album would be somewhat of a throwback, but its not just the same old metallica. it is fusion of a different styles of music that they have experiemented with over their 27 year career.
we all look for growth and believe in coming around full circle
metallica in my opinion has done just that.
I’ve had it for a couple of days, listening in my car to and from work-About 20 mins. each way-and I’m just now on song #6 (?). They’re not trying for radio play conformity–good, just seems to run long. So far, I like what I hear…Enough to say I’m glad I bought it.
I may agree,….not a full return but closer than they’ve come since ’88. This new cd does kick some ass though! Too bad Hetfield’s voice didn’t have an echo, like on Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets, or even Justice. It would’ve improved the vocals, cuz James in his mid-40s ISN’T James in his early 20s. I’m a huge fan, so please don’t bitch about my observation.
Not quite a return to form, but pretty damn close!
Some great tracks on here, my favourites are The day that never comes, Judas Kiss, and Broken beat and scarred
I’d give this album an 8, Ride the lightning a 10, and St Anger a 3
I wasn’t gonna till we opened one up and played it in the store. Best thing they’ve done since “…And Justice For All”!!! Now if only Megadeth would get back on track!
Liked the new CD. They’ve gone back to their roots. Check out my blog if you get a chance. Just started it. I wrote about the new album as well. Thanks.
A lot of hoopla sorrounded this release, and for good reason. After turning into a bunch of whining babies for Some Kind of Monster, they had a lot to prove. This is definately a return to their roots, with long, complex arrangements and a quick paced tempo but it’s not quite the Metallica of old. There are some great tracks, like Cyanide, but for the most part, the songs all lack a hook, something to grab you. It’s a solid outing nevertheless, but I must confess, I’m a little disapointed. I think we can all be assured, from this point on, we will never see the likes of Master of Puppets or Kill Em’ All again. If they were ever going to hit those highs again it would have been on Death Magnetic. Oh well, maybe we should just be glad we ever had them at all.
I bought it. Hot Topic had it for $5 so I figured I’d pony up the dough. I love it so far.
