Once Nothing is part of the metalcore scene, and this is something that I can’t really listen to.
My question to you metalcore fans out there is, do you like this style of vocals? What is it about this type of music that you enjoy.
As far as Once Nothing is concerned, the band itself is very good. The guitar tandem of Josh Branas and David Burkes is quite talented. There are plenty of cool chugging riffs and solos all over this CD. The rhythm section of Giuseppe Capolupo and Steve Lucarelli is pretty good too. I thought the music was very tight, and I got a kick out of hearing some cowbell on some tunes.
My biggest problem with Once Nothing is their singer Todd Lowry. He is one of those infamous cookie monster type of singers, that sounds like he is trying to deep throat the microphone. I just don’t get this style of vocals at all. I know Metalcore has an audience, but I can’t listen to this without struggling to get through it. The music is good, but the vocals are completely lost on me. This band is extremely talented and could really start to go some places if they would employ a singer who can sing, instead of grunt.
