“The Right To Rock” still echoes the sentiments of a generation and remains one of the defining anthems of 80’s Heavy Metal Music. And KEEL, the band that created it, is finally poised to revisit their legacy and reunite on stage for the first time to celebrate over two decades of good music and good times. 2009 will mark the band’s 25th anniversary, and the passing of twenty years since the classic KEEL lineup performed on stage together.
Ron Keel, Marc Ferrari, Bryan Jay & Dwain Miller are preparing to perform a select number of dates in 2009. Due to the high visibility the act continues to receive, the members finally feel the time is right to deliver the show fans everywhere have been clamoring for: a KEEL reunion.
In 1985, “The Right To Rock” became the fastest-selling debut album in A&M Record’s history. The title track was a hit on radio & MTV and remains a staple on VH1 Classic, in addition to the group’s subsequent hits “Tears Of Fire,” “Because The Night,” “Somebody’s Waiting” and “Rock & Roll Outlaw.” They developed a reputation as one of the genre’s most entertaining live acts, opening for heavyweights like Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and many others. KEEL sold over 2 million albums and was proclaimed Best New Band by Metal Edge Magazine, Circus Magazine, and Rock Scene.
Through the years, the nucleus of the band has remained close friends, working together in various musical and business enterprises. Vocalist Ron Keel has maintained a high profile with a variety of projects and has remained intensely active as a recording and touring musician. He has continued to embrace and promote his time in KEEL in countless interviews, and his live shows have proudly included the KEEL hits. Guitarists Marc Ferrari and Bryan Jay have continued to write, record, and perform and have remained in the industry via music publishing, song licensing, and other business ventures. When Ron’s band passed through LA on tour, they were joined on stage by Marc & Bryan – playing a medley of KEEL classics, and proving to themselves and the fans that the magic was still as strong as ever.
Unlike most of their contemporaries, none of the members has ever performed as KEEL since 1989. “It would not have been right,” expresses Ron. “Even though it was my last name, KEEL was a true band and I have always taken a stand against performing under that name with different musicians. I’ve had a number of bands in the years since, including Fair Game, IronHorse and K2 – but there’s only ever been one KEEL and without Bryan, Marc, and Dwain I wouldn’t be doing this.” The four original members will be joined on stage by Ron’s long-time bassist Geno Arce, who spent six years with him in IronHorse.
A new web site has been launched to establish an internet home for the KEEL Reunion: http://keelreunion.com
The KEEL “Debut Reunion Concert” will take place in Hollywood on Saturday, January 31st. The location for this historic event will be Club Vodka at The Knitting Factory – visit the web site and stay tuned to MySpace for details.
Recent highlights have included KEEL’s live version of “The Right To Rock” on the “Hollywood Rocks” boxed 4-CD collection, and the band also participated in the accompanying documentary from Cleopatra Records/Ultra Films – Ron, Marc and Bryan contributed a candid and insightful interview segment to the project, telling tales of Metal’s heyday, and discussing their career and the possibility of a KEEL reunion.
And in 2008, for the first time ever, KEEL’s rare independent debut album “Lay Down The Law” was finally released on CD by Shrapnel Records, digitally remastered with new packaging.
Plans are for KEEL to reunite at a select number of festivals and showcase dates to perform all their hits and classic favorites in celebration of 25 years of rock & roll history.

Joan Jett’s Nissan Live Sets performance on Yahoo! Music is now live. Visit the link below to watch this rare recorded live set of the iconic rocker and her band, The Blackhearts. The set includes performances of hits like “Bad Reputation,” “Cherry Bomb,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” “Do You Wanna Touch Me” and a revealing on-stage Q&A with fans from the audience.
It’s an all-star assemblage as members of such great hard rock bands as Foo Fighters, Queensryche, Dio, Alice Cooper, ZZ Top, Dokken, KISS, L.A. Guns, Marilyn Manson, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, King’s X, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Ratt, Styx, Toto, Shadows Fall and more all jam out together on some of the most beloved holiday songs of all time (including “Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer”)..
The kick is in the chemistry between the musicians as members of different bands perform together on the material to create a one-of-a-kind listening experience! Motorhead’s Lemmy, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, for instance, team up on “Run Rudolph Run,” a song popularized by Chuck Berry. This is just one of 12 such irresistible pairings.
“This is a metal CD you will want to listen to all year round,” says Wendy Dio, who put the project together with Bob Kulick and Brett Chassen. “It has been a very exciting and exhausting project, but we have managed to get an allstar cast together.”
Ironically, the hardest person to get was Dio himself as he doesn’t sing
Christmas songs. Wendy hounded him for days, finally getting him to listen to Kulick’s arrangement of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Dio liked it, added a few bits, recorded it at Kulick’s studio, and got Tony Iommi to add his signature guitar sound. The result is a very Sabbath Christmas song. Rounding out the circle of familiar characters on this track are Dio bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Simon Wright.
“The Metal Xmas album was a great opportunity to pay homage to my least favorite holiday,” says Dio, “and what a lineup of musicians to do it with! The arrangements of the classic noel songs are fresh and heavy with rock’n’roll, and the performances are equally classic. It’s a magical way to change your holiday listening.”

Formed in May 1994 by STRYPER guitarist Oz Fox and ex-STRYPER bassist Tim Gaines, SIN DIZZY’s LP sold well among the Christian metal fans, especially STRYPER devotees. I have to admit I cringe every time I hear a band is from the Seattle area, mainly because I still hold all of the “grunge” bands responsible for killing the hard rock scene back in the 90’s. Of course there are exceptions namely Queensryche, Metal Church, War Babies to name a few. Now you can add Underride to that list. Underride are about as far from “grunge” “post grunge” or any other genre with the word grunge in it as you can get. These guys are a straight up in your face, kick ass, take no prisoners, make no apologies, rock-n-roll band and they will be more than happy to show you on their new album “One of Us”, which is actually their third full length album and along with 2 e.p.’s I am really surprised I had never heard of them before. With a sound that falls somewhere between Beautiful Creatures and Velvet Revolver they definitely made a believer out of me.
“One of Us” gets started with “Side By Side” try to picture if you can Joe Leste singing for the Backyard Babies. Lead singer “Rev” channels Joe Leste to perfection with bassist “El Barto” laying down some fat bass lines, while guitarists “Rex Nomad” and “Dr. Pondscum” battle back-n-forth. What really surprised me was the fact that drummer “Double A” arms and feet did not fall off after not only this song but the whole album he is playing at 120 mph.
Oh before I forget, if you are looking for a ballad on this album you will be sadly disappointed, there is nothing on this album that even comes close to a ballad. As a matter of fact there is nothing that even comes close to being considered a mid tempo song. But every song is worth rolling down the windows and being played at maximum volume.
Just as “Rev” channeled his best Joe Leste on “Side By Side” he channels Scott Weiland just as well on “Candy Girl” it reminds me a lot of “Crackerman” off of STP’s debut “Core”. It has a great groove with a sing a long chorus. “On The Radio” is up next and it seems like “Rev” finds his own voice instead of mimicking other people and it is actually quite good. Like the two songs prior it has a great sing a long chorus with out giving up it’s heaviness.
“Throw It Away” is a slower rocker with a Theory of a Deadman feel to it, it isn’t a bad song but I could also live without it too.
“Upstart Coming Up’ is a balls out rocker and it has the one thing that was pretty much missing from the four songs before it…a solo a pretty damn good solo at that. “Kink Into My Heart” finds the band back in STP territory but once again it has a great groove and another smokin’ solo.
The rest of “One of Us” is filled with more straight up rock-n-roll with “Lights Off Baby”, “Riot Stick” and “No Means No” the best of the bunch.
Hopefully with the release of “One of Us” Underride will finally get the attention they deserve. They definitely got my attention and they delivered with some kick ass music in return.

On December, 05, 2008, the self titeled debut album of Voodoo Circle will be released via AFM Records. Guitar player Alex Beyrodt founded this new band, that is deeply rooted in classic Hard Rock. The band´s name will soon be known for first class musicianship and the ability to evoke pure magic. Here we have Alex Beyrodt (guitars), David Readman on vocals, Mel Gaynor (drums), Mat Sinner (bass) and Jimmy Kresic on keyboards.
Chad Kroeger laughs when asked if the phenomenal sales for 2005’s “All the Right Reasons” gave confidence to Nickelback as it set out to make its sixth studio album, “Dark Horse.” “No, because look what we have to try to live up to,” says Kroeger, who co-founded the quartet in 1995 in Alberta, Canada. “There’s a mountain sitting behind us. We’ve got to try and put something out now that’s going to stand up to that. So for us, the bar has been raised ridiculously high.”
“Dark Horse,” which comes out this week on Roadrunner and was co-produced by Mutt Lange, certainly has a target to clear. Buoyed by seven multiformat hit singles and five No. 1 videos — and apparently unaffected by widespread critical drubbing — “All the Right Reasons” has sold 10 million copies worldwide, according to Roadrunner, and spent a staggering 110 consecutive weeks in the top 30 of the Billboard 200.
First single “Gotta Be Somebody” has already sold more than half a million downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. “I had the chorus, and we recorded it, actually, when Mutt went home to go spend some time with his son. Before he came back I played him this chorus over the phone, and he was like, ‘Oh, I want to get working on that song as soon as we get back to the studio!'”
“Dark Horse” is Lange’s first full album production credit since ex-wife Shania Twain’s last album in 2002. “I think Mutt was coming into a situation where he knew Nickelback fans were happy with everything we’d been putting out so far,” Kroeger says. “He didn’t really want to change the band too much; he just wanted to bring in a slightly different perspective and a slightly different influence. It definitely still sounds like Nickelback, but you’re definitely going to hear a couple different flavors.”
Florida based metal outfit X-THIRTIEN has signed on with CHAVIS RECORDS for their debut release ‘YOU’RE NEXT’. X-THIRTIEN is comprised of U.S. and European based musicians featuring Joe Russell, Johnny Osborn, Rollie Feldman, Mathias Lang, Tracy Ferrell, and Erik Zvanut.
2 years in the making, ‘YOU’RE NEXT’ is a concept album that tells the saga of good versus evil, a man transformed into superman, in conjunction with a band transformed into a super band. This is a breakthrough concept for the “fan loyal” New Rock genre. Passionate, powerful lyrics are placed inside the thick, heavy sound of X-THIRTIEN. Intense meaning alongside the grooves and riffs certainly becomes cathartic to listeners and fans all alike. The CD was recorded at Third Stone Studios in L.A., produced by Dana and Justin Walden (Sevendust), Mudrock (Godsmack) with the help of world famous Toby Wright (the man behind some of the biggest bands in the business, including Metallica, Alice n Chains and Tantric). Mixing the project to perfection, James Murphy who has done work for Nuclear Blast, Century Media, Roadrunner, Candle Light, Metal Blade, a talented producer/engineer, known for creating intense mixes and massive sounds throughout the record industry.
X-THIRTIEN is taking the album concept and transforming it into a full stage production and heading out on the road bringing the show to the fans. The demand for the band continues to increase. X-THIRTIEN tour dates will begin in 09 throughout the States and may also include shows in Canada, Europe, Japan, South America and Australia.
TELL THE WORLD: X-THIRTIEN, ‘YOU’RE NEXT’ is a definitive concept CD that includes standout songs from the new release such as RUN, FREAK and LET’S GO CRAZY, featuring the title track ‘YOU’RE NEXT’ as well as additional break-through material. X-THIRTIEN perfected its trademark ‘X’ with a mix of guitar heroics, anthemic hooks and hedonistic attitude while playing live shows out on tour. X-THIRTIEN will be together and out on the road, which is exactly where they want to be. Beware of the ‘YOU’RE NEXT’ ‘X’ attack in 2009!
Hinder is back and in a big way with their new release “Take It To the Limit”, which was released on Nov. 4th and rocketed into the Top 5 on the album charts. HRH recently had the chance to talk to Hinder’s skinman Cody Hanson not only about the new album but also, their upcoming tour with Motley Crue and the band’s love for Jaeger. With no one rushing us through the interview Cody and I ended up talking for close to 30 minutes so it is impossible to put everything we talked about down without it running for 3 or 4 pages. I have to say Cody is one of the coolest people I have interviewed, not only for HRH but going back to the days I worked in radio also. Enjoy!
HRH: “Take It To the Limit” is Hinder’s first album in 3 years, with the way the music scene changes so fast these days did the band worry about it taking so long to get the album out?
Cody Hanson: Actually yeah, that is always a concern whenever you are going in. But we were on the road so long and “Extreme Behavior” had so much life that we had to stay out on the road and tour on it as long as we could. But once we got finished we didn’t take a break except for maybe a week and a half if that, then we were writing and going into the studio shortly after so we definitely got it out there as quick as we could.
HRH: You worked with Brian Howes producing again. Did that make the process easier since you had worked with him on “Extreme Behavior”?
Cody Hanson: Oh definitely man! We work so well with Brian, he’s like our sixth member of the band. He’s one of our best friends and he’s amazing so anytime we can work with him it makes it a lot easier.
HRH: “Loaded & Alone” and “Far From Home” are two autobiographical songs. What are some other songs that came out of real life experiences?
Cody Hanson: Well, a lot of our songs are true life experiences, Almost every song on the album is an experience that one of us has had. Austin and I do the majority of the lyric writing but we pull things that we see happening to the rest of the guys as well or even some friends or family members.
HRH: You have a video for “Use Me” and have “Use Me’ and “Without You” on the radio. Are we going to see a video for “Without You” anytime soon?
Cody Hanson: Yeah it should be out already. I wanna say MTV2 just picked it up and Fuse might’ve picked it up I’m not sure. We shot it out in L.A. two or three weeks ago. We had Aimee Teegarden, from “Friday Night Lights” and Kellan Lutz from “Twilight” are both in it.
HRH: What are some of the other songs you would like to see released as singles?
Cody Hanson: Man you know what it is hard for me to say. I’m in love with the entire album, but “the Best Is Yet To Come” is my favorite song on the album so at some point I would definitely like to see that one released and “Up All Night” is another one I would like to see out there.
HRH: Everyone knows Mick Mars played lead and solos on the title track “Take It To the Limit” but he initially contacted you guys to write some songs together. What was your reaction when you found out Mick Mars wants to write songs with you?
Cody Hanson: It was pretty much holy sh*t you have to be f**king kidding me. All of us look up to Motley Crue and they are one of our biggest musical influences, so it is pretty crazy when someone you look up too like that calls and reaches out wanting to work with you, that’s pretty incredible.
HRH: Did anything come out of the writing sessions that we may be hearing in the future?
Cody Hanson: We actually never got a chance to write, but there is a good chance it might happen in the future we are going to be spending some time with them out on the road coming up pretty soon so we’ll see.
HRH: What do you think it is going to be like going out on the road with Motley Crue next year?
Cody Hanson: Um I don’t know man, I am not really sure what to expect because things are so much different then they used to be with those guys but I think it is going to be fun. It is going to be cool to get in front of Motley Crue fans, especially those that aren’t familiar with Hinder. It should be a blast for sure.
HRH: You guys are from Oklahoma City. When you were playing the clubs there did you ever think you would be hanging out with Mick Mars or Playboy Cybergirls, like the ones in the “Use Me” video?
Cody Hanson: I don’t know man I never really thought about it. We were just so focused on gaining new fans and doing what we had to do to get somewhere, at that point it was all business, of course we like to have a good time and stuff but we were really really focused on just getting our music out there. I definitely never thought it would be this way that is for sure.
HRH: You guys are out on the road right now with the Jaegermeister tour with Rev Theory and Trapt. How is that going?
Cody Hanson: It’s awesome we’ve been great friends with the Rev Theory guys for a long time so it’s always great to get back out on the road with them, live it up and have some good times. Of course Jaegermeister is amazing the company and the drink I think we drink more Jaeger than water so it’s great.
HRH: You installed a Jaeger machine on your tour bus so there has to be some wild road stories.
Cody Hanson: Yeah there are always stories, always good stuff going on. We actually just got one of the new pull styles machines and they gave us a road case for it so we can take it anywhere we want to go without it getting all messed up.
HRH: Your first album “Extreme Behavior” was out for a year before it actually hit big. Did the band get discouraged when it didn’t hit right off?
Cody Hanson: No not really, we knew it was going to be a very slow build like it is for any baby band. “Get Stoned” did really well for us, it got up to number 2 on the rock charts so we were moving some pretty good units off of that single alone and then of course when “Lips” hit things just got insanely crazy. We were just excited to be out touring and doing our thing.
HRH: “Lips of an Angel” was such a huge song. It is hard for a rock band to get respect when your first hit is a ballad?
Cody Hanson: Well I guess it depends on who you are talking about in the press and the reviews I read all the time there are so many people that just f**king hate us with a passion but all that matters to the band is our fans love the music that we write, if they pick up the album and the music touches them on some level and they come to the show ready to party then I don’t care what anybody else says.
HRH: Was there any pressure from the record company to write “Lips of an Angel 2”?
Cody Hanson: No it was pretty cool they were actually like nonexistent during the whole process. It gave us the chance to write the album that we wanted to write and record. I don’t know that they are so happy now but we’ll see.
HRH: AC/DC’s “Black Ice” was leaked weeks before the release date. How hard is it for bands to protect their music and make sure that doesn’t happen?
Cody Hanson: It’s pretty tough especially on the label end. Our A&R guy at the label keeps it on lock down, he is really careful about who he gives music too, he basically keeps it all to himself. We were able to have one version, he wasn’t even able to give it to everybody in the band that’s how careful they were.
HRH: Anything you would like to say before we wrap it up?
Cody Hanson: We are out on the road, so come see us and be ready to party and thanks to the fans that support us, we appreciate it they are the reason we do what we do.

British metal legends SAXON will release their new new studio album, “Into The Labyrinth” in Europe on January 12, 2009 (Germany: January 9; USA: January 13) via SPV Records. The CD was recorded at the Twilight Hall in Krefeld, Germany, under the direction of Charlie Bauerfeind. SAXON laid down 13 new songs at BLIND GUARDIAN‘s studio, starting with monumental opener “Battalions Of Steel” through “Demon Sweeney Todd” and“Valley Of The Kings”, which both cover historic events, to the final slide guitar blues track “Coming Home” (fans are already familiar with the electric version of this track from SAXON‘s “Killing Ground” album).
“The new material was written in England and at my house in France,” singerBiff Byford explained. “Stylistically, I would describe the album as an even balance between ‘Lionheart’ and ‘The Inner Sanctum’, a mix of powerful, in-your-face rock songs and pure heavy metal tracks. We’re very happy with the production and proud of ‘Into The Labyrinth’.”
Check out audio samples of the entire album at SPV.de.

This week at HRH, we are counting down the release of Guns N’ Roses long awaited Chinese Democracy CD, which hits Best Buy stores next Sunday. We will be posting Guns N’ Roses videos all week long to celebrate the arrival of Chinese Democracy.
“Welcome to the Jungle” was the very first single and video released by Guns N’ Roses on their debut record “Appetite for Destruction”.
If some of the song titles sound familiar, it is because “Peephole” was originally written for Sammy’s side project “Planet US” that never got off the ground. A different variation of this song can be found on the 2005 Soul Sirkus CD, “World Play”, although it is different from this version. This is a very cool, heavy and moody sounding track. The drums sound like they are going to crash out of your speakers on this song. Awesome!
“Fight For Your Right To Party” is a cover of the Beastie Boys classic tune. There are certain songs that just don’t need to be covered. Sammy tries to put a fun spin on this song, but it just falls flat in my opinion.
I liked the song “Cosmic Universal Fashion” when I first saw the video a few weeks ago. I can see this song being turned into a dance tune with its heavy bass beats.
“Psycho Vertigo” might be one of the heaviest Hagar tracks ever. This guitar riff on this song is wicked. I like this one a lot.
“Loud” ought to be an instant radio hit. This song is the kind of stadium anthem that requires maximum volume. This will like be a staple in Sammy’s live shows everywhere. It is a great tune.
Cosmic Universal Fashion closes out with a cool live treatment of the Van Halen tunes “Dreams” and “Cabo Wabo”.
The Bottom Line: Is this Sammy’s best CD? No, but there are definitely some good songs to feast your ears on. It sounds like Sammy had a lot of fun recording these songs, and that gives the music a very cool vibe. I think there is a little too much rehashed material on Cosmic Universal Fashion. If Sammy would have added a couple of more good original songs, it could have made Cosmic Universal Fashion a great CD, instead of just a good one. Redheads will still want to pick this one up!
