It seems like three or four times a year a new hard rock tribute CD comes out. Name a big band from the 80’s and they probably have one. In light of Guns N’ Roses “Chinese Democracy” finally seeing the light of day, I decided to check out the latest tribute to L.A.’s finest sleaze rockers.
The song selection on this CD is a pretty good mix, and there are a lot of talented musicians involved on this disc including John Corabi, Jason McMaster, Joe Lynn Turner, Ron Keel, Tracii Guns, and Blues Saraceno.
If anything, this tribute CD made me appreciate just how good Guns N’ Roses really were when the original band was together. Some of my thoughts on the songs included are below:
Jason McMaster is up first with his rendition of “Welcome to the Jungle”. Jason is a good choice to sing this song. He has a similar style of vocals as Axl Rose. The thing is, his voice is not as strong, as Rose’s, and it shows just how powerful the originally tune really was. Richard Kendrick does his best to play those awesome guitar parts by Slash, but he falls flat.
Before this CD, I haven’t ever heard of Rose Reiter. This Canadian songstress turns the G N’ R Classic, “November Rain” into a cool piano based ballad. This gives the song a very melancholy type feel. You will hardly recognize this as a Guns N’ Roses song, but it is a very cool version.
Chris Catena takes a very cool Guns tune, and practically destroys it. He doesn’t have the vocals for “Out to Get Me” and it shows. The backup vocals are practically just as bad. Blues Saraceno is the highlight here. His guitar licks smoke on this track. It is too bad that the vocals don’t fit the music.
Corey Craven handles the vocals and guitar duties on “Dust N Bones”. I haven’t heard of him before, but his vocals are solid enough, and his guitar work is solid enough. The song is pretty much the same rendition of the original song, but it sounds good.
As a whole, this disc made me realize just how much I like the original Guns N’ Roses tunes. When the artists involved in this tribute try to reproduce the original songs they often fall flat. Only the songs are given a unique treatment are truly worth checking out. This is a tribute CD for the Guns N’ Roses die hard fans only.
