I have listened to bands from all over the globe, but I don’t recall any coming from Austria. In the case of alt rockers Cornerstone, that would be a
first. Their new CD “Head Over Heels” falls somewhere between alternative, and 80’s style AOR. I could easily hear the more alternative numbers getting played in Starbucks across the U.S., as well some alternative and pop radio stations.
Some of the songs such as “Ready to Go” (my personal favorite) have a more melodic hard edge to them, but the majority of the songs here fall closer to acts like The Cranberries or maybe even REM. Singer Anja Schirmer has a very good voice. I wish she would take a few more chances vocally on these songs, but overall she is very pleasing to listen to. Stefan Wachelhofer provides just enough hard edged guitar licks to make these songs palatable to this hard core hard rocker. Michael Wachelhofer, who doubles as the band’s bass and keyboard player, provides a layer of keyboards that enhances but does not overpower Cornerstone’s music.
This CD also comes with a couple of radio edit tracks, “Regret” and “Fade Away” which are shortened versions of the original songs. You can check out “Fade Away” in the links below.
In 2008, Cornerstone signed a deal with Atom Records which could be the big break the band was looking for. They now have their eyes set on the U.S., and “Head Over Heels” ought to open a lot of new doors for the band. Cornerstone was winner of Alternative Addiction’s Next Big Thing contest, and are already getting airplay on several U.S. stations as a result.
If you like what you hear, you can purchase “Head Over Heels” through the HRH storefront at this link.

On Monday, January 19th, Zakk Wylde’s father died peacefully following surgical complications. The following is a statement from Zakk regarding his passing:
My father, Jerome F. Wielandt who served as an inspiration to me and my music throughout my life has passed away. His influence on my life and the life of others has motivated me in ways that have been both unexpected and profound. My father spent his youth as a orphan in New Jersey who was subsequently drafted to serve his country. A World War II veteran, he participated in the events of D-Day at Omaha Beach as well as Normandy. My father meant more than the world to me, and his passing will no doubt influence my direction in life and career as this new year continues to unfold. I am asking fans to allow time for me and my family to grieve in private.
In lieu of flowers, our family would like donations made in Jerome F. Wielandt’s memory to:
DEBORAH HEART AND LUNG CENTER

Lastly, 1919 Eternal was dedicated to dad, and is my legacy to this unique individual I owe nearly everything to. I shall let that album stand the test of time to his greatness.
That Metal Show – VH1 Classic’s new metal-themed 30-minute talk show hosted by Eddie Trunk – will be featuring Boston rockers EXTREME on February 18th. The band are extending a special, complimentary ticket offer to fans. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
The band’s first studio album in thirteen years, “Saudades de Rock” (pronounced “sow-dodge”) was released in the U.S. on August 12, 2008 on Open E Records and distributed by Fontana. The European version of the CD, which came out on August 1, includes a bonus track, the “Americocaine” demo from 1985, the very first studio recording of the band. The new album sold 6,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 78 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD entered the UK chart at position No. 80.
The iconic rock foursome — vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo — recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. “Saudades de Rock” boasts 13 tracks, including the infectious roar of “Star”, the groove-laden, swagger of “King Of The Ladies”, a raw funk rock anthem called “Learn To Love”, and the expressive ballad “Ghost”.
Extreme are planning to continue their Take Us Alive World Tour in support of the new album. Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt recently commented: “It’s not easy coming back after so long. But you gave us a hell of a welcome back party in every city and more importantly an incredible boost of confidence. We couldn’t have gone into The UK and Europe and Asia without the love that you showed for us here at home. Being the first audiences to connect with… you basically had the responsibility to get us to believe in ourselves once again. And we are deeply indebted to you. Our fans. Hopefully we can reconnect with you in the New Year to thank you in person. And once again… we haven’t forgotten about you in Australia, S. America, Canada, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and everywhere else that we will try to reach.”
“That Metal Show” features hosts Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine (“Crank Yankers”, “Inside the NFL”, “Meet The Creeps”) and Don Jamieson (“Inside The NFL”, “Dice Undisputed”, “Meet The Creeps”) discussing the latest rock news, share stories and arguing about their favorite bands. Each week they are joined by special guests who weigh in with their opinions and offer their own unique viewpoints to each episode.

American Soldier – due out due this spring from Rhino/Atco – finds Queensrÿche once again tackling some heavy subject matter, this time focusing on telling the story of war from a firsthand perspective. Singer and chief songwriter Geoff Tate has spent the last few years conducting extensive interviews with veterans and has crafted their thoughts into this epic tale. American Soldier examines American wars from World War II through Iraq from the viewpoint of those in the trenches and on the frontlines.
“Queensrÿche has always had incredible support from members of the Armed Services,” says Tate. “It seems like after every show, I’d end up speaking with a fan that was or had been involved with the military. The more and more I began to hear their accounts and feelings, the more I really felt a conviction to tell their story. Over the last two years, I’ve conducted dozens of one-on-one interviews with veterans of many different American wars. I listened to their amazing and moving recounts and did my best to examine war through their eyes.”
