Billy Powell, a keyboardist with Lynyrd Skynyrd for 22 years, died Wednesday morning. Powell passed away at his home in Orange Park, Florida, local newspapers report.
Powell had called 911 overnight and said he was having trouble breathing. He was apparently supposed to see a heart specialist earlier this week. Billy Powell was 56 years old.
Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972 following a stint as one of the band’s roadies. He was on the plane that crashed in 1977, taking the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant and seven other people. Powell was seriously hurt in the accident.
Billy Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd after Johnny Van Zant heard him play an introduction to “Free Bird” during a rehearsal time. He had performed with the group as recently as this month, when the remaining members went on a four-day cruise. A new album and three-state tour was in the works but will now be cancelled.
Powell was one of only two Lynyrd Skynyrd members in the band since the plane crash. He was married with four children.

James Christian has started the songwriting sessions for the forthcoming HOUSE OF LORDS studio album. This time he plans to go to Los Angeles and write some killer cuts with Mark Baker, well known as the main songwriter of the SIGNAL “Loud and Clear” masterpiece and House of Lords’ “Demons Down”. The band plans to deliver the new album in late spring for a release in the fall 2009.
JORN is working hard on the recording of the new studio album which he plans to entitled “Spirit Black”. Titles of some of the new songs include “Road Of the Cross”, “Black Heart” and “Rock’n Roll Angel”. Jorn states “People can expect a solid and defined album that will shake the classic metal world and hammer the future Jorn legacy in stone”! Frontiers plans to release the new album in June 2009.
Produced again by PFs own Mat Sinner and engineered & co-produced by none other than Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69), the new Primal Fear album marks the first full comeback by guitarist Henny Wolter and the debut by one of the worldwide most respected guitarists Magnus Karlsson, since he joined the band one year ago! Wolter & Karlsson both participated in the songwriting and pre-production, which took place at Karlsson’s Stuntguitar Studio in Sweden. The band recorded 4 weeks at the famous House Of Music studio incl. Randy Black (drums) and vocalist extraordinaire Ralf Scheepers. After the Xmas break the band recorded some small overdubs and started the mix with long time collaborator Achim Koehler. Finally Ted Jensen mastered the album at the Sterling Sound in New York.
The new Primal Fear album titled with the codename of “16.6” (Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead) will be released in May 2009 by Frontiers Records. The new songs will include a lot of the Wolter/Sinner/Scheepers vibe from the “Nuclear Fire” album, then follow the path of “New Religion” and some real surprises!
Mat Sinner comments: “I’m really proud of our work. The guys of the band and the entire team did a killer job! I love the crystal clear sound of the album and total dedication of the players. The fans of our first albums will really love the new tracks, plus there are a lot of sophisticated more stuff on 16.6 following the path of Seven Seals or New Religion“
Guitarist Henny Wolter added some notes to some song titles:
*Riding The Eagle* – is bringing back that Nuclear Fire vibe with a full speed double bass groove and those typical heavy guitar-Riffs and high speed twin leads that Primal Fear stands for. Above all it´s that mix between full throttle metal and melody with Ralf Scheepers powerful vocals on which Primal Fear built their reputation.
*Six Times Dead (16.6)* – the title track and a super heavy guitar riff, stomping groove with a new approach and a message to the fans; 100% Primal Fear!
*Black Rain* – a nearly 7min. epic with big instrumentation, and a heavy arabian atmosphere. Lots of variations and sophisticated playing & singing. This song strongly carries the handwriting of the new bandmember Magnus Karlsson, who is known for these skilful and tasty arrangements.
*Under The Radar* – another traditional Primal Fear speed rocker, a hymn with the classic Scheepers vibe.
*Torn* – seven minutes of pure music and the most ambitioned song & riff we’ve ever recorded, killer stuff, very groovy and a great melodic vocal line.
*Soar* – pure energy combined with a driving groove, a majestic halftime chorus and a great experimental breakdown part – one of my favourite tracks on the new album
*Hands Of Time* – this will be a real surprise for everybody. There is always at least one track on a new PF album, that is different – this time it’s Hands Of Time with four guys sharing the lead vocals – a very cool song!
Back in December, I caught Rev Theory, Trapt and Hinder live at Bogart’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. I decided to hit this show at the last minute. I haven’t seen Rev Theory or Hinder before, and I definitely wanted to check them out.
I will talk about Rev Theory and Trapt at a later time. The band that I was on the fence about was Hinder until I saw this show.
Hinder put on an arena sized show inside of Bogart’s, which is a capable of holding 1500 people or so.
Hinder’s stage was complete with ramps, a drum riser and a pretty awesome light show. This is nothing new if you have been to concerts before, but their stage set up reminded me quite a bit of those used by a few 80’s hard rock acts two decades before Hinder got their start.
I thought Hinder put on one hell of a show, in my opinion. I think most of the folks in the packed house at Bogart’s would have to agree. They did quite a few songs from their debut CD, “Extreme Behavior”, and their newer disc, “Take It To The Limit”. I enjoyed their set, and as a result of this show, I would definitely go see Hinder again.
After seeing them live, it made me ask this question, that I hope some of Hard Rock Hideout’s readers can answer. Why do people hate Hinder so much? I am sure there are a ton of bands out there, that immediately generate the anti-fan. Talk to any 80’s hard rock fan about music, and mention Nirvana, Hinder or Nickelback in the same sentence and see what kind of reaction you get. Usually, it won’t be a positive one.
So, I ask you, what is it about Hinder that you hate so much? I see a lot of Hinder bashing online, and I always wonder why. They may not be the best band in the world. I think they are good, but they could certainly continue to grow and get better in the future. I wouldn’t expect everyone to like them, but the vile hatred towards these guys is uncanny, in my opinion.
The following clips are from the December show. Watch them, and give me your true opinion of Hinder, good or bad.

According to BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’s Italian Promoter, Bruce Springsteen and AC/DC are set to be the headliners at this year’s Hyde Park Calling.
According to Teletext, Springsteen’s Italian promoter has confirmed that “The Boss” will headline the annual event on June 28th with AC/DC topping the bill on June 27th. It’s also expected that Springsteen will headline Glastonbury on June 27th which is the Saturday night.
As previously reported, according to Ryan Clark from Wrestling-edge.com, during a recent appearance at the 36th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference, Linda McMahon announced that rock and roll icons AC/DC will be performing the theme to Wrestlemania XXV, which is scheduled to take place on April 5th, 2009 at the Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.
There’s no word yet on what song will be used as the theme.
Vince McMahon is said to be a huge fan of AC/DC, getting his first exposure to the band back in 2000 when they were performing on Saturday Night Live the night Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hosted the show for the first time.
My plan in 2009 is to release 2 CD’s if possible. One will be the CD I am working on with Jeffrey Steele & Vicky McGehee, the team that
brought you ‘Battle With The Bottle”. The other CD will be a straight up hard ass rocker , the follow up to ‘Angel Down’. I plan on writing
this record with my band , Roy Z hopefully, & definately Jamey Jasta of the band Hatebreed. Jamey & I are getting together this
month to record some demos. I am not going to make a Hatebreed record, I am going to work on material with Jamey that will be heavy &
anthemic but still make sense next to the other CD’s I have done.
I am also planning on releasing a new DVD in 2009. Can’t go into the details quite yet, but there will be more hi quality live DVD material
coming your way this year, a la ‘Roadrage’. Looks like I will be starting work on the new DVD this month.
Don’t get confused by me doing a ‘country’ album & a ‘rock’ album at the same time. I have
always hated labels. What I have learned over my lifetime is , I don’t make decisions for my voice, my voice makes decisions for me. I have to get out of the way of my own voice so it can be heard loud & clear.
My only objective in making CD’s is to make them ‘good’. Hopefully these 2 new CD’s will fall into this category !
All the best & hope to see you on the road again sometime soon!
