Remember the band Sons of Angels? Hard Rock Hideout featured them in Rare Rock Rewind a little over a year ago. Their debut CD has been out of print since the mid 90’s. It is a good disc that is not typical of the hair metal coming out in the late 80’s or early 90’s.
The fine folks at Wounded Bird Records have finally given this CD the reissue treatment.
Check out the song “Cowgirl” below. This CD is available for purchase at this link.
Scott Weiland, legendary lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, and Christopher Wicks, designer and owner Rock & Roll Religion, have announced the launch of their much anticipated contemporary men’s collection — Weiland for English Laundry. This inaugural collection will debut at Magic Las Vegas on February 17, 2009.
Christopher Wicks, designer and owner of English Laundry, Fender: The Clothing Collection, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, has teamed with Scott Weiland to create a collection that embodies the iconic style of the fashionable STP front man.
“From early on, I was inspired by rock icons like David Bowie and Keith Richards who helped in molding my personal sense of style,” said Weiland. “I am really looking forward to launching this line with Christopher Wicks and English Laundry.”
“I have the utmost respect for Scott Weiland, both as an artist and as a designer,” said Wicks. “He is truly one of the last great rock stars, and his impact on style and music is undeniable. I am proud to be joining forces with him for this collaboration.”
Weiland for English Laundry is a lifestyle brand for the true rock rebel. The overall concept is derived from the rock decadence of the 1960’s, and inspirations were taken from Savile Row circa 1965 and renowned bands such as The Kinks, Beatles, and Rolling Stones. Eclectic combinations of fabrics, patterns and color have been reformulated to replicate the rich rock culture that defined that era.
The collection boasts a variety of wovens, vests, t-shirts, pants, hats, ties and scarves. All fabrics are based on original vintage patterns circa 1965 through 1979 and have been reproduced for modern-day wear. Pants have a tailored narrow fit with flat fronts, and wovens feature bold chalk stripes, Prince of Wales plaids and tonic two-tone solids.
Retail price points range from $40 – $120 with a targeted distribution to better department and specialty stores. Weiland for English Laundry has successfully combined English Laundry’s famous craftsmanship with Scott Weiland’s infamous flare. Weiland for English Laundry can be found at the English Laundry flagship store (7519 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, California) and at www.globalrebels.com in February of 2009.
If you live in the Midwest like I do, you’re probably pretty freaking sick and tired of the freezing cold and snow.
Imagine if you could get away on a cruise to some place warm and beautiful. Now imagine you’re on a cruise with Lynyrd Skynyrd. I didn’t have to imagine it; I lived it. This was my second year in a row going on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Simple Man Cruise, and it was just as amazing as the the first year. Well…maybe not as amazing because the first year, my fiance proposed to me, but you know what I mean.
There are SO many great highlights from this year’s cruise, but with this post, I just wanted to stick to one thing: Leslie. No, it’s not a girl. Leslie is one of the most amazing bands that I was introduced to on this cruise. Sure, there was Skynyrd and .38 Special and Molly Hatchet and Marshall Tucker, but there were tons of other amazing bands on the cruise as well. Leslie just happened to be one of those kick ass other bands.
Hailing from South Carolina, this trio returned to the Simple Man cruise this year with their dirty, classic rock. I have no f-ing idea how I missed Leslie last year (I totally remember seeing them running around the boat, but I never got a chance to see them live), but boy am I glad I saw them this year! There was quite a buzz about them from the moment I stepped on the boat and got my fruity drink with the umbrella. Everyone was telling me how great they were. These boys also did a fine job of promoting themselves; I’m pretty sure they put flyers on just about every other cabin door on every floor. This year, there was no way anyone was stepping off that boat without knowing who they were. And everyone should know who they are because they are THAT good.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from three long haired, skinny white boys, but what I got was a slap in the face. It’s very rare that I go see a band I’ve never heard of and am actually impressed. Leslie impressed the pants right off of me. They attacked their instruments like freaks and made some incredible music. In my last post, I asked the question, “What rocks?” There is no doubt in my mind that these boys f-ing rock. I don’t know how else to describe their music to you except to tell you that it sounds like they took the basic elements of everything you love about classic rock as you know it and made it dirrrrrty. It doesn’t really sound like anything you’ve heard on the radio, and that’s another thing I love about them. Leslie is fresh but dirty at the same time.
Take a moment and go check out some of their stuff: www.myspace.com/leslierock. If you’re not impressed, then you should probably get your hearing checked. Seriously.

THE ANSWER on the web:
I have listened to bands from all over the globe, but I don’t recall any coming from Austria. In the case of alt rockers Cornerstone, that would be a
first. Their new CD “Head Over Heels” falls somewhere between alternative, and 80’s style AOR. I could easily hear the more alternative numbers getting played in Starbucks across the U.S., as well some alternative and pop radio stations.
Some of the songs such as “Ready to Go” (my personal favorite) have a more melodic hard edge to them, but the majority of the songs here fall closer to acts like The Cranberries or maybe even REM. Singer Anja Schirmer has a very good voice. I wish she would take a few more chances vocally on these songs, but overall she is very pleasing to listen to. Stefan Wachelhofer provides just enough hard edged guitar licks to make these songs palatable to this hard core hard rocker. Michael Wachelhofer, who doubles as the band’s bass and keyboard player, provides a layer of keyboards that enhances but does not overpower Cornerstone’s music.
This CD also comes with a couple of radio edit tracks, “Regret” and “Fade Away” which are shortened versions of the original songs. You can check out “Fade Away” in the links below.
In 2008, Cornerstone signed a deal with Atom Records which could be the big break the band was looking for. They now have their eyes set on the U.S., and “Head Over Heels” ought to open a lot of new doors for the band. Cornerstone was winner of Alternative Addiction’s Next Big Thing contest, and are already getting airplay on several U.S. stations as a result.
If you like what you hear, you can purchase “Head Over Heels” through the HRH storefront at this link.

On Monday, January 19th, Zakk Wylde’s father died peacefully following surgical complications. The following is a statement from Zakk regarding his passing:
My father, Jerome F. Wielandt who served as an inspiration to me and my music throughout my life has passed away. His influence on my life and the life of others has motivated me in ways that have been both unexpected and profound. My father spent his youth as a orphan in New Jersey who was subsequently drafted to serve his country. A World War II veteran, he participated in the events of D-Day at Omaha Beach as well as Normandy. My father meant more than the world to me, and his passing will no doubt influence my direction in life and career as this new year continues to unfold. I am asking fans to allow time for me and my family to grieve in private.
In lieu of flowers, our family would like donations made in Jerome F. Wielandt’s memory to:
DEBORAH HEART AND LUNG CENTER

Lastly, 1919 Eternal was dedicated to dad, and is my legacy to this unique individual I owe nearly everything to. I shall let that album stand the test of time to his greatness.
That Metal Show – VH1 Classic’s new metal-themed 30-minute talk show hosted by Eddie Trunk – will be featuring Boston rockers EXTREME on February 18th. The band are extending a special, complimentary ticket offer to fans. Email email@example.com for more info.
The band’s first studio album in thirteen years, “Saudades de Rock” (pronounced “sow-dodge”) was released in the U.S. on August 12, 2008 on Open E Records and distributed by Fontana. The European version of the CD, which came out on August 1, includes a bonus track, the “Americocaine” demo from 1985, the very first studio recording of the band. The new album sold 6,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 78 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD entered the UK chart at position No. 80.
The iconic rock foursome — vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo — recorded their fifth studio offering at NRG Studios in Los Angeles with Bettencourt at the helm as producer and mixer. “Saudades de Rock” boasts 13 tracks, including the infectious roar of “Star”, the groove-laden, swagger of “King Of The Ladies”, a raw funk rock anthem called “Learn To Love”, and the expressive ballad “Ghost”.
Extreme are planning to continue their Take Us Alive World Tour in support of the new album. Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt recently commented: “It’s not easy coming back after so long. But you gave us a hell of a welcome back party in every city and more importantly an incredible boost of confidence. We couldn’t have gone into The UK and Europe and Asia without the love that you showed for us here at home. Being the first audiences to connect with… you basically had the responsibility to get us to believe in ourselves once again. And we are deeply indebted to you. Our fans. Hopefully we can reconnect with you in the New Year to thank you in person. And once again… we haven’t forgotten about you in Australia, S. America, Canada, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and everywhere else that we will try to reach.”
“That Metal Show” features hosts Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine (“Crank Yankers”, “Inside the NFL”, “Meet The Creeps”) and Don Jamieson (“Inside The NFL”, “Dice Undisputed”, “Meet The Creeps”) discussing the latest rock news, share stories and arguing about their favorite bands. Each week they are joined by special guests who weigh in with their opinions and offer their own unique viewpoints to each episode.
On April 1st, prog-metal legends QUEENSRŸCHE will be premiering their new album, American Soldier, and performing live on the US nationally syndicated radio show Rockline, with host Bob Coburn at 8:30 PM (PT) / 11:30 PM (ET). Fans are encouraged to speak with the band by calling 1-800-344-ROCK (7625). For a station near you and for information regarding how to log onto the Internet for the broadcast go to RocklineRadio.com.
American Soldier – due out due this spring from Rhino/Atco – finds Queensrÿche once again tackling some heavy subject matter, this time focusing on telling the story of war from a firsthand perspective. Singer and chief songwriter Geoff Tate has spent the last few years conducting extensive interviews with veterans and has crafted their thoughts into this epic tale. American Soldier examines American wars from World War II through Iraq from the viewpoint of those in the trenches and on the frontlines.
“Queensrÿche has always had incredible support from members of the Armed Services,” says Tate. “It seems like after every show, I’d end up speaking with a fan that was or had been involved with the military. The more and more I began to hear their accounts and feelings, the more I really felt a conviction to tell their story. Over the last two years, I’ve conducted dozens of one-on-one interviews with veterans of many different American wars. I listened to their amazing and moving recounts and did my best to examine war through their eyes.”

Sister Sins’s new CD, “Switchblade Serenades” came with a huge sticker on the cover that said “Heavy Metal Album of the Year”. That is a pretty strong statement for a new band to make. They better have the tunes to back it up, in order to put something like that on their cover.
Typically I have a tendency to shy away from bands with a female lead singer. Once again another band quickly proves that I need to throw away all of my old notions against female singers.
Sister Sin’s singer Liv has a voice that falls somewhere in between Doro Pesch, Lita Ford and Brett Anderson from The Donnas. I like all of these singers, so I was quickly able to get into Sister Sin’s music.
Sister Sin’s style of sleaze metal sounds like a mixture of old Motley Crue, W.A.S.P., and maybe a dash of 80’s Ozzy Osbourne. What is most important to me is that the music rocks, and “Switchblade Serenades” does just that.
There are a bunch of good heavy rockers on this disc, with “One Out of Ten”, “On Parole” and “Beat the Street” being my current favorites. Sister Sin even pulls off a really cool cover of the Motorhead classic “Make My Day”.
“Switchblade Serenades” didn’t crack my top 15 in 2008, but if I heard this sooner, it probably would have. They are a definitely a band you should look into!

2009 DELIVERS INCREASED INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION
‘…SXSW also has emerged as a great place for international acts to break on U.S. shores…’ BILLBOARD
International participation at SXSW continues to make impressive gains. One fourth of all band applications for 2009 came from abroad and forty percent of the bands invited to perform at SXSW 2009 hail from outside the US. The UK still holds the lead in the number of accepted bands but 2009 shows a surprising surge from Mexico, third behind the UK and Canada with 41 invited bands. Spain ties with Australia for fourth place and an unusually large contingent of Brazilian bands comes in fifth.
An unprecedented seven countries from Latin America will be sending their bands to Austin and registrants will be able to sample music from five African nations. The total number of countries with invited acts stands at 52 as compared with 43 countries represented at SXSW 2008.
Perhaps even more significant than the number of international bands that apply and perform at SXSW, is the number of international business people who continue to flock to Austin. International registration is already up 33% for 2009. Internationals are drawn to SXSW for the unparalleled opportunity to connect with the US music industry as well as with their counterparts in film and interactive.
First-timers bring fresh perspectives and high expectations. Gina Cobbold, Account Manager of the UK on-line lifestyle community Xtaster will be attending SXSW for the first time in 2009. “Over the course of my time working in the music industry, I have always wanted to experience the hub that is SXSW. I expect to see not only music, film and interactive but a huge breeding ground for these industries building new relationships with brands across the board.”
Bruno Oxe of the Brazilian funk rock band Oxe, from the far northeastern region of the country, calls SXSW “…a dream come true…we are certain that SXSW will be the beginning of a new era for Oxe. Hopefully, we’ll return to Brazil with exciting prospects for an international beginning.”
Indie Mobile, a British company that licenses indie label content for mobile, is another new face at SXSW 2009. MD Seth Jackson is looking forward to a productive and exciting trip: “2009 is the year we are really focused on expanding our North American network; taking quality British and European music and delivering via mobile to the US audience. We are hoping to run some cutting edge mobile marketing campaigns at the festival to showcase what can be achieved with the right mix of technology, creative and kick-ass music.”
Berlin and Hamburg are making first-time appearances at SXSW 2009 with showcases, special events and a presence in the Trade Show. The City of Hamburg is sponsoring a series of events with the Reeperbahn Festival, the annual international indie-rock festival that Hamburg hosts each fall. “Hamburg is already established as Germany’s number one music city but there is still a lot to do to put Hamburg on the map internationally. Austin is the go-to place for international attention,” says Johannes Everke, Director of Marketing Services for Hamburg Marketing.
Gabriel Prokoviev, grandson of the classical composer, agrees. He is bringing his London-based Nonclassical project — part record label/part nightclub and live music incubator – to Austin for the first time. “SXSW is THE rock ‘n roll event where musical boundaries are broken, and therefore the most exciting place for us to bring Nonclassical. It will be a chance for people to see that in the right environment classical music can really ‘go off the rails’ and give as good as any band or dj. Plus it will be an opportunity for us to meet many other inspirational international artists and absorb new influences and approaches to 21st century music.”
Whether the boundaries are to be broken or to be bridged, SXSW remains a unique meeting point for global business in music, film and interactive.
Participating countries include: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, Faroe Islands, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, UK, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Venezuela.
SXSW is sponsored by Miller Lite, Independent Film Channel, Fuze Beverage, Sonicbids, ZonePerfect, The MLB Authentic Collection, the Austin Chronicle and Pepsi.
Metal Mind Productions presents re-issues of two albums taken from the discography of Tank – one of the most influential formations which emerged in the beginnings of the N.W.O.B.H.M. madness. The group was formed in Croydon (London, England) in 1980 by Alasdair “Algy” Mackie Ward, an experienced front man who wanted to go beyond his previous musical experiences which included playing in The Saints and The Damned. As the story goes, Algy left The Damned and met brothers Mark and Peter Brabbs. Soon after a new formation was born – a band which would serve a thrilling musical mixture accepted by both punk and metal fans. The name chosen for the group was short and powerful – TANK – it very well suited the band’s ambitions to deliver as much impact as possible. The re-released albums – “War Of Attrition Live 1981” and “Filth Hounds Of Hades” – will be available again in a new digipak edition, digitally remastered using 24-Bit process.
“Filth Hounds of Hades”
Produced by famous “Fast” Eddie Clarke, the debut album hit the stores in Spring of 1982, around the time when Tank participated in the second part of the Motörhead tour, which covered mostly UK dates. “Filth Hounds of Hades” was an extremely successful debut, getting great reviews in the press and a very positive feedback from the fans. New digipak edition includes 7 bonus tracks. “War Of Attrition Live 1981”
Re-release of Tank’s live album recorded in Germany in 1981. New edition includes 10 bonus tracks – demo versions of “Shellshock”, “Run Like Hell” and “Blood, Guts & Beer”, 3 tracks taken from the radio session at Soundsuite Studios, London, England, and 2 live tracks recorded at Parkpop, Holland in 1982. The Who’s new DVD, “At Kilburn 1977” shows me just how great this band was live. The sleeve on this DVD calls this disc the holy grail for The Who fans, and I would have to agree.
I didn’t expect the 30 year old footage to be very good, but I was surprised at the quality of the video and audio of this show. This was the first time I have ever seen the late Keith Moon behind the drum kit. His performance shines on this DVD. Not only is Keith Moon an incredible drummer, but he sings a ton of the back up vocals as well. What an amazing talent this guy was.
The Who is obviously a lot more than just Mr. Moon. I got a kick out of seeing Pete Townshend rocking out on stage with his crazy dancing (with guitar in hand), and I really enjoyed the vocals of Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle.
The video footage on the second DVD is pretty bad quality. The video was shot in December 1969, and sat in The Who vault for years. Even though the video quality is poor, it is still worth watching, just to see The Who in their prime. Having the first recorded live performance of The Who rock opera “Tommy” is worth the price of admission all by itself.
If you are a fan of The Who, this is a must see, must own DVD. If you have never seen The Who before, this DVD will make you a fan! Buy it!
You can purchase this DVD in the HRH Music Store, at this link.

Nikki Sixx has posted a new update from his girlfriend, Kat Von D today.
HIGH VOLTAGE TATTOO – the Book! By Kat Von D Some of you may know I’ve been working on writing my first book for the past year, and I finally got a copy of the final product! It’s so crazy to look through it, and realize that all the hard work has finally become a reality! The book is called, High Voltage Tattoo, and is a window into the world of tattooing through my eyes. I had over a hundred of my clients photographed, and have written personal stories behind each of the tattoos, as well as the Do’s and Don’ts everyone should know about when getting tattooed, Famous Tattoo Myths, an autobiographical section telling you how I got where I am today, How to pick your artist, How to pick your artwork, My Tattooing Playlists, and so much more. In the book, you will also see the tattoos I have done on the likes of Bam Margera, Kerry King of Slayer, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Anthrax, Alkaline Trio, Eagles of Death Metal, Margaret Cho, Jeffree Star, Jamie Thomas, Steel Panther, Fireball Ministry, Nikki Sixx, as well as some of my never before seen final tattoos on my all time fave clients! I am so beyond excited to show you guys the book, because it was by far the most emotional roller coaster of a project that I put my time, energy, blood, sweat and tears into. XOXO, Kat Von D High Voltage Tattoo, By Kat Von D will be available January 20th in bookstores nationwide, as well as on The Official Book Tour launching January 18th.
You can preorder “High Voltage Tattoo” at this link.

TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider will reprise his role as Captain Howdy in the 1998 cult horror classic “Strangeland” when“Strangeland: Disciple” goes into production later this year.
Snider wrote and co-produced the original film in 1994, pre-dating the cinematic vogue for torture film franchises like “Saw” and “Hostel”. “At the time, I really wanted to re-invent the wheel of horror,” Dee says. “Horror, traditionally, plays on people’s fears of being chased and dying. That’s totally played out. When you’re being chased, there’s the chance of escape. When you die, there’s peace. What’s much worse than being chased and dying is being helpless and suffering.”
“Strangeland” is the story of a schizophrenic sexual sadist who lures victims via the Internet, forcing them to submit to ancient tribal rituals. “I came up with the idea of Internet crime before anybody had ever committed Internet crime,” says Snider. “And if I am the father of torture films, I’ve got to come back like a sledgehammer to reclaim my crown!” To that end, “Strangeland: Disciple” will come complete with an NC-17 rating right out of the box. Obviously, Snider ain’t kidding around.“Strangeland: Disciple” promises to be ultra-intense, taking place in the underworld of body modification fetishists, amid the secret sado-masochistic freak societies of perverted pleasures that lurk just underneath the veneer of respectable society.
“Strangeland” was produced in conjunction with The Shooting Gallery, the studio for “Sling Blade” and “Croupier”. Larry Meistrich, formerly ofThe Shooting Gallery, now operates Nehst Pictures and says, “I am very excited to be back in business with Dee Snider again! ‘Strangeland’was a great experience and I know the sequel is going to be better than the original. In these days of various platforms merging, it is great to be able to work with someone like Dee who is so multi-faceted.”
The 1998 soundtrack included an incredible array of bands — SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SEVENDUST, SOULFLY, SLIPKNOT, KID ROCK, COAL CHAMBER, TWISTED SISTER, MEGADETH, MARILYN MANSON and PANTERA — handpicked by Snider. The success of the soundtrack led to a “Strangeland” tour, which Snider hopes to resurrect once again for“Strangeland: Disciple”, in an effort to grace the contours of his demented vision. “Music was intrinsic to me in the first one. We really tried to create the ultimate heavy soundtrack. Music will be important to me again for the sequel,” adds Snider.
Returning for revenge in the sequel is Robert Englund (“Nightmare On Elm Street”‘s Freddie Krueger), who called “Strangeland” a “bona-fide cult hit.” In the original, he played Jackson Roth, one of Captain Howdy‘s victims.
