Helena Cos, vocalist for the Spider Rockets, and Nigel Dupree, leader of the Nigel Dupree Band, will be the special guests on the June 20 edition of Hard Rock Nights.
The Spider Rockets are a female-fronted hard rock outfit hailing from New Jersey. Their self-titled album features a number of in-your-face rockers, including the unofficial first single, “Kiss You Dead.” Helena will speak with JT about the release, upcoming concerts with Jani Lane and Marcy Playground, and plans to shoot a video for “Kiss You Dead” in the near future. More information about the Spider Rockets is available at http://www.spiderrockets.com.
Nigel Dupree is the offspring of Jackyl frontman Jesse James Dupree. The first single from the Nigel Dupree Band’s debut record Attraction is “Rock N’ Roll,” a party rocker if there ever was one. Nigel will speak with JT about the single, growing up with a famous chainsaw-wielding father, and plans to party with Bret Michaels in Cincinnati on July 15. More information about the Nigel Dupree Band is available at http://www.nigeldupreeband.com
Chris Laney is probably best known at as a producer/engineer/songwriter or maybe as the guitarist for Zan Clan or Randy Piper’s Animal but with the release of his solo debut “Pure” he will definitely be making a name for himself as a performer in his own right. “Pure” is filled with catchy, hard driving Swedish rock with a modern twist and a sound that falls somewhere between Gemini Five and Shotgun Messiah with touches of Def Leppard thrown in. It’s not hard to miss that Laney is also heavily influenced by Robert “Mutt” Lange’s production techniques not only with how he makes the record sound like he had an unlimited budget to work with but also when it comes to working with the background vocal arrangements. Huge anthems, straight up rockers, heavy thumping hard driving songs “Pure” has it all and more.
“Situation” kicks everything off and gives you a taste of exactly what is in store for you on “Pure” this is a straight up rocker with some great guitar and background . “I Dunno” has anthem written all over it, huge vocals and background vocals with a sound that is a mix of Def Leppard and Shotgun Messiah that can stand toe to toe with some of the best rock anthems out there. “Make You Cry” reminds me of several bands the aforementioned Shotgun Messiah and Gemini Five with a little Crashdiet thrown in for good measure make this rocker one of the best on “Pure”. Laney gives a chance to catch our breath and slows everything down with “the Stranger In You” until the chorus kicks in that is. He adds a nice touch by adding strings and keyboards to the songs along with some great bass lines provided by Nalle ‘Grizzy’ Pahlsson. “Fire & Ice” is a great melodic rocker with Crashdiet’s Martin Sweet providing the solo on this track and once again some outstanding background vocals. “I Hate Yer Guts” is a hard driving rocker with some Zakk Wyldesque guitar, while “Get U Down” has touches of Def Leppard oozing out all over this song. “Pissed At What Ya Missed” sounds like another nod to Zinny Zan’s ex band this anthem has one of the best solos on the album. In my opinion “Last Man Standing” is the best track on “Pure” it is definitely the catchiest song on the album it reminds me of the “Crazy Nights”/”Hot In The Shade” era of Kiss. The ballad “Skin On Skin” is a definite change of pace compared to the rest of the songs on “Pure” with it piano, soaring chorus and Queen influence.
Fans of modern sounding hard driving hard rock will not be disappointed in “Pure” at all. Laney sounds as if he is looking towards the future but at the same time he also acknowledges the past and the bands that influenced his music. After hearing this album I am eager to hear what else Chris Laney has to offer the rock ‘n roll world both as a producer and a performer.

2009 has ushered in some pretty good new acts to the hard rock scene, and Charm City Devils is definitely one of them. Hard rock veteran John Allen has stepped away from his drum kit to take on the role of lead singer for this Baltimore based rock band.
John Allen wrote all of the songs and played a lot of the music on this disc. His friend and former band mate, Mitch Allan (from SR-71) produced the songs “Best of the Worst” and “Almost Home”.
So what does Charm City Devils sound like? They are a blues based hard rock act that has a sound that shows the influences of bands like AC/DC and Aerosmith and dishes out the swagger of Buckcherry. Does Let’s Rock-N-Roll rock? You bet it does!
CCD’s first single “Let’s Rock-N-Roll (Endless Road)” is one kick ass tune to get this disc started. (See video below) The up tempo rocker, “House of Fire” keeps the pace going nicely. In fact, the pace doesn’t let up until the mid tempo tune, “Best of the Worst”. One word describes this song, massive! This ought to be the second single from this disc.
“True Love (Hell Yeah) is cool stadium anthem that will get everyone throwing their hands in the air!
“Almost Home” is a slower number with heartfelt lyrics depicting a true story by John Allen. If you have ever had a breast cancer scare in your family, you need to hear this. This is a great song.
“Pour Me” is a whiskey soaked rocker that AC/DC wished they wrote.
The album closer, “Burn Baby Burn” is a simple rocking tune, but is extremely catchy and it will stick in your head after a couple of listens. This is a pretty cool way to close out this CD.
This songs on Let’s Rock N-Roll are filled with riff heavy guitar rock that should appeal to most hard rock fans. This is the type of CD that makes you want to crank the stereo knob to ten, and crack open your favorite adult beverage. Let’s Rock-N-Roll will definitely get the party started! Buy it!! You won’t be disappointed.

We just received the following news from AFM Records regarding the band, SHAKRA:
Quite recently, we were informed by Mark about his intention to leave the band by the end of October and we took note of it. Mark feels that some of the contractual agreements between the band and their business environment are too much to his disadvantage.
The remaining four band members however don’t see themselves put in a disadvantage by their business partners. On the contrary, it is not least thanks to the management, booking-agency and record label’s professional contribution that the success of SHAKRA was made possible.
All band members have been able to harvest the fruits of the hard work they’ve done for us in the past years. It is only natural that people around the band earn money for this too. We wish Mark all the best for his private and musical future. It is important for us to let the SHAKRA-Fans know, that we consider our chosen path to be the right one and that we will continue to follow this way with all that lies in our power. After Mark’s departure, we will continue to work together with the same business partners and keep our passion – SHAKRA – burning, with a new singer on our side.

While bands like Twisted Sister and Whitesnake are celebrating the 25th anniversary of some of their hit releases this year, they aren’t the only bands with big anniversaries in 2009. Believe it or not, it has already been 20 years since the release of White Lion’s Big Game. “Big Game” turned the big 2-0 this month.
The songs on “Big Game” hardly need any introduction at all if you are classic hard rock fan. “Little Fighter”, “Cry for Freedom”, “Radar Love” and “Goin’ Home Tonight” have all been released as singles, and have been staples in White Lion’s live sets for years.
White Lion’s cover of Golden Earring’s “Radar Love” has probably gotten more radio air play than the rest of the songs on this disc since its release. While I still prefer the original song, I thought this was a pretty good cover.
Mike Tramp’s vocals on “Big Game” are very good, and Vito Bratta’s guitar work is absolutely incredible. Every time I listen to “Big Game” it makes me wish Bratta would rejoin White Lion, or another band and start playing live again. He is such a talented guitarist, it is a crying shame that we can’t hear him play these songs.
Although some may disagree, I thought there was at least one or two low points on “Big Game”. I didn’t care for the ballad, “Broken Home”. It just didn’t work for me. I tend to skip past this song. I am also not fond of “If My Mind Is Evil”. Bratta’s playing on this tune makes it listenable for me.
Even with a couple of clunkers, there are a bunch of really good songs on “Big Game”. “Dirty Woman” and “Let’s Get Crazy” could have easily been singles. Both of these are really fun tunes. “Baby Be Mine” is quite infectious as well.
Even though this album didn’t top the charts, it is still my second most favorite release from White Lion. (“Fight to Survive” is still my favorite). “Big Game” rocks harder than “Pride”, but not quite as hard as their debut. It is worth picking up, especially if you haven’t checked out White Lion before.

Chickenfoot has released a brand new video, “Oh Yeah”. Their new album was #4 on the Billboard charts this week. Check out the video below!
BIGELF, will be kicking off their North American tour with two headlining shows in Lincoln, NE June 16th, and Kansas City, MO June 17th. From there, BIGELF will join forces with HURT, starting June 18th @ The Rock in Minneapolis.
Bigelf’s latest release, Cheat The Gallows, has been described as an epic blend of Beatles, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath – 30 years behind and 5 years ahead of what’s happening in music today. Bigelf don’t just write music, they create orchestrations; progressive in the sense that they take hard rock into the future – embracing the past and reinterpreting it with a slant for the new millennium.
This fall, Bigelf will join Dream Theater and Opeth throughout Europe on the Progressive Nation tour. Bigelf front man/keyboardist Damon Fox says, “Being added to the Prog Nation tour feels like the planets have aligned for us and the elves have finally come home to Rivendell. The mentality of Dream Theater and Progressive Nation reminds me of a quote from the great Willy Wonka, “There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you’ll be free if you truly wish to be…”
“You must see them at your earliest convenience. Even if it’s not convenient, and you have to get time off work and a babysitter or donate plasma to afford a ticket, just do it. Easily one of the best things Blurt had the pleasure of seeing at SXSW 2009.” BLURT ONLINE (on Bigelf)

TMZ has posted image of Bret Michaels after his near beheading at the Tony Awards. Check out the pictures below.
Bret posted the following at his website today:
BRET MICHAELS OFFICIAL STATEMENT AFTER THE TONYS INCIDENT
I am trying to remain very positive and somewhat humorous about the whole situation. I apologize that I did not make a statement earlier as I have been feeling pretty beat up over the last few days. The fact is I was honored to be asked to perform at the event. The entire “Rock of Ages” production were awesome and even though I was completely out of my element I was really enjoying myself prior to my injury. In fact all involved at the awards show treated me good.
I had a great time at the Tonys right up until I got blindsided, I must admit it was a little blurry after that. In hindsight, there is no doubt I got my bell rung, unfortunately it has been posted and perhaps funny to watch, but I can assure you it has been painful to experience. In all honesty I had absolutely no idea what struck my head. Upon impact I thought a piece of the lighting rig had fallen out of the ceiling and as I fell back it seemed like my head struck the stage and I blacked out for a second. When I opened my eyes I noticed a large set prop coming down straight for me. I immediately pushed myself out of the way and amidst the chaos I laid on the floor and asked “what the hell just happened?”
My nose, mouth and the back of my head felt numb. I vaguely remember asking Big John, “do I have any teeth left in my mouth?” I knew I could move my arms and legs and that was an instant relief. Somebody handed me a towel to wipe the blood from my face and in my dazed state I recall staring at what seemed to be Shrek, a talking goat head and several monkey like creatures.
Over the last few days a lot of speculation as to what happened and who is to blame have surfaced. I need to make clear at no point since the incident occurred do I feel like the accident was malicious in any way and I feel this will all work itself out. However I must state I found it a little strange that the only statement released by the Tony organization was that I missed my mark and that I was completely fine. First, I thought, “what mark?” as there was no official mark, just a retracting drum riser and an overhead prop being rapidly lowered which was out of my view. Second, I think it was slightly irresponsible for them to report that I was fine without full knowledge of my condition, when a doctor hadn’t even looked at me yet and I surely don’t remember any X-Ray machines backstage. I am not looking for an apology, I only hoped that on a human level that the Tony organizations’ representative would have expressed some concern for injury in their statement or at the very least claim they would be looking into the matter.
Whether it was a miscommunication, missed cue or missed mark no matter what the situation was the prop should have been stopped or at least slowed for a few more seconds until I cleared the stage. I apparently had less than two seconds to avoid being hit. It was evident I was backing up and moving in the direction to exit the stage for at least 30 to 40 feet and it is plain to see I had no clue this prop was descending. For God sake, they have at least a five second delay to prevent the airing of unapproved expletives and nudity!
For the record never at any point during my Sunday morning rehearsal was I ever instructed that the piece was coming down and that I had very little time to get off the stage, otherwise believe me I would have stopped or at least ducked so as not to be knocked out at the Tonys. Trust me I never wanted any of this to happen. I was simply doing as I was told which was to exit the stage as Poison’s song “Nothin’ but a Good Time” came to a close.
I feel for the actors and actresses who put in so much time and hard work on or off Broadway to get to the Tonys. This is their moment and I am sorry that some of it may have gotten overshadowed by my thick rocker cranium being struck by a stage prop. On a high note I hear it was the highest rated Tonys they have had in years. However, I was bummed that I did not get to see any of the acts perform during the Tonys as I have never seen a play on Broadway before, probably would have enjoyed it, and even more bummed that I did not get to attend the after parties, cuz rumor has it Anne Hathaway was going to be there and she is hot.
I would like to personally thank Bobby and C.C., Mark Hogue, Larry Morand and my crew along with Liza Minnelli, Mark Indelicato and Carole Propp for rushing to my dressing room to check on my condition. In closing I truly appreciate everyone’s concern. I thank the Good Lord I have a thick skull and I have a feeling this may have been my first and final curtain call at the Tonys.

The decadent autobiography of HANOI ROCKS co-founder Andy McCoy, “Sheriff McCoy: Legend of Hanoi Rocks”, will soon be available in English for the first time in a deluxe hardcover edition through North American publisher Bazillion Points. Pre-orders are being taken now for books shipping on July 31.
Touted as “the last great rock ‘n’ roll memoir,” McCoy’s autobiography covers the legendary guitarist’s life and exploits from childhood through the early 2000s rekindling of HANOI ROCKS. Growing up in Sweden and Finland, McCoy helped introduce punk to Finland with his teenaged band Briard before befriending glamorous Michael Monroe and forming HANOI ROCKS. Based in a Stockholm subway station, the band embarked on wild life-changing and death-defying thrill ride around the world, touring not just Europe, London, and America, but also Israel, Brazil, Thailand, and Japan. After HANOI ROCKS dissolved following the death of drummer Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley in Hollywood in December 1984, McCoy carried on with SUICIDE TWINS, CHERRY BOMBZ, a successful solo career, and a stint as a sideman to IGGY POP.
A national icon in his native Finland, McCoy has been called the Finnish Keith Richards — except Richards only fell out of a coconut tree; Andy McCoy fell from a fourth-story balcony and lived to tell the tale. His over-the-top image and streetwise bending of punk, glam, and old-fashioned rock n’ roll inspired a generation of platinum-selling bands—rock authors Slash of GUNS N’ ROSES and Nikki Sixx of MOTLEY CRUE have already admitted their musical and stylistic debts. Now the real McCoy speaks from the heart on subjects including rock stardom, true love, his arsenal of vintage guitars, and surviving every imaginable variety of intoxication.
According to McCoy: “This book is entertainment for entertainment’s sake, for lovers of rock ‘n’ roll history and people who have a taste for the macabre.”
The 204pp hardcover English edition of “Sheriff McCoy: Legend of Hanoi Rocks” by Andy McCoy from Bazillion Points includes dozens of rare candid photos, a deluxe embossed cover, a lengthy select discography spanning three decades of rarities, and a new 2009 preface written by McCoy after the final breakup of HANOI ROCKS.

Little Steven Van Zandt adds another imprint to his rock and roll adventures with the launch of Lost Cathedral. The new label will focus on hard rock releases and will debut with the latest offering from internationally acclaimed rock band Crown of Thorns titled Faith in stores June 9. The disc marks Crown of Thorns’ first domestic release in the United States ever in the band’s career.
“Wicked Cool was formed as a Garage Rock label – traditional Rock and Roll – so when people see Wicked Cool they know what kind of music to expect,” explains Little Steven Van Zandt. “Hard Rock is Garage Rock’s first cousin having come directly from the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, and the Who and we’ve been getting a lot of harder stuff sent to us lately, a lot of it quite good. With the opportunity to release the legendary Crown of Thorns new record, we decided it’s time for a new label.”
Lost Cathedral takes music fans out of the garage and into the arena where musicianship and bigger production is king. Lost Cathedral will be run by the same executive team responsible for sister label Wicked Cool Records led by Chairman and Founder Steven Van Zandt of HBO’s “The Sopranos” and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band fame; Jean Beauvoir, CEO, Renegade Nation; John Luongo, Label Manager; and Scott Hueston, VP Sales & Marketing.
Beauvoir does double duty not only as a label executive but as a creative force as singer/songwriter/producer of Crown of Thorns’ new release Faith. The disc brings back the trademark Crown of Thorns sound that established the band as a rock powerhouse, still keeping intact all the elements of infectious guitar riffs, soaring hooklines, and great melodies. Beauvoir collaborated with Bob Clearmountain (Bryan Adams, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band) in the recording sessions for Faith as well as Mark Plati (David Bowie) for the mix — resulting in the best sounding Crown of Thorns album yet.

June 17th NYC Show info
Stevie Van Zandt celebrates the launch of his new imprint Lost Cathedral and the label’s first release from internationally acclaimed rock band Crown of Thorns with a special NYC event on Wednesday, June 17 at St. Paul The Apostle Church. “Stevie Van Zandt’s Lost Cathedral Presents Crown of Thorns Live” features the band performing songs from their album FAITH out June 9.
Fans can only win tickets to the VIP event via the Crown of Thorns Facebook fan page, myspace.com/crownofthorns, or by entering to win at email@example.com.
Crown of Thorns FAITH is a solid collection of rock tunes that brings back the trademark sound that established the band as a global force to be reckoned with and keeps intact all the elements of infectious guitar riffs, soaring hooklines, and great melodies. All songs on FAITH were written and produced by frontman Jean Beauvoir except “Rock Ready” which he co-wrote with bassist Michael Paige, “Living In The Shadows” co-written with guitarist Tommy Lafferty, and “Motorcycle Loretta,” a featured bonus track co-written with Steven Van Zandt. The CD’s mystical undertones are culled from Beauvoir’s voodoo heritage. His Uncle is internationally renowned Voodoo Priest Max Beauvoir, the inspiration behind the film and subject of the book “The Serpent and The Rainbow.” (Wade Davis and Wes Craven).
“Over the years I’ve incorporated elements of Voodoo spirituality in my music. With FAITH I tapped into my heritage and brought the symbolism and meaning behind Voodoo into the forefront both in image and feeling. I wanted fans to experience the energy and electricity through the music,” explains Jean.
Adds Stevie Van Zandt: “This event will showcase the band’s rockin’ live show. Crown of Thorns’ style comes out of the ’70’s and ’80’s Classic Melodic Hard Rock genre but Jean’s voice is more versatile than most and has to be because his songwriting covers a wider range than the genre can hold. From his most intimate whispered vignettes filled with personal torment, to his vast epic sci-fi post apocalyptic movie vistas, his songs capture you and transport you to another time and place. And the band is great enough to communicate the magic and majesty of every emotional nuance.”
Former Accept front man, Udo Dirkschneider is back with a brand new 5 song EP, for metal heads to feast their ears on. And if you want to become infected with the metal goodness, you have to act fast as this EP will be limited to 2222 pieces worldwide.
How does this EP sound? Imagine the classic metal of Accept performed today! If you are a fan of classic Accept, you are going to love this. This EP is full of heavy guitars, and awesome screaming vocals that Udo Dirkschneider has been known for. “Infected” works as a great appetizer for U.D.O’s new CD, “Dominator” which is scheduled for an August release.
The two songs “Platchet Soldat” and Poezd Po Rossii” are both in German and sound like they came right out of a German bier hall. Some may frown upon this, but I think it sounds really good. I don’t mind hearing Udo sing in his native language.
My only complaint is that I have wait two more months to hear the new disc. “Infected” will definitely hold me over until then.
