ADDITIONAL U.S. AND CANADIAN SHOWS ADDED TO THE CONCERT EVENT OF THE SUMMER

The hottest rock tour of the summer has just gotten hotter. Fifteen additional concerts, including seven in Canada, have been added to the critically hailed tour of the summer starring British rock legends Def Leppard, special guests Cheap Trick and Man Raze. Tickets in select markets go on sale beginning September 25th at LiveNation.com. Additional dates to be announced soon.

“We are really amazed by how well the tour has been received,” said Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott. “Our fans have been absolutely fantastic. There’s really no greater compliment than to be asked to keep on doing it so that’s what we’re going to do.”

The tour’s third leg will kick off in Reno, Nevada on Thursday, October 22nd. It highlights three decades of music from one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest bands. With combined sales of 80 Million albums worldwide, 65 million from Leppard alone, fans will be treated to hits like “Photograph,” “Rock Of Ages,” “C’mon C’mon,” “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Foolin’,” “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak,” “Nine Lives,” as well as Cheap Trick classics “I Want You To Want Me” and “Surrender.”

The tour has played to massive crowds throughout the summer. Celebrity guests, some of which include Taylor Swift, Larry Mullen, Jr. Of U2, and Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, along with a wide range of fans of all ages have come to see the mega hit-filled show. Def Leppard also launched the first interactive tour in history via Rockzimity, a Bluetooth and Wifi exclusive.

Def Leppard (Joe Elliott/vocals, Vivian Campbell/guitar, Phil Collen/guitar, Rick “Sav” Savage/bass and Rick Allen/drums) sits at the top of an iconic class of rock ‘n’ roll bands. In fact, they are one of a handful of select groups, including the likes of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd and The Eagles, who have been awarded the R.I.A.A.’s prestigious Diamond Award more than once (Pyromania and Hysteria). The band’s most recent album Songs From The Sparkle Lounge debuted last year at #5 on the Billboard Top 200. They’ve also sold out the 02 in Dublin AND headlined Britain’s Download Festival 2009 to more then 80,000. Over the course of their career, Def Leppard has produced a series of classic groundbreaking albums that set the sound for generations of music fans and artists. The group’s spectacular live shows, filled with powerful melodic rock anthems, have become synonymous with their name and are an institution in the touring industry as they continue to sell out arenas worldwide.

With more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks and 40 gold and platinum-recording awards, Cheap Trick may be one of the most covered bands of all time. Since the 70s they’ve been blending elements of pop, punk and even metal in a way that is instantly catchy and recognizable.

Cheap Trick’s acclaimed new album, The Latest, continues their reign as power-pop progenitors as they celebrate their 35th anniversary together. Since forming in the city of Rockford, IL in 1974, they have sold over 20 million albums and had numerous hits including “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me” and “Dream Police.” Cheap Trick features the original line-up of Robin Zander – vocals and guitar, Rick Nielsen – guitar and backing vocals, Bun E. Carlos – drums and backing vocals & Tom Petersson – bass and backing vocals.

Live Nation will produce the tour nationally. Additional ticket and tour information is available at LiveNation.com.

0 Howard Leese – Secret Weapon (2009)

  • September 22, 2009
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · CD Reviews A-H · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

HOWARD LEESE COVERMost people know Howard Leese from his days with Heart, but what a lot of fans don’t realize is that he has a deep and rich career that extends beyond that. This summer, Leese released his first solo album, Secret Weapon on Frontiers Records. With guest stars galore, this album showed promise for fans of rock music.

Secret Weapon opens with the strong “Alive Again”, an acoustic/electric blend with Joe Lynn Turner (Yngwie Malsteen, Rainbow) handling the vocals. A slow build up starts the song off with the anticipation that something magical is about to happen. “Alive Again” has a great southern rock feel to it that seems to capture the essence of the Deep South in the form of music.

“Heal The Broken Hearted” comes up next with guest vocals from Paul Rodgers. This is the best Bad Company song I’ve heard in years. I realize that Howard was not in Bad Company, but he did play live with Paul Rodgers, and this song reminds me so much of Bad Company that it had me yearning for a reunion with Howard on lead guitar. With a classic Bad Company sound and groove, “Heal The Broken Hearted” is a great track and is in contention for best on the album.

“Hot To Cold” has a strong, mesmerizing blues beat to it and feels like it would be right at home on the Chicago strip of blues clubs. With guest vocals from Deanna Johnston and Joe Lynn Turner leading the way, “Hot To Cold” is a nice blues song with solid rhythm and a steady beat. Leese shows off his guitar skills with strong leads and a great solo in the middle of the track. A longer solo would have made this the best song on the disc, which is a testament to Leese’s ability with the axe in his hand.

“Rada’s Theme” is a mellow acoustic/electric instrumental that has a relaxing motif to it. This song shows a new direction for Leese, with a beautiful saxophone harmony washing over the acoustic and electric guitar strings. Blending synthesizer, saxophone, and guitar seamlessly, Rada’s Theme would fit nicely on any movie score, especially a romance film.

The instrumentals (and there are several) on the disc are a different style than expected from a rock guitarist. While touching on jazz and blues influences, there is a strong classical style on all of the instrumental melodies. Leese combined his guitar work with strings, piano, wind instruments, and light percussion to create the classical sound that was a nice surprise, but may turn off some fans. If you’re seeking a hard rock record from top to bottom, Secret Weapon does not deliver that. It does provide a nice blend of different styles that make for a decent album.

The biggest problem with Secret Weapon is how all of the songs (especially the instrumentals) sound eerily similar to one another. At certain points in the disc, it was hard to know where one song ended and the next began. While the compositions are pretty, there is a lack of definition in most tracks. It appears as if the instrumentals are still trying to find their voice (no pun intended).

Overall Secret Weapon is a decent solo album from a great guitarist. While not the rip roaring rock record that was expected, one should applaud Howard Leese for trying new styles and showing off his different tastes in music. Blending classical, blues, jazz, and rock, Secret Weapon is a solid disc for fans looking to move beyond just rock and roll. For those that are seeking just the rock, download “Alive Again” and “Heal The Broken Hearted”.

1 BLACKBERRY SMOKE SET TO RELEASE LITTLE PIECE OF DIXIE

  • September 21, 2009
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

Blackberry Smoke

Blackberry Smoke will be releasing their album, Little Piece of Dixie, through BamaJam Records on September 29, 2009. Little Piece of Dixie is true to Blackberry Smoke style and is a great mix of southern rock, bluegrass and country. Acclaimed producer Dann Huff (Bon Jovi, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts) agreed to produce Blackberry Smoke’s second album after coming to see the band live. “We were excited because we knew what a great musician Dann is,” says Charlie Starr. “He said, ‘I love what you guys do and it’ll be great when we go into the studio that I don’t have to bring in studio musicians to play on it.”

True to his word, Huff encouraged the band to bring their road show into the studio. “We did not use any gear that we don’t have on our trailer, except for a 12-string acoustic,” remembers Charlie.

“Dann’s impressive in every aspect,” Charlie says of Huff. “He’s such a great musician and producer, with great ideas and great ears, and he has such a love for music. If we were arguing with one another, he would always help us find a middle ground.”

The result is Little Piece Of Dixie, a fresh yet familiar collection that fuses Blackberry Smoke’s diverse influences with its road-honed musicianship. The band, which pens most of its own songs, is also astute enough to realize that a great tune can come from outside its four walls. “Everybody should tip their hat to Hank Williams as the greatest songwriter that ever was,” Charlie says.

To that end, the album is a complementary mix of songs written by the band and some of Nashville’s top songwriters, including Lee Roy Parnell, David Lee Murphy, Gary Nicholson, Craig Wiseman, Randy Houser and Rob Hatch.

Over the years, the band has been known for sharing the stage with acts like ZZ Top, Montromgery Gentry, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band and Cross Canadian Ragweed.

VAI was Keynote Speaker For The Graduating Class 2009

Musicians Institute awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree to legendary rock guitarist, recording artist, producer, and composer Steve Vai. The award was officially conferred during MI’s summer graduation ceremony held on September 18 at LA’s Wiltern Theatre.

After first achieving prominence as guitarist for the late Frank Zappa, Vai has gone on to win multiple Grammys, repeatedly top critics’ and readers’ polls, and earn gold and platinum records while becoming the personification of contemporary guitar virtuosity. His latest concert DVD, Where the Wild Things Are, is set for release September 29th on Favored Nations.

Describing why MI selected Vai for the honor (only the second awarded in the school’s history), Vice President of Education Beth Marlis said, “Steve Vai has not only inspired countless musicians around the world and played a major role in the evolution of modern rock guitar, he also embodies MI’s ideal of the artist-educator who combines relentless pursuit of his creative vision with a sense of responsibility for mentoring the next generation.”

6 Bulletboys – 10c Billionaire (2009)

  • September 21, 2009
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · CD Reviews A-H · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

BulletBoys10cBillionaire It has been six long years since the Bulletboys last release “Sophie”. There is only one original member of this band left, with singer and guitarist Marq Torien. With that being said, you can expect some changes to the Bulletboys sound.

I first heard the track “Road To Nowhere” in an Eddie Trunk Interview in 2008, so I knew this would be a different sounding record, but I wasn’t sure how much. I wasn’t initially impressed with this song, and didn’t expect much from 10c Billionaire. I have been a long time fan of the band, so I bought the CD any way.

The opening cut “Asteroid” is a heavy cut that has a very modern hard rock feel.  This is a completely different sound for the Bulletboys.  This song would not be out of place on FM rock radio at all. Once the surprise wore off with how different this was, I have grown to like this song a lot.

“Born To Breed” has some monster guitar riffs that sound like the band stole a page out of Slash’s handbook. This song has this rocking sleazy feel that is not unlike Guns N’ Roses.  If Marq Torien ever wanted a new job, he should take a look at the singerless Velvet Relvolver.  This song should makes that type of statement. Color me impressed!

“Bringing Home The Gun” sounds a lot like a Shinedown track, and I am ok with that. I love Shinedown, and the Bulletboys bring it on this tune!

Wow! Another song with a familiar feel is “Jenna Star”.  The funny thing is, this sounds like a Foo Fighters song with different vocals.

I am guessing that the version of “Road To Nowhere” on 10c Billionaire is a little more polished than the one that I heard over a year ago.  I like this version a lot more.

The hair metal era of the Bulletboys is gone. I loved the early hits by this band, and surprisingly I like this new album a lot. It took a few listens before I completely appreciated what is happening on this disc.  Marq Torien and company have delivered a surprisingly relevant album for today’s rock audience.  Old fans of the band might be shocked by their new sound, but I think if you give 10c Billionaire a chance, you will be pleasantly surprised.  Not all of the songs work, but there are some solid tunes worth exploring on 10c Billionaire.

It has already been over a year and a half since Airbourne released their awesome debut record, Runnin’ Wild.  The boys are hard at work in Chicago, Illinois recording disc #2.  I would guess with the lack of news that it will be slated for a 2010 release.

The following clips were released in support of Runnin’ Wild. There also a couple of live clips from their show at Wacken Open Air Festival in 2008.  If you haven’t purchased this CD, you can grab a copy here! It is worth the money spent!

If you would like to own these videos, you can buy the special edition of Runnin’ Wild from the Hard Rock Hideout Music Store here. The DVD is in PAL format, so you will need a DVD player that can handle this format, but it will work in most computer drives.

3 Cockpit Rocks With Hard Rock Hideout

zoom_022w

What do you get when you take four hot, wild, crazy ladies, thrown in some influences of Kiss, AC/DC, Motorhead, and Judas Priest, mix it up with some great songwriting and playing? Your answer would be L.A.’s Cockpit.  If you think Cockpit is just another girl band you really need to pull your head out of the sand because these ladies are on a “Mission To Rock”, kicking ass and taking names along the way.

Skin basher Rachael Rine recently took the time to talk with Hard Rock Hideout about all things Cockpit.

HRH: For the readers that may not be familiar with Cockpit, who makes up the band?

Rachael Rine: Rachael Rine here and I beat the hell out of the drums for you.  Alicia Blu is our shredding lead guitarist.  Linda Lou is on pipes and rhythm guitar.  Terrii Kiing is our wicked bass player holding down the low end.

HRH: Cockpit has been together since late 2003, how did the band get started?

Rachael Rine: I wasn’t finding any projects in Hollywood that I could really sink my teeth into.  So I started rolling through girls as a cover band to see who fit.  Linda moved here from Philly to join me and we immediately started writing songs.  Shortly there after we found Terry on Craigslist.  Over the next few years we went through a dozen lead guitarists who weren’t a perfect fit until we met our match…Alicia Blu.  It was like playing with a kick ass muscle car in your garage for a few years and finally finding the ignition key.  Time to let the machine out of its cage!

HRH: Judas Priest, Motorhead, Kiss, AC/DC are all influences of Cockpit, what are some   other influences of the band?

Rachael Rine: We are highly influenced by fists pounding in the air in unison, screaming fans, and cruising down the freeway with the pedal to the metal.  While at top speed you might catch us listening to Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Slade or the Stones.  We just like good rock n’roll all eras all speeds.

HRH: You have a kick ass E.P. available right now called “Mission To Rock” , but for the people that are hard up for Cockpit when might we see a full album?

Rachael Rine: We are currently stowed away at a secret location writing and getting ready to record some new tunes.  I’m not sure when it will be done.  There might be some touring in between recording sessions.  Once we have an idea as to when it will be released you will definitely hear from us!

HRH: Four ladies in a band…Do you have a hard time with people taking Cockpit seriously, especially being in a hard rock band?

Rachael Rine: It’s really not a problem for us.  We are a far cry from a lot of the all girl novelty acts that are out there.  Sometimes people are skeptical, but once they hear the tunes and see us play it’s pretty obvious we are a real rock band.  Just like the boys, but we smell better on tour.  People come out of curiosity and go home singing our songs, wearing our T-shirt, and telling all their friends about their new favorite band.

HRH: How long does it usually take to make people believers?

Rachael Rine: I’m not really sure, I’d guess one chorus?  I do know that every show we play, we pick up a ton of new fans.  The bottom line is that Cockpit fans are the best in the land!  We love you all to pieces!

HRH: Every time I get a tweet or a message from you four, it seems like you’re in Hollywood raising hell on Sunset Strip.  Everyone has heard the stories of Sunset back in the 80’s, but what is the music scene like there now?

Rachael Rine: We were wee babies in the ‘80s so we can’t really compare our experience to that.  The strip definitely still has its moments.  Wherever we are whether it’s Hollywood or Mankato, we make sure we are having a blast.  Everyone around us is always invited to join in.  If you’re going to buy the ticket, you may as well enjoy the ride!

HRH: What are some bands from L.A. you think we should be keeping our ears open for?

Rachael Rine: Cockpit haha!  No one immediately comes to mind that you already don’t know about from LA.  However, you should check out The Last Vegas from Chicago.  We toured with them recently and let me tell you, those boys put on one hell of a rock ‘n’ roll show night after night.

HRH: Cockpit has the chance to open for any band active today, but only one. Who would the four of you pick?

Rachael Rine: That’s a tough one.  There are so many bands we all love and would sound great with.  We’ve also been lucky enough to play with a lot of our idols already.  If forced to choose, and if they keep it together, I’d have to say Aerosmith.  It’s kind of a rite of passage thing. So many great bands learned the ropes from Aerosmith or Ozzy.

HRH: So you got to tell us where we can find Cockpit online?

Rachael Rine:

www.ilovecockpit.com

www.myspace.com/cockpit

www.facebook.com/cockpitrocks

www.twitter.com/cockpitrocks

www.reverbnation.com/cockpitrocks

Bonus Question: Do you think Cockpit would make a good house band at Fangtasia?

Rachael Rine: Funny you should ask, we’ve headlined there a couple times!  It’s filmed at a bar here in California that we have blown the roof off of.  However, “Cockpit- The house band at Fangtasia” has a nice ring to it.  I hope the Vamps could handle us!!  They’d have their hands full!  So, when do we start?
