Due to unforeseen personal matters, the third leg of Def Leppard’s North American Tour, set to begin on October 22nd with special guest Cheap Trick, has been cancelled. “We know how truly blessed we are to have such committed fans,” said the band in a statement. “That’s why we’ve agonized over this decision. Even if just a single concert, we don’t take cancelling shows lightly, but unfortunately life’s commitments need to be the priority.”

With all of the hoopla over Lita Ford’s new CD, Wicked Wonderland, I wanted to step back and check out her husband’s solo debut from 1987, Proud To Be Loud.
This CD features the talent of Michael Angelo Batio on guitar. If you have ever heard this guy play, then you know his skill falls somewhere between Vinnie Vincent and Yngwie Malmsteen. He is an impressive shredder, who can play at a ridiculous speed. On Proud To Be Loud sometimes his style of playing works and sometimes it doesn’t.
I would never consider Jim Gillette a great vocalist. He does have an impressive range, and can hit some notes that most singers would never try for. In fact, the only thing higher than the notes coming out of his mouth, is his hair. His lower range where most of his vocals fall is similar to, but not as good as Mark Slaughter. Overall, his voice takes some getting used to, and you will either love it, or hate it. Personally, I am not a fan, so I struggle with his vocals.
There are a couple songs on this CD that I did like, but not much more. On the song, “When the Clock Strikes 12” Gillette really belts the notes out. Michael Angelo Batio’s playing is top notch as well. The band slows things down somewhat for the song “Angel in White”. This isn’t what I would consider a power ballad, but probably the closest thing you will find to a hit on this CD.
If you grab the 2003 reissue of this CD, you will find 5 bonus tracks, some of which come from Gillette’s bands Nitro, and Organ Donor. The Organ Donor songs show Gillette singing in a lower tone that is very similar to his range on Lita Ford’s new CD. It is more of an alternative metal sound, which I could live without. For more information on that group, check out www.myspace.com/organdonorfresno. The bonus tracks don’t really add anything to the CD, but if you must have it, at least you get to check out a few more tunes.
Overall, I can’t recommend Proud to Be Loud. Batio’s playing would probably be the only true reason to grab this disc. As a whole, the majority of the songs on this disc make my head hurt.
This CD is now out of print once more, but you can find copies of it on Ebay from time to time. Tread at your own risk!

Vains of Jenna has released a new video, ” Get It On”, in support of their new release, The Art of Telling Lies.
Eonian Records have found another gem with their retro-release of Shake City’s self titled effort. 80’s Sunset Strip rock at its best is what Shake City has to offer, if this album reminds you a little of Warrant or Black ‘N Blue, it could be because vocalist Adam Shore was Warrant’s singer before the train wreck known as Jani Lane came along, or it could be because Erik Turner, Tommy Thayer, and even Lane himself helped pen some of the tunes on this album. Turner and Thayer also lent a hand in the studio producing the album along with Pat Regan. Without a doubt, Shake City is the best release from Eonian so far.
“One Good Reason” is a sleazy opener with some catchy background vocals and chorus. Guitarist Don E. Sachs lays down a very nice solo that I’m sure had all the girls on Sunset stripping off their clothes and throwing them on-stage back in the day. If I didn’t know any better I would think “Hot Love” was a long lost Black ‘N Blue track, even though I think Shore is a better fit than Jamie St. James on this song. This head bobbing, foot tapping treat would’ve garnered Shake City a massive amount of airplay on Headbanger’s Ball, while also adding to the band’s female underwear collection. Another track that has Black ‘N Blue written all over it is “Betty Blu” and while, the band as a whole sound as tight as a drum the guitar tandem of Don E. Sachs and Michael Blair really shine. “Get It While It’s Hot” is a slow, bluesy, sleaze filled song perfect for the strip clubs, reminds me a little of Sweet F.A. “Submarine” is a sex fueled barn burner with more cool guitar from Sachs & Blair, “Little Lianne” is a classic 80’s power ballad that other bands made platinum albums off of. “Lust & Love” takes us back to sleaze with some nice bass from Ray Bailey and more great background gang vocals. “Psychedelic Ride” may sound familiar to some listeners as it also appeared on Eric Turner’s “Demos For Diehards” and it played almost note for note on that album as it is this one, still a very catchy tune though. “Sweet Dreams” is an acoustic based number with a heavy Beatles influence. Another song that will sound familiar to fans is “Game of War”, which appeared on Warrant’s remastered version of Cherry Pie, but in all honesty Adam Shore’s vocals on this song leaves the Jani Lane version wanting, and wanting very badly. “Game of War” is definitely one of the best tracks on “Shake City”.
There are quite a few bands that could’ve been big back in the day, but judging from the songs on this album Shake City is one of the few bands that should’ve been not just big, but huge. Unfortunately, even with Eric Turner and Tommy Thayer’s help, it didn’t happen and that is just a damn shame.

Not one, nor two, but three discs come with the new Foreigner album and it’s an impressive look ahead at a band with “No End In Sight” (good) and a chance to get into a live performance featuring the stirring new and current lineup. New may actually be a misnomer at this point as vocalist Kelly Hansen has been with Foreigner for four years now. If you’ve seen the band during that time you’re no doubt aware that this is the best they have ever sounded. Hansen brings a vitality and energy to the group that seems to have awakened everyone else, specifically Mick Jones, Mr. Foreigner himself. Somehow in this new configuration Jones has become a legitimate shredder on guitar. Somehow his virtuosity got buried in the “serve the song” style the band employed for most of its early years. Fact is, Mick kicks ass. Born in the same general area, within a couple of miles from each other in England, in the essentially same time period, the mid-forties, amazingly are Jones, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. The odds of that happening are akin to having a health care deal everyone likes by COB tomorrow. But where Page, Beck and Clapton (not in any particular order) went on to superstardom in their own individual ways, influencing thousands of players in the years to come, Jones became a session player and then moved to France as a member of Johnny Hallyday, that country’s Elvis. Hey, Jones was twenty years old, driving a Porsche and living in Paris with all the responsibility of a teenager with an open credit card. Things came quickly and seductively and Mick was golden…for awhile. But what he needed was a band, a really good rock band. He joined Spooky Tooth, a legit band, but with little recognition. It was in 1976 when he assembled a band of superior talent, three Brits and three Yanks…how about Foreigner? Three of us always will be, no matter where we are. But we feel the world didn’t know of the true talent which lay within until just recently.
Foreigner can be accessed at ForeignerOnLine.com where you can get a taste of what some of the new songs sound like, the album is available, but we’ll dive in and let you check it out if you haven’t had a chance on your own. The third disc is a re-mix album worthy of some attention as you’ll notice the lead vocals have a delightfully different timber. Nice, Kelly. The band continues to develop and grow, but with Jeff Pilson and Thom Gimble on hand there’s long term continuity and musical wizardry with this particular band. Then there’s a completely new album featuring a new songwriting team and a different direction. The album was produced by Marti Frederiksen and Mick’s stepson Mark Ronson, a tremendous vote of confidence for them as Mick has produced the likes of Van Halen and Billy Joel. The DVD of a live show which is included serves as a wakeup call. It’s the real Mick Jones absolutely cementing his rightful place in the pantheon of great Rock guitarists. Don’t believe us? Check out “Juke Box Hero” as it segues into “Whole Lotta Love”. Or “Urgent”. What a treat it is to see him really let go.
Talk about a nice package, this is a compelling release by band at a peak period in their storied career. Join us for Mick Jones and Kelly Hansen on the next ROCKLINE!
AFI has just released a re-edited, higher quality, version of the visually intriguing video for “Medicate.” The Paul Minor directed video which was shot in black, white and a hint of gold captures the first predominantly performance video from the Bay area quartet. The video also showcases Jade Puget’s guitar solo which has been described by lead singer Davey Havok as, “not only my favorite moment in ‘Medicate’… but one of my favorite moments on the record.”
“Medicate” is the first single from AFI’s new album, Crash Love, and is also included on the new Guitar Hero 5 game. Crash Love hit stores last week and is available in stores and through iTunes. For all the latest news from AFI visit www.afireinside.net
Overkill’s second live album was released on June 18th, 2002. Recorded during the band’s performance at The Paramount in Asbury Park, New Jersey on March 22nd, 2002, this offering delivers over 70 minutes of pure thrash metal annihilation by the living legend of the genre. The 13 tracks included on the CD feature one of the most amazing productions in the history of live albums. The sound quality is easily comparable to studio albums, but the immerse amount of energy makes this release even better, reflecting the true nature of Overkill’s music. The track list has been prepared very carefully – none of the songs is repeated from the band’s first live effort, “Wrecking Your Neck” from 1995. Overkill made sure that the choice of material satisfies both new and old fans. The newer albums (“Bloodletting”, “Necroshine”, “From The Underground and Below”, “The Killing Kind”) are represented by such tracks as “Thunderhead”, “Necroshine”, “It Lives” and “Battle”, while the pre-1990’s Overkill classics include “E.vil N.ever D.ies”, “The Years of Decay”, “Shred”, “Deny The Cross” and the all-time fan favorite – “Overkill” from the band’s debut album. Complete with top notch production and a perfectly balanced content, “Wrecking Everything” can easily be put right next to Judas Priest, Slayer and Motörhead in the list of amazing live albums. A true feast for any fan of thrash metal!
Overkill’s thirteenth studio effort, was released on March 25th, 2003. The album was considered by many fans the most thrash oriented offering since “Horrorscope”. Consisting of 10 merciless tracks, “Killbox 13” starts off with a typical Overkill opener – the fast and furious “Devil By The Tail”. The thrash metal cascade is continued with “Struck Down” and “I Rise”, both of which sounding like taken from “The Years of Decay” album. The band introduces some groove-thrash patterns in such songs as “The One” and “No Lights”, while “Crystal Clear” stands out as a musical mixture between Machine Head and Crowbar. “Until I Die” starts off like a ballad, only to crush the listener near the third minute with a powerful thrash metal riff. Bobby “Blitz” as always delivers great vocals throughout the entire album, showing his best at “Damned” with some impressive screaming patterns. The lyrics on “Killbox 13” form a semi-concept, revolving around the Seven Deadly Sins. But it’s up to the listener to determine which song covers which sin… With “Killbox 13” Overkill managed to find a perfect compromise between their “new” style of playing and the classic material from the 1980’s. It is truly one of their finest efforts and one of the most enjoyable thrash albums on the modern metal scene.
Overkill’s fourteenth studio effort released on March 22nd, 2005. With “ReliXIV” the band went further in the direction taken on their previous offering, in the same time looking back at some of the ideas found on their sixth LP – “I Hear Black”. The result was quite controversial, but worked out pretty good for the band. The ten tracks included on the album showcased an impressive songwriting diversity. We have modern thrash anthems such as “A Pound of Flesh”, “Within Your Eyes” and the extremely catchy “Bats in the Belfry”, groove-thrash juggernauts like “Wheelz” and “Play The Ace”, and a bunch of surprises, including “Loaded Rack” – sounding almost like a Metallica tune from “The Black Album”, “Keeper” – with Candlemass-style intro and “Old School” – the perfect tribute to 1980’s thrash metal (which also includes a short sample featuring the famous host of hard rock and heavy metal themed radio and TV shows – Eddie Trunk). The flawless production instantly makes this album one of the best-sounding releases on the modern thrash metal scene. “ReliXIV” is a worthy successor to “Killbox 13”, bringing yet another dose of Overkill’s prime musical taste. This is a must-have for any fan of diverse, but equally enjoyable thrash metal.

In 2008, Blaze Bayley released his 4th solo album, The Man Who Would Not Die. On this new album, the former Iron Maiden front man has a brand new band cranking out the quality metal on this release.
Quite honestly, I am not familiar with the musicians in Bayley’s current band. With that being said, I had no expectations going into Blaze Bayley’s latest solo effort. Much to my surprise, Bayley has put together an ultra tight band that truly delivers the goods.
Nicolas and David Bermudez both came from a band called Under Threat. Judging from the tunes on this CD, and the songs I have heard from that band, Blaze Bayley has found two hotshot players for his current group. I am quite impressed with aggressive riffing and pummeling bass of these two brothers from Columbia.
I don’t know why Blaze Bayley doesn’t receive more credit in the metal world. He easily delivers what is the vocal performance of his career.
The Man Who Would Not Die sounds like a classic 80’s metal CD. The songs are filled with super tight riffs, and a kick ass rhythm section to drive the songs home. From the very first song, you will find it impossible to keep yourself from headbanging. The opening and title track, “The Man Who Would Not Die” is the type of song that you will NOT want to drive to. If you do, a speeding ticket may ensue, as the high speed rhythm of this song will definitely pump you up. The shredding on this tune is fantastic!
Some of the highlights on The Man Who Would Not Die are, “Blackmailer”, “Samurai”, “A Crack In The System”, and “Robot”. There honestly isn’t a bad tune on this CD.
I can’t seem to get “Blackmailer” out of my head. It is practically impossible to not sing along with this song. The music is great, and Bayley’s vocals truly give this song a classic metal feel. I love it!
“Samurai” could have easily been a tune from Iron Maiden. It really is that good!
If you love riff heavy metal, you need to find this CD now! The Man Who Would Not Die is one my favorite new metal CD’s. My only complaint is that I didn’t hear this music sooner.

Finally!! Mick Jones has released a new Foreigner album with the touring lineup that includes Kelly Hansen (Hurricane, Unruly Child) on vocals and Jeff Pilson (Dokken, War & Peace) on bass, and Brian Tichy (Pride & Glory) on drums. If you are expecting a dirty, balls out rocker you may be a little disappointed, but not surprised because that is not what Foreigner has evolved into over the years, but with the release of Can’t Slow Down fans of such releases as 4, Agent Provocateur, and Inside Information will rejoice. Admittedly I was a little iffy when I heard Kelly Hansen was singing with Foreigner a few years ago, that was until I heard the Extended Versions Live album after that I was hooked. I will let everyone know this right now, Kelly Hansen sounds absolutely phenomenal on Can’t Slow Down.
The title track “Can’t Slow Down” gets us going on the right track, it has that classic Foreigner sound everyone knows and loves. I can see why NASCAR wants to use this foot tapping rocker. One thing Hansen never got a real chance to do in Hurricane or even on Unruly Child’s “Waiting For The Sun” was sing on some slower mid tempos and ballads, but on Can’t Slow Down he get his chance in spades and he damn sure makes the most of the opportunities. “In Pieces” is his first shot and he absolutely nails it, this song definitely needs a shot as a single, I have a feeling it will scorch the charts once it is released. Aside from Hansen’s vocals, Jeff Pilson lays down some very nice bass lines, but Michael Bluestein’s keyboards really stand out filling out the song, this is definitely one of my favorite songs on the album. The first single from Can’t Slow Down is next and “When It Comes To Love” is already on the charts, and this mid-tempo number will fit in perfectly with such songs as “Waiting For A Girl Like You”, “I Want To Know What Love Is”, and others. Some more nice keyboards from Bluestein and Tom Gimbel’s saxophone is a nice touch also. “Living In A Dream” picks up the pace with a little nod back to Foreigner’s 70s sound, love the horns laced throughout and Tichy’s drumming as well. “Ready” and “Give Me A Sign” keep the train rolling with two more solid tracks. I can’t see the guys not playing “Ready” live as this upbeat anthem would definitely get the crowd going. “I’ll Be Home Tonight” is another mid-tempo number made for radio, Hansen shines once again. “Too Late” is another nod back to Foreigner’s 70s sound and it could easily fit onto “Head Games” or “Double Vision”. “As Long As I Live” and “Fool For You Anyway” are two more tracks that really stand out on Can’t Slow Down.
Can’t Slow Down is a 2 cd/dvd set from Wal Mart, and like the other Wal Mart exclusive releases like Kiss’s Sonic Boom and Journey’s Revelation there is a remix cd of some Foreigner’s classics, if you have any doubt about Kelly Hansen filling Lou Gramm’s shoes I suggest you give the remixes a listen. Not to take away from the performances of Mick Jones, Jeff Pilson, and the others on Can’t Slow Down because they are sound great on this album, but for me Kelly Hansen’s vocals are what made this album. I’ve always been a fan of his singing but I think his performance on Can’t Slow Down may well be the best of his career. I’m already looking forward to this line-up’s next album, hopefully Mick and the guys don’t make us wait to long.

One of the world’s most popular and enduring rock bands, Foreigner will use Auto Club Speedway as the backdrop for its NASCAR-inspired title track to their new three-disc collection, including a CD album of all new music, a CD album of brand new remixes of the band’s original hit recordings, and a DVD of the band in concert and beyond. The release will be available from Rhino Entertainment Sept. 29, exclusively at Walmart.
Foreigner has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. Their hits are a mainstay of Classic Rock radio and include “Feels Like The First Time”, “Hot Blooded”, “Urgent”, “Dirty White Boy”, “Juke Box Hero”, ‘Waiting for A Girl Like You”, ‘Head Games”, and their worldwide number one ’I Want To Know What Love Is”. Foreigner’s fourth album, Foreigner “4”, spent more weeks on the Billboard chart at number one than any album by AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, U 2, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Genesis, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, and any artist in Atlantic Record’s 60 year history.
Foreigner’s race weekend performance is just a part of the iconic rock group’s larger collaboration with NASCAR. The band’s integration into NASCAR nation will also
feature additional live performances at NASCAR events in 2009 and 2010, as well as a special video project that will include the NASCAR-inspired song “Can’t Slow Down.” NASCAR has had a history of at-track activations with several high-profile musical acts, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, O.A.R. and recording artists Kelly Clarkson, LeAnn Rimes and Sheryl Crow.

One of the lesser known bands in my vast CD collection is I, Napoleon. This band’s self titled debut was released towards the end of the hair metal era. Judging from the perfect coiffures the band members have on the back cover of this CD, they were certainly trying to appeal to the hair metal crowd. The music on this CD is so completely random, I don’t think I could truly classify them as one.
When I picked this up in the 90’s on cassette, I remembered not really getting into this very much, but couldn’t remember the tunes at all. I recently replaced this CD, and found that I liked this a lot more than when it was first released.
Singer Steve Napoleon’s voice sounds like a cross between Richard Black from Shark Island, and Steven Shareaux from Kik Tracee but the music is nothing like either one of those bands.
The opening track “Perfect Absolution” kind of sounds like a White Lion tune with a different style of singer. It is an o.k. opener, but there better songs on this CD.
The keyboards on “Go To Pieces” sounds like they should be in a Honeymoon Suite song, than from I, Napoleon. The vocals are pretty cool on this tune.
“Come Back Soon” fires off with a bunch of La, La, La’s. My first reaction was “What the hell is this?”. That part of the tune is kind of annoying, but catchy in an odd way too. The rest of it is pretty good.
“Everytime I See Your Picture” is a keyboard based power ballad that could have had a little bit of hit potential, assuming the band got some radio airplay, of which they received very little. This is a cover song from the Canadian singer Luba, who did have a top 40 hit with this song.
“Whipped Silly” is easily one of my favorite tunes on this CD. You have to love the Cowbell!
“I Am The Idiot” is cool rocker that blasts out a saxophone solo towards the middle of the song. You have to love the classic lyrics “Life’s a bitch and I’m a whore, at least I’m not some goddamn bore”.
“Sweet Cyanide” is a pretty straight forward sleazy rocker, and good tune at that.
“Concerto in D Minor” is a piano instrumental that pretty much adds nothing to this CD at all. Its inclusion here is just weird.
This CD has been out of print for years, but you can still find copies of it, at this link. Back in the 90’s, I didn’t care for this CD, but now I think its kind of cool. The low price makes it a CD worth checking out.
