When I first received the CD from Helsinki, Finland’s Renegade Ride, I had no expectations. I was not familiar with the band, or what they sounded like. With that being said, the band’s new CD, Dream Machine, was a pleasant surprise to me.

Renegade Ride have put together a great modern sounding CD, while having a sound that reminds me of a mixture of The Cult,  Velvet Revolver, a dash of T-Ride and maybe a dabble  of Soundgarden. It is a refreshing change from all of the Nickleback clones that are currently invading U.S. radio air waves.

Singer Jakko Latva-Pukkila has a voice that is similar to The Cult’s Ian Astbury.  It is that likeness that helps give Renegade Ride a familiar sound that I quickly took to.

The opening cut “Stars” has the extremely cool groove, that demands replay. I love the guitar tones on this song as well.

The title track , “Dream Machine” is a song that has a funky progressive T-Ride like sound to it.  I haven’t heard any band do anything like this in quite a while.  It works for Renegade Ride as this is one of the better tunes on Dream Machine.

“Burnin’ Up Inside” starts of with this middle eastern intro.  It evolves into this catchy yet grungy rocker.

Another cool rocker is “Break Me To Pieces”. This tune has a southern rock vibe with an interesting jangly guitar riff.

My favorite tune on Dream Machine is the song “Crusader”.  This song starts off with this really cool guitar riff, and build into a moody, mid-tempo rocker.  I have gotten a lot of replay out of this one.

Overall, Renegade Ride has put together one hell of a debut effort.  It is amazing to me when an independent band puts together a quality release like this, and gets little press.  This is a band that is worth your time, and your cold hard cash.
