HELLOWEEN – “UNARMED, BEST OF 25TH ANNIVERSARY” TAKES A METAL DETOUR!
For 25 years, this pioneering Power Metal band originating from Germany, has taken their fans along a journey of 12 studio albums. From Helloween’s legendary 1985 debut, Walls Of Jericho, to their 2007 release, Gambling With The Devil, this important, resilient, multi-talented and influential band has many a song to choose from for their Unarmed, Best Of 25th Anniversary album. One can debate for a year and a day, as to which of their favorite Helloween songs were included or ignored for this milestone album release. Regardless, Unarmed is by far and large, the most grandiose Helloween album ever to have been created.
Usually, upon my hearing the news of a new Helloween album coming up on the Metal horizon, I begin to lick my chops in anticipation of more speed, power and old school Heavy Metal from this incredible band. Well, Metal truth be told, Unarmed is quite the Metal detour for Helloween and their worldwide fan base too. These classic Helloween songs from years long past, have undergone some major changes in their arrangements! Allow me to explain further… an untold number of composers, producers and arrangers all embarked on the restructuring of these 11 Helloween classics heard on Unarmed. Try this on for Metal size – the 70 Piece Prague Philharmonics Orchestra and the London Choir also play a major role in the musical identity of Unarmed!
Certainly, these songs do sound remarkably different, only this detour did not disappoint me one bit. As an old Metal wise man once told me… “change is a good thing”. Still, this is quantum change for any Helloween fans ears to handle upon a first listen to Unarmed. It’s like shifting gears while driving a standard, it’s all about instinct – while accepting such a dramatic musical change of pace. I became instantly aware from the first note of “Dr. Stein”, that I needed to shift my Metal soul into a mellow soul. “Dr. Stein” does play out as a Classic Rock song, now. With similarities to early 1980’s E Street Band, (minus The Boss), “Dr. Stein” is a knee slapping, foot tapping good time… courtesy of the horn section that really adds to the flavor.
As Unarmed plays out, the quality and sum of the musical parts far outweigh any distractions that I may have experienced during several complete listens of Unarmed. The distractions being – where’s the Speed Metal? Hey, this used to be a Power Metal song! And… the ultimate distraction of them all… could I possibly be falling over for this Unarmed version of Helloween? Metal be thy name! Metal as my witness, I have a soft spot in my Metal heart for this Unarmed chapter of Helloween.
For those die-hard Helloween fans that may not absorb musical change with Metal ease… do not despair for you most likely will not be alone. Fans will either love or (gasp) dislike what Helloween has embarked upon here. I just so happen to be an open minded Metalhead that upholds a love for music, thus my appreciation towards such a drastic change by Helloween is not an alarming issue in my Metal world at all.
Truth be told, Helloween has showed me why I have admired them as musicians first and foremost for so many years, their musical transition on Unarmed has been presented upon my ears, with the highest of quality standards and without question… credibility. Helloween loyalists will embrace Unarmed, as for other curious fans out there… don’t be afraid, take a chance on Unarmed, it won’t ruin your Metal soul!
One last interesting note: there is a hidden track on Unarmed! The song title is – “Why”. My question is this, why is “Why” a hidden track? There is absolutely no mention of this song within the liner notes either. An Unarmed, Helloween mystery that may never be explained!

I have been looking forward to seeing Primal Fear play live for over a year now. I planned to see the band play live at the severely screwed up and canceled music festival, Rock Gone Wild. Everyone at Michaels Entertainment would like to thank all fans and friends for their continued thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.
At this point Bret remains in ICU in critical condition. He is under 24 hour doctors care and supervision. We are hopeful that further tests will locate the source of the bleeding, which has still not been located. As we all know Bret is a fighter and we are hopeful that once all is complete the slurred speech, blurred vision and dizziness, etc. will be eliminated and all functions will return to normal.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
Bret Michaels’s health has taken a turn for the worse, PEOPLE has learned: After an excruciating headache late Thursday night, the star was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where doctors discovered he suffered a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding at the base of his brain stem), according to a source close to the situation.
Michaels, 47, is currently in critical condition. “After several CAT scans, MRIs and an angiogram, [doctors] decided to keep Michaels in the ICU and are running several tests to determine the cause. [It] will be touch and go for the next few days while he is under intense observation,” the source says.

February 26th seems such a long time ago, when “Hoodoo” was released in multiple countries around the world. As you read on our NEWS page, the cd shot from zero to Number 1 in Switzerland in the first week of release and is in the charts in many other countries as well.
In Switzerland the cd turned “gold” on the 1st day of release and within 4 weeks after release earned the band “Platinum Record Award” status! Congrats to KROKUS and double-congrats to Chris Von Rohr, who besides co-writing, recording and designing the cd cover also produced the “Hoodoo” with blood, sweat and tears (of joy). Sony Music will present to the band their gold and platinum awards prior to the first concert of the “Hoodoo Tour” in Zuchwil on April 30th, 2010.
And 6 weeks after release, “Hoodoo” is still in the “Top 5” of the Swiss charts and continuously selling strong, thanks to all of you fans.
Yesterday, Japan released “Hoodoo” in their country and May 25th is the release date in the USA.
In 1979, the debut album from Accept was unleashed on the world. And it was good! In 1992, Jackyl’s debut took the world by storm. And it was good! In 2010, SNEW singer Curtis Don Vito was possessed by the spirit of Jesse James Dupree and Udo Dirkschneider. And it is good!
Ok, all seriousness aside, SNEW’s latest effort, “We Do What We Want” sounds like a blast from the past, and somehow manages to meld the sounds of Jackyl & Accept into ten shots of hard rock supremacy. Curtis Don Vito’s whiskey stained vocals have seemed to have gotten even stronger since NEW’s fantastic 2008 debut, SNEW YOU. Not only does Curtis sound better, but SNEW as a whole seems to have taken it up a notch. The guitar work of Andy Lux is excellent. He dishes out plenty of killer riffs for you to crank up and enjoy!
Some of my favorites are the Rhino Bucket like title track, “We Do What We Want”, SNEW’s new single, “Feedback and Distortion” and the rocker “Pick Up The Ball”.
I am a sucker for some good raunch & roll, and SNEW’s We Do What We Want delivers the goods. If I had any complaints, it would be that this CD ends far too fast. Good thing I have a repeat button! Grab your copy of this CD in the SNEW store, and let the headbanging commence!

DEFTONES PREMIERES VIDEO FOR “DIAMOND EYES” ON MYSPACE

The first noticeable thing about Social Code’s debut album, Rock N Roll, is how perfect the title fits. Rock N Roll is just that, rock music at its finest. Social Code has created a record that is destined for glory and it’s an album that all hard rock fans should own. Rock N Roll is one of the best records to come out in 2010.
Social Code takes the simple approach to creating rock music – four musicians, no filler. Following the format of great rock bands from the 70s and 80s, each member of Social Code has their own place in the band. There is no double duty for vocalist Travis Nesbitt. He concentrates on his strength, which is singing. The same is true for fellow members Morgan Gies (guitar), Logan Jacobs (bass), and Ben Shillabeer (drums). They all do their part to create the music and they all do it exceptionally well.
Best described as dirty (or gritty) rock, Rock N Roll is a powerful album. Blending the styles of Hinder, Lynch Mob, and Papa Roach, Social Code is the real deal and Rock N Roll proves it. Opening with an odd acoustic ballad to rock and roll music, the title track is a strange lead song for such an intense record. “Rock N Roll” is an acoustic ballad to Social Code’s one true muse, rock music. Simple and sweet, “Rock N Roll” is a great song, but the weakest on the record. The acoustic format is nothing like the rest of the record and it’s odd that the song didn’t kick into a rock anthem halfway through.
The rest of the album does that instead. From the opening riffs of “Nothing Left To Lose” to the final chord of “Too Late For Tomorrow”, nothing but fist pumping, sing-along, hard rock music is pushed out of the speakers. Bar jamming, foot stomping, good time hard rock is what Rock N Roll is all about. With incredible guitar work from Morgan Gies, and exceptional vocals from Travis Nesbitt, Social Code is almost guaranteed to be the best new band of 2010.
Lead single Satisfied is a brilliant tribute to the one night stand. Launching with an excellent guitar riff, Satisfied kicks in with pounding rock drums and Travis Nesbitt’s raspy vocals singing an ode to a woman who just wants to have sex. No strings attached, no names are necessary, the woman of this song just wants to have fun for the night and then leave, with the promise of leaving you Satisfied. One thing is certain, this single is highly satisfying.
“Buy Buy Baby” sounds like it could have been included on George Lynch’s Souls of We. Opening with a funky bass line from Logan Jacobs, “Buy Buy Baby” is a grooving rock tribute to those who are addicted to spending. With a chorus that has you up on your feet, singing along, and dancing to the music, “Buy Buy Baby” is an excellent track.
Rock N Roll is not without its power ballads. However, these are not your father’s power ballads. “Real Girl” is the first power ballad, with the emphasis on power. An awesome guitar riff launches the song and a sing-along chorus of “I need a real girl, real world/I needed someone to hold on to/I need a real girl real world/how did I ever end up with you,” pulls it all together. Far from sappy, and miles away from the modern ballads, “Real Girl” is a ballad with balls.
“Stay” is the other power ballad on the disc and while it’s sappier than “Real Girl”, it still packs its own hard core punch. Nesbitt’s vocals shine on this song. Opening with a soft verse that finds him in an octave higher than most of the record, the chorus bites down hard with a head banger’s chant that pleases the ear in orgasmic fashion. Stay is the way all power ballads should sound.
An absolute incredible masterpiece, Social Code’s Rock N Roll is an album that must be added to your collection. If you are a fan of hard rock music that is just plain fun, Rock N Roll is the record for you. Disturbed have just announced the title of their upcoming album – “Asylum.” As with Indestructible, Disturbed are self-producing Asylum, which they began writing in September 2009 and recording in February of this year. David Draiman describes it as “still identifiably Disturbed, but showing more maturation. We feel this is one of the strongest bodies of work we’ve ever put together. It definitely goes in familiar areas, but with new levels of precision and skill.”
Lyrically, Draiman says, the themes “range from very personal and introspective to the political and provocative. What would you expect? No songs about puppy dogs or rainbows here.”
“We want this record to be a shining example of how the years have made us stronger,” Draiman says. “We want it to be a record that helps people get through their own trials and tribulations, as always.”

Frontiers Records to release Germany’s Prog Metal finest VANDEN PLAS highly anticipated new concept album
The Seraphic Clockwork” in the shops on
June 4th in Europe and June 22nd in the U.S.A.
A good four years after Vanden Plas last critically acclaimed studio recording, “Christ O” hit the charts, Germany’s finest Prog Metal act is set to release its brand new album: “The Seraphic Clockwork”, on June 4th, in Europe and June 22nd in the USA.
Highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, “The Seraphic Clockwork” is a fascinating concept album, which not only shows the quintet’s exceptional technical skills, but also highlights their impressive development as songwriters. The new album sounds more multi-layered, progressive and metal-oriented than any previous Vanden Plas release. “I think that my penchant for music of the tougher persuasion shines through more than ever before on this album,” comments guitarist Stephan Lill, who – together with keyboardist Günter Werno and vocalist Andy Kuntz – make up the group’s creative triumvirate. He adds: “Hard riffs, elaborate keyboard and orchestral arrangements plus catchy hooklines come together in a perfect symbiosis which marks Vanden Plas’ own style. I feel that we were much more adventurous on with The Seraphic Clockwork than ever before.”
A perfect example which substantiates this statement, is the 13-minute track ‘On My Way To Jerusalem’, a little masterpiece within a homogeneous, self-contained album. The song takes the listener on a haunting, adventurous journey which comes full circle musically towards its end. From soaring piano sounds through hard riffs and versatile arrangements to atmospheric parts, the whole range of expressive forms which the Progressive Metal genre has to offer are present. On the other hand, ‘Heal The World’ with its melodic intro, subsequent heavy riff and catchy chorus, reveals the band’s affinity to theatre music and all its complexity, and is classic Vanden Plas.
The band’s fascination with classical history has left its mark on “The Seraphic Clockwork” particularly in terms of lyrics: the dramatic science fiction story of the concept album was penned by vocalist Andy Kuntz and chronicles a journey in place and time from 16th century Rome to Jerusalem in the year 33 A.D. The protagonist, after an apocalyptic vision, has come under the spell of an Old Testament prophecy and must travel back through the centuries to face his God-given destiny. “It’s about being unable to escape fate”, explains Kuntz, a master at making complex subject matter both fascinating and accessible to contemporary audiences. “Working for the theatre has definitely influenced the story’s depth. When you realize or reproduce your own projects on a stage, you learn a lot about dramaturgy.”
“The Seraphic Clockwork” was exclusively presented to the journalists in a press showcase held in Koln, Germany on April 9th. Some of the reactions to the preview include:
“Great comeback of Germany’s leading Prog Metal band!”
Mike Borrink – Rock Hard Germany
“Those who have been concerned that Vanden Plas might have lost their riff power over the last few years don’t have to worry anymore: their new album „The Seraphic Clockwork“ is a perfect example for a well-balanced mixture of intelligent prog tunes, heavy riffing and the uncompromising love for hard music.”
Thorsten Zahn – Classic Rock Mag Germany
“They’ve made us wait but one of the best and most respected Progressive Metal bands are back with the heaviest, most epic and diverse album of their career to date. Awesome stuff.”
Matthew Adrian Spall – Powerplay , UK
“The Seraphic Clockwork” is unbelievable, fantastic, great music with a great story. Vanden Plas are the Prog Metal kings.”
Marco Magin – Breakout, Germany
“Intense, melodic and challenging at the same time, this new offering by Vanden Plas has what it takes to please the most demanding Progressive Metal fans.”
Morgan Rivalin – Rock Hard France
The musical and lyrical complexity of “The Seraphic Clockwork” is certainly inspiring. Vanden Plas have proved again that they are the most imaginative and diverse of German Prog Metal bands and justly enjoy the highest international acclaim. It can only be a matter of time before this concept album also makes it onto the stage.
“The Seraphic Clockwork” includes the following tracks:
Andy Kuntz (vocals), Stephan Lill (guitar), Günter Werno (keyboards), Torsten Reichert (bass), Andreas Lill (drums)
COLOUR TEMPLE (1995)
THE GOD THING (1997)

Glam hard rockers LA ROXX for the reissue of their self-titled album released through Steelheart Records.
For the very first time on CD the debut-album of Glam/Street Hard Rockers from Italy LAROXX originally out, only on cassette, in 1992.
-The album was originally recorded for a release in USA and Japan thru a major-label, and a promotional tour in the States (prior of the announced release) was set up, with gigs played at famous “Troubador”, “Foundation Forum” and “F.M. Station” in Los Angeles. Unfortunately things went bad, as the label supposed to release the album suddenly dropped the offer, so the band found itself with a great (and expensive!) album in its hands without a label ready to release it!
-The album has a pure Party-Glam-Street Rock flavour, close to the sound of US bands like Poison, Pretty Boy Floyd and early Motley Crue.
-Fantastic artwork with a de-luxe full colour 16 pages booklet, including pics, memorabilia and lyrics, plus a fully re-mastered sound from the original DAT master-tapes!
1- Intro – Run (Animal)
2- Where Is My Way
3- Before It’s Too Late

Empires of Eden is very proud to announce Zak Stevens as one of the feature artists on the upcoming album Reborn in Fire. After rising to legendary status as lead singer for Savatage and Circle II Circle as well as Machines of Grace, Zak is featured on a full-length song on the album.
Zak’s vocals were recorded in Tampa, Florida by Mark Prator, who engineered the Savatage albums Edge Of Thorns and Handful of Rain. The album was mixed and mastered at Frontiers Studio in Sydney, Australia.
From Zak: “It’s an understatement to say that I had an amazing time working on the new Empires of Eden CD. Stu Marshall is a super-talented recording musician who really knows how to get the best performances out of the artists he works with. Stu asked me to write my own lyrics and vocal melodies to the song I appeared on (‘Prognatus Ut Obscurum’). That’s exactly how I like to do things, and that really allowed me to bring out more of myself on the composition. As a result I was able to give an all-round stronger performance, there’s no doubt about it. Working with Stu was a fantastic experience for me. His vision for the overall spectrum of the album was stunning. I learned a lot… and that’s what it’s all about in the world of music and artist collaboration.”
The new album from Empires of Eden, Reborn in Fire will feature some of the world’s most respected heavy metal voices, including the already announced, Mike Vescera. Reborn in Fire is set for release in June 2010 through 7Hard Records. Further announcements on the guests will continue in the coming weeks.

Kotzens New Masterpiece PEACE SIGN Out NOW!
USA TOUR DATES HERE & VIP PACKAGES
Richie Kotzen will hit the road on his world tour starting in South America April 22nd in Goiania, Brazil, but is working his way back to his long-awaited return to the USA. This will be his first string of tour dates in the USA in over a decade and a concert not to miss. He will be performing from his 17 plus solo albums with various charting hits he wrote or performed with Poison and Mr. Big.
Kotzens latest critically acclaimed release PEACE SIGN on Headroom Inc is sweeping the Nation. Kotzen has an amazing ability to create projects that awe critics and inspire aspiring musicians having done it again with his new release. “I’m really excited about this new CD,” explains Kotzen. “I’m not sure how I did it, but somehow I think it has a really live sound, even though I’m playing all the instruments on all but four songs. I think it is because of the music I grew up on. Bands like Cream, The Stones, and of course Hendrix all had that ‘live — create it on the spot’ sound so I suppose that is the way I hear music.
Kotzen has been touted as “one of the best guitar players in the world” with a voice on par with some of the greatest rock/soul singers. He has also enjoyed a truly incredible journey in the world of music. Among numerous accomplishments, in 2006 as a solo artist, Kotzen was the opening act for the legendary Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang Tour in Japan. And in addition to writing and being featured on #1 charting albums and tracks, Kotzen has amassed an impressive 25 plus album discography.

British born vocalist extraordinaire David Coverdale paid his dues early on with superstar band Deep Purple before setting a new musical course with the group he formed & has led thro several incarnations since the late 70s. Though the band had released several platinum selling albums prior to this, the 1987 self-titled Whitesnake, none matched their new musically muscular approach, or the impact that this hit-driven, melodic-yet-heavy-rocking release attained.
Initially the album was given significant attention with the release of the video Still Of The Night, which was the longest promo video MTV ever played on heavy rotation at that time, & introduced the band to millions of unsuspecting viewers who until then had never heard of the British import.
The song, though never released as a single, was a smash at rock radio. Sales then went through the roof with the release of the energetic No. 1 single Here I Go Again followed by soulful ballad Is This Love, which reached No. 2, & fans of Whitesnake both old and especially new embraced the album with open arms as it went on to become a multi-million selling success in the U.S. alone.
The synchronicity of an album loaded with some great classic rock anthems that are as vital today as they were when the were first released, & arriving during an era fuelled by music videos & the monster promotional vehicle that MTV was at that time, proved an irresistible force that could not be ignored.
This DELUXE EDITION offers powerful video footage on Disc Two from various live performances appearing along with those memorable, magical promotional videos mentioned above.
Joining the original album, which has been freshly digitally remastered, are four live stage performances of the memorable songs from this album, which were all Billboard chart hits.
This is a must for any discerning rock fan to have in his, or her collection.

FarCry are hot on the heels of their critically-acclaimed Kivel Records debut “High Gear,” and are poised to make their triumphant New Jersey debut Sunday, April 25, at the KatManDu nightclub. The band has played several high-profile shows around the US , sharing the bill with such rock icons as Bret Michaels, Firehouse, Skid Row, April Wine, Dokken, and Enuff Z’Nuff.
This event represents more than just an amazing rock show, but also the homecoming of Trenton native Mark Giovi, FarCry front man, and a vocalist with a prolific list of accomplishments to his name. Although he has performed around the world in a variety of capacities, Giovi still admits, “there is no place like home.” Currently living in Las Vegas , Giovi is the featured singer in the nightly hit show “Bite,” and is also one of the founding members of the Las Vegas Tenors.
Joining Giovi is guitarist extraordinaire Pete Fry. Both musicians had coincidentally played together in the burgeoning Trenton hard rock scene of the 80s and 90s, and were miraculously reunited by producer John Kivel in the interest of forming a rock and roll super group, which became FarCry.
Fry and Giovi are ecstatic to finally be able to play in their hometown, since this is the band’s first area appearance. “This will be our first show in NJ, and it is exciting. I’m looking forward to do the new songs for family, friends, and fans I have not seen for a long time. I can’t wait,” said Giovi. Pete Fry echoes this sentiment and adds, “Not only is it great to play for the home crowd, it’s almost a surreal experience to share the stage with Mark after so many years. Better still to share the bill with Harmzway is awesome… Like stepping back through time… To ROCK!”
Opening band’s Harmzway is also celebrating an exultant reunion after a 15-year hiatus, reigning as a hardworking regional band in the late 80s and early 90s. Members Carmen “Doug” Bitonti (Vocals/Bass), Damon Duchai (guitars), and Joe Suarez (drums) plan to hit the ground running and prove that time has not diminished their edge in the slightest. Kicking the night off with a special acoustic set is Goodbye Thrill.
KatManDu is located at Route 29 – 50 Riverview Executive Park – Mercer County Waterfront Park, Trenton , NJ 08611 (609) 393-7300. Doors at 7:30 p.m., tickets are $10.00 and all 21+ are welcome.
Man oh Mercy! What is going on in the RATT Camp? RATT’s new album Infestation sounds like a return to 1987 when rock was fun, and this merry band of rodent rockers were amongst the biggest bands of the hair metal era. Infestation is easily RATT’s best album since 1985’s Invasion of Your Privacy.
I must admit that I didn’t have high hopes for this CD. My memory of RATT’s last album, their self titled effort from ’99, still lingers in my memory. Needless to say, I didn’t care for it very much. Luckily Infestation has quickly made me remember the RATT of old. Warren DeMartini’s blazing guitar solos are back, and are a pleasure to hear once more. Carlos Cavazo seems to do a pretty good job trading off licks with Warren. Stephen Pearcy’s vocals are on point. He hasn’t sounded this good in quite some time.
Any way you look at it, RATT has some renewed energy, and the songs on Infestation shine as a result. Chances are, you may have heard “Eat Me Up Alive”, and “Best of Me” (See video below), and if so, you already know that Infestation has two big hit worthy tunes to lead off the CD. The fun doesn’t end there. “Look Out Below” sounds like the cousin of “Way Cool Jr”. “Lost Weekend” kind of reminds me of “Lack of Communication”. This is a very catchy tune, that seems like it would have been better served with the name, “Rock Steady” instead.
DeMartini’s playing has always been awesome, and his bluesy licks on “Garden of Eden” are awesome. You need to listen to this one multiple times to fully appreciate his guitar work here. “Take A Big Bite” is a monster tune from RATT. The layered guitar riffs on this song are pretty incredible. This song is going to get a lot of play from me.
‘Take Me Home” is the slowest song on Infestation, and one of the only ones that has keyboards. Thankfully, this song does NOT fall into the power ballad trap, and is a very solid tune. I probably would have mixed this song more towards the middle of the album to break up the pace a little bit more, but it works nonetheless.
The Bottom Line: Infestation is a return to form for RATT. The band has returned to their classic sound, and have ripped out another great album, that is easily one of their best. If you have ever been a fan of the band, you owe it to yourself to go out and pick this disc up as soon as possible. Infestation rocks!!

ARMORED SAINT – TRIUMPHANTLY RETURNS WITH “LA RAZA”
When Armored Saint decided to make a return to the recording studio, the Heavy Metal Gods were surely smiling upon them. If I’m to point out a “comeback” Heavy Metal album for 2010, La Raza gets my vote without hesitation. All ten songs on this new Armored Saint album are as quality a listen I’ve had all year. Released on March 16, 2010, on Metal Blade Records, La Raza is best summed up as the most complete sounding Armored Saint album that has ever been created. No pretensions and no gimmicks to be heard on La Raza, this is Armored Saint we are talking about.
Blame it on the inevitable maturation process of these seasoned musicians or maybe the fact that bass guitarist/song writer Joey Vera along with vocalist/song writer John Bush had something to prove to themselves and the rest of the world. Regardless, the solidarity of Armored Saint I hear on La Raza has never come across this potent and real before… to my ears.
I’m by no means overlooking any Armored Saint album of the past here, only pinpointing 2010 as a moment in time for this blue collar American Heavy Metal Band, that deserves to have their finest album to date exposed for what it is, and it is song writing brilliance. Lyrically, the songs on La Raza don’t glamorize keg parties and girls gone wild, no way, this is Armored Saint. With a glance and a nod to some Old School tendencies that can never be shaken off, (thank God for that), Armored Saint fuses their traditional Heavy Metal approach with oozing relevancy.
La Raza could very well be “that album” that captures the mood and attitude of the 1980’s metalheads that still wear their Heavy Metal hearts on their sleeves in 2010. Armored Saint may come across as mature, only the hardness of their musical roots shines through with decadent streams of heaviness on La Raza. Chilled is one amazingly cool song that radiates this mature ideal… both lyrically and musically. I personally have chosen “Chilled” to be my pick for Heavy Metal song of the year, one that should be played loud while taking a long Summer nights drive with the windows down.
The song “La Raza” reminds fans like me, that Armored Saint has not lost a step in their Heavy Metal beat. Guitarists Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan not only compliment each other, they streamline the identifiable sound that makes Armored Saint heavy in the first place. Melodic is this entire La Raza album, with multi flashes of thunderous outbursts coming from the bass lines of Joey Vera and the ultra solid drumming of Gonzo Sandoval. John Bush vocally sounds refreshed and driven… on every song.
An Old School retreat of a song like “Get Off The Fence” only embellishes La Raza all the more with its standout quality of songs. The guitar solo, multi licks and backing vocals on “Get Off The Fence” brings back memories as to why I got hooked on Traditional Heavy Metal in the first place. “Black Feet” alone can stand on its own Heavy Metal feet, (no pun intended), with its strategically placed slow tempos that cave into some seriously heavy grooves. “Left Hook From Right Field” takes its stab at 100% proof Heavy Metal and succeeds with its unforgettable riffs, leads and hooks… and John Bush singing lights out.
Heavy Metal purists should find themselves embarrassed, if they are to turn a deaf ear to this Armored Saint accomplishment of an album. Armored Saint and La Raza would be a listening requirement, mandated by me… if Heavy Metal was the law. Regardless of my wishful thinking, let La Raza engulf your ears soon, you don’t want to miss out on one gem of a Heavy Metal album… that 2010 and beyond has to offer.
