Friday night the German heavy metal band Primal Fear came to Louisville, Kentucky’s Phoenix Hill Tavern for a great night of metal & mayhem. This date has been on Primal Fear’s schedule for a few months, and I have been anxiously awaiting to see them play live for my very first time. Prior to the show I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Primal Fear’s guitarist Henny Wolter. I will post this on Hard Rock Hideout at a later time.
Denver, Colorado thrashers Havok opened up the show for Primal Fear. This three-piece act dished out classic thrash metal that reminded me of early Metallica & Slayer. They were far better than I expected them to be. Havok did a pretty good job warming up the crowd for Primal Fear. Check them out on myspace.
I was disappointed by the small crowd that turned out for Primal Fear in Louisville, but on this night there were several shows in town, including Fear Factory, which made it tough for Primal Fear to draw a large crowd. A quick look at the license plates in the parking lot, and you could see that fans drove in from all over the United States to catch this show. Even though the audience wasn’t huge, you would have never known it. It sounded like 1,000 people were in the Phoenix Hill Tavern. Everyone was feeding off of the band’s energy, and they were feeding off the crowd.
I knew that Primal Fear was going to be good live, but they far exceed my expectations. Ralf Scheepers is still singing at the top of his game. His range and screams have not diminished in the least. I was totally impressed not only by his vocal performance, but by the whole band in general. During the show, Henny Wolter & Alex Beyrodt did a dueling guitar solo. Alex Beyrodt’s style greatly differs from Henny Wolters, but they are both impressive players, and when they play in unison it is complete metal perfection.
Mat Sinner and Randy Black round out what is one of the best rhythm sections in heavy metal today. Mat does a fine job singing back up to Ralf Scheepers, and Randy Black is an absolute beast on the drum kit.
The set list included the songs: “Six Times Dead (16.6)”, “Riding the Eagle”, “Killbound”, “Fighting the Darkness”, “Running In the Dust”, “Nuclear Fire”, “Seven Seals”, “Battalions of Hate”, “Metal is Forever”.
The unofficial sixth member of Primal Fear, Pamela Moore (Queensryche, Solna) came out and sang on the songs “Seven Seals’, and “Fighting the Darkness”. Ralf Scheepers and Pamela Moore’s voices are completely different, and you would not think their voices would work together. When Pamela sang with Ralf on “Fighting the Darkness” it gave me goose bumps. It was absolutely incredible. Ralf Scheepers dedicated the song to the late, great Ronnie James Dio. It was a fitting tribute indeed.
The band closed out their set with their classic song, “Metal is Forever”. Check it out in the clip below.
After the show, I caught up with Alex Beyrodt, who shared with me that work has begun on the follow-up CD to Voodoo Circle. David Readman recently sent Alex 4 new songs. He is hoping to have the CD completed, and released in November. Alex told me a really cool Ronnie James Dio story that was too good not to share. A few years ago, Sinner opened up for DIO on their European tour. A few years later in 2006, Alex was at the NAMM convention. As he walked up and down the aisles of the convention, he noticed a huge line of fans waiting in line for autographs. He saw that it was Ronnie James Dio and Craig Goldy signing autographs at a table. Ronnie saw Alex out of the corner of his eye, and stopped in the middle of his signing session to walk over and talk to Alex, just to see how he was doing, and talk about their tour together. Alex didn’t expect Ronnie to remember him, and Ronnie took the time out of a busy signing session to talk to him. To me, this is just one more example of how great of a person Ronnie James Dio was.
All of the guys from Primal Fear made a point to come out after the show, and spend some time with their fans. Everyone was great, and the unplanned meet & greet afterwards made a great night of rock, a completely amazing experience.
Primal Fear doesn’t play in the United States very often, so you truly need to catch them live while they are here.

A few weeks ago when I was looking up information on the band Treat, I stumbled upon this video for “Ready for the Taking”. I haven’t seen the video or heard this song before, and I thought it was worth sharing. “Ready for the Taking” is from the band’s 1989 CD Organized Crime. Check it out!
Check out the new video clip from Buckcherry, “All Night Long”. This is the title track from Buckherry’s up and coming album, which will be released on August 3rd!
Chances are you have heard the final studio album, Sting in the Tail from the Scorpions by now. Have you ever listened to the Scorpions first studio album? The Scorpions debut Lonesome Crow was released 38 years ago in 1972 (gasp!). This album has a sound deeply seated in the seventies, and probably has more in common with bands like Iron Butterfly, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix & Cream. The music is early progressive rock, and is unlike anything else you will hear in the Scorpions’ discography. Even as a teenager, Michael Schenker proved to have some incredible guitar skills, although you have NEVER heard him play like this. Klaus Meine’s voice wasn’t as much in the forefront of the music as it is today, but when he does cut loose, you can almost sense a level of greatness within him. I can’t imagine what the folks who heard this first time in the seventies thought, but this is some trippy, psychedelic music that must be fully listened to, to be appreciated.
If you are the type of person that needs big sing-a-long hits, Lonesome Crow will not be an album for you. There aren’t any songs on this CD that would translate over to radio play very well. This CD does however showcase the raw early talent of this amazing band that so many of us have come to love over the years. Playing Lonesome Crow in 2010 will take you back to an era when rock was still primal, strange and unpolished. It is a radical beginning for the Scorpions, and is an album that requires multiple listens before you can fully grasp what you are hearing. Lonesome Crow is a mind-bending masterpiece that ought to be essential to all Michael Schenker fans, and Scorpions die-hards.

“OMEGA” OUT NOW ON FRONTIERS RECORDS
ASIA’s critically acclaimed rock track “An Extraordinary Life,” was chosen as the soundtrack for promotional spots announcing the 2010 season of AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. This show is among the most popular entertainment reality shows of all time. Last season the show peaked at the #1 position in overall viewership.
AMERICA’S GOT TALENT producers specifically sought out the rights to use the famed ASIA song, which was written by members John Wetton and Geoff Downes. The track was recorded shortly after Wetton survived open heart surgery, in 2007. The song celebrates “carpe diem”: each person’s ability to seize each day, living life to the fullest. The promotional spots for America’s Got Talent featuring “An Extraordinary Life,” begin airing on NBC in prime time, Wednesday, May 26th.
English band ASIA recently released OMEGA, their fifth album since 1982’s multi-platinum world best-selling debut, and the third release since reuniting in 2006. The band will launch a new North American tour in August, 2010. The already well-received album OMEGA is distributed by Frontiers Records (www.frontiers.it). EMI released ASIA’s best-selling album Phoenix [under license from Frontiers Record], containing the hit “An Extraordinary Life”. Both albums are available at www.amazon.com and other fine retailers.
The original members of ASIA are rock n’ roll superstars Geoff Downes (keyboards), Steve Howe (guitars), Carl Palmer (drums) and John Wetton (lead vocals and bass). More about the band can be found at www.originalasia.com

VINCE NEIL – “TATTOOS & TEQUILA” IS A ROCK ‘N’ ROLL RIDE TO TAKE!
By now, anyone who is unfamiliar with Vince Neil should put on their long sleeve turtleneck shirt and head out to their chess club tournament. Motley Crue can boast having the flamboyant, colorful and yes, vocally talented Vince Neil fronting their band going on three decades strong. So what is Vince Neil to do, since he has more than likely seen, heard and tasted it all? Make another solo album of course! After two previous solo studio albums and one live release, Vince Neil is not out to reinvent the Rock ‘N’ Roll wheel with Tattoos & Tequila… instead he is presenting an album to us, the fans, that is chock full of songs that apparently have influenced Vince Neil over his storied Hard Rockin’ career.
Vince Neil sounds as flamboyant and spirited as ever on his new album, exercising the knack for making these cover songs come to life in a fun and good times way. Cover songs can sometimes lead to the land of yawn… not quite so with Tattoos & Tequila, (to be released on Frontiers Records, June 22, 2010). Then again, what more could I have expected from Vince Neil? His voice alone sets the tone that I’m listening to some real deal Hard Rock, as only an Old School legend could deliver. Tattoos & Tequila may not go down as being the best album of 2010, still I will have it nailed down as one of the most fun and cool albums to listen to this year.
If life is about song and song is about life, then Vince Neil is telling his story, his way, through Tattoos & Tequila. A Rock ‘N’ Roll lifestyle that covers thirty years can be quite the impressive and roller coaster story, Vince Neil gives his fans a peek into his, through songs that may actually surprise you. “Viva Las Vegas” is one song I never gave a second thought to when it comes to Hard Rock or Heavy Metal and obviously Vince Neil has! Originally recorded by the late and ever legendary Elvis Presley, “Viva Las Vegas” is taken to harder and heavier heights like never before.
“Bitch Is Back” Rocks period… for Elton John intended so. Vince Neil just adds his trademark vocals and with a scorching band behind him, “Bitch Is Back” is just that… back! “Who Will Stop The Rain” is a Creedence Clearwater Revival classic of classics. Vince Neil sings this song with convincing reverence, I can’t help but salute the way this great song has been covered by Vince and his band. I will readily admit, that Jeff “Blando” Bland on guitar is a treat to listen to throughout this entire album. Dana Strum on bass and Zoltan Chaney on drums more than add the utmost credibility to every song on this album.
If there is to be that one cover song on Tattoos & Tequila that just explodes with instant relevance and pumped up Hard Rock thunder, it’s “Long Cool Woman”. Vince Neil gives The Hollies the greatest compliment for their song, by adding to it more raw emotion and just making it a hit once again. I wonder aloud to myself, at just how important it is to have a musical mind like Jack Blades at your side in producing an album of any Rock genre. Vince Neil and Jack Blades obviously clicked together, in making songs like “Long Cool Woman” very cool again in 2010.
Tattoos & Tequila uncoils twelve songs, ten covers and two new tracks. The two new songs are “Tattoos & Tequila” and “Another Bad Day”. “Tattoos & Tequila” is by far, the heaviest song on this album, with a large dose of Hard Rock relevance, Vince Neil impresses with his vocals, as so too his band. “Another Bad Day” is an up-tempo power ballad that radiates hints of Motley Crue from every angle and glistens with all the specialness of late 1980’s Arena Rock splendor. In my Metal opinion, “Another Bad Day” is a hit, a song that I have admittedly hit the repeat play button for numerous times over.
Originally written by Nikki Sixx, “Another Bad Day” just missed the cut for making it onto the Motley Crue album – “New Tattoo”, released in 2000. Vince Neil definitely made the right Rock ‘N’ Roll move to bring this song to light a decade later and deliver it to the fans… straight from the heart.
After repeated listens to Tattoos & Tequila, it would have been great if Vince Neil had added a couple more new songs to this album. With that said, it is apparent that there is some motivation within Vince Neil to come up with new solo material, let’s hope the future may dictate a full length studio album of just that, from this Heavy Music icon.
Life long Motley Crue fans, Hair Metal, Hard Rock and 1980’s mainstream Heavy Metal fans should easily absorb their ears into Tattoos & Tequila and walk away with a big grin on their face. It would not surprise me in the least, if Vince Neil recruits many new fans to his music and persona due to Tattoos & Tequila. This is an album that tantalizes with new material and dominates with enticing cover songs… while making the loud impression that Vince Neil is a true fan of Rock Music’s roots.

Greek melodic metallers FIREWIND are checking in at last again with good news regarding current activity as well as first details about their upcoming new studio album, which was completed throughout the last months and which will be ready to be launched worldwide via Century Media Records in the Fall of 2010.
As a first taster of great things to come, FIREWIND are currently featured on the May’s edition (Issue 205) Judas Priest tribute CD of UK’s Metal Hammer magazine, where FIREWIND present an addictive version of the classic “Breaking The Law” track and appear next to bands like Disturbed, Trigger The Bloodshed or Steelwing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the “British Steel” album. For more information, please visit: www.metalhammer.co.uk
FIREWIND mastermind and current OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Gus G. checks in as follows:
“I know it’s been a few silent months, but this time we decided to be pretty quiet about the recording process of our new album. Anyways, before we go into revealing more info, we recently did a very fun project which was to be a part of Metal Hammer UK’s Tribute CD to Judas Priest!
We actually recorded everything for that cover song in our home studios and then passed over the files to Fredrik Nordström / Studio Fredman in Sweden for the mix. This also marks our first recording with our new drummer, Michael Ehre and the end result is killer (in our humble opinion), as we got to cover one of Metal’s most classic songs: “Breaking The Law”!
As for our new album, it’s scheduled for a release sometime this Fall and the name of it is “Days Of Defiance“. We’ll soon check back and reveal more info, song names, etc.”
FIREWIND 2010 Line-Up (From left to right on the photo):
Michael Ehre – Drums
Petros Christo – Bass
Apollo Papathanasio – Vocals
Gus G. – Guitars
Bob Katsionis – Keyboards
Look out for more details about “Days Of Defiance” in the coming weeks…

It means a lot to me that you have embraced this song as something coming from the heart, and I’m truly grateful.
In just a few days more than 100.000 people have viewed the video on the internet, and the number is still rising…
Many people are too busy trying to reinvent the wheel, forgetting the talent, quality and originality of the people that paved the way, like Ronnie James Dio.
My intentions for writing ”Song for Ronnie James” was to bow down and pay respect to one of the greatest, most influential and unique artists the world has ever known.
When Ronnie passed away so sudden, I wasn’t sure whether or not the release of the song should be postponed for a while, but we decided to proceed with the release of the song as planned.
“Song for Ronnie James” was written before Ronnie got sick last year, and it makes me sad to know that he never got to hear it.
Without Ronnie’s presence, I would not have become the artist I am today.
It’s hard holding back the tears when reading all your wonderful comments, and once again I thank all of you for your support and recognition.
Ronnie James Dio lost his battle against cancer, but we must continue to fight this disease. Medical researchers are doing progress every day, and they need our help.
You can help World Cancer Research Fund International by following the link below.
I urge you all to contribute in any way you can, your help will make a difference.
Rumor has it, Alice Cooper and Kerri Kelli will be performing on the American Idol finale tonight. No idea what song they are playing, or who they are performing with. It might be a reason to tune in to AI tonight.
ABUSED ROMANCE, a Los Angeles based melodic rock band, has just announced they’ve signed with Freeway Records. The label is a division of Freeway Entertainment, which was formed by legendary Russ Regan (former president of Motown Records, 20th Century Records, selling over a billion records worldwide), and general partner Kent Jacobs (Police, Kiss, Prince, REM) in August of 2009.
Abused Romance was discovered by Regan and Jacobs in July of 2009 and instantly scored a management deal with Velocity Entertainment, Inc., as well as a distribution deal with Bungalo/Universal Music Group Distribution. The melodic rock band features Meir Yaniv (Vocals, Guitar), Amit Ofir (Guitar), Roy Chen (Drums) and Aetam Jakob (Bass). “Russ and I felt that this band had the skills to launch the label. What I love about Abused Romance is their strong musicianship and the fact that they all have the killer instinct. Amit Ofir (Guitar) and Meir Yaniv (Vocals, Guitar) have great producing skills and their writing abilities are superstar quality!” states Kent Jacobs. “We are a tight group of close friends, and are very passionate about our music. Whether we are on or offstage, writing songs or rehearsing, we give our all to this band and its purpose,” states Amit Ofir.
Abused Romance recorded their debut album “Shine” in Los Angeles, with producer Justin Gray (who has sold more than 20 million records worldwide, working with artists such as Joss Stone, INXS members and many more). The band’s debut album “Shine” was mixed by legendary mixer Randy Staub (U2, Metallica, Nickelback, Bon Jovi), mastered by Ted Jensen (Paramore, Metallica, Green Day) and will be released late 2010.

Anthem/Atlantic recording group Rush has announced the upcoming release of their eagerly anticipated new single. “Caravan” — which will be featured on the legendary band’s forthcoming album, “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” — will be available at all DSPs on June 1st and serviced to radio simultaneously.
“Caravan” will be bundled with an additional new album track, entitled “BU2B.” Both tracks were recorded earlier this year in Nashville with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, The Deftones), who previously collaborated with Rush on 2007’s critically acclaimed “SNAKES & ARROWS.” Rush will return to the studio to resume recording after the completion of the upcoming “Time Machine Tour,” with plans to release their 20th studio album, “CLOCKWORK ANGELS,” in 2011.
The “Time Machine Tour” will begin June 29th at Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Hard Rock Casino and then travel North America through early October (see below itinerary). The band is currently busy preparing for the tour, which include both “Caravan” and “BU2B” on each evening’s setlist alongside other Rush favorites. In addition, the band will be performing its 1981 masterpiece, “MOVING PICTURES,” in its entirety for the first time ever. Both “Caravan” and “BU2B” will also be offered as a special Limited Edition CD single, available to fans through the band’s official website as well as through various pre-sale tour packages. In related news, Zoë Vision in association with Banger Films is poised to release the band’s critically acclaimed, award-winning documentary, RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE, on DVD and Blu-ray. Set to arrive in stores everywhere on June 29th, RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE made its world premiere last April at New York City’s 9th annual Tribeca Film Festival. The film proved both a critical and popular sensation, with filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn taking home the festival’s coveted “Heineken Audience Award.”
RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE explores the forty-year career and phenomenon behind what could be the world’s biggest cult band. The film presents a comprehensive exploration of this extraordinary power trio, from their early days in Toronto, through each of their landmark albums, to the present day. The documentary features never-before-seen archival footage as well as interviews with some of today’s most respected rock artists such as Sebastian Bach, Jack Black, Billy Corgan, Kirk Hammett, Taylor Hawkins, Trent Reznor, and Gene Simmons.
The RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE DVD/Blu-ray will feature a second disc of exclusive bonus material, including previously unseen interviews, outtakes, backstage footage, and ultra-rare live performances of such Rush favorites as “La Villa Strangiato,” “Working Man,” and “YYZ.”
In addition to its DVD/Blu-ray release, RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE will also begin theatrical engagements across the country on June 10th. For a current list of cities and theatres, please visit www.rushbeyondthelightedstage.com.
With more than 40 million records sold worldwide, Rush — Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart — is without question one of the most inventive and compelling groups in rock history, equally famed for both its virtuoso musicianship and provocative songwriting. The RIAA has certified Rush for the third most consecutive gold/platinum studio albums by a rock band, topped only by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Among those 19 classic releases are 1974’s self-titled debut album, 1976’s “2112,” 1981’s “MOVING PICTURES,” 1996’s “TEST FOR ECHO,” and 2002’s “VAPOR TRAILS.”
Rush’s most recent studio collection, 2007’s “SNAKES & ARROWS,” made a triumphant debut on the Billboard 200 upon its initial release, entering the chart in the #3 spot. The album’s success marked the band’s highest chart debut since 1993, as well as their eleventh top 10 album in the U.S.
A career-chronicling Rolling Stone feature recently praised the renowned rock trio for its continuing artistic vitality, noting, “It’s true that Rush doesn’t mean today what it did in ’76 or even ’96. It may mean more.”

Ezrin has a rich history of hugely successful collaborations with Alice including such groundbreaking albums as Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome To My Nightmare, School’s Out andLove It To Death and has, in the past, been described by Alice as “our George Martin.”
Ezrin, a partner in Bigger Picture, a Nashville based company, has been instrumental in contributing to the success of numerous artists including country music sensation Zac Brown Band, remarked, “I am delighted to be back in business with Alice Cooper and Shep Gordon’s Alive Enterprises and our whole company is over the moon about this collaboration. This is not a record deal but rather a partnership that involves virtually all aspects of Alice’s ever-expanding universe. And it’s a reunion with the first artist I ever produced and the first great manager I ever worked with. I couldn’t be happier.”
Bigger Picture will contribute to strategy, staging, special products, theatrical projects as well as the production, promotion and distribution of future Alice Cooper releases. The company will utilize its distribution agreement with Warner Music Group when the new Alice Cooper album, projected for release early next year, and other recorded product launches. A tour themed to tie in with the album, the concept of which is being kept under wraps for the moment, is being planned in support of the release.
Ezrin’s career has seen him work with some of the most enduring names in music including Pink Floyd, KISS, Peter Gabriel, Jane’s Addiction, Lou Reed, Deftones and scores of others but traces its earliest successes to his association with Alice Cooper, the band and the man.
Alice Cooper remarked, “It feels great to be working with Bob again and the entire Bigger Picture team have been tremendously supportive. Lightning has struck more than once in the past with Bob’s involvement so we feel great that we’re onto something really electrifying now that we’re together again. The album we’re crafting is, in some ways, a ‘shriekquel’ to what’s gone before and there’s no better guy to oversee things than Bob.”
Shep Gordon, whose Alive Enterprises has managed Alice Cooper since his professional debut called the deal with Bigger Picture “a paradigm for the modern music business.” He commented, “We’re working with Bob not just on a brilliant new Alice Cooper album but in building upon the great strides Alice’s career has taken recently.” He cited Nights With Alice Cooper, the internationally syndicated daily radio show that Alice hosts over a network syndicated through United Stations, the Gruesome Twosome tour that has seen Alice Cooper and acolyte Rob Zombie share bills throughout North America as well as an upcoming Alice Cooper arena tour. He also noted that “The Coop” would be headlining a string of festival dates this summer in France, Germany, Belgium, the UK, and Scandinavia. “Awareness and appreciation for Alice is at an all-time high these days,” he remarked. “Bigger Picture is getting in not on the ground floor but as the elevator is zooming to the top and they’re efforts will, doubtless make this a much faster ride.”

Today, “Hoodoo” will be officially released in the United States and the response from the press has been overwhelmingly positive.
Vocalist Marc Storace worked marathon hours for the last 2 weeks as well as this week to accommodate the US media. The phone lines are smoking across the Atlantic between Switzerland and America in order to respond to all the requests for phone interviews.
Marc was supposed to do an interview for the “Eddie Trunk Radio Show” in New York this coming Friday. Due to the untimely death of rock icon Ronnie James Dio and the planned public memorial service this coming Sunday, May 30th in Los Angeles and open to the public to celebrate the life and music of Ronnie James Dio, Eddie had to postpone said interview for the near future. When the news first broke that Ronnie had passed on May 16th, Marc had been asked by many to comment on his passing. In a conversation with Jason Coldiron for CWG Magazine / Metal Assault, Marc paid tribute to the rock icon in a touching way, extending his and the band’s condolences to Dio’s wife Wendy and their family. This interview has been picked up by various other magazines and can be seen/heard on YouTube as well.
To hear Marc’s tribute to Dio, listen to the clip below.
Marc actually auditioned at one time for Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow prior to joining Krokus and eventually Dio became Rainbow’s vocalist.

Here is what some of the US critics had to say about “Hoodoo”:
“Balls out Rock-n-Roll the way it should be played. “– Loud Reviews
“Hoodoo has, in fact, achieved the difficult task of preserving the true Krokus vibe while sounding fresh and vibrant against the present-day hard-rock landscape – in short, it has brought the past into the present” –Heavy Metal Hog
“Solid, straight up, in your face rock n roll” – Metal Pub
“Do not resist the “hoodoo spell”, let it get under your skin and enjoy the magic ride!” – Hard Rock Hideout
“Hoodoo is yet another excellent album from a classic hard rock/metal band pumping blood back into what has become a stagnant genre over the last 20 years” – Mojo Radio
“Krokus has taken that shot and created an album that is on par with some of their best work. I would rank HOODOO right up there with the classic albums of the 1980-1984 era and I am positive that this record will be one of my top albums of 2010” – Heavy Metal Addiction
“Hoodoo is chock full of well worn, rockers that at once, rehash the past and refresh the legacy” – Hails & Horns
“The new album fits right in with Krokus masterpieces like Metal Rendez-Vous, One Vice At A Time and Headhunter right from the opening guitar of the CD opener”—The Examiner
“Krokus Bring An All Out Rock Assault With “Hoodoo” – Revolver Blips
“This is easily one of the best albums I’ve heard so far this year. It rocks from beginning to end. The sounds are full of energy and the band is fired up” – Metal Excess
“Hoodoo is proof that Krokus is simply one of the best Hard Rock bands ever, and, that they aren’t stopping any time soon” – Hard Rock Haven
“Krokus has chosen the perfect time to get back into the game. Hoodoo fits nicely next to their classic albums of yesteryear. While Swiss cheese may come with holes in it, Hoodoo has none; this is a complete album, start to finish” – Classic Rock Revisited

Frontiers Records will release on July 2nd in Europe and July 27th in the USA “Round Trip”, the debut album from Tony Harnell & The Mercury Train. This is a very special record: a stripped down, reinvented retrospective of Tony Harnell’s past classics originally recorded with his previous bands TNT, Westworld and Starbreaker, with one brand new song “Anywhere But Here” recorded especially for this release.
The idea of re-recording some repertoire classics came about after Tony performed some low key shows in New York in late 2008, with some talented and accomplished musicians that were not part of the Metal/Hard Rock scene. The desire was to breathe new life into the songs with new arrangements, key changes and added parts, it’s like listening to songs you know in a whole new way.
Frontiers Records President, Serafino Perugino liked the concept and in Harnell’s own words “The idea was originally based on it being the usual cliché “acoustic” album. Well, for us hard rockers that usually means simply playing the songs pretty much as they were but with acoustic guitars. That’s not exactly what I had in mind. If I was going to do this I was going to have some fun. I wanted to strip things down and see what would happen when musicians outside the hard rock community played my songs. That intrigued me. So, I gave all the guys the original album versions and then pretty much gave them carte blanche to reinterpret the songs. That meant key changes (cause you can’t sing like a banshee when you strip things down, sounds silly), chord changes and even arrangement changes if the mood hit. I also wanted a semi-live vibe. What we ended up with is an album that honors the original songs with a little added spice, color, and above all…fun”.
At the end of 2008 Tony and the other musicians entered the studio for a marathon two-day recording session that was supposed to lead into a whirlwind mixing session and an immediate release. But immediately after the session Tony hit some rather intense personal bumps in the road and production stopped. Months later the album was quickly completed.
“Recording this album was an extremely cathartic experience, allowing me to gently close the door to the past with love and gratitude and regain the pride I rightly deserve to have for these songs and for the years of my life I gave to the various periods when they were written” continues Tony. “This is in no way meant to erase, dismiss or compete with the incredible original recordings of these songs. This is just a little fun reinvention, a way to leave the past behind on my own terms. These are your songs as much as they are mine, some of you, like me, have all kinds of memories attached to them. My lyrics were, are and always will be filled with my experiences, struggles, hopes and dreams and my observations of the world around me. Hopefully you’ll listen to these songs in a new way and hear them with new ears. I know I have”.
“Round Trip” final tracklisting includes:
Somebody Told You; Intuition; Month Of Sundays; Lonely Nights; Shame; Northern Lights; Down To The River To Pray; Satellite; 10K Lovers; Uninvited; Ready To Fly; When I’m Away*; Song For Dianne; Anywhere But Here.

DoomDogs – Debut Album Is A Stoner & Doom Metal Invasion From Sweden!
DoomDogs – Watch out, look behind you… it’s a Stoner & Doom Metal charge coming straight at you… and their name is DoomDogs! Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, these four Metal musicians are crunching and thumping their way into many a Metalhead’s heart… including mine. DoomDogs are not fashion conscious about their brand of Metal… it’s Doom shaking Metal hands with Stoner – thy Metal will be done. Released on April 20, 2010, on High Roller Records, “DoomDogs” is a must own album this year and I shall tell you why!
“Fight The Greed” is a Doom epic, laced with all the Stoner thickness that I could ever wish for. At over eight minutes long, listening to this song is a lesson in dark, doomified Metal therapy. The tempo trudges along at a Metal snails pace, a sliver hint of some Sludge Metal happening here too. Lead vocalist GG sounds extremely determined, not about to hold out the olive branch to the mainstream either… instead he sounds like he is leading his troops on a journey to take over the continents with DoomDogs Metal gospel. Hey, my Metal front door is open to DoomDogs brand of Doom & Stoner and I’m an eager enlister into their fold.
“Dogs Of Doom” steps up the Metal tempo, with shades of early Motorhead, just as any and all of the press releases have been reporting. My opinion is simple, if you want to have a heavy influence within the framework of your Metal brand in 2010, then Motorhead is one damn good influential choice indeed. “Dogs Of Doom” embellishes a surprisingly melodic flair with its guitar leads and riffs, courtesy of Christer. This is a guitarist that should make living legend Tony Iommi (of Black Sabbath) blush with old school pride.
“Calling” takes no Metal prisoners with its angst ridden vocals from GG, the rhythm section crunches and obliterates any outside white noise that may have the audacity to interfere, while this song is being played loud. “Calling” is fundamentally a thunderous example of just how to establish an onslaught of Doom and Stoner Metal upon one’s ears. Patrik on bass plays as if his fingertips are being severed right off… oh, the fabulous sensory sound of quality Doom! Christer invades “Calling” with his blistering guitar licks, making this song all the more lean, dark and mean.
Nanne on drums makes his presence very known throughout DoomDogs debut album, only he sounds much more invigorated on “I’m Sure”, where he flourishes with bombastic beats that rhythmically stop my senses in their Metal tracks. The groove infliction that “I’m Sure” delivers is to be blamed on Nanne and Patrik on bass, how dare they play so good?!
“The Game” continues on with DoomDogs mixture of ear shocking Doom riffs and leads from Christer, while the undulation of grooves keep rolling in like runaway wrecking balls down a slick mountain slope. I don’t need no Doom doctor! Keep the Metal launching pad clear for DoomDogs… they are striking out once again on “Shout”. The old school guitar nod from Christer shall make any 1970’s Heavy Metal aficionado overcome with Stoner bliss. Christer is set loose on “Shout” and his guitar solo could very well make your surroundings shake and tremble if this song is played at maximum volume… as it should be played.
There is no time for kidding around when it comes to establishing yourself as a legitimate Metal band, regardless of genre. DoomDogs are NOT kidding around here. If you were to see an enticing wad of cash, without no known ownership attached to it, laying in the street, would you pick it up? Of course you would. DoomDogs is this wad of cash, only they are not laying in the street… they are embarking on making themselves known to the world of Metal, that they have taken ownership of their brand of Doom and Stoner Metal. This is one heavy band that you should “pick up” and get your ears adjusted to very soon… otherwise you just might find yourself being behind the Metal eight ball, in a spell of dizzying embarrassment.
You can pick up the new CD from the DoomDogs at this link.

Police say metal band Slipknot bassist Paul Gray has been found dead in an Iowa hotel room.
Police say a hotel employee found the 38-year-old Gray dead Monday in a room at the Town Plaza Hotel in Urbandale, a suburb of Des Moines. Foul play isn’t suspected. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday.
A person who answered the phone at the band’s record company, Roadrunner Records, declined comment. Most of the band’s members grew up in the Des Moines area.
Slipknot’s self-titled debut in 1999 sold more than a million copies.
Known for its grotesque masks, the band won a Grammy in 2006 for best metal performance for the song “Before I Forget.” Concert industry trade publication Pollstar ranked Slipknot 18th in its Top 20 Concert Tours list in 2009.
HRH: This is terrible news. Paul Gray was way too young to pass on so soon. He will be greatly missed by the legion of Slipknot and heavy metal fans across the world. Our condolences to the Gray family, friends & bandmates. Rest in Peace #2!
