We can’t think of a better partner to do it with than Jägermeister.” Guitarist Keith Nelson adds, “This is the first time we’re really going to be able to celebrate the theme of our album, All Night Long, on the road. It’s going to be loud and sweaty, just the way we like it.”
“Hello all fellow Hellions!!! I am so pumped for our upcoming tour of the USA! That’s right; every night is gonna be a Friday night with Buckcherry, HELLYEAH, ALL THAT REMAINS and The Damned Things. Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release in Europe of JOHN WAITE’s new studio album entitled Rough & Tumble on January 21st, 2011.
Waite’s anticipated new release follows 2007’s Downtown…Journey of Heart and shows a new and fresh side of the British singer/songwriter’s creative output. Part of the album was recorded in Nashville. The record wrapped with a spirited studio session in Los Angeles with the members of his touring band.
Waite says of Rough & Tumble: “As much as I feel the release of the live album, In Real Time, last May was a defining moment and as much as I have enjoyed playing those songs, I consider this album a new beginning. I approached this project with an entirely different ambition musically than I’ve had in the past. It’s the first record I’ve made that I think is made up of singles. All 12 tracks are contenders. They’re all alive in their own way. I’m not really sure what the energy is behind the songs, but there is a real kind of velocity in the album where we just picked up speed and kept going. We just wanted to play and win.”
A good portion of Rough & Tumble was written and produced in a sweet pocket of creativity enjoyed over the past year and a half with Matchbox Twenty lead guitarist/songwriter Kyle Cook, who Waite met through a mutual friend. “It’s pretty much extraordinary,” Waite says about the material he created for the new album. “It’s not like what people would expect from me. It’s a step to the left. There’s a rock imprint on the music and a melodic presence, but it’s just shifted gears. It’s an extreme record. It has an identity and a philosophy of its own, which is really fresh for me.”
The Waite/Cook collaboration has proved to be nothing short of phenomenal, as evidenced by songs like “Evil” (a thumping rocker-meets-dance-club tour de force), “Better Off Gone” (a hook-laced better-off-on-the-open-road anthem), the deep groove-laden “Love’s Goin’ Out of Style” and the soaring magic ballad “If You Ever Get Lonely”. “I’m not saying it’s high art, but genuinely speaking, it’s fantastic for me,” Waite says, reflecting on his new music. “I certainly am interested in spending the rest of my life doing something creative rather than just living in the past”.
On Rough & Tumble, Waite also managed to keep the rougher live rock edge that shines through on In Real Time alive and well. The no-holds-barred, riff-ready title track and the driving renditions of “Sweet Rhode Island Red” (a Tina Turner number) and “Mr. Wonderful” (a new take on a hidden gem originally included on his debut solo album, Ignition) are set to shake heads during the next tour. The melodies of the amazing “Shadows of Love” are yet another highlight of Waite’s new superbly varied and interesting musical statement.
Rough & Tumble final track listing includes:
Rough & Tumble, Shadows of Love, Evil, If You Ever Get Lonely, Skyward, Sweet Rhode Island Red, Love’s Goin’ Out of Style; Better Off Gone, Further The Sky, Peace of Mind, Mr. Wonderful, Hanging Tree.
The songs “Shadows of Love” and “If You Ever Get Lonely” can be listened to in full exclusively on the Frontiers Web Radio. Tune in at: www.frontiers.it/webradio

It’s been years since Nelson has released any new material and even longer since they’ve had a radio hit (1991 to be precise). So, why would the band think that after all this time, they would be able to release a brand new album that fans would find relevant and want to add to their music collection? The answer is simple. Nelson still has talent. They proved that with their new release, Lightning Strikes Twice (due out in February in the US, available now in Europe). Lightning Strikes Twice is the perfect complement to After The Rain, even though it is several years (and several albums) removed from the Nelson debut.
Matthew and Gunnar Nelson are still a talented pair of twins with their father’s (Ricky Nelson) blessed ability with the gift of music. After several years away from the studio, the twins decided that it was time to record some new material and release it to the public. Whether they’ve been sitting on this material for years, or recently wrote it with a new album in mind is hard to tell, but one thing’s for certain – the material is excellent.
Officially billed as the sequel to 1990’s After The Rain, Lightning Strikes Twice is a true return to that era of good time, happy, rock and roll. It’s a return to a style of music that didn’t take itself too seriously and only cared about having a music party with a great groove. Lightning Strikes Twice has accomplished this feat with relative ease. Both Matthew and Gunnar sound incredible. Their voices have not aged over the years and there is no hint that either of them lost their ability behind the microphone.
Gunnar’s talent with the guitar is still fascinating. The solos on Lightning Strikes Twice are rich and deep, and while the basic structure of the songs can sometimes be “cheesy,” it’s that kind of corny that we are looking for to rescue us from the layered, over thought, overly produced hard rock of today. Gunnar and his guitar bring it back to the simplicity of yesteryear.
Thematically, Lightning Strikes Twice builds on the similar ground that produced Nelson’s chart topping debut album. Broken hearts, lots of parties, and the chivalrous, “boy rescues girl from bad relationship” are all present and accounting for. Sappy, romantic lines textured with high wailing guitar solos drench this record throughout. Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy wants girl in the worst way, boy doesn’t know how to tell girl he loves her… the list goes on and on. If you enjoyed (or still enjoy) After The Rain, then you are going to love Lightning Strikes Twice.
While the album is not groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, Lightning Strikes Twice is more about the fun factor. If you want to revisit the late 80s/early 90s without having to get nostalgic or find your own flux capacitor, listening to Lightning Strikes Twice is the best way to do it. Chock full of nothing but fun and happiness (even on the sad songs), this is a terrific album that you should get your hands on.
