Rat Pak Records set to release sophomore album “Lords Of The Edge” from Metal Church singer Ronny Munroe produced by Stu Marshall (Empires Of Eden).
Classic power metal is still alive and well! Ronny Munroe’s (voice of Metal Church) new CD Lords Of The Edge is hands down his finest work to date. Featuring the guitar mastery of Stu Marshall (Empires of Eden), Chris Caffery (TSO/Savatage), and Michael Wilton (Queensryche), Lords Of The Edge is a true metal offering that delivers an onslaught of fist-pumping, guitar-driven heavy metal.
Lords Of The Edge gives us 12 new solid tracks of melodic metal that can only be described as one of those rare albums that captures the magic of the classic metal era. “We wanted to create something that was totally new, but at the same time, true metal fans could hear everything that we were influenced by growing up in the classic metal era,” says Ronny on the recording of the new CD. “Lords Of The Edge sounds a little bit like what would happen if you put Metal Church’s Light in the Dark CD into a blender with Queensryche’s first EP and Judas Priest’s Painkiller, then mixed it with some present day themes and a shot of pure adrenaline.”
The opening tracks, “Just Breathe” and “Full Circle” offer fast and furious guitar assaults with high energy vocals, while tracks like “The Vision” and “Touched By A Demon” take on a more haunting melodic approach that set up the listener for the gritty, power-metal influenced tracks like “Let Them Feed” and “Rock And A Hard Place.”
With 12 strong tracks on this CD, it is a fantastic offering that deserves to be in every metal fan’s music collection!

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of “Alloy”, the anticipated debut album from TRILLIUM the new Metal Project masterminded by American Singer Songwriter Amanda Somerville on November 4th in Europe and November 1st in North America.
“Alloy” is an album that’s charged with emotion and exploration and a very personal statement from Amanda and certainly the listener can enjoy very different musical atmospheres on the album “Since I’m an eclectic and diverse person and musician, that certainly comes out in this album” says Amanda. “I think that the diversity is what is going to set this album apart from other stuff that’s out there right now. It’s got big choruses and epic symphonic hits, guitar solos you could imagine being played on a mountain top with an aerial camera view, but it’s also got a lot of soul added to the raise-your-fists-in-the-air-and-make-a-mean-face vibe”.
Musically TRILLIUM melts Rock and Metal in a new, interesting and different way from anything Amanda has worked on so far. “Alloy” is also graced with the talents of several musicians with whom Amanda had the honor of working in the past. Sander Gommans (ex AFTER FOREVER, HDK) and Sascha Paeth (KAMELOT, AVANTASIA, EPICA, AFTER FOREVER etc) were the main songwriters together with the American singer on this album. They have brought a lot to the project and have certainly allowed the sound to be a lot richer and stronger.
“Sander is all around an awesome songwriter and guitar player, and he’s especially good at coming up with riffs and movements of a song, while Sascha is a fantastic producer who can play any instrument there is – and play the hell out of it – and his sense of songwriting is really strong!” tells Amanda.
Other contributing musicians include Miro Rodenberg who did all of the orchestral and keyboard arrangements, Robert Hunecke on drums, Olaf Reitmeier on acoustic guitar, Simon Oberender on keyboards (and mastering). But more surprises are on this record: “Working with Mat Sinner on KISKE-SOMERVILLE established a solid professional relationship and I also found a good friend in him” says Amanda. “We co-wrote “Love Is An Illusion” together for this album and it was a pleasure working with him once again!”
And last, but in no way least, Jorn Lande has lent his epic voice to the song “Scream It.” Ms. Somerville tells the story: “I actually wrote that song with Jorn in mind not for his status in the scene, but because I absolutely love his voice, he’s a wonderful friend of mine through working together on Avantasia and he was the perfect “actor” to play the character in the song. And he nailed it!”
With touring plans in Europe in the first quarter of 2012 and a rousing excitement surrounding Trillium, you can bet the world is finally ready to enjoy the talents of one of the most interesting, creative and gifted singers and songwriters of today’s entire Rock scene.
“Alloy” will be exclusively released in a lavish digipak cd edition and will include the following songs:
While a videoclip for the song “Coward” is in the works, you can now enjoy a video presentation of the album following this link:www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7KQITdzezc

WINNERS WILL BE PART OF THE QUEEN EXTRAVAGANZA LIVE TOUR
LAUNCHING IN 2012
AUDITIONS BEGIN SEPTEMBER 19
As part of this year’s celebration of Queen’s 40th anniversary, Queen drummer/songwriter/singer Roger Taylor is launching a North American talent search that will offer “s**t hot vocalists and musicians” the opportunity to star in the Queen Extravaganza Live Tour. Taylor will endeavour to assemble the most talented band to perform Queen’s music, outside of Queen themselves, of course, to carry on the celebration. Auditions begin September 19th at www.queenextravaganza.com and the tour, booked by powerhouse agency CAA, launches in 2012.
Auditions are open to vocalists, guitarists, drummers, bass players and keyboard players.
“The Queen Extravaganza will not be a traditional tribute show,” says Taylor. “It’s a brand-new show specially designed to enable fans to celebrate the music of Queen in a heart-stopping event.”
The Queen Extravaganza will bring the glorious music and live experience of Queen to a new generation of fans in cities across the US in 2012.
“It’s going to be spectacular” says Taylor. “It’s going to be very visual, there are going to be some shocks and some tremendous surprises. It will be a rock celebration in the royal tradition. ”
Beginning September 19, Taylor will launch a North American talent search via www.queenextravaganza.com to find players for a 5-piece band and three vocalists who will carry the tour. Taylor is fully hands-on in the creation of The Extravaganza, taking the role of producer and music director.
Coming on board to ensure the touring show will match the design and excitement of Queen at its best will be such rock tour heavyweights as stage designer Mark Fisher (U2, AC/DC, Muse, The Rolling Stones, Cirque de Soleil) and lighting designer Rob Sinclair (Adele, Vampire Weekend, Goldfrapp, Peter Gabriel), and for the auditions, Roger Taylor and a panel of renowned musicians.
The audition process involves two video audition rounds to be judged by both a panel of appointed judges and the public. Taylor will be present to judge the final audition round, which will be held live in Los Angeles in early December. In addition, VEVO, the world’s leading music video and entertainment platform, will unveil exclusive content from each audition round as well as and The Queen Extravaganza finals.
In a special tribute, VEVO will also showcase classic Queen videos including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” “We Will Rock You,” “Under Pressure,” “We Are The Champions,” Fat Bottomed Girls,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “You’re My Best Friend” across their platform over the next few weeks.
Taylor, a man whose drum skills and songwriting talents have contributed to over 300 million record sales and over 700 live concerts in every part of the world, says: “There are great musicians everywhere, and this is a really exciting challenge for us to try and unearth some of those musicians from the US.”

Together with band mates Brian May, John Deacon and the unforgettable Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor brought a new dimension to live music. The band has released a total of 18 chart-topping albums and 18 #1 singles, while selling more than 300 million albums worldwide, making them one of the biggest rock acts of all time. They’ve received seven Ivor Novello awards in the U.K., were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, the UK Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and even received their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in October 2002.
As the centerpiece in the 40th anniversary celebration, Queen’s entire 15-album studio catalog is being reissued in a series of deluxe editions. Every note is being tweaked, every piece of artwork is being cleaned, freshened up and resourced, wherever necessary, with the legendary Bob Ludwig doing the remastering, working from the original source material. The first installment, comprised of the first five LPs (QUEEN, QUEEN II, SHEER HEART ATTACK, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, A DAY AT THE RACES) was released May 17, the second installment (NEWS OF THE WORLD, JAZZ, THE GAME, FLASH GORDON, HOT SPACE) was just released on September 13 and the final installment is set to come out later this year.
September 5th would have been legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday. To mark the occasion, Queen streamed their historic 1986 concert Queen Live At Wembley Stadium for 48 hours on YouTube. Stars such as Katy Perry, members of Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance took to YouTube to present video tribute to Mercury. The entire two day celebration garnered over 4 million views.
Google also paid tribute by posting worldwide a rare and extraordinary tribute to Freddie Mercury with a very special Google doodle on its homepage. The animated Google doodle was created to celebrate the life and talents of the legendary Queen frontman. The worldwide tribute from Google is something that doesn’t happen very often. Google has previously run video doodles for other legendary entertainers including John Lennon.
An American band and based in California, TALON was born from the ashes of VOXEN – a band that achieved international success with their release “Sacrifice”, which included a track that was used in the major motion picture “Outbreak” starring Dustin Hoffman.
Soon after, a new vision was brought forward with the recruitment of Michael O’Mara (Joshua Perahia, EFX) and demos were soon recorded and then the band signed on with Now and Then/Frontiers Records which culminated with the release of their self-titled debut. The CD was produced by Mikey Davis (KISS, W.A.S.P., Slaughter). Upon release, the CD was wildly praised and was on countless top-10 lists for the year. Soon followed major live shows, including The Gods Festival in the U.K. Talon also had the privilege of being Stan Bush’s backing band at The Gods Festival and the subsequent DVD release. After a break of working on individual projects, Talon recorded new demos and ultimately signed with Kivel Records and then recorded their next release “Fallen Angels”. With a closer vibe to an AOR feel, New York native Chandler Mogel was brought on board and more live shows – including Firefest 5 – were performed. “Fallen Angels” was a huge success and brought Talon into the forefront of the Melodic Rock field.
Upon mutual agreement, Chandler Mogel went on to front the Greece outfit Outloud and with a new group of songs, Talon were on a quest to create the ultimate album and added some serious quality to the band – Shawn Pelata (Line of Fire) and Eric Ragno (China Blue, Takara, etc.). Now – the band have just signed to Escape Music for the release of this classic slab of Melodic Rock – “III” – which is scheduled for release in November, 2011!
Talon “III” recently completed mixing at The Recovery Room by Ty Sims (Far Cry, Tango Down) and is full of classic hard rock songs and ballads that the band describes as “really a return to the sound, vibe and energy of our debut S/T release”. “This latest CD was a total labour of love and we all feel this will be our strongest release to date! We pulled out all the stops and really think the results speak for themselves and is an excellent follow-up to our recent ‘Fallen Angels’ release”. In addition, premiere vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Journey, Talisman, JSS) has a guest appearance on the album with some amazing lead vocals on the hard-driving track “Take You All The Way”! The best musicians contributed their best talents to help create an outstanding release !

Fans of Washington, DC-area metallers A SOUND OF THUNDER have successfully funded the band’s Kickstarter campaign for the recording of their third-full length album Time’s Arrow. The band have begun work on Time’s Arrow at Assembly Line Studios with producer Kevin “131” Gutierrez (Shinedown, While Heaven Wept, Raven). With the same band line-up, producer and studio that created 2012’s acclaimed Out of the Darkness (Nightmare Records), Time’s Arrow features 11 new songs combining rousing and catchy traditional metal with crushing modern production. The album also features a guest appearance by Blaze Bayley performing a duet with vocalist Nina Osegueda. Time’s Arrow will release in early 2013.
The Kickstarter campaign began on August 20th with a fundraising goal of $8,000, intended to fund the recording of TIME’S ARROW. Supporters gain access to numerous rewards, including downloads, CDs, t-shirts, a limited box set edition of TIME’S ARROW, and unique and rare items from the band. Supporters are also offered the chance to sing background vocals on TIME’S ARROW, appear in the band’s next music video, and have music written specifically for them. The $8,000 fundraising goal was met and surpassed with several days remaining on the campaign, which ends on Wednesday, September 19th at 11:00 AM EST.
“We’re all so proud and thankful to have such enthusiastic and generous fans,” said Osegueda. “I hope they will enjoy the album and EP…we couldn’t have done it without them.”
In addition to Time’s Arrow, A SOUND OF THUNDER has announced a second new release, the Queen of Hell EP, available exclusively as a Kicstarter reward and due out in November. Also recorded at Assembly Line Studios with producer Kevin “131” Gutierrez, the Queen of Hell EP contains four new tracks, including a guest appearance by Veronica Freeman (Benedictum), and a cover of Black Sabbath‘s “Trashed”.
A preview of the EP can be found here.
The cover art for Queen of Hell can be seen below. “We’ve always wanted to do an homage to classic swords & sorcery themed metal album covers,” says lead vocalist Nina Osegueda. “As you can see, we’ve gone horns up with the Queen of Hell art…I finally have the throne of skulls I’ve always wanted!” The cover art was provided by Serbian artist Dušan Marković.

Gary Moore is one of many musicians who was taken from us far too soon. When Gary Moore took the stage at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival last year, no one on Earth knew it would be his final performance there.
On the soon to be released CD ( Will be released September 20th, 2011) Live at Montreux 2010, Gary Moore puts on a one of a kind performance that no Gary Moore fan can afford to miss. In this set are three new songs, “Days of Heroes”, “Where are You Now” and “Oh Wild One” that Moore intended to record for an up and coming rock album. Live at Montreux is the only place where you will get to hear the new tunes. In my opinion, it is some of Gary’s strongest material in recent years, and while it is disappointing that he never got the chance to record these on a studio CD, I am grateful to hear them performed in a live setting.
The rest of the set on this CD is very good as well. You can’t go wrong with such Gary Moore classics like “Over The Hills and Far Away” and “Johnny Boy”. I have loved these songs since I first heard them way back in 1987, when I picked up the Wild Frontier album.
Gary Moore’s legacy will continue to live on through the incredible music he has left us. I am grateful to have such a cool live CD to close out the career of one of the best rock and blues guitarists of all time.
You can pick up your copy of Live at Montreux 2010 on CD at this link. Don’t miss it!

Swedish Metallers EVERGREY are officially kicking off their North American tour today in Atlanta, GA as part of the Prog Power Festival. Following their Prog Power performance EVERGREY will be criss-crossing North America through October 12th with support coming from The Abscense, Sabaton, and Powerglove.
Drummer Hans Van Dahl is ready to take on North America:
“Man, It´s been quite a while since EVERGREY polluted the North American ears last time! Now we´re out with a new record called “GLORIOUS COLLISION” and all I can tell you that we´re super psyched to crush every venue on this NORTH-AMERICAN COLLISION tour down to the ground”
Occasionally a musician has to take a step back into the past to develop artistically. This was the case when recording the new record “Glorious Collision”. Tom Englund, guitarist and vocalist of Swedish rock group EVERGREY, took this risk and reorganised his artistic environment. “The most recent EVERGREY line-up had reached a point where we no longer had fun as a group,” he confesses, adding: “So we went our separate ways to save our friendship. There were no angry words, and we’re still friends privately.”
Naturally, the decision to break up wasn’t easy for these long-standing friends, especially for Englund and his remaining keyboardist, Rikard Zander, for whom a continuation of EVERGREY was never called into question. Yet they both had to face a new challenge: “In the beginning, we weren’t sure whether we’d be able to write a new album without the wealth of experience that the previous line-up brought in. But after Rikard and I had composed a full three numbers during the first week, we felt that was a real coup.”
Listeners will feel this positive energy throughout “Glorious Collision”, the band’s eighth studio album. “This may sound like a contradiction in view of our personnel situation”, said Tom, “but Rikard and I have allowed more influences on “Glorious Collision”than ever before. Some elements on “Glorious Collision” are classic rock, based on a metal format; sometimes the tracks are quiet and haunting, sometimes wild, demanding and gripping.”

Scandinavia’s finest secret THE MAGNIFICENT is unleashed to the unsuspecting Melodic Rock crowd !
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of the self-titled debut album from THE MAGNIFICENT on November 4th in Europe and November 1st in North America.
With Scandinavia becoming more and more the promised land for quality Melodic Rock bands, it was just natural that Frontiers would dig deep in the scene to find and expose the best new talents around. Then imagine if two of the most gifted guys from the Prog Metal scene in two different Scandinavian countries decided to join forces in a monumental new band project. The result should be nothing but stunning right? Then get this: Circus Maximus singer extraordinaire Michael Eriksen from Norway and Finnish producer/guitarist Torsti Spoof (of Leverage fame) have decided to join forces together in a new Melodic Rock band aptly called The Magnificent.
With the help of musicians including Rolf Pilve on drums, Sami Norbacka on bass and Jukka Karinen on keyboards, The Magnificent offer a monster Melodic Rock album, a record melting the contemporary sound of Brother Firetribe and classic Europe, with obvious hints to the fathers of the genre: Journey and Foreigner.
Songwriting contributions also come from Pekka Heino (Brother Firetribe, Leverage), Tomppa Nikulainen (Brother Firetribe), Tuomas Heikkinen (Leverage), Mats Haugen (Circus Maximus), Kimmo Blom (Urban Tale) and others.
Torsti Spoof said: “A lot of my musical influences come from the 80`s and I always wanted to make an album in that spirit. Now the dream has came true! This one was truly a joyride. Great musicians, songwriters and an AMAZING Michael Eriksen! I think together we`ve made a perfect blend of the old school songwriting with a big up to date sound”
Michael Eriksen added “I grew up in the 80`s and with this album the 80`s are BACK ! Working together with Torsti has been a privilege and I believe together we have created a rock album that will apply to all fans of rock music out there. So turn up the volume and enjoy!”
The resulting debut album oozes class, stunning melodies and fabulous arrangements. Eriksen’s powerful vocals perfectly complement the spectacular musical landscape created by Spoof and his cohorts. “The Magnificent” is an album that screams for the attention of all Melodic Rock fans.
“The Magnificent” includes the following tracks:

I have been meaning to check out the band Status Quo for years. The thing I love about music, and Hard Rock Hideout is we are always discovering new bands. Occasionally, we discover a few of the older ones too. I embarrassed to say that Quid Pro Quo is the first release I have checked out from Status Quo. With 29 albums and over 4 decades of music under their belt, I have a lot of catching up to do!
Quid Pro Quo’s opening number “Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ You” is a fun number that reminds me a of a cross between Cheap Trick and the Doobie Brothers. It is a upbeat tune, and does a good job to set the mood for the songs to come. In fact, if you like the opening numbers, “Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ You” and “Two Way Traffic” (See video below), you will have a pretty good idea as to what to expect with Quid Pro Quo. This album is packed full of upbeat rockers, and has a very uplifting feel to it. The album could have used a little more song variety to break up the pace, but it is a highly enjoyable album overall.
Some of favorite songs on Quid Pro Quo include “Two Way Traffic”, “Let’s Rock”, “Leave a Little Light On”, “The Winner” and “My Old Ways”. I also enjoyed Status Quo’s re-recorded cover of “In the Army Now”. This was a good tune to close the album out with.
Is Quid Pro Quo worth checking out? Yes, absolutely!!! My only regret is that I haven’t been exposed to Status Quo’s kick ass brand of boogie rock sooner.

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of MECCA’s anticipated second album Undeniable on November 4th in Europe and January 10th 2012 in North America.
Six years in the making Undeniable is the culmination of hard work, blood, sweat and tears. Rewind to 2002: the Melodic Rock community is taken by storm by the debut album of a new band named Mecca. Formed by vocalist Joe Vana, he enlisted, among others, the services of former Toto members David Hungate (bass) and Fergie Frederiksen on vocals and close friend and former Survivor founding member Jim Peterik, who contributed masterfully to the songwriting and production of the album.
Mecca created a sonic treasure bringing the energy to drive diamond hard rockers and the finesse to create lush power ballads, all with the texture that, until now, only super-groups such as Journey, Toto or Foreigner could provide. Amazing press responses blessed the album’s release and Joe Vana soon started putting together plans for a follow up album. “I wanted a BAND sound, like the old days where all the guys played together in the room” tells Joe. “We came very close to doing just that… PLUS, I wanted an album Jim Peterik would hear and be proud that he worked so hard mentoring me for so many years. I had a challenge”.
Songwriting started in 2005 between Vana and Swedish guitarist Christian Wolff. In 2007 things really took a ground breaking turn with the songwriting masterpieces that Vana wrote with Swedish Producer/Songwriter/Guitarist Tommy Denander. Vana said: “The writing synergy between Tommy and I has been amazing, we think so much alike in terms of melody and space but sounds very different melodically than what we both have done separately, so it truly is a union of ideas…”. The musical direction soon showed that new heights in Melodic Rock music could be reached. “Since Tommy and Christian were my co-writers” continues Vana “I had parts of theirs from when we wrote the tunes that were stellar and it integrated wonderfully”.
Several problems created bumps in the road, including the death of Vana’s longtime friend and co-producer / engineer Bryan Mitchell which made the completion of the recording process extremely slow. Joe explains: “It took a lot of time to build the right team to produce with me, Mark Alano and Chuck Macak and to get the right combination of guys. I had an opportunity to hand pick a band and I was not going to ruin that! I know I was getting killed on the internet, but I needed to make sure it was ALL correct. The music had to be able to carry the melodies and the lyrical content I had written, this album had to flow correctly and I had a vision sonically I wanted as well… it was not an easy road…. and as far as the songs themselves, it is the best writing Tommy Denander and Christian Wolff have done. They were SO EASY to write with and we make a GREAT team!”.
Vana enlisted the talents of session masters such as Pat Mastellotto (King Crimson, Mr Mister), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), along with Denander and Wolff. His core band was also created around Rick Vitek on drums, Brian Moritz on keyboards, Wally Hustin on bass, Eric Ragno on keyboards, Mark Alano on guitar and Joe’s ace in the hole….his son Joey on guitars and backing vocals.
Fast forward to 2011. Mecca II Undeniable is finally completed and delivered. The results are breathtaking. According to Vana: “This is a thinking man’s record with a lot of Chicago AOR, Prog and a good dose of West Coast thrown in! You can listen to the album 10 times, and will hear different things each time…”. An album which perfectly melts the outstanding High-Tech AOR approach of Mr. Mister’s “Welcome to the Real World” to the commercial sheer brilliance of Toto’s “The Seventh One”. Oh and… the good news is that Mecca III is underway!
If Mecca I was born to unveil the treasures of the Melodic Rock genre to the unsuspecting public, then Mecca II Undeniable sets in stone the gospel of this music with stunning arrangements and unbelievable melodies. Mecca is now here to stay….get converted to their music!!!

Eagle Rock Entertainment has reissued one of the finest live releases from Rainbow, Live in Germany in 1976. Arguably, the most powerful of all of the Rainbow lineups, Live in Germany captures Ronnie James Dio, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Bain, Cozy Powell and Tony Carey at their finest.
Don’t let the few number of tracks in this 2 CD set keep you from picking this up. Live in Germany captures Rainbow in over 90 minutes of hard rock perfection. If you never got the chance to see Rainbow live (like myself), Live in Germany 1976 is a release you will not want to miss.
Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar playing in this concert is absolutely spectacular. You can almost hear the smoke coming off of his guitar strings. The guitar solos that Blackmore plays in this concert have to be heard to believed.
Ronnie James Dio’s vocals have never disappointed me, and his voice is outstanding in this concert.
The audio quality of this reissue is excellent. If you close your eyes, while listening to this, you almost feel like you are back in 1976, with Rainbow bringing the house down with their electric live show.
From Blackmore’s guitar wizardry, to Dio’s amazing vocals, and the outstanding musicianship of Jimmy Bain, Cozy Powell and Tony Carey, Live in Germany 1976 is one Rainbow live offering that is definitely worth catching. I highly recommend it!!

Slash is widely considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. He has received countless accolades and awards including a 2007 induction into Hollywood’s RockWalk (located in front of Guitar Center in Hollywood) alongside his idols Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. An original member of iconic rock band Guns N’ Roses, the Grammy-winning Slash helped the band create signature sounds like the guitar riff of #1 hit “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Welcome To The Jungle.” The band dominated the 1980’s and 90’s music scene selling more than 100 million albums worldwide and ushered in a decade of hard charging rock music. After leaving the band, Slash went on to critical acclaim in his personal project Slash’s Snakepit, and global success with supergroup Velvet Revolver. He has been widely sought after by the biggest musicians of all time, performing with everyone from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder to Ray Charles. Slash recently landed on the top of the charts with his first true solo album, Slash. In addition, Slash was just honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce who named him as an official selection for 2011 to receive a star on Hollywood’s iconic Walk of Fame. In February 2011, he performed at the Super Bowl XLV half time show, seen by more than 106 million people, becoming the most-watched program in U.S. television history (Nielsen Co.). Slash is currently in the studio working on his second solo album due for release in 2012.
Some things get better with age. With Vincent Furnier aka Alice Cooper (who turned 63 in February) this is truly the case. With Alice Cooper’s latest effort, Welcome 2 My Nightmare, Alice has turned in one of his most creative pieces of work yet.
Producer Bob Ezrin came up with the idea for Alice to do the sequel to Welcome to My Nightmare. I don’t know if anyone could have guessed what Alice would come up with after that. Alice Cooper brought in several of his old bandmates including Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith, Steve Hunter, and Dick Wagner, as well as a cast of many others to help create a brand new nightmare, which to my ears is one Alice Cooper’s finest works to date.
Welcome 2 My Nightmare somehow manages to recapture that classic 70’s sound of the original, without sounding dated. Welcome 2 My Nightmare incorporates the sounds of classic and hard rock, and little bit of disco. It is hard to compare it to the monsterous album Welcome to My Nightmare, which spawned such great songs like “Cold Ethyl”, “Only Women Bleed” and “Welcome to My Nightmare”. You won’t find Vincent Price (God rest his soul) narratives on Welcome 2 My Nightmare either, but you are going to find a whole bunch of new tunes that you will be sure to love.
There are several songs on Welcome 2 My Nightmare which could easily be worked in to Alice’s live set for years to come. This album is so strong that he could probably do a tour playing the entire album live. The album isn’t perfect, but it is pretty close to it. I could have lived without the auto tune effect on Alice’s vocals on the opening cut “I Am Made of You”. Luckily, this is the only song plagued by that ill-used effect. (Note: To all artists and producers of rock music, Auto Tune is NEVER ok to use in rock music; No one wants to hear that crap.) “I Am Made To You” is a pretty strong opener, and a really good song. Bob Ezrin should have known better than to use those effects in my opinion.
While Alice Cooper’s previous effort Along Came a Spider was an outstanding effort, it pales in comparison to the creative and enthusiastic offering Welcome 2 My Nightmare from the Alice Cooper and company. There are many classic moments, and too many cool tunes to mention on this CD. Some of my favorites are the catchy “Caffeine”, to the Vaudeville fun of “Last Man on Earth”, and the cool rocker “I’ll Bit Your Face Off”. I will be playing this one a ton for years to come.
Voting is now closed, throw away your unused ballots, Welcome 2 My Nightmare will be the easy choice for album of the year in 2011. Highly Recommended!
