Fame and fortune have always played a minor role in KINGDOM COME mastermind Lenny Wolf’s longstanding career. In fact, his more than 30 years as an artist have been fueled first and foremost by musical challenges and the desire to keep evolving. His credo has always been: authenticity before commercial considerations. “Naturally, nobody is happier than I am when my music is loved by as many fans as possible,” he says, “but these kinds of aspects are irrelevant when it comes to creating a new album. The only thing that matters is testing myself as an artist and embarking on new paths.” To avoid any misunderstandings: the new KINGDOM COME album Outlier presents flawless rock music with a welcome tendency towards melancholia and a gift for anthems. But: With Outlier Lenny is starting a new chapter of his diverse creative career, expertly positioning his charismatic voice between traditional rock structures and modern sound elements, which add a third dimension to this album.
“I simply felt the need to delve deep inside of me and run riot in the infinite expanse of the audio cosmos. The result is a friction of mercilessly mechanical, heartless sound collages, combined with my typical melancholy-melodious style,” Wolf explains the album’s artfully interwoven experimental approach to his sound, which never detracts from the familiar atmospheric basic mood of his songs. “A whole number of souls happen to dwell in my breast, which is why experimentation and the development of my musical existence simply belong together.” Lenny purposely takes into account that this approach may also lead to friction and requires an open mind of its listeners: “It’s of secondary importance to me whether this is clever in business terms. To me, it’s all about creating optimum varieties of sound signals which go through the ear straight into the heart. Some call it a vocation. Hallelujah.”
A vocation which is reflected in ten haunting, stirring and diverse songs. Some numbers are welcome reminders of KINGDOM COME‘sglorious past, other songs document a future-oriented direction. “I could have written a track such as ‘Let The Silence Talk’ back in 1988 during our In Your Face period, whereas listening to ‘Rough Ride Rallye’ and ‘When Colors Break The Grey’ for the first time may have you think: Oops, what’s all this about,” Lenny confesses, knowing fully well that it’s precisely those opposite poles which make Outlier a very special album. Especially since “one song by itself cannot reflect the character of a whole album. To understand this record, you have to take time and become one with those compositions, some of which are extremely diverse.”
Outlier is well worth the effort, especially in view of the album’s deep lyrical content. As ever, Lenny’s lyrics are personal snapshots straight from his soul, touching on autobiographical subjects on ‘Don’t Want You To Wait’ and documenting – for example on ‘God Does Not Sing Our Song’ and ‘Skip The Cover And Feel’ – an attitude which is as fierce as ever and deeply rooted in Lenny Wolf. He has also consciously chosen the album title in line with this: “The term Outlier suits me to a tee. It symbolises my whole personality, the musical media I work with, the story of my life.”
Outlier was recorded at Wolf’s own Hamburg studio, the Two Square Noise Factory. With the exception of the solo guitar parts contributed by Eric Förster, all instruments were recorded by the KINGDOM COME boss himself. In addition, Wolf produced, engineered, mixed and mastered his new album. “Eighteen-months of struggle and madness lie behind me, a period which saw me go through the usual alternating bath of euphoria and doubt. As an artist, you can never be quite sure just what you’ve cooked up, but I happen to be an idealist and simply have to keep embarking on new adventurous journeys. The path of predictability has never satisfied me.”
Outlier is KINGDOM COME’s first studio album featuring completely new material since the arrival of their 2009 release, Magnified. The album is bound to provoke discussion, in every respect, which is precisely the intention Lenny has with his compositions: “I never write to please anybody, I simply stretch my means of expression as a musician as far as possible. Always in the hope that others will like the result.” That certainly is one thing that Lenny needn’t worry about!
Outlier will be released worldwide through Steamhammer/SPV and will be available as CD and download in Germany on April 26th, in Europe on April 29th and in the US/Canada on May 7th!

Buckcherry‘s new Confessions CD has debuted at #20 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with 18,548 copies sold in its first week of release. The disc also enters both the Billboard Hard Music Album chart and Metal Album chart at #1, and was the best-selling new album of the week. In the digital music realm, Confessions maintained the #1 position on the iTunes Rock Album chart throughout release week. Confessions was released February 19, 2013, is Buckcherry‘s sixth studio album, and is their first U.S. release for Century Media Records.
Buckcherry‘s Josh Todd says, “Confessions is a very personal record, and one of our best — and we want to thank all our loyal fans for going out and supporting rock n’ roll!”
The songs on Confessions merge punk grit, gutter attitude, honest storytelling, and razor sharp hooks, while the lyrics are tied together by the underlying theme of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Buckcherry is currently on the road supporting Kid Rock as special guests on the Rebel Soul tour. To celebrate the release of their new album, the multi-platinum Los Angeles rock band–Josh Todd (vocals), Keith Nelson (guitar), Stevie D. (guitar), Jimmy Ashhurst (bass), Xavier Muriel (drums)–will headline three intimate hometown shows at The Viper Room in West Hollywood on March 7, 8 and 9, between legs of the Kid Rock tour.
Confessions’ first single “Gluttony” continues to build at Active Rock radio, as is evident on the sales front, where the track had its biggest week to date moving 4,831 singles on iTunes. The provocative video for “Gluttony”–directed by Billy Jayne and filmed in a North Hollywood church–can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4tf9Q83ERg.
Buckcherry continues to receive praise for Confessions. Here’s a sample of recent media accolades:
“…Confessions is Buckcherry’s strongest effort to date. Brutally honest, but also steeped in the kind of dirty and hooky riffy songwriting that has made the Los Angeles-based band a favorite among fans of old school hard rock.”
–Chris Epting, AOL Noisecreep.com, February 26, 2013
“Confessions will be recognized as one of the best records of the year…”
–Chris Arnold, HardRockHaven.net, February 19, 2013

VIP Packages for select dates will also be available starting at 10AM local venue time on Wednesday, February 27th. Visit paparoach.com/events for more details.
A2IM President, Rich Bengloff notes, “One of the true strengths of the independent music label community is that our label members are true brands, whether it be the Blues (Alligator), EDM (Ultra), Metal (Century Media), Reggae (VP), or a leading rock brand like Eleven Seven Music. I applaud Allen Kovac and his team at Eleven Seven Music for creating what we hope will be the first of many independent artist branded tours, in this case for the rock music community and its fans.”
Eleven Seven Music Founder and CEO, Allen Kovac adds, “This is an integrated marketing concept that will make it easier for branded labels to work with promoters to increase ticket sales, especially in markets that don’t have rock or alternative radio stations. The industry needs turnkey marketing opportunities to allow for the best use of new media.”
Tour headliners Papa Roach recently released their sixth studio album (their second for label home Eleven Seven Music), the tour’s namesake, THE CONNECTION. The albumwas produced by rock veteran James Michael (Sixx:A.M., Halestorm) and John Feldmann (Panic at the Disco, The Used, Escape the Fate) and has been receiving critical praise across the board. Revolver declared the album, “a fist-pumping return to form…” Papa Roach has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide. The band boasts two Grammy nominations, an MTV VMA nomination, as well as ten Top 10 rock hits, seven Top 10 alternative hits and can claim the Most Played Alternative Song of the Decade (BDS) with their breakthrough single “Last Resort.” Known for their electrifying and explosive live shows, Papa Roach has become the common denominator for some of the most successful rock tours in recent years.
New to the Eleven Seven Music roster, Escape The Fate is set to release their fourth studio album and first for their new label home, UNGRATEFUL on May 14th. Despite giving their lead single and title track away for free for 24 hours on AltPress.com, the track landed on iTunes’ rock singles chart at #2 and sold a staggering 4,500 in the first week – supporting the claim that the band’s quality of music is better than ever. The album was co-produced by John Feldmann (Panic At The Disco, The Used, Papa Roach), guitarist Monte Money and Brandon Saller (Atreyu) and mixed by Josh Wilbur (Lamb Of God, System Of A Down, Chevelle) and is poised to be one of the great standout rock albums of 2013. UNGRATEFUL features an exciting blend of soaring choruses, lyrical intensity and classic elements of alternative rock for which the band has come to be known.
Rounding out the bill are hard rockers Otherwise, who will be touring in support of their Century Media debut album, TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES. Released last year, the album features the breakout single, “Soldiers.” “Soldiers” has sold over 100,000 units to date and was a Top 20 Active Rock radio hit. Their current single, “I Don’t Apologize” is currently Top 15 at Active Rock radio.

Last week, Buckcherry released their sixth album, Confessions. Confessions was originally slated for a 2012 release, and I am glad the band didn’t rush this one out. Good things come to those who wait. You see, not only does Confessions contain some of Buckcherry’s strongest song writing to date, the band’s playing is also a step above their previous releases.
With Confessions, Buckcherry tackles the seven deadly sins. Gluttony, wrath, envy, sloth, greed, pride and lust are all represented on Buckcherry’s latest opus, and are also seven of the album’s song titles. The lyrics are based on singer Josh Todd’s childhood, and his transformation into adulthood. The lyrics are a step above the normal song writing from Buckcherry. Those looking for “Crazy Bitch” part two, won’t find it on Confessions. What you will find however are some well crafted songs that absolutely rock.
This is the first Buckcherry album that I could listen to all the way through since 15 was released. The only negative I could find with this album, is that it lacks the sing along choruses that have made so many of Buckcherry’s songs popular. It may be a different style of writing for Buckcherry, but I couldn’t find one bad song on Confessions.
With that being said, I still think this is Buckcherry’s strongest album since 15, and one that is going to get a ton of replay in 2013 and beyond. If you haven’t picked up Confessions yet, I highly recommend checking it out! The extended edition of this CD ( available at Best Buy) includes two great bonus songs, “Give ‘Em What They Want” and “When the Fire Starts” and a cool DVD as well. Don’t miss this!

This is the real heart of the thing for me – I have no ambition to be judged amongst the virtuoso guitar players out there, many of whom Doogie has worked with and is still working with on other projects. I have no illusions about where I stand next to those guys, many of whom are my heroes! I have just been lucky enough to write a lot of songs with Doogie, songs that we both really enjoy and are proud of, and then we get to play them with the great musicians in La Paz. I guess that if you believe that music is an art form, you could think of me as the guy who makes the canvas upon which others can create some magic! ‘Granite’ was a great album for us to do, but in a lot of ways we were playing music that we already knew really well. This was much more of an exploration of new territories for everyone and we all have had SUCH a blast putting it together.”
Doogie: “Chic is very driven, creatively and emotionally, and I get bored when I am not working. It therefore makes for the most wonderful combination for us to write songs together. I personally never thought that La Paz would never record another album. I knew we had at least another one in us. It’s a natural thing we have. Chic knows, I know, and together we both know that between us we can write a song or two. Then when you add in the solid foundation of Big Al and Wee Paul it’s all there. Of course ‘Posh Boy’ Andy has his part to play on the keyboards to make it really become La Paz. Chic’s songs for this album have ‘traditional’ La Paz influences but we are older and more travelled and his ideas outwit the great traditions of what La Paz should sound like, shines a new light on the music we write. It was challenging for us both to write it, but we knew what we needed. For some people, a few of the songs may be challenging and unexpected, both musically and lyrically. But that’s the joy of La Paz. We came from nothing and we may return to nothing but the road we ventured on has been so satisfying and creative. We may even send each other Christmas cards this year! I think we have made ourselves proud with this record. ‘Granite ‘ was easier as it was taking old ideas and revamping them. Then we added some twists on the new songs. ‘The Dark And The Light’ is different but when all 5 of us are working together like that it fair brings a smile to one’s face.”
La Paz were formed in Lanarkshire, Scotland in the summer of 1984 by Chic McSherry (guitars), Doogie White (vocals) and Alex Carmichael (bass). At the first rehearsal together they hit it off immediately on a personal level – they also liked the same music and they had the same influences and heroes (Purple, Rainbow, Journey, Gary Moore) so they started to recruit other members to try to form a band and go do some gigs. Andy Mason (keyboards) joined the trio and he fitted in from the start, even though he was still at school when he joined. Drummers were always a problem and, over the life of the band, La Paz went through almost as many as Spinal Tap. Unquestionably the loudest and the most accomplished was/is their current drummer, Paul McManus. La Paz played live regularly, sometimes playing up to a hundred gigs in a year. They played the world-famous Marquee Club in London as well as at some festivals in Milton Keynes and they were featured regularly in Kerrang! (Derek Oliver becoming a big fan of the band) and attracted interest from a number of UK and US record companies, finally agreeing terms with one of them for a three album deal. But it was not to be – for reasons which were never explained by the record label the deal fell through at the very last minute. Sadly the band didn’t survive for very long after that. They did their last gig on 15th October 1988 and then Doogie moved to London to join Midnite Blue, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Cornerstone, Yngwie Malmsteen and now the mighty Tank. And then legendary DJ Tom Russell of 96.3 Rock Radio called Doogie and asked him if he would do some acoustic numbers at The Garage in Glasgow for Rock Radio’s Birthday Bash in January 2008. Doogie agreed and asked Chic to play guitar. It was a big ask after 20 years: almost 1000 people, Doogie singing alone and Chic with one flamenco guitar! “We had such a blast though and it woke up so many great memories in both of us that we decided to give it a go with the full band for my 50th birthday” said Chic. And so the full band started to rehearse and it was clear that they could still play a bit. The band just gelled: just like old times and the gigs were a terrific success. And so the idea of re-recording some of the favourites from the set that had never had a proper production job was conceived. The final result could be heard on the album “Granite” released in early 2012. It was an album with its roots in the past but its energy in the present. And today the band return with their sophomore album entitled “The Dark and The Light”.

So it’s done: Electric Punishment is VICIOUS RUMORS’ eleventh studio album and proves just how much of a force to be reckoned with this band continues to be. “We have permanently grown, there have been no two identical albums in our career because each album has a new, fresh approach,” comments guitarist Geoff Thorpe, not without pride. “Still we’ve never strayed from our course – perhaps precisely for this reason. We’ve remained faithful to our ideals and have always been honest with our fans. I think our loyal followers value that VICIOUS RUMORS have never jumped on any kind of bandwagon. Everything we do comes from the heart, and Electric Punishment documents that no other band on this planet sounds like VICIOUS RUMORS. To us, that’s an incentive, a challenge and a quality feature all in one. And it’s something our fans can rely on when we set off on our next monster tour in spring 2013.”
Electric Punishment will be released through Steamhammer/SPV on April 26th in Germany, April 29th in Europe and May 7th in the US/Canada. Just over 25 years ago, hard-working, blue collar hard rock band Tora Tora were on a high after winning a ‘Battle of the Bands’ contest giving them the
opportunity to record and release their very own independent album. The end result was an album entitled To Rock To Roll. While the look of the indie
cassette was very amateurish, the music was undeniably representative of a band that had what it would take to run with the ‘Big Dogs’…and the major labels
did come calling. This led to the band being signed by A&M Records and the release of a very-well respected album entitled Surprise Attack, which in turn led
to MTV Music videos, tons of radio airplay, and national tours. The band received praise from the fans and press alike allowing them to come off the road and
head right back into the studio to record their sophomore effort, Wild America, which led to even more music videos and touring. It was 1993, and Tora Tora
was a band with momentum set forth to start recordings for what would be a third effort entitled Revolution Day. However, unbeknownst to most hard rock
enthusiasts, a new scene (“Grunge”) was brewing and the bottom of the hard rock world fell out from underneath countless bands of the same ilk. Revolution
Day would never see the light of day until almost two decades later when FnA Records (www.fnarecords.net) teamed up with Tora Tora to release a handful of
never-before-heard Tora Tora recordings.
This “Super Fan Pack” harkens back to the album that got the whole thing started. Tora Tora has graciously allowed for 100, and 100 only, exact replicas of
the To Rock To Roll album to be produced, and have vowed that they will never remanufacture To Rock To Roll again. The artwork is true in every way to that
of the indie cassette release which featured original versions of the songs “Phantom Rider” and “Love’s A Bitch”. This limited edition CD also contains three
other tracks from the To Rock To Roll album: “Wasted Love”, “To Rock To Roll”, and “Time On the Edge”. Each of the hundred CD’s are autographed by
all of the original members (Anthony Corder, Keith Douglas, Patrick Francis, and John Patterson) and individually numbered through an imprinted hologram
security sticker that guarantees its authenticity. All the other items are available only as part of this package and are not being sold individually.
Although this package is extremely limited and will sell out quickly, fear not as the music from To Rock To Roll is also available on the 2010 FnA Records
release Before & After. Also included on Before & After is an original recording of the popular hit “Walkin’ Shoes” and four demos written for the Revolution
Day sessions. If you haven’t had the opportunity, be sure to pick up the other Tora Tora releases on FnA Records. In addition to Before & After, is the album
Bombs Away (which features 11 tracks written during the Surprise Attack sessions) and Miss B’ Havin’ (which features 13 tracks written during the Wild
America sessions), and the heavily sought after third recording Revolution Day featuring memorable tracks like “Mississippi Voodoo Child”, “Candle and the
Stone”, “Rescue Me”, and a handful of other true-to-form Tora Tora classic sounding album tracks.
Tora Tora is truly one of those bands that has stood the test of time. They have managed to do what most of their fellow bands have not been able to do,
and that is keep all the original members together (and on friendly terms) for over two-and-a-half decades. The band still gets out and does the occasional
live performance; infact this year – the band is looking at playing a few gigs in the U.S. and in Canada. Make sure to stay tuned for what this band has on the

Legendary Metal Queen DORO PESCH is currently finishing up the Raise Your Fist North American tour which commenced with a fiery appearance on the 70000 Tons Of Metal Cruise late last month! Touring in support of the anthemic Raise Your Fist full-length, released worldwide via Nuclear Blast late last year, the iconic songstress continues to enthrall the masses with her permeating voice, metallic grace and infectious, onstage charm.
Comments the perpetually upbeat DORO: “So far the tour has been so amazing! It’s the best North American tour we’ve ever done. The venues have been packed and so many have sold out. The fans have been truly amazing and so supportive, it’s been overwhelming! The Joliet, Illinois show was so intense, we’re saving some of the live footage for an upcoming DVD. Some shows have been very long — everyone wants to hear so many songs; so many encores! We are so looking forward to playing the rest of these shows, especially Hollywood! The old Warlock members, our label and so many friends are coming out. I truly thank all the fans who’ve made these shows so amazing and possible.”
Additionally, DORO devotees in Tempe, Arizona will have the opportunity to meet Pesch and her bandmates at a special in-store meet & greet on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Naked Dave’s Music located at 2155 E. University Drive, Tempe, AZ. The signing session will run from 5:00pm – 6:30pm. For more info, go to THIS LOCATION.

Raise Your Fist features guest appearances by Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and Ozzy/Firewind guitarist Gus G, with artwork by British artist and longtime DORO collaborator Geoffrey Gillespie. The offering debuted at #65 on the American Billboard Heatseekers chart upon its first week of release and was commended by Outburn in an 8/10 rating for delivering “50 minutes of expertly crafted Teutonic metal.”
“…probably the classiest lady in metal.” – Outburn
“Raise Your Fist is a solid outing for DORO PESCH and at this stage in the game, would expect nothing less from her. She still manages to savor that hard rock image and make it work for her and I hope she never stops doing this. I say raise your fist in the air babe, and never let it go.” – Blistering
“On her 12th solo album, German metal maiden DORO PESCH sounds more assured than ever, particularly as a songwriter on these 13 taut, Teutonic tunes.” – Revolver
“Raise Your Fist will put a smile on all of DORO’s fans faces, many years after she first appeared Heavy Metal still has plenty to give thanks to those like DORO.” – Sea Of Tranquility
“There is no doubt in my mind that DORO is a pioneer in her field of music, one that does what she loves best, and gives her fans all. That’s what I call dedication. Do I recommend “Raise Your Fist”, most definitely.” – Metal Titans
“Raise Your Fist is a confident, well crafted, classic metal album, which offers a slab of horn-throwing anthems, with just the right amount of sentiment. DORO heads into a new decade with another load of rock and roll ammunition in her arsenal.” – The Examiner
“For a quarter century, DORO has been defying stereotypes and putting out old-school metal that never fails to recall the days when the star of heavy metal burned brightest. Time may not have been the kindest to the style of music DORO has always stood for, but it has been kind to her. The accomplishment of staying relevant in the scene for so long is not something to be taken for granted, and it’s something indeed to be proud of.” – Bloody Good Horror
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of legendary rock band Whitesnake’s new DVD/live CD package, MADE IN JAPAN. MADE IN JAPAN is set for release on April 23rd in North America and will be available in several formats: a deluxe 2CD/DVD edition, Blu-ray and a standalone DVD. The performance footage is shot in stunning HD in 5.1 and stereo and is taken from Whitesnake’s co-headlining set at the “Loud Park” festival on October 11th, 2011 held at Saitama Super Arena in Japan during their “Forevermore World Tour.” The performance was initially recorded only for Japanese TV and future Loud Park promotions, but after three songs were broadcasted on a Loud Park highlights program in Japan, Whitesnake received unprecedented requests for this performance to be made available to the general public. Click here to download the cover art for the deluxe combo version, here for the DVD edition and here for Blu-ray edition.
MADE IN JAPAN contains songs from Whitesnake’s most recent studio album, FOREVERMORE, as well as classic hits such as “Is This Love,” “Still Of The Night” and “Here I Go Again.” The bonus CD also includes never-before-heard outtakes and acoustic versions of material from the award-winning FOREVERMORE album that were recorded during soundchecks on the 2011 Japanese tour. Additional DVD content includes various band photo slideshows and fan-shot videos. Please see below for the full content listing.
Formed in 1977, and steered by the legendary David Coverdale, Whitesnake carry a rightful reputation as one of the world’s leading rock bands. Coverdale’s blues roots, combined with a feral sense of rock and roll, have consistently shaped the ‘Snake’s sound along with Coverdale’s love and appreciation of impeccable musicianship. Whitesnake’s ascent to the very top of the rock n’ roll heap was confirmed with 1987’s self-titled mega-platinum album, which saw two massive Top 10 hits, two #1 singles with “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love” and a virtual 24-hour domination of MTV around the world. David Coverdale was recently named one of Revolver’s “100 Greatest Living Rock Stars” and the UK’s Kerrang voted Coverdale the “Last Great Rock Star.” Musicians on MADE IN JAPAN include David Coverdale (vocals), Doug Aldrich (guitars), Reb Beach (guitars), Michael Devin (bass), Briian Tichy (drums) and special guest Brian Ruedy (keyboards).

I will be the first to admit that this edition of Vie’s Verses is a little cheesy. I know other sites have done the top 10, top 20, top whatever hard rock love songs, power ballads, etc. Yet there is a reason that I am doing this cheesy version of Vie’s Verses. One, is because this week’s edition of Vie’s Verses happens to fall on Valentine’s Day (a very rare occurrence). Two, is because I am a romantic at heart. I’ll bet most of you did not know that about me.
One thing to note is that only love songs were chosen for this list. Not break up songs, not power ballads that weren’t truly love songs, only romantic love songs. So while I love Warrant’s “I Saw Red” it is a song about a cheating woman and will not work in this list. Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” is a breakup song, so you won’t see it here. Tesla’s “Love Song,” is about a guy leaving his girl and telling her it will be all right, so, well, you get the picture.
Now without further adieu, and in honor of Valentine’s Day, here are my top 5 hard rock love songs of all time. Play them for your wife or girlfriend or significant other tonight and be amazed by how she melts in your arms.
Saigon Kick – All I Want
I know that most people are screaming that if I picked a Saigon Kick song, why didn’t I choose “Love is On The Way?” The answer is simple—read the lyrics to both songs. “All I Want” is a much more powerful song sung with raw emotion and desperation. The love that the narrator feels for his muse is overpowering. I’ve always felt that “All I Want” is one of the best love songs ever written. The line “you need a man who loves you more than his life” is extremely telling and meaningful. Being with someone who loves you more than their own means you have found the ultimate lover. It is also very hard to live up to. I only have praise for lead vocalist, Matt Kramer, who must have been fiercely in love when he wrote these lyrics. Incredible song, incredible lyrics, incredible band.
Steelheart – I’ll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)
Simple in its construction, yet powerful in its delivery, Steelheart’s “I’ll Never Let You Go” is an amazing power ballad sung with force. Who wouldn’t love to be told “first time I laid my eyes upon you, all my dreams were answered?” And while the lyrics are few, their message is large. This is a true ode from the narrator to the woman of his dreams. Images of romance, true love, and passion are conjured up every time this song is heard. “I’ll Never Let You Go” was a monster hit for Steelheart and it is easy to see why. It is a beautiful song about finding and holding on to deep true love. On a personal side note, I cannot wait to hear this song live for the first time at this year’s M3 Music Festival.
Hinder – Lips Of An Angel
At first listen, one can debate if this is truly a love song. However, after spinning the song several times and deeply analyzing the lyrics, it is obvious that not only is “Lips Of An Angel” a love song, it is a fantastic love song. A song about two people whom can’t stop thinking of each other and still want to be together, but for some reason are not, is the perfect backdrop for a love song. Hinder took the classic love song and turned it on its head with “Lips Of An Angel.” The listener has no idea why the couple are not together anymore, but know that they should be. “Lips Of An Angel” is the type of love song that provokes chills and raw emotional reactions. When a song can produce that level of intensity it is truly a masterpiece, and one of the greatest love songs of all time.
Stryper – Honestly
This has to be one of the best love songs ever written for any genre of music, but especially for hard rock. Michael Sweet’s voice is second to none and he really wails on this power ballad. And while the song is about God’s (or Jesus’) relationship with man, everyone uses it as a love song to sing to their girl/guy when the mood is right. Between the powerful guitar, pounding drums, and Michael Sweet’s amazing voice, “Honestly” is a song filled with more passion than any other love song that comes to mind. You can feel love just by listening to this song. The message that I will always be there for you no matter what, all you have to do is call on me, is an extremely powerful sentiment. It cements the fact that true love is centered on friendship and that true friends will always be there no matter what happens. “Call on me and I’ll be there for you.”
Kiss – Forever
A magnificent late 80s acoustic ballad, “Forever” is one of Kiss’ best songs to come out of the 80s and it is their best love song. Considering that the band doesn’t write that many love songs, it is easy to make this statement, but I digress. What is most interesting about “Forever” is that the song conveys the message of being deeply in love without the narrator ever saying the words “I love you.” As a matter of fact, the word love is used only twice. It appears in the lines, “I’ve lived my life believing all love is blind,” and “it took your love to make my heart come alive.” And that is the true essence of what makes this such a powerful song. The song conveys the message that the narrator is deeply, truly, in love, but never has to use the words “I love you.” So while it is a sweet and romantic song, it still holds an air of manliness in that it doesn’t turn too sappy from the narrator’s perspective. “Forever” is a magnificent love song that has had a long history of helping guys woo their girls. There is no reason to think that “Forever” won’t continue to do so for many years to come.
Those are my picks for the five best hard rock love songs of all time. What are yours?

ROCKLAHOMA – Life, Liberty & The Pursuit Of Rock!
Sister Sin and Doro brought their hot winter metal tour to Columbus, Ohio last Saturday Night. I have been looking forward to this show for a quite some time, and had this one blocked out on my calendar for weeks. I saw Sister Sin live back in 2009, when they opened for Faster Pussycat and the Bulletboys. Sister Sin blew those bands off of the stage that night. I have been anxious to see them play again ever since. I can’t imagine two more power female metal singers singing on the same bill (although Benedictum would have been a cool addition) as Liv Jagrell and Doro Pesch.
So Saturday night, Stone from Metal Odyssey and I, embarked on a short road trip to the Ace of Cups club in Columbus. Several local bands opened the show, with my favorite being the thrash metal band Skullbomb.
The anticipation grew with each and every band, and I was very excited when Sister Sin took the stage. If you haven’t seen Sister Sin play, you are truly missing out. Liv Jagrell has a big voice that could rival that of Doro. Sister Sin’s set was tight, and I was very happy to hear them play a few new songs off of their new album, Now and Forever. If you haven’t picked up one of Sister Sin’s CD’s, you are really missing out.
I have been a Warlock fan since high school, but believe it or not, I have not seen Doro perform live before last Saturday. How was Doro?
She looked and sounded amazing. She hasn’t lost one bit of her vocal range. Her voice was in fine form, and her band was damn good too. I nearly forgot that Johnny Dee from Britny Fox was drumming for Doro. I haven’t seen him since the 80’s. His drum solo was pretty cool too.
I couldn’t have been happier with Doro’s set, although I wish she would have played longer. Her set consisted mostly of Warlock tunes including: “Metal Racer”, “Burning The Witches”, “Earthshaker Rock”, “True As Steel”, “Fight For Rock”, “All We Are”, “Metal Tango”, and “Für Immer “. She also performed “Raise your Fist In The Air” and “Hero” off of her new album, Raise Your Fist.
After the show, both Liv and Doro were at the merchandise both autographing memorabilia, taking pictures and meeting fans. The line was long, and the wait was heinous, but getting to meet Doro Pesch made this awesome night of metal even better. I can’t wait to see Sister Sin and Doro play again.
There are a few dates left on this tour. Don’t miss this show if it comes to your town! The remaining dates are listed below.

The Robot Lords of Tokyo have returned to deliver their third album of ten-ton riffage and whiskey-fueled vocals, available on CD and download January 15th, 2013. Entitled Virtue & Vice, the record features numerous guest six-stringers, including Chris Poland (Megadeth), Tracy G (Dio), Wayne Findlay (Michael Schenker Group) and Steve Theado (American Dog). Production duties were once again handled by Joe Viers (Bobaflex, No Sky Today), with mastering by Rickard Bengsston (Opeth, Arch Enemy)
The Robot Lords are the brainchild of Ohio-based songwriting duo Rick Ritzler (drums, guitar) and Paul Jones (vocals, guitar), who came up with the idea for the guest-laden project in 2006 and have since released two critically acclaimed albums on their own RLOT Records. Renowned metal scribe Martin Popoff called their 2009 sophomore effort, Whiskey, Blood & Napalm, “the best indie I’ve heard in a decade. Like an ass kickin’ Black Label Society crossed with The Sword, it’s a masterpiece of bludgeoning perfection and it will knock you on your ass.” His colleague Bob Nalbandian of Shockwaves/HardRadio called Jones “one of the most powerful new vocalists in metal today”, while Classic Rock Magazine named WB&N one of their Top 50 Albums of 2009.
For Virtue & Vice, Ritzler and Jones have once again teamed up with producer Viers to cook up their unique combination of classic metal riffing, stoner/doom grooves and southern swagger, sprinkled with just the right amount of shredding lead guitar pyrotechnics. In addition to the record’s nine new sonic sledgehammers, the Robots have once again reworked an obscure classic from the hard rock vaults, this time tackling the title track from Cinderella’s 1986 debut, Night Songs.
On January 11th, Swiss Power Rockers SHAKRA released their ninth studio album “Powerplay”. For their new video clip, filmed for the song “Save You From Yourself”, the band teamed up with Nina Burri, well-known for her “snake woman” appearances in several TV shows. Check out the clip below!
Taking up where iconic bands like Deep Purple and Bad Company left off, Heaven & Earth is on a mission to resurrect the sanctity of classic rock in its purest, most accessible form on their third studio album titled Dig. Due out on Quarto Valley Records, Dig was produced by Dave Jenkins, who’s worked with everyone from Metallica to Tower of Power – and features special guests Howard Leese (Heart, Paul Rodgers), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), and David Paich (Toto).
The band have recently released a special behind the scenes look into the making of Dig and what brought these five musicians together to make such a “classic” sounding record. The clip premiered on AOL Noisecreep earlier this week and can be seen here.
The band’s founder and visionary, Stuart Smith, had this to say about Dig, “I feel that with the crafting of the songs on this album, the incredible band we’ve put together, especially with powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta and the unwavering support of Quarto Valley Records’ President, Bruce Quarto, we really have a shot at getting Heaven & Earth the attention it deserves. This album is by far, the best thing I have ever done in my life.”
Smith, who spent the 70’s bending strings with numerous groups before he distinguished himself by making the acquaintance of Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, who mentored the up-and-coming musician. At the urging of Blackmore, Smith made his way to Los Angeles and began planting the seeds of what was to become Heaven & Earth. Now with the release of Dig on the near horizon, the guitarist says Heaven & Earth is a true band, an energized collective of like-minded musicians who are excited at bringing its unique, celestial brand of rock to audiences all over the world. “All the pieces are in place,” he explains with graceful candor. “We’re ready to make this our year.”
The album cover for Dig was created by acclaimed photographer Glen Wexler, who has shot over 300 album covers, including records by Van Halen, Black Sabbath, and Michael Jackson.
The track listing for Dig is as follows:
2. No Money, No Love

I try my best not to be biased when reviewing albums. I prefer to have no expectations, listen with an open ear, and let the music tell me what to write. However, when it came time to review Hinder’s latest album, Welcome To The Freakshow, I must admit that I entered with expectations. Hinder’s last three albums were absolutely incredible, and this band has become one of my “go-to” groups when I don’t know what to listen to. The anticipation of a new Hinder record had me excited and hopeful. These hard rocking greats were going to once again douse my soul with some solid music. Once I listened to the album, I was reminded why I should never have expectations.
Welcome To The Freakshow starts out in typical Hinder fashion with the first track, “Save Me.” And up until the 2-minute mark, “Save Me” sounds like classic Hinder. Then, out of nowhere, violins enter the mix and lead singer Austin Winkler goes into a small rap. That’s right, I said rap, as in hip-hop music. Where did that come from? And while it doesn’t destroy the song, it sets the stage for fans to scratch their heads. The following track, “Ladies Come First” doesn’t do much to persuade me that this record will be a strong effort. Weak vocals, weaker lyrics, and a chorus that sounds like it was ripped right out of a Nickelback song destroy any credibility this track may have had.
The next batch of songs lift Welcome To The Freak Show and gave me hope that this would be a solid album after all. “Should Have Known Better,” is a return to the classic Hinder sound that fans have come to know and love. Although it is a ballad, ballads are where Hinder tend to excel and “Should Have Known Better” is no exception. Possibly the strongest track on the record, “Should Have Known Better” has hit written all over it. The great tunes continued with title track “Welcome To The Freakshow,” and “Talk To Me.” “Welcome To The Freakshow” is classic, hard rocking Hinder with witty lyrics and sexual themes, while “Talk To Me” is another grand ballad performed in the iconic Hinder style. “Get Me Away From You” is another strong ballad, and the following track “Is It Just Me” is a mid-tempo sing along song focusing on themes of doubt and self adjustment.
The real challenge with “Welcome To The Freakshow” is that it is quite ballad heavy. This formula has worked for other bands in the past (Nickelback comes to mind), but I’ve always considered Hinder more of a hard edged band. That’s not to say the ballads are bad, because they aren’t. All of the ballads are actually well written and enjoyable to listen to multiple times through. However, I like the harder edged Hinder and that is what is absent from “Welcome To The Freakshow.” Even the non-ballads are more mid-tempo than flat out rocker, and that takes away from the Hinder that we have come to enjoy. Yes, they kick it up with “Welcome To The Freakshow” and “See You In Hell,” but it isn’t enough to really make Welcome To The Freakshow stand out on its own. Perhaps the band wanted to reach a different audience, or grow the one they have, or branch out in a different direction. I can understand that and don’t fault them for trying something new. However, it makes for a disappointment when coming in with set expectations.
I appreciate that Hinder wanted to be more experimental for their fourth album. And since they have brought me so much joy over the last few years, I am willing to give Hinder a pass this go round. Almost every band, at some point in their career, releases at least one below average record. With that in mind, Hinder is forgiven for Welcome To The Freakshow. While not terrible, it is far from fantastic, and that is what I have come to expect from Hinder—nothing but the best. This time around, the band did not bring their best, but I have every reason to believe that they will make it up to me when they record their next one.
