New Album New Horizon Available October 1st in North America on Napalm Records
THE ANSWER are set to return in 2013 with a new studio album New Horizon on October 1st. Recently the band completed work on a video for the first single from New Horizon “Spectacular”. The video will be released in both a XXX NSFW for work version and of course a family-friendly clean version. Today the band has posted the XXX trailer for the video. Check it out HERE and be sure to check out the premiere of the video next week on Artist Direct.
Keeping the beacon of Irish rock music well and truly alight, THE ANSWER have consistently delivered commercial, and critically acclaimed albums. The band have toured the world extensively, proving themselves to be an incendiary live act – spending almost two years as main support to AC/DC and playing to over 2 million people, performing festivals across the globe and also supporting the likes of The Rolling Stones, Whitesnake and Wolfmother as well as countless headline tours.
Since their third studio album in late 2011, the band instigated a major shakeup in their circumstances and with new management, live booking agents and with new record label on board, late 2012 saw them enter the studio with ex Little Angels vocalist Toby Jepson at the production helm. The new record, “New Horizon” will be their fourth studio album and with mixes from rock icon Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), it will be released on October 1st in North America through label Napalm Records GmbH in multiple formats.

Heaven & Earth (guitarist Stuart Smith, singer Joe Retta, bassist Chuck Wright, drummer Richie Onori, and keyboardist Arlan Schierbaum) have just released a video for their second single and power ballad, “I Don’t Know What Love Is” from their critically acclaimed album Dig (Quarto Valley Records), which is available on iTunes now. The video — directed by Glen Wexler (Van Halen, Black Sabbath,ig Michael Jackson) and produced by Jeremy Alter and Meiert Avis of Pusher Media (U2, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Evanescence)–was exclusively premiered on www.guitarplayer.com and www.melodicrock.com this past Friday (July 26th).
The video — featuring special guest appearances by actors Angelina Vitale, Derek DuChesne and Tiffany Phillips — continues the story of two lovers trying to connect throughout time. “I Don’t Know What Love Is” is the follow-up to the success of Heaven & Earth‘s first video for “No Money, No Love,” which has received more than 500,000 plays to date and can be viewed below.
Says guitarist Stuart Smith, “I’m very proud of both the song and this new video by Glen Wexler. We released ‘No Money, No Love’ as the first single and video as we wanted to establish ourselves as a rock band that does the occasional ballad, not a ballad band that does the occasional rock song. For me “I Don’t Know What Love Is” was always the main hit from Dig.”
What do you get when combine the talents of Billy Sheehan, Mike Portnoy & Richie Kotzen? One badass band called The Winery Dogs.

I have been digging this new Seattle band Walking Papers, which now features Duff McKagan on bass. Walking Papers is on the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival this summer. Check out their clip “The Whole World’s Watching” below. Walking Papers debut album will be released August 6th via Loud & Proud Records.
2013 has been kind of a strange music year on the live front. Usually there are several major rock shows to chose from, but in 2013, the Festival tours have avoided Cincinnati, and there hasn’t been any major hard rock tours to speak of. Usually I find myself behind the camera glass for several shows, but the first half of 2013 has been mostly country shows at the major venues and I don’t shoot or cover those.
I have been to several shows in 2013, and after attending several shows this year, I quickly began to realize that I have been spending far less on concerts than I have in 2012.
With that being said, I have still been able to catch a few bands here and there, and I have been able to do so without breaking the bank.
Billy Idol, Cheap Thrill, Foreigner, Alice Cooper, Night Ranger, Cheap Trick & Brother Cane are some of the recent bands I have seen. Total ticket money spent $120.00. Considering this is about how much I dropped for KISS & Motley Crue tickets in 2012, this is somewhat of a bargain. In fact, many of the shows were free events paid for by Radio stations & their sponsors.
Some of these shows I wouldn’t have found out about without digging around Pollstar to see where the bands were playing at. They weren’t all local shows, but I am always willing to drive to a reasonably priced show if it isn’t too far. Sometimes it pays, to scan your neighboring cities on Pollstar to see if your favorite bands are within driving distance. You can also find many free shows at State Fairs as well.
In 2013, Cincinnati’s newest concert venue, The Horseshoe Casino, has offered several shows averaging around $40.00 in price. The concerts haven’t been big multi-band festival shows. They are usually single band offerings, but all of the shows have been great so far. I appreciate having a new place to see a few shows that isn’t so costly.
You can still rock in America on a budget. You just need to know where to look.
(The photo’s below were taken with a point & shoot. Apparently, I have a sickness where I can’t go to a show, and snap some photos.)
Dallas based hard rock outfit Brand New Machine‘s new album, “The Devil Made Me Do It”, hit stores this week via Epochal Artist Records/Capitol Music Group. To celebrate the album’s release the group are currently streaming the song “Dust The Sky” online at http://altsds.co/0uz5. The group have also announced the addition of drummer Seven Antonopoulos, formerly of Opiate for the Masses, to the Brand New Machine ranks.
“We would like to welcome drummer Seven Antonopoulos to Brand New Machine. Seven is an incredible drummer and his style fits in perfectly with what we do,” said bassist Wiley Oliver. “It’s hard to compare us to other rock acts today because a lot of rock albums all sound the same. So many bands come and go chasing trends, but we’ve never jumped on any bandwagons. This music is a lifestyle and we wear it like a badge.”
Brand New Machine‘s new album, “The Devil Made Me Do It”, was recorded at Validus Recording Studios in Los Angeles, CA under the watchful eye of producer/mixer Ryan Greene (Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick). The album takes the band’s hard-living lifestyle and mixes it with arena ready rock anthems to create a soundtrack for debauchery. Brand New Machine’s explosive live show has earned them countless opening slots for national acts including recent overseas dates with Guns N’ Roses. Brand New Machine‘s video for the song “Girls Like You” can be seen below.
It’s been a while since you’ve heard me complain (or whine, if you prefer) about ticket prices. I haven’t recently dedicated a Vie’s Verses to it. I haven’t tweeted (@ryovie) about my disgust with ticket prices for a few months. And I haven’t commented via podcast about the climbing prices of concert tickets. Yet, with my upcoming attendance at the New Jersey Black Sabbath show, I thought that it was time to revisit ticket prices and even offer an idea that may change the way tickets are sold (at least, I can only hope).
For the Black Sabbath show, I am sitting on the lawn. The reason for this is that I just couldn’t justify the cost of $150 to see Black Sabbath. I know they are icons and probably worth the money, but they are old and I have never seen them before. What if Ozzy’s voice is shot? What if the show is horrendous? $50 is much easier to swallow on a bad concert than $150.
With the show coming up in less than two weeks, I started thinking about ticket prices once again. That prompted me to do a little research on the cost of current tours. I picked five concerts at random that I would either be interested in seeing, or have already purchased tickets for. Here is the price range that I discovered for each. (NOTE: All prices include the heinous fees).
Black Sabbath – $45.50 – $148
Bon Jovi – $38.05 – $599.00
Pearl Jam – $92.00
Shinedown (w/ Skillet and Papa Roach) – $60.85 -$71.10
Nine Inch Nails – $63.00 – $113.00
First off, $600 to see Bon Jovi? Really? Without Richie Sambora? Really? Bon Jovi have lost their minds. And yes, there are seats for $38.00 but they are way up high and there aren’t that many of them to begin with. Want to know why Bon Jovi is having trouble selling out his home stadium in New Jersey? The ticket prices are just way too high. Recently I attended a Barenaked Ladies concert (not hard rock, I know, but I have other tastes as well). Tickets ranged between $40 – $80. The amphitheater where I saw them perform was approximately ¾ full (and I am being generous). Why? $80 was just too much to pay.
I have to think that when tickets don’t sell well, bands, promoters, and venues are all losing money. Wouldn’t it make more sense to lower the prices slightly and sell out the venue instead of having a half empty arena? But what can be done? How can we, the fans, find a way to attend the show at an affordable rate? Mulling over this issue, I came up with an idea that I thought might be worth a trial basis at least. What if before a band went on tour, they took a poll to have the fans name the price? The band could set the minimum price (say $20 ala Kid Rock) and then fans could vote on what price they would pay. It works for Priceline, although I will be the first to admit that I know nothing about their business model. But why not a Priceline for concerts?
If Kiss sent a press release stating that they wanted fans to vote on the price of their upcoming tour, I am sure that they would have droves of people voting on the price. I know that I would. And then, based upon the price that fans wanted to pay, the band could decide if they wanted to go on tour or not. Bands, venues, and promoters, always claim that they have to charge high prices so that they don’t lose money on tours. This would give them the option of knowing how much money they would make, and whether it would be lucrative for them to tour. Sure, there would have to be plenty of logistics to work out, but overall, if thousands of fans vote that they would pay $40 to see Kiss, but no more, then the band would know what the fans feel is a fair price. This way, the band would have a pretty good idea that their concerts would sell out at a certain price. Using the above example, Kiss would know that their 25 show tour would sell out at $40 a ticket, but they may have a hard time moving tickets at $50 per ticket. And since every band claims that it is all about the fans, why wouldn’t they want to do this? (Kiss is charging $76 – $113 for their current tour. Floor seats are still available at most shows).
I know that we have to assume fans are going to select an honest price that they would pay and not just the lowest price they see, but even if they choose the lowest price, the band has the option to not tour. Personally, I would pay $50 to see Black Sabbath (I am), but not $150. Yet, I don’t feel that I should be relegated to the lawn because I want to save $100. Even the mighty Pearl Jam, who fought for years to keep ticket prices low, are charging almost $100 per ticket. I am a huge fan of the band, but I am not sure that I am willing to pay $100 to see them in concert.
What are your thoughts? Would you be interested in a “name your own price per tour” option? Would you enter an honest amount, or just opt for the lowest price polled? Drop a line in the comments section and let us know your thoughts.

MONSTER MAGNET are back! The band has confirmed an October 15th North American release date for their new album entitled Last Patrol via Napalm Records. The artwork was created by Johun Sumrow with consultation coming from Chris Ryall and designs by Ryan Clark for Invisible Creatures Inc. The album will be available as a Limited Edition CD, standard CD, 2LP and digital format.
In support of Last Patrol, MONSTER MAGNET will be embarking on a full-blown North American Tour! Frontman and MONSTER MAGNET mastermind Dave Wyndorf checked in with his thoughts about Last Patrol:
“Last Patrol is a return to our roots in terms of vibe and recording style. It’s full-on psychedelic space-rock with a 60’s garage feel, recorded almost exclusively with vintage guitars, amps and effects in our hometown of Red Bank, NJ. The songs are a kind of Space-Noir, tales of cosmic revenge, peaking libidos, alienation and epic strangeness. It’s a weird trip through the back alleys of a dark, retro-future, which not by coincidence very much resembles my own life. (laughs) The lyrics aren’t fantasy really, rather a recounting of my musings on, observations of and general emotional reaction to my life and environment during a 1 week writing period in February of 2013. But I tend to use the vernacular and imagery of science fiction and surrealism to express myself and that’s where these lyrics get trippy. There’s also our cover version of Donovan’s “Three Kingfishers” which I thought fit the mood of the album.”
“Last Patrol was produced by Phil Caivano and myself with an effort to bring a home grown feel to the whole affair. We had been doing smaller projects out of Phil’s “Studio 13″ recording space and I really felt comfortable there so it was the natural choice on where to record the next full-scale Monster Magnet album. Phil and I grew up together and have a shared love of some very particular vintage music and styles. And everybody in the band played their asses off on this one.”

Coldspell are poised to release their exciting new album. Based in the north of Sweden they were formed in 2005 by guitarist and songwriter Michael Larsson, who was previously with the band R.A.W., a band that recorded two albums in the 90’s with members from Dalton and Kicken (Poodles) on drums. Together with four other experienced musicians the band Coldspell blasted onto the scene with their own brand of hard rock. They first took the world by storm with their “Infinate Stargaze” release (ESM184), a recording that draws influences from a mixture of everything they grew up with from the groove of the 70’s to the choruses and melodies of the 80’s, mixed with the raw and naked excitement of the 90’s, not forgetting the production expertise of the millennium.
Coldspell’s debut CD has already created a stir in rock circles and the album received stunning reviews all over the world and was on several album “top lists” for 2009 and album of the year at rockrealms.com (category “heavy, hard and melodic rock”).
Two years later and a brand new release “Out from the Cold” was put out to an eager audience, once again mixed by Tommy Hansen in Denmark, Tommy of course having previously worked with Helloween, TNT, Pretty Maids, Jorn and Pagan’s Mind. Well, why change a winning formula?! .
Its now 2013 and Coldspell have been working hard on a new recording, entitled “Frozen Paradise”, once again with Tommy Hansen at the mixing desk. This is an unbelievable recording and the band have taken it one step further and made an album that surpasses all they have done. Great new songs like “Paradise”, “Goin all the way” and “On the run” are just such examples of their excellence. Razor sharp riffs, solid rhythms and great choruses are the order of the day, this is an album we have all been eagerly awaiting and no-one will be disappointed.

“There were some inevitable changes in the band and we decided to roll with it and go 4-piece. There is always some type of adversity in this band but we move forward and ‘Rise Above’ Chris came in and just killed it. The changes have really been for the better in regards to the band. There is probably a good documentary some where in here, LOL.” says bassist Mike Mackey

Ending ten months of speculation after an arduous audition process, the band are proud to announce Serbian vocalist Nikola Mijic as their new front man.
Hailing from Senta, in the North of Serbia, Nikola is a vastly experienced singer despite his tender years. For the past ten years he has been fronting Serbian outfit Alogia and more recently Hungarian Prog Rockers Dreyelands, who released their debut album on Lion Music in 2010. In 2008 he also featured heavily on the Prog Rock project album Expedition Delta.
A happy Nikola said “I’m really honored to be part of the Metal journey of Eden’s Curse with their new upcoming album that is coming out on 4th October and I’m looking forward to rock with you guys”!
Drummer Pete Newdeck commented “For me, when I heard a lot of the auditions, Nik’s was the one that stood out. It stood out mainly because of it’s originality. His voice was strong, it was soulful and he had something different to offer. That’s really why I championed him because I think he could offer something different, change the face of the band and possibly help this band move forward”.
Bassist Paul Logue added “When Nik sent his audition of Evil & Divine that’s when we really began to sit up and take notice and say that this guy was something special. He is the complete package”.
Guitarist Thorsten Koehne enthused “He’s just an amazing talent, one of the most amazing singers I’ve seen in recent times. He’s just so versatile in what he can do and he just fits the band perfect because with Eden’s Curse we’re very diverse, as far as the music, so there’s not just one particular style that we are doing. So we were really looking for a singer that could keep up with that and have a range in his vocals. Nikola is just perfect because he can do so many things, from blues to metal stuff and everything in between”.
Also joining the Eden’s Curse ranks is Welsh keyboard wizard and Powerquest main man Steve Williams who replaces Alessandro Del Vecchio.
Bassist Paul Logue commented “Sadly we we part company with our brother Alessandro on a truly positive note as his career as a mixing engineer and a producer has really taken off, meaning less and less time could be devoted to the Eden’s Curse cause. We will miss him dearly as a friend and a musician and we wish him nothing but the utmost success. We firmly believe he has the talent to go right to the very top! He will always be considered a part of the Eden’s Curse family and is cursed for life”.
Williams, a former member of Dragonforce, commented “It was a real thrill to be asked by Paul and the boys to get involved in Eden’s Curse. I’ve been a fan for a long time, I’ve known the guys a while and it’s great to be here getting myself right cursed I can tell you”!
Bassist Paul Logue further commented “I’ve known Steve for a while and when Ale left he recommended we look at Steve. It was very easy choice for us, as we were already good friends and with Powerquest calling it a day it was a perfect time in both our careers to join forces. Steve is a smashing player and one of life’s true gentlemen. He is an utter joy to have on board and I am genuinely excited to see what we can produce together in the years to come as I am a big fan of his songwriting”.
The band can also confirm that their long awaited fourth album “Symphony Of Sin” will be released by AFM Records on 4th October.
This will be preceded by a digital single “Evil & Divine”, for which the band shot a video for on location at the famous St. Andrews in the Square location in Glasgow, under the direction of Ryan Priddy and his team at Independent Element. More news to follow on that at http://www.edenscurse.com

Kinematic Music, a new division of Kinematic Entertainment, launches this fall with the September 17, 2013 release of OUR OWN DEVICES from Florida-based progressive metallers Mindcage, mixed and mastered by rock legend Michael Wagener.
OUR OWN DEVICES is a fantasy storybook set to music. Combining cultural and literary elements of steampunk, dystopian society and futuristic technologies with highly articulate progressive metal music, the album transports the listener to a world broken and needing a hero. That oppressive world is devoid of arts, creativity, light, and ultimately, humanity. But from it springs an enigmatic character, Arabella Vash, who is called to The One Constant, a group of rebels who maintain the history and teachings of the last free society.
The clock is ticking
there’s no time to think
Her mission now…
wake them all from sleep
“The Human Race”
The story says “Arabella is the key,” but will she unlock the future in time?
The core members of Mindcage – Dietrick Hardwick (writer, guitarist), Brian Howell (bass) and Craig Nudo (drums) – have been connected personally and through music for almost thirty years. The significance of this project, for them, is that a lifelong goal has come to fruition. With the addition of power vocalist Jeff Hignite, the intense and unique synergy of writing and performing became apparent. The band is proudly debuting OUR OWN DEVICES to the public this September at ProgPower USA XIV.
1. Cadence March
2. For All Mankind (The Dark Design)
3. Our Own Devices
4. The Human Race
5. At Full Steam
7. The One Constant

OUR OWN DEVICES will be available on iTunes, amazon.com, and at your favorite record store.
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of FOUR the anticipated reunion album from Canadian rockers CONEY HATCH on September 24th in North America and September 27th in Europe.
Once dubbed “The Loudest Band in Toronto” CONEY HATCH is back with their first record of new material in over two decades. FOUR is chalked full of the unique brand of melodic riff-rock that first brought the band to the attention of critics and rock fans all over the world.
Formed back in the early ‘80s in Toronto Canada, original members Andy Curran, Carl Dixon, Dave Ketchum and Steve Shelski released 3 records on Anthem Records in Canada and Polygram for the rest of the world. The band toured relentlessly and played support slots on tour with the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Ted Nugent and Cheap Trick to name a few. After three releases and many miles of success and rocky road under their belts, the four band members went their separate ways in 1986.
The story of this reunion is an amazing journey that only fate could be responsible for. Late one night, on his way home from a recording session in Australia, a weary Carl Dixon had a near fatal head-on car collision that left him clinging to life. While Carl was still in an induced coma, his wife reached out to the other members of Coney Hatch and asked them to offer words of encouragement over to the phone to Carl. She held the phone to his ear as he lay unconscious in his bed. “I told him to get better quick “says bassist / vocalist Andy Curran. “I said we had a lot more rockin’ to do with Coney Hatch. I really didn’t think we’d play together again but it just came out of my mouth… and Carl remembered it!”
Be careful what you wish for!!……after many operations, Band-Aids, stitches, titanium rods, doctors, nurses, medicine and sheer gut-determination Carl Dixon returned to the stage with his 3 original band mates in August of 2010 in Hamilton Ontario in front of 7,500 hungry Hatch fans. News of that show travelled fast and the original Coney Hatch was soon invited to play Firefest 2011 for their first time ever in the UK! The rave reviews flooded in after that sweaty night in Nottingham and the band returned to their homeland to find a record deal offer waiting for an all new Coney Hatch record.
After much discussion and soul-searching the band decided to grab the opportunity from Frontiers to work together again. They enlisted the help of long time friend and Juno Award winning engineer Vic Florencia (Danko Jones, Nelly Furtado, Hillary Duff, Marc Jordan, Olivia Newton-John etc) to capture the new recordings.
“All of us are thrilled to have recorded a 4th Coney Hatch record” says Curran. “We never thought it would happen but the stars aligned and hell froze over! The new material feels like it could have been the record after OUTA HAND before FRICTION… Its raw and not too over produced, but still has that vintage Hatch sound. …sonically we did a ” 2013 LA botox face lift” job and it sounds pretty fresh. The recording process was extremely challenging as the four of us all live separate lives in four different towns…it was honestly like herding cats, but eventually we got them all in the same bag! We’re very happy with the final outcome.”
Based on the crazy journey that plucked the band out of the bars (the Monkey Bars) in the early 80s into the hands of Max Webster kingpin Kim Mitchell and then onto Max Norman for OUTA HAND and FRICTION no one is more surprised than the members of CONEY HATCH to be back in studio with their patched up Steve Austin–ish lead vocalist/ guitarist Carl Dixon in 2013!!
FOUR tracklisting includes: Blown Away; Boys Club; Down & Dirty; Do It Again; Connected; Revive; We Want More; Devil U Know; Marseille; Keep Drivin’; Holdin’ On.
In Carl Dixon words “We think everyone will agree that FOUR was worth the wait!”

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
TO RELEASE UNBLACKENED
ON DVD, BLU-RAY, AND DIGITAL VIDEO VIA EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT
CD DOUBLE DISC VIA ENTERTAINMENT ONE
~September 24, 2013~
Unblackened,” the new live DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video from Black Label Society will be released on September 24, 2013 by Eagle Rock Entertainment. [Pre-book Order Date September 9, MSRP $19.98 Blu-ray, $14.98 DVD].
Additionally, Zakk’s label home, eOne Music, will release the audio version of the “Unblackened” DVD under the same name. The double disc release will have six additional tracks not found on the DVD, including two acoustic versions of “Queen Of Sorrow” and “Won’t Find It Here,” and covers of Leon Russell’s “Song For You” and “Aint No Sunshine When She’s Gone” by Bill Withers.
Since their early nineties inception, Black Label Society, formed and helmed by guitar legend Zakk Wylde, has been at the forefront of hard rock. Their penchant for hard riffs and blazing solos has resulted in a slew of hugely successful albums and a reputation as one of the most powerful live bands of their generation. “Unblackened,” however, unveils another side of the band.
Filmed and recorded earlier this year in high definition at Los Angeles’ Club Nokia, “Unblackened” is Black Label Society presenting their songs in a whole new light, with greater use of acoustic instrumentation. Wylde plays both guitar and piano, with Nick Catanase on guitar, John DeServio on bass/vocals, Chad Szeliga on drums, Derek Sherinian on keyboards/piano, and Greg Locascio providing additional vocals.
Their stripped-down approach highlights the subtler nuances of the songwriting, without losing any of the fire or intensity. Classic tracks like “Stillborn,” “The Blessed Hellride,” “In This River,” “Throwin’ It All Away,” “Losin’ Your Mind,” and many others are still punctuated by the stinging, searing solos that fans know and love, while showcasing the versatility of the band.
In addition to the concert, “Unblackened” is rich in bonus material. A new interview with Zakk, photo gallery, music video for “Losin’ Your Mind,” and a feature with Wylde visiting HM Prison Stocken in the U.K . are all included.
Zakk Wylde, who has been called one of the true guitar heroes of the past 20-plus years, served as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist for over 20 years in addition to his work with BLS. This collaboration led to a string of multi-platinum albums, including Osbourne’s biggest selling “No More Tears,” of which Wylde wrote all the music. Bestowed with such accolades as “Golden God” by Metal Hammer and the “Best Guitarist” Award from Revolver Magazine, Wylde has proven time and time again that his songwriting, guitar prowess, and on-stage persona, along with his larger-than-life personality, have made him a force to be reckoned with. Black Label Society continues to enthrall fans around the globe, and “Unblackened” is another incredible piece in the band’s catalog.

You probably remember hearing “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats or “Focus” by Hocus Pocus at some point in your life. Most likely you heard these songs and thought they were freaking amazing, even though they may have been about the oddest songs you’ve ever heard.”It’s safe to dance?” Really? I still remember the first time I heard “Focus.” The song was so odd, yet I could not bring myself to turn it off.
And then after it was finished, I immediately wanted to listen to it again. As weird as it was, the song was still magnificent in its own right. Rock and roll has a lot of songs like that. They are the strangest things we’ve ever listened to, yet they are so enjoyable that we want to hear them over and over again. I’ve decided to reminisce for this edition of Vie’s Verses. Take a stroll down memory lane with me as I try to recall the oddest hard rock songs that still rocked like no other.
David Lee Roth – Hot Dog And A Shake
After parting ways with Van Halen, Diamond Dave went out on his own and released a fantastic album in Eat ‘Em And Smile. He then followed that up with the brilliant Skyscraper. The addition of Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai as band members only added to the greatness of each of these records. And while not every song was a huge hit or an unforgettable anthem, there was always one song that stood out to me as a great tune that I never understood lyrically—“Hot Dog And A Shake.” According to Dave, that’s what you’re hungry for. And while the lyrics may be ultra-corny, the music was so fabulous, that I found myself singing along after just a few listens. Steve Vai’s solo is one of the greatest on the entire album and the riff just made this song so addicting. And yet, it’s about hot dogs and shakes. To this day, I still move my feet and sing along whenever I hear this tune. And yes, I know there are plenty of innuendos in this song. 13 year old me, did not, Okay?
Queen – Bicycle Race
When it comes to Queen, there are several songs that could be chosen as odd and yet still addicting. “Fat Bottomed Girls” came to mind immediately, and while that is a weird song, there are plenty of men with a fetish for big bottomed women. To me, “Bicycle Race” was always the strangest Queen song I had ever heard. And yet, I loved it as much as I loved “Another One Bites The Dust,” and “We Will Rock You.” All Freddie Mercury wants to do is ride his bicycle—yes he wants to ride his bike. “Bicycle Race” could lyrically be one of the dumbest songs in existence, and yet Queen made it a memorable hit that I still enjoy.
White Zombie – Thunder Kiss ’65
I think the biggest part of what makes this song so odd is the fact that without looking up the lyrics, I have no idea what Rob Zombie is singing. Whenever I hear the song I sing along as such: “Blah, blah, meh, meh… NINETEEN SIXTY FIVE…YEAH!!!” Looking at the lyrics to the song just makes me more confused. Pig sweat a million miles? I’ve got a heart atomic style? What the hell does all of that mean? Truthfully, it doesn’t really matter, because “Thunder Kiss ‘65” is one of the hardest rocking songs I’ve ever heard and I will always scream “NINETEEN SIXTY…FIVE…YEAH!” at the top of my lungs any time this song is played within my general vicinity. Zombie may be strange, but he’s a master when it comes to music (and horror movies).
I’m The Man – Anthrax
At the end of the 80s, rap and metal came together and in a creative outburst, “I’m The Man” was born. As a pre-teen, this was one of the coolest songs I had ever heard and it made me fall in love with Anthrax. As a well-seasoned hard rock loving adult, I think the song is just plain silly. And yet, secretly, I still listen to it every now and again to make sure that I remember the lyrics—don’t worry, I do. The song was meant to be campy and comical, and it certainly succeeded in that regard, but the song was also a great rocking tune. Everyone wanted to sing along when this song came on. Everyone. So we learned the lyrics and did our part. To this day I still know the sexual organ located in the lower abdominal area…..! No man, it’s, dick! Not! Not!
Baby Snakes – Hurricane
This is a song about a high school guy that fails miserably in trying to attract a girl he is lusting after, as told through telephone conversations and jaw dropping guitar solos. This song basically summed up my freshman year of high school, so naturally the first time I heard it I was in tears from laughing so hard. Jenny is the subject of the narrator’s lust interest, and as the song opens he is psyching himself up that today is his lucky day, he’s going to ask her to go out and she’s going to say yes. And in his nervous confused state, he dials the wrong number. Enter hard hitting drums by Jay Schellen and some amazing guitar riffs from Robert Sarzo. “Baby Snakes” takes off from there, documenting the failed attempts of the narrator continuing to call Jenny and annoy her to no end. Cleverly put together, “Baby Snakes” remains one of the oddest, yet coolest, rock songs that I have ever heard. If you’ve never heard the song, you need to seek it out. It’s worth the effort.

Dream Theater’s self-titled album – the band’s 12th studio release overall, and fourth with Roadrunner Records – will be released September 24, and now you can check out the cover art and see the track listing below!
Says guitarist John Petrucci about Dream Theater, “I see every new album as an opportunity to start over. To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about Dream Theater and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”
The nine-track disc was recorded at Cove City Studio in Glen Cove, Long Island, with guitarist Petrucci producing and Richard Chycki engineering and mixing. It’s the band’s second album with drummer Mike Mangini, and the first one on which he was a part of the writing process from day one.
In January, Petrucci said of Mangini’s work, “When people hear the drumming on this album, they’re gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn’t there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”
The track listing for Dream Theater is as follows:
1. False Awakening Suite
i. Sleep Paralysis
ii. Night Terrors
iii. Lucid Dream
2. The Enemy Inside
3. The Looking Glass
4. Enigma Machine
5. The Bigger Picture
6. Behind the Veil
7. Surrender to Reason
8. Along for the Ride
9. Illumination Theory
i. Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire
ii. Live, Die, Kill
iii. The Embracing Circle
iv. The Pursuit of Truth
v. Surrender, Trust & Passion
Dream Theater will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180 gram double LP, and a limited edition boxed set. Pre-orders are scheduled to launch in July at the Roadrunner Webstore.
Dream Theater will be on tour in Europe in January and February 2014, and in North America in March 2014.
