0 Bad Company’s Desolation Angels Remembered In New App and eBook
A new one-dollar app and eBook tell the story of the making of Bad Company’s 1979 album Desolation Angels.
From loud rocker to delicate acoustic song, the quality within Desolation Angels was across the board.
Author Martin Popoff explains:
“Well, yes, snuck this one in as part of my new Ye Olde Metal “chapter” series although it ain’t too heavy. But Bad Company was considered somewhat of a hard rock band back in all of the ’70s, and this is the one I connected with the most, Desolation Angels Swan Songing around with In Through The Out Door, both records struck by a certain ennui.
“Turns out it’s a bit of a band favourite as well, and here’s the record’s story, as told by Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke.
“This one’s particularly packed with pictures, photography courtesy of Rich Galbraith, and memorabilia.”
Ye Olde Metal: Bad Company’s Desolation Angels is available as a 27-page eBook in high-resolution PDF format from www.zunior.com and as an app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch in the iTunes App store:

Y&T’s Black Tiger, Motörhead’s Overkill and Whitesnake’s Ready An’ Willing are also available as apps and eBooks in the Ye Olde Metal single-album series.

With a warm summer breeze blowing in from Caribbean Sea, Bad Company rocked my summer vacation with an excellent set of live tunes that seemed perfect for the sand, and surf I enjoyed earlier this month in Mexico. No, Bad Company didn’t play on the beach I vacationed at (although that would have have been extremely cool). On April 2010, Bad Company performed live at the Wembley Arena in London. This excellent live show was captured not only on CD (sold separately), but on DVD and Blu-ray as well.
Live At Wembley catches Bad Company in fine form. The ageless Paul Rodgers sounds every bit as invigorating as he did on Bad Company’s 1974 debut. I couldn’t have picked a more perfect set of Bad Company tunes if I chose the set list myself. This live CD has all of the band’s hits, and the audio captured from this performance is near soundboard quality.
Bad Company’s Live at Wembley is easily one of the best live CD’s I have heard in 2011. If you are a fan of band, you owe it to yourself to check this out!

April 12 (pre-book order date March 18)
Rory Gallagher/Irish Tour ‘74/CD, DVD, Vinyl, & Blu-Ray
A major influence on a generation of guitar players including The Edge and Slash, Rory Gallagher stretched the limits of the blues with his ferocious guitar, compositional skill and guttural vocals. Now available for the first time on Blu-Ray, filmmaker Tony Palmer captured this one-of-a-kind artist on a tour through his native Ireland in 1974. The results are staggering, a visceral gut-punch of electricity, daring and showmanship. [MSRP $19.98 for Blu-ray, $14.98 for DVD, $13.98 for CD and $29.98 for 2LP]
April 19 (pre-book order date March 25)
Duff McKagan’s Loaded/The Taking/CD
One of America’s pre-eminent hard rock bassists, Duff McKagan has sold over 100 million records as a founding member of Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and Duff McKagan’s Loaded, which debuted with Sick in 2009. Follow-up The Taking, which will also be released on vinyl on April 12, features McKagan on guitar and lead vocals with bassist Jeff Rouse, guitarist Mike Squires and drummer Isaac Carpenter. “The Taking is the closest thing to a ‘concept’ record that I’ve ever been involved with,” says Duff. “Pain, loss, triumph, and redemption. Life. Bring it.” [MSRP $13.98]
Ben Waters/Boogie 4 Stu/CD
Boogie-woogie piano player Ben Waters wanted to honor Rolling Stones founder Ian Stewart and when word got out of what was to be a solo project, an incredible array of artists signed on. Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, Jools Holland, PJ Harvey, and a kickin’ horn section perform on material by Sam Cooke, Big Joe Turner, Albert Ammons, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Jimmy Yancey and Big Maceo. The album closes with a live cut from Ian Stewart’s Montreux Jazz Festival appearance with Rocket 88. This just may be THE blues album of the year! [MSRP $13.98]
May 10 (pre-book order date April 15)
Rory Gallagher/Rory Gallagher, Deuce, Blueprint, & Live In Europe re-issues/CD
Get ready for a boatload of original studio recordings from the late great guitarist Rory Gallagher, all to be re-released throughout the year.
The kick-off starts with Rory Gallagher, his first solo album (1970) after disbanding his pioneering power trio Taste. It contains raging covers of Muddy Waters (“Gypsy Woman”) and Otis Rush (“It Takes Time”) as well as one his career-long concert favorites, ‘Laundromat.”
The 1971 follow-up, Deuce, cemented his rep as THE hotshot guitar slinger who captured the attention of a generation: songs like “In Your Town,” “Crest Of A Wave” and “Used To Be” are but three of the 10 stand-outs.
His third album, 1973’s Blueprint, birthed classics like “Walk On Hot Coals,” “(Back On My) Stompin’ Ground,” and “Banker’s Blues.”
Live In Europe was recorded during his 1972 tour, and is the first of several legendary live recordings.
[MSRP $13.98 for each CD]
Christopher Cross/Doctor Faith/CD
On his first all-new studio album in 13 years, five-time Grammy winner Christopher Cross has changed it up from his usual keyboard base to a more guitar-oriented sound. Dedicated to Joni Mitchell “for a lifetime of inspiration,” Cross—for the first time in his 30-year career—goes profoundly topical here on material that resonates with the kind of attention-to-detail that only deep soul-searching can unearth. Vocalist Michael McDonald is on hand as is Cross’ fellow Texan, guitarist Eric Johnson. “This album feels not only like a new chapter to my career; it feels like starting a whole new book.” [MSRP $13.98]
Nazareth/Big Dogz/CD
This most Classic of Classic Rock bands (from Scotland) recorded Big Dogz with the intent to create something they vowed would be organic: just four rockers plying their craft and getting back to the kind of basics they spewed forth on such favorites as 1975’s Hair Of The Dog or 1979’s No Mean City. Lead vocalist Dan McCafferty is in great voice as he fronts bassist Pete Agnew, lead guitarist Jimmy Murrison and drummer Lee Agnew on a furious 11-song journey to the soul of rock’n’roll. [MSRP $13.98]
May 17 (pre-book order date April 22)
Jeff Healey Band/Live At Grossman’s/CD
Recorded live in Toronto at the same venue that spawned the birth of the band itself, this 1994 set, culled from two hot nights, served as rehearsals for what would become their fourth album, Cover To Cover. With guest artists Pat Rush on rhythm and slide guitar and harmonica man Michael Pickett, the Jeff Healey Band goes from Beatles to Hendrix to blues. Healey sounds positively inspired to be back home, his vocals and keyboard runs wild with abandon. [MSRP $13.98]
Heaven & Hell/Radio City Music Hall: Live! /Blu-ray
2007. Radio City Music Hall. Ronnie James Dio. Tony Iommi. Geezer Butler. Vinny Appice. Known collectively as Heaven & Hell. Their first U.S. show together in 15 years, this night was so transcendent, it spawned a tour, a studio album and plans for world domination but for the untimely death of Dio. Now, for the first time on Blu-Ray, that magical night—15 songs!—comes thrillingly to life. [MSRP $19.98]
Rory Gallagher/Notes From San Francisco/2CD
Unavailable until now, these are rare studio sides by the late Rory Gallagher that have now been unearthed! In 1977, six years into his solo career, the guitarist laid down these tracks with bassist Gerry McAvoy, keyboardist Lou Martin, drummer Rod de’Ath, violinist Joe O’Donnell and saxophonist Martin Fiero only to have the album in question shelved. Disc #2 consists of a 1979 power trio live show at The Old Waldorf in San Francisco with bassist McAvoy and drummer Ted McKenna. [MSRP $17.98]
May 24 (pre-book order date April 29)
Duff McKagan’s Loaded/Sick re-issue/CD/DVD
Originally released in 2009, Sick, by Duff McKagan’s Loaded, now comes complete with a 94-minute bonus DVD filmed at The Garage in Glasgow, Scotland and featuring a blistering band performance as well as the “No More” video, and five “webisodes,” four on the making of the album and one on the 2008 UK tour. Plus, two new additional bonus tracks have been included on the CD. [MSRP $15.98]
Willy DeVille/Come A Little Bit Closer – Best of Live /CD
Taken from over two decades of concert classics that this great American renaissance man recorded, Come A Little Bit Closer comes as close as one can to the kind of high-stylized idiosyncratic blend of New Orleans blues mixed’n’matched with Cajun flavor, his own Brill Building-styled composition, Mariachi Hendrixian flair, New York street corner doo-wop and classic rock soul punk as only he can fuse. And that’s just for starters. DeVille was such an original that he had no musical precedent whatsoever! There’s never been anyone like him. And it’s all on display in this 17-song Spanish stroll through a career that ended way too soon. Highlights? Every Song. [MSRP $13.98]
May 31 (pre-book order date April 29)
Primal Scream/Screamadelica Live DVD+CD, Blu-ray
Primal Scream formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1982 and in 1991 recorded what many rock critics have listed as one of the great alternative albums of the 1990s, Screamadelica. Screamadelica Live captures the band performing this album in its entirety for the very first time, at London’s Olympia in 2010. The Blu-ray includes an exclusive bonus of the Screamadelica Classic Album documentary. The DVD version includes a CD of the Screamadelica Live performance. [MSRP $19.98 for both sets]
David Byrne/Ride Rise Roar/ DVD and Blu-ray

June 7 (pre-book order date May 13)
Bad Company/Live At Wembley/CD, DVD & Blu-Ray
Recorded live at the prestigious Wembley Arena in London in 2010, these celebrated musicians are at the top of their game, playing their beloved songs as hard as ever in front of a packed and enthusiastic crowd. Founding members vocalist Paul Rodgers, lead guitarist Mick Ralphs and drummer Simon Kirke (bassist Boz Burrell died in 2006) are supplemented by guitarist Howard Leese and bassist Lynn Sorensen. These songs that have stood the test of time come thrillingly to life alongside some rarely heard gems in a 15-song celebration! [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray, and $13.98 for CD]
Sheryl Crow/Miles From Memphis/DVD & Blu-Ray
This stunning 18-song two-hour+ concert was captured last year at the spectacular art-deco Pantages Theater in Hollywood, California. Sheryl Crow, touring in support of her 100 Miles From Memphis album, performs a set filled with all her hits, deep catalog cuts and current songs, an 18-year trip. Bonuses include a “Behind-The-Scenes” segment wherein she preps for the show, introduces the band and soundchecks two more tracks—“Eye To Eye” and “Stop” (20 songs total). [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

UNITED STATES FORCES IS FUNDING MARCH CONCERTS IN IRAQ
HOWE to Perform From Upcoming New Release CIRCUS BAR
Releasing February 26th On Frontiers Records
Rock’s legendary voice, Brian Howe finds himself preparing for a history-making event and concert. Four March concerts are scheduled for Kuwait and Iraq and one is a “command performance” for the historic “Change of Command Ceremony”– Baghdad – March 12, 2010.
The Bad Company/Brian Howe/Kuwait/Iraq mini-tour is funded (and supported) by the U.S. Forces Iraq/Entertainment Branch. The “Change of Command Ceremony” marks the day the Iraq national police take partial command of Baghdad and it is the first phase of President Obama’s overall withdrawal of US troops – Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Baghdad-based U.S. Forces Iraq had Bad Company’s Brian Howe on “their short list”. They called group’s agent, who told the band there was an offer from the Iraq Entertainment Branch requesting Brian and the band to perform four concerts in March. The call came however, just as Brian was making promotional plans for “Circus Bar”. Quick and simple – “Circus Bar’s launch” would be postponed for a week or two.
This out-of-the-blue “command performance” for the troops was an honor the band did not expect that day. The concerts in Kuwait and Iraq were not going to be ordinary concerts – there is a risk element in the mix. Brian and the band decided that even with their commitment to a heavy 2010 touring schedule, they could not pass up this chance of lifetime to give back to our men and women serving overseas.
“At first news, I could not believe what I was hearing – me going to Iraq? What are they going to do – parachute me in and ask me to sing on the way town to scare the Taliban? Seriously though, the boys and girls in uniform have been there for awhile without any real Rock ‘n Roll that I know of. I could not pass up the chance of doing concerts in Iraq. This time Baghdad is going to be rocked in a different way.
We are heading to a city where bombings occur on a daily basis. However, this time, it will be our explosive rock ‘n roll show that shakes Baghdad – Bad Company style.
The U.S. Forces division and their production expertise are well-known. This isn’t their first concert. Also, Jeff Thornton of Lone Wolf Entertainment is managing the dates along with my management/booking agency, Artists International Mgt. (Boca Raton, FL.). So I’d say we have our bases covered – Iraq and Baghdad here we come,” Howe said.
0 New Brian Howe CD “Circus Bar” To Be Released In February. Audio Samples Available!
Frontiers Records is delighted to announce the release of BRIAN HOWE’s forthcoming solo album entitled “Circus Bar” on February 26th 2010 in Europe and March 9th in the USA.
Long regarded as one of rock’s legendary voices, Brian Howe started his career in 1983 as lead vocalist for Ted Nugent on the “Penetrator” album and fronting its band on the subsequent world tour. In 1984, drummer Simon Kirke and guitarist Mick Ralphs asked Brian to replace Paul Rodgers as the lead singer in Bad Company. Brian decided to accept the offer and continue the legend of the band. This was not an easy task, but along with Kirke and Ralphs, Brian created, wrote, recorded and toured for the following 10 years, headlining every major venue around the globe.
Along with Bad Company’s highly acclaimed 1993 live CD “What You Hear Is What You Get – The Best of Bad Company – Live“, Brian wrote and sold with Bad Company something like 19 million of records, highlighted by such radio and video hits as “Holy Water”, “If You Needed Somebody,” “No Smoke Without A Fire,” and “How About That,” – not to mention a few of the group’s previous hits as recorded on the “live” CD.
Thirteen years after the release of his debut solo album “Tangled in Blue” (later renamed “Touch” in Europe), Brian is back and ready to unleash his awesome new solo album entitled “Circus Bar”. “When I decided I wanted to make a new CD” tells Brian, ”I wanted to try to make everything memorable and enjoyable. Therefore I set aside a week for writing with my new producer Brooks Paschal and I decided we would go down to my favourite place in the entire world: Lake Atitlan , Guatemala, an incredibly inspirational place for me to be. We realized after three days that we had written enough songs for the CD and that took any pressure I had been feeling away and it soon became obvious that the CD should be named after that wonderful little bar where we spent our evenings eating, drinking and listening to the local music. The bar was started by circus performers and still has posters and pictures of all the great circus acts from throughout the years”.
Some friends helped Brian in shaping up “Circus Bar”, an album, which promises to be a career landmark for this amazing singer: Wayne Nelson of Little River Band dropped by the studio for a few days and also Pat Travers popped in and played guitar on “My Town“. “I didn’t want to have too many “established” musicians on the record because I wanted to keep the feel somewhat fresh and spontaneous”, explains Brian.
The album includes also two stunning – newly recorded – remakes of the Bad Company hits “How ‘Bout That” and “Holy Water”.
Produced by Brooks Paschal and mixed by Rafe McKenna (GIANT, BAD COMPANY, TESLA, TEN) “Circus Bar” tracklisting includes:
I’m Back; Life’s Mystery; There’s This Girl; Could Have Been You; Surrounded; Flying; How It Could Have Been; My Town; How ‘Bout That; Feels Like I’m Coming Home; If You Want Trouble; Feelings; Holy Water; Little George Street.
“I like to think that this CD is representative of an established artist with a modern outlook on what happening in today’s music scene” concludes Bryan. “It’s been 13 years since my last record and on this CD I have given them everything I have: music that appeals to anyone that likes big melodies with an edge”. 100% gold class awaits the faithful fans who will purchase “Circus Bar”, better believe it: Brian Howe is back to Rock !
1 Bad Company Reuniting For Summer Tour
After gathering for a one-off reunion last August, the surviving members of the original Bad Company — vocalist Paul Rodgers, guitarist Mick Ralphs and drummer Simon Kirke — will play a 10-show tour this summer.
The mostly East Coast dates, which kick off June 17 at the Seminole Hard Rock & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., will herald the release of Bad Company’s “Hard Rock Live” DVD, which was recorded at the same venue in 2008. The DVD will be sold at this summer’s concert, then released to retail on Aug. 8.
Lynn Sorenson, the bassist from Rodgers’ solo band, will step in for the late Boz Burrell, who passed away in 2006. The Doobie Brothers will be opening some of the shows.
Announcing the tour, Kirke said that “we had such a ball playing together again (in 2008) that we have decided to do some selective shows this summer.” Rodgers explained that the shows “are to thank the fans for keeping the music alive” and that the Doobie Brothers were invited to open “because I’ve always loved their music and them as people.”
Ralphs, who will also be playing reunion dates with his previous band, Mott the Hoople, in October, said that “it’s great to be back with Paul and Simon. We made great music together and had the time of our lives doing it. I’m really looking forward to getting back out there this summer.”
There’s no word on whether more dates will be added to the itinerary or not. Rodgers is expected to be on the road later this year with Queen + Paul Rodgers, continuing to support the group’s 2008 release “The Cosmos Rocks.”
