Edmonton, Kentucky rockers BLACK STONE CHERRY have selected “the southern bluesy love track” “Please Come In” as the second single from their sophomore album, “Folklore and Superstition”. “We’re very excited about this song being our next single as we’ve shot a KILLER video for it,” the band says. “Seriously… you won’t believe it!”
“Folklore and Superstition” sold 13,600 in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 28 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at Black Bird Studios, which is owned and operated by country music star Martina McBride. It was produced and mixed by veteran Bob Marlette (OZZY OSBOURNE,SALIVA).

13 AC/DC’s Rock ‘N Roll Train is Rolling Across the World Wide Web!
Trains have been a popular subject in Hard Rock for years. In 1974, “Train Kept a Rollin” for Aerosmith“, In 1980, Ozzy Osbourne gave us the “Crazy Train”, 1987 brought us Guns ‘N Roses‘ “Nightrain“. In 1989 Badlands offered up “Rumblin’ Train“, in 1997 Judas Priest unleashed “Bullet Train” and in 2006, Black Stone Cherry gave us “Lonely Train“.
By now I am sure you have heard AC/DC’s new single “Rock ‘N Roll Train“. It has been a hot topic on the internet. It is getting airplay on radio stations everywhere. What do you think of the new song? Will you buy AC/DC’s new CD Black Ice?!
2 Black Stone Cherry – Folklore and Superstition (2008)
Kentucky rockers, Black Stone Cherry have released their sophomore effort, Folklore and Superstition. I was extremely impressed with their debut record, and I wondered if the band would try to repeat the sound of that record or change it up a bit for album #2.
The first album sounded like a cross between the Allman brothers and Metallica. The heavy nature of the first album still shows up in places on Folklore and Superstition, but this record sounds a lot different from the first disc. It isn’t so different that Black Stone Cherry fans will dislike it. In fact, some people may like this one more than the first effort. To my ears, it sounds as if, Black Stone Cherry’s sound has matured over the self titled disc.
This album opens up with the rocking tune, “Blind Man” (see video below). This song is a great opener and does a good job bridging Black Stone Cherry’s last album with Folklore & Superstition.
Some Led Zeppelinish guitar sounds find their way into “Please Come In”. This hit ready song is no Zeppelin rip off though. This is great stuff.
Black Stone Cherry jams out on “Revered Wrinkle”. With so many bands forgetting how to play guitar solos in 2008, BSC shows them how to do it.
“Soulcreek” is the type of sing along anthem that will likely become a staple of Black Stone Cherry’s live show. This is a fun tune, and one of my new favorites.
For the first time ever, Black Stone Cherry breaks out the piano on “Things My Father Said”. If any song on this album could hit the mainstream, this is the one. This tune could easily cross over onto pop and rock radio formats.
For whatever reason the backup vocals on the heavy rockier “The Bitter End” gives the song a disjointed feel to it. I think this song would have been a lot better without them. I love the music, and the lyrics, but the back up vocals mess this tune up.
At The beginning of “Long Sleeves” I picked up on a slight Aerosmith groove similar to their cover of the Beatles “Come Together”. I thought the voice coder in the middle of the song was a nice touch. This is a pretty cool tune for the most part, although I am sure some fans will start picking on Black Stone Cherry’s song writing. One of the core lyrics in this song is “My Momma Always Said to wear Long Sleeves”. After the previous song, “Things My Father Said”, this may be a bit much for some folks. It works for me. I think its cool.
“Peace is Free” is quite possibly the most southern rock styled tune on Folklore and Superstition. I can imagine the lighters and cell phones coming out in a live setting for this low tempo number.
Do I detect a little Lynyrd Skynyrd in “Devil’s Queen”? You may not hear it, but I sure do. This song has a fat guitar sound that is awesome. This is one of my favorite songs on the the disc. You have to hear the guitar work on this song. Great Stuff!
“The Key” is one of the more interesting songs on this disc. It is one of the heavier tracks. About midway through, you will find some interesting guitar sounds. I wouldn’t call this tune essential, but it is somewhat unique.
“You” is one of those songs that has grown on me with repeated listens. This song dives into the southern rock pool once again. “You” has a good classic rock sound that seems radio ready.
“Sunrise” has a very modern rock tone to it, which may help it find its way to radio. This song feels like a filler tune to me, and is my least favorite on the album.
“Ghost of Floyd Collins” is a cool tune about a Kentucky cave explorer Floyd Collins who died as a result of being trapped in a cavern 50 feet below the ground. He was exploring the cave trying to find a new entrance for the Crystal Cave system back in 1925. This is a pretty cool homage to a person who is from the area where the members of Black Stone Cherry grew up.
As a whole, Folklore and Superstition is no sophomore slump for Black Stone Cherry. The band has turned out another very good album. I don’t think this album is as instantly accessible as their first disc. This album isn’t as heavy as the first one, and the tempo seems to have been turned down on the songs somewhat. Folklore and Superstition does have a bunch of good tunes, and a few that are growers. If you prefer to buy your music electronically, I-Tunes has three bonus tracks, “Junkman”, “Stranger” and “Bulldozer”. The big box retailers have this disc on sale for $9.99 this week (8/19 – 8/23).

2 Introducing The Parlor Mob
In the summer of 2007, The Parlor Mob signed to Roadrunner Records. On September 28, 2007 they began the process of recording their debut album at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain studios. Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, The Dwarves, Modest Mouse) signed on to produce the album. The recording was completed on Halloween, 2007. The Parlor Mob’s debut release is slated for spring of 2008.
The debut album, And You Were A Crow will be released in May, 2008, but it is available as a download on ITunes for $7.99.
The band has made their single, Hard Times, available for a free download at this location.

4 Best Concerts of 2007
I have seen quite a few live shows in 2007. The following are my favorites from 2007.
5. Vains of Jenna, RATT, Poison
VOJ put on a good show, RATT was a little disappointing, and Poison was the best I have ever seen them live. This show was well worth the money.
4. Jani Lane
I wasn’t sure to expect when I saw Jani Lane’s solo band perform last summer. Jani’s voice was in top form, and he sounded great. The star of the show in this concert was 17 year old wunderkind, Dario Lorina. This young guitarist is going to be a force to be reckoned with before long.
3. Frank Hannon and Winger
Frank Hannon opened up for Winger with his solo band back in February. I gained a whole lot of new respect for Frank on this day. His set consisted primarily of Tesla tunes, and a few songs off of his solo CD. It was an amazing set, and quite frankly (no pun intended), him and his band, blew Winger off the stage. Winger was pretty good too, but Frank Hannon in my eyes stole the show on this night.
2. Black Stone Cherry and Jackyl
Black Stone Cherry has been one of my favorite bands for a while now, and getting to see them for free is always a bonus. With Jackyl being on the same bill, this became a must attend event. The boys from BSC delivered the goods, but their performance was surpassed by Jackyl.
I have seen Jackyl several times, but I have never seen the band put on a show like this. Jesse James Dupree was in rare form, as it was his birthday, and the whole band was killer on this night.
1. Megadeth and Heaven and Hell
I have seen Megadeth several times over the years, but this was my first experience seeing Black Sabbath live in any incarnation. Dave Mustaine and company were great, but simply got blown off the stage by Black Sabbath. Ronnie James Dio proved once again why he is one of the best singers in Metal today. A fantastic show that I would pay to see again!
2008 is already proving to have a very busy concert schedule.

It is going to be another great year of rock in 2008!
37 Avenged Sevenfold- S/T (Release Year – 2007)
Avenged Sevenfold is a band that I have not checked out until very recently. I read that a band that guys in Black Stone Cherry enjoyed were Avenged Sevenfold. That recommendation was good enough for me. I have got a ton of play out of BSC’s debut disc, so I thought I would give Avenged Sevenfold a shot. Lucky for me they just came out with a brand new disc to check out.
I had no idea what this band sounded like until I watched the video for Almost Easy. The video was enough to sell me on the band, and off I was to seek out the latest by Avenged Sevendfold. Lucky for me, the local rock shop got a few copies in early. (This disc should be available in most U.S. retailers on Tuesday, October 30th.)
Avenged Sevenfold was once lumped into the Metalcore category, but don’t really fit into that mold anymore. Singer M.Shadows had to change his vocals approach due to throat and vocal chord damage, of which he had to have surgery to repair.
I was very surprised to find a Metal band that actually plays guitar solos that you can hear, and a vocalist with a very clean voice. How these guys managed to stay off my radar for so long is a great mystery to me, especially considering how popular this band is with today’s generation.
After listening to this record, I think this band may appeal to some older metalheads than today’s youth.
This disc is not perfect by any means. One listen to the track A Little Piece of Heaven and you may find yourself scratching your head in confusion. This sounds a twisted Pink Floyd circus that was given a metal makeover. This is a very strange track to me.
The guitar sound on Dear God has a country twinge to it, and quite frankly is a song that I will skip every time. ( I hope this isn’t the band trying to pull a Bon Jovi. ) The song could actually have some crossover hit potential on the radio, but isn’t to my liking.
Aside from those songs, I could not find many faults with this record. Synyster Gates guitar playing on this record is extremely cool. The Rev has plenty of double bass drumming to get you rocking, and Johnny Christ offers some chugging bass riffs to get your blood pumping.
Critical Acclaim is a very cool head banging tune. Almost Easy should be a massive hit for the band. If you aren’t hooked by the time you hear the killer guitar riffs on Scream your headphones may be broken.
As a whole, this is a pretty cool metal album, and one that I will be spinning quite a bit in the up and coming weeks. If you haven’t ever checked out Avenged Sevenfold before, give the new album a chance. I think you will like it.
