0 Viper – All My Life (Release Year – 2008)
When I think of Brazil, and hard rock, two bands quickly come to mind, Sepultura, and Angra. “All My Life” is the first CD I have listened to by Viper. A quick check of the band’s history, and I was surprised to find out that “All My Life” is the Viper’s sixth studio CD. This band is also the former stomping ground of ex-Angra singer, André Matos.
The opening track “All My Life” opens up with heavy riffing that would make Iron Maiden proud. Singer Ricardo Bocci shows a lot of talent with his vocals. I expected his vocals to be heavily accented, but he does a masterful job on the lyrics and has good range to boot.
I have seen Viper classified as power metal on some of their previous releases, All My Life, might fall a little closer to progressive metal than power metal. In fact, there are times when this music dabbles in the melodic rock area. Nonetheless, Felipe Machado and Val Santos whip out some tasty six string action on this disc that hard rock and metal fans are sure to love. As an added bonus, former Viper and Angra singer André Matos makes a guest appearance, and handles the vocals on the very cool tune “Love is All”.
The musicianship surprised me on this CD. I was surprised that a band this good, has escaped my attention until now. I will definitely be seeking out some of their previous releases after hearing this one.
You can only purchase “All My Life” as an import disc. You can purchase this CD, at this link. Hopefully, this disc will get some U.S. distribution. Music this good needs to be heard!.

2 Shadowside – Theatre of Shadows (Release Year – 2007)
The Brazilian metal band Shadowside, has been together since 2001, but thanks to Chavis Records, they are starting to make a name for themselves in the United States now.
Theatre of Shadows has been out since 2006, but Chavis Records took a chance a putting this out in the U.S. Market, and I am thankful they did.
Usually, I am not too fond, of metal acts fronted by a female singer. There are a few exceptions to that rule, and Shadowside is one of them. Dani Nolden has an extremely cool, raw voice that is well suited to Shadowside’s style of metal. In fact, her voice is quite unlike anything I have heard before.
At times Theatre of Shadows trades off between Heavy and Power Metal. Some songs have keyboards for an extra melodic layer to the music. The keyboards don’t over power the music, and they are not present through the whole album. There are plenty of double bass drumming throughout this record that will be a catalyst for a massive amount of head banging.
As a whole, I thought Theatre of Shadows was a pretty solid metal album, and a pretty nice introduction to U.S. fans who have not heard them before. Metal fans will certainly want to check the band out when they take the stage at Rocklahoma on Sunday Afternoon, July 13th, 2008.
The Chavis Records version of Theatre of Shadows has a cool cover of the DIO tune, Rainbow in the Dark, as a bonus track. You preview songs off of Theater of Shadows at Shadowside’s myspace page here. Go check them out, they might surprise you!
