EARMUSIC & EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE

DEEP PURPLE
LIMITED EDITION NOW WHAT?! GOLD EDITION 2CD AND BOXED SET

CHART-BREAKING ALBUM NOW ENHANCED WITH BONUS LIVE CD “THE NOW WHAT?! LIVE TAPES”  —
OVER ONE HOUR OF LIVE MUSIC

~JANUARY 21, 2014~
NOW What?!, the 19th studio album from Deep Purple, reached Gold Status in Germany, Russia, Czech Republic and Poland, not to mention the fact the band has made a very much deserved return to the British Top-20 for the first time in 20 years. To celebrate the success of the album and the support of one of the greatest fan bases known in rock history, NOW What?! will be released on January 21, 2014 as a Golden Deluxe Edition. [MSRP $20.98 2CD, $59.98 Boxed set] The boxed set will be available exclusively via Amazon.

NOW What?! Gold Edition 2CD, packaged in a luxurious gold cover, will also include two bonus songs on disc 1 (a stunning cover of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “It’ll Be Me,” and the rare B-side “First Sign Of Madness,” previously only available digitally and on the CD single “Vincent Price”), and an extra live disc. The bonus disc consists of over 70 minutes of unreleased live music recorded during the summer shows (“The NOW What?! Live Tapes”).
The live recordings show a band that still love to improvise like only few others can, changing the classic songs all the time and challenging themselves. Still, that magic sound is there, as if time could do nothing against it. In an era when live albums are too often not much more than a studio exercise, one cannot help admiring the musicianship and the groove coming out of the speakers, especially considering that the record shows exactly what came out of the amplifiers on those nights. Great care has been paid to present this extra disc in a stunning hi-fi quality, still preserving its authenticity. The studio album and this exceptional live album are sold together with the inclusion of a brand new booklet to support the second disc, with notes by Ian Gillan.

The NOW What ?! Boxed Set includes The NOW What?! Live Tapes, a DVD with a 20-minute interview, NOW What?! The Singles (“All The Time In The World,” “Vincent Price,” “Above And Beyond,”), exclusive t-shirt (large), exclusive poster, and collectible sticker.

DeepPurple2012
Deep Purple have released the following video teaser for their upcoming as-yet-untitled new studio album, to be released stateside April 30, 2013 via earMusic/Eagle Rock Entertainment. Recorded and mixed in Nashville with famed producer Bob Ezrin  (Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Alice Cooper), this is Deep Purple’s first new album in eight years. Blending the spirit of the band’s 70s sound with modern production, the album promises to be a poignant mix of rock’s classic era and a progressive mindset.
“The title of our new album is still a question mark to all of us,” states vocalist Ian Gillan. “We have recorded a new album, and it’s a fantastic collection of songs. At the moment that’s the only affirmative point we can offer…”

DeepPurple2012

The title of our new album is still a question mark to all of us… We have recorded a new album, and it’s a fantastic collection of songs.

At the moment that’s the only affirmative point we can offer…”
-Ian Gillan, December 2012

Eight years after the release of Rapture Of The Deep, Deep Purple, one of the most important and influential British rock bands of all time, have confirmed the release of a new album featuring brand new studio material. This yet-to-be-titled album will be released stateside on April 30, 2013.

Following various songwriting sessions in Europe, the band recorded and mixed the album in Nashville with famed producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Alice Cooper and many others), creating a work that blends the classic 70s Deep Purple spirit with modern production and a progressive mindset. A few working song titles, recently revealed by Ian Gillan are “Out Of Hands”, “Uncommon Man” and “Hell to Pay”.

2 Deep Purple to Release New Studio Album in 2013

  • January 25, 2012
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

Deep Purple are very excited by the prospect of making a new and significant album. To that end, they have decided to extend their writing and recording period through the summer of 2012.

Commented Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan: “We know we will disappoint some of our fans this summer.  However, we look forward very much to our autumn/winter tour and continuing our worldwide tour with our new album in 2013.”
Durung a 2011 interview with U.K.’s Express & Star, Gillan was asked when fans might be able to expect Deep Purple’s follow-up to 2005’s “Rapture Of The Deep” album.”The fact is that we’ve been touring flat out,” said Gillan. “We did 48 countries last year. We’re getting so much off on that we just don’t feel the drive at the moment for writing.”

Gillan did reveal, though, that Deep Purple convened for a mini writing session earlier in the year.

“We were in Spain for a little while and we had a week off,” he said. “We spent most of the time in the bar, to be honest with you. It was a good session, but nothing absolutely dynamic came out of it.

“I think to get some progress as far as an album’s concerned you’ve got to have a target, you’ve got to work to a date, and that gives you pressure. If you’ve got the pressure, you get stuff done. We don’t have a plan, to be honest.

“Things have always been chaos, certainly since I joined, and we’ve never been able to plan anything. If we’d been able to make plans, we’d probably have retired by now!”

“People like to do stuff that they’re good at, that they enjoy, that they get something out of. So while it’s fun and we’re all getting older and bits are dropping off here and there, it’s still great. I think there probably will be another album.

“And because we’re not doing an album (right now) doesn’t mean I don’t write every day. It’s a day off today and for me it’s a full day at the office. This morning is interviews and this afternoon I’ve got two or three interesting pieces I’m working on at the moment. I write every day and so when I do come round to making an album there’s never a shortage of what I call color material.”

Deep Purple’s 18th studio album, “Rapture of the Deep”, was released in November 2005. It was the fourth studio CD from Deep Purple since guitarist Steve Morse joined the band in 1994. It was also the second album to feature veteran keyboardist Don Airey.

“Rapture of the Deep” was produced by Mike Bradford, who also worked on the band’s previous release, 2003’s “Bananas”.

11 Former Deep Purple Keyboardist Jon Lord Fighting Cancer

  • August 9, 2011
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

Former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord has posted the following message on his website today:

“I would like all my friends, followers, fans and fellow travelers to know that I am fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure. I shall of course be continuing to write music – in my world it just has to be part of the therapy – and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year.

God bless and see you soon, Jon.”

Lord’s webmaster states: “May we also, at Jon’s request, ask if everyone could please respect his need for privacy so that he can spend time with his family (and his music). Thank you.”

2 Deep Purple – S/T (1969) Reissue (2011)

  • · CD Reviews A-H · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Video

In 2011, Eagle Rock Entertainment has released not one, but all three of the Deep Purple CDs with the Mark I lineup. Deep Purple’s self titled album was the least successful album of the Mark I lineup.  The end result was the band shifting to a heavier sound, and eventual joining of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover.

The lack of chart success is by no means a reason to not check this CD out.  There are a bunch of interesting moments such as the epic twelve-plus minute song “April”, the rockin’ psychedelic jams of, “The Painter”, “Why Didn’t Rosemary?” and “Bird Has Flown”, plus the original released single “Emmaretta”.

If you like bonus tracks, this re-issue has four of them to sink your ears on. You get three versions as originally performed on the BBC, the other is a B-side version of the song “The Bird Has Flown” that was originally found on the B-side of the “Emaretta” single.

If you are a rock fan that loves to hear deep cuts from bands that rarely ever get radio play, you are going to love this album.  The self titled album may have caused changes in the Deep Purple lineup, but it is interesting listen, and one should be in every Deep Purple fan’s collection.

Rating: Out of 10

Track Listing:
1.) Chasing Shadows
2.) Blind
3.) Lalena
4.) Fault Line

9.) The Bird Has Flown (alterntive b-side version)
10.) Emmaretta (single a-side)

12.) Lalena (BBC radio session June 6, 1969)
13.) The Painter (BBC radio session June 6, 1969)

0 EAGLE DIGS DEEP INTO DEEP PURPLE WITH FOUR LIVE DOUBLE-DISCS ON AUGUST 16:

  • August 4, 2011
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live in London and MK III: The Final Concerts

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the August 16 release of four double-discs of the deepest of Deep Purple’s onstage action:  Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live In London and MK III: The Final Concerts. [MSRP $13.98]

Scandinavian Nights, from 1970, features the most classic of Purple lineups, lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover. Recorded for Swedish radio while on tour in support of their groundbreaking In Rock album, the band, a well-oiled machine of epic proportions, rips through elongated versions of “Speed King,” “Into The Fire,” “Child In Time,” “Wring That Neck,” a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” (as a Paice drum solo), “Mandrake Root” and “Black Night.”
The same lineup In Concert 1970-1972 recorded two shows for the BBC. The 1970 gig is four songs stretched out to almost 50 minutes in true DP style like no other band ever — “Speed King,” “Child In Time,”  “Wring That Neck” and “Mandrake Root.” In the ’72 concert, they performed every song off their classic Machinehead album (except “Pictures Of Home”) including a 21-minute version of “Space Truckin’.
This is the first time Live In London has been released in the United States on CD. Complete with new frontman David Coverdale and new bassist Glenn Hughes (essentially giving the band two lead singers), the band were back home in London in 1974 performing in support of the Burn album. The band, indeed, burned through the title track, “Might Just Take Your Life,” “Lay Down Stay Down,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water” and, on Disc #2, “You Fool No One” and “Space Truckin’.”
A year later, with no idea its lead guitarist and co-founding member Ritchie Blackmore had already decided to leave the band, Deep Purple, with Coverdale and Hughes now solidly entrenched and performing magnificently, embarked on a European tour in support of Stormbringer.  MK III The Final Concerts excitingly documents Blackmore’s swan song with the band on “Burn,” “Stormbringer,” “Gypsy,” “Lady Double Dealer,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water,” “You Fool No One,” “Space Truckin’,” “Going Down/Highway Star,” and alternate versions of “Mistreated” and “You Fool No One.”

0 Eagle Rock Re-Releases First Three Deep Purple Albums On July 26

DEEP PURPLE’S ORIGINAL 1968 LINEUP COMES ALIVE AGAIN!

EAGLE TO RELEASE FIRST 3 DEEP PURPLE ALBUMS JULY 26 COMPLETE WITH

RARE BONUS TRACKS, STUDIO OUTTAKES, AND MORE!

It was the summer of 1968. Lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, drummer Ian Paice, bassist Nick Simper and vocalist Rod Evans, known collectively as Deep Purple, released Shades Of Deep Purple. The introduction to America was the Top 5 hit “Hush.”

On July 26, Eagle Rock Entertainment will re-release one of the greatest debuts in all of hard rock, Shades Of Deep Purple, in addition to its follow-up, The Book Of Taliesyn (originally released four months later that same year), and their 1969 self-titled third album. All three re-releases come complete with bonus tracks of b-sides, studio outtakes and BBC jams. [MSRP $9.98]

Shades Of Deep Purple indeed had many colorations. The high percentage of instrumentals immediately set them apart from their peers. Their covers of The Beatles (“Help”), Cream (“I’m So Glad”) and The Jimi Hendrix Experience (“Hey Joe”) are totally unique. Clearly, this was a band heralded for greatness.
The Book Of Taliesyn cemented their rep for swirling keyboard drama and the kind of electric guitar soloing that only the greats could pull off. This time the hit was a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Kentucky Woman.” But it was the creative reworking of another Beatles tune, “We Can Work It Out,” as well as a righteous rockin’ treatment of Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep Mountain High,” jamming on for over 10 minutes that caught the attention of the underground.
Deep Purple, the album, capped off a tumultuous year in rock’n’roll history (1969). Deep Purple, the band, was obviously meant to start trends, not follow them, which led them to become one of the most influential rock bands in history. Their cover of Donovan’s “Lalena” is true to the spirit of the song:  simplistically beautiful, one that singer Evans captures dramatically. With a mix of the psychedelic and the growing jam mentality that infused these tracks with dynamic musicianship, originals such as “The Painter” and “Emmaretta” alone carved out a hunk of Blackmore’s growing legend. And Lord’s liquid organ fills permeated the mix with the kind of high-octane quiver that was cinematic in scope. This is the album that gave a hint to the direction the band would pursue upon vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover replacing Evans and Simper on the very next album.

1 EAGLE ROCK TO RELEASE DEEP PURPLE’S PHOENIX RISING ON DVD, DVD/CD, AND BLU-RAY JUNE 28

  • June 17, 2011
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music
On June 28, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Deep Purple’s Phoenix Rising – a two-hour-plus revelatory documentary including 30 minutes of never-before-seen (not even on bootleg) onstage footage from Japan. Phoenix Rising will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and in a special two-disc DVD/CD package [Pre-book Order Date June 3, MSRP $19.98 for DVD/CD, $14.98 for DVD, and 19.98 for Blu-ray].
The release is cause for celebration amongst Purple fans due to the rarity of material. Extensive interviews with keyboardist Jon Lord and bassist Glenn Hughes tell the tale of a band caught by circumstance into one of its most controversial, extreme and exciting eras of its long career. Ian Gillan andRoger Glover were gone. A young unknown singer by the name of David Coverdale was recruited as was bassist Hughes. The results were the albumsBurn and Stormbringer (both released in 1974). But then Ritchie Blackmore left the band. Against all odds, they rocked on, recruiting Tommy Bolin(from Zephyr and The James Gang). The album Come Taste The Band (1975) documents the short-lived Bolin era, an era that all came crashing down when the band announced in July of 1976 that it was breaking up. By December, Bolin would be dead due to a heroin overdose. Nine years of silence would ensue.
The never-before-seen 30 minutes, “Rises Over Japan,” has the Coverdale/Lord/Bolin/Hughes/Paice lineup delivering the goods in 1976 on eight songs:  “Burn,” “Getting Tighter,” “Love Child,” “Smoke On The Water,” “Lazy,” “Homeward Strut,” “You Keep On Moving” and “Stormbringer.” (The double-disc package contains these eight songs on CD.) This segment is some of the only video footage that showcases Tommy Bolin performing in Deep Purple.
The 90-minute documentary portion, “Getting Tighter,” recounts the trials and tribulations of a band in turmoil, riding the rock’n’roll roller coaster to total excess. With its live images, backstage footage, never-before-told stories and original video material carefully culled from years of research, it’s a veritable bonanza for Purple fans and fans of Rock History. No stone is left unturned…and sometimes it’s not pretty. Gritty, truthful, wild, this is the story of an era in the 1970s that is simply unforgettable.

deeppurpleburnNovember 2008 marks the 34th Anniversary of Deep Purple’s 8th Album, “Burn”.  This disc features the MKIII lineup of Deep Purple with David Coverdale on Lead Vocals, and Glen Hughes on Bass.

Just looking at the band roster for this album, I shake my head with the crazy amount of talent that this band had.

“Burn” was the beginning of a bluesier sound for Deep Purple, and this new direction was reportedly one of the reasons for Ritchie Blackmore leaving the band.  Nonetheless, “Burn” is a very important part of Deep Purple and hard rock history.  This album introduced David Coverdale to the world of hard rock, and for that I will always be forever grateful.

The title track “Burn” is easily one of the best Deep Purple songs, and top hard rock songs of all time.  The mixture of Coverdale’s and Hughes vocals on this track are awesome. Not only are the vocals great, but Ian Paice may have laid down the best drum beats of his life.  Jon Lord’s keyboards really drive this song as well. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar riffs are fantastic.classicmetalreviewssmall

While the song “Burn” is my defacto favorite, I enjoy listening to this entire disc.  There is no doubt that this disc was highly influential on a large number of musicians. It is amazing how good this disc sounds when played loud today.  Each member of this band is extremely proficient in the instruments that they play, and were easily some of the best hard rock musicians of this 70’s hard rock era. The music just shines when blasted through your stereo speakers!

On the 30th Anniversary Remastered edition, there are 5 bonus tracks added to this disc. “Coroniaras Redig” which was originally only available as a “B – Side” track is one of the bonus tracks, as well as remixed versions of “Burn”, “Mistreated”,”You Fool No One”, and “Sail Away”.

Sometimes in order to see what direction hard rock music is heading in, you have to go back and listen to the bands that help form it.  It doesn’t get more classic than Deep Purple’s “Burn”.
