7 JORN – Dio (2010)

When I first posted the press release about JORN’s new CD Dio, my first thought was, why on earth is JORN trying to cash in on Ronnie James Dio’s death. I thought it was out of character for him, and wondered what was up with that. Then shortly thereafter a video was released, and I knew immediately that this CD was in the works long before Ronnie’s death.  Jorn Lande quickly released his own statement and  all was well.  New visitor’s to Hard Rock Hideout might not be familiar with the powerhouse vocalist Jorn Lande, and if you aren’t, you really ought to take a chance and explore some of JORN’s previous releases.  He is a criminally under rated, monster talent that has not gotten the exposure that he has deserved.

I have always described Lande’s voice as a combination of Ronnie James Dio, and David Coverdale. I found it very fitting that he did a tribute to the singer that influenced him so greatly. Very few people could cover the mighty voice of Ronnie James Dio, and Jorn Lande does it with a lot of passion and dignity on this new CD Dio.

The first time I heard “Song For Ronnie James” it put a tear in my eye.  It really hit home for me that Dio has passed on. It is a very fitting tribute to RJD. I thought it was cool that the band picked some of the lesser known tunes from Dio and included them here.  “Invisible” is a song off of the ultimate DIO album, Holy Diver.  Quite honestly, I always thought this song got lost behind the monster tracks “Rainbow in the Dark” and “Stand Up and Shout”.  JORN’s version of this song is totally kick ass. “Shame on the Night” is another song from Holy Diver.  JORN’s version could easily be released as a single in 2010.

I honestly believe Tore Moren could give Vivian Campbell a run for his money on “Stand Up and Shout” and “Don’t Talk to Strangers”. His guitar work is flawless on these songs.  I actually got goose bumps off of “Don’t Talk To Strangers”.  What an awesome cover!

“Lord of the Last Day” had me scrambling to find my Magica CD from DIO. I didn’t remember this song being THIS good.  The original is great, as is this version.

JORN didn’t just cover the Dream Evil classic “Night People”, they turned the tempo up a notch, and possibly made it even heavier, and added some new guitar licks while doing so.  Do I dare say this is better than the original?

JORN ‘s cover of “Lonely is the Word/Letters From Earth” was originally on the JORN cover CD, Unlocking the Past.  You get two killer Black Sabbath tunes in one on this version.  I loved this first time I heard it, and I still do.

Overall, JORN’s Dio is an incredible collection of covers that pays respect to the legend that is Ronnie James Dio.  In my opinion, “Song for Ronnie James” is worth the price of admission by itself, but the cover versions on this album are equally fantastic.  If you are a fan of Ronnie James Dio, you need to get this!

5 Frontiers Records to release “Dio”, JORN’s offer to the musical legacy of the great singer

  • May 21, 2010

The Norse God of Metal. The leader of the renaissance of classic Hard Rock on its highest level. One of the most prolific and sought-after singers of today, whose vocal talent has reserved him a place amongst the greatest giants in the history of Rock. This is Jorn Lande and now he offers his talents to honour the musical legacy of Ronnie James Dio, with his new album aptly entitled “Dio”, to be released on Frontiers Records on July 2nd in Europe and July 27th in the US.

Handpicking some lesser known tunes of the Dio era, along with some of the true classics, Jorn offers a fine collection of songs that present the music of the Man and the Artist, with a unique twist. In Jorn Lande’s own words: “Throughout the years I have had the privilege of  both meeting and working with many of the musicians that have inspired me on my musical journey. Ronnie James Dio has inspired me through decades, and this man’s influence continues to add colour to my creative spirit. Ever since the first time I heard his royal roar back in the 70’s, I have been fascinated by this extremely talented man’s creative force and dedication to music. His career has been going on for so long and includes so many great songs, that it was a challenge to decide which songs and what era to focus on. I ended up focusing on the DIO era”.

The album also includes an original song for which a videoclip, shot by Thomas Tjader (Pretty Maids, In Flames) was produced. Jorn says “I wrote ‘Song for Ronnie James’ as a tribute and a personal thanks to the man who has been my mentor for more than 35 years. This great man has affected my life and career in such a way that without his presence, I would not have become the artist I am today”.

The “Song for Ronnie James” videoclip can be watched here:

Either as front man in German metal act Masterplan, which has achieved great success around the world, or as guest in  spectacular projects such as Tobias Sammet’s “Avantasia”, or in the Allen / Lande’s releases, Jorn  Lande is today a trademark for quality Hard Rock music. “Dio” is the new chapter in Jorn’s history and a sincere and heartfelt “thank you” to a great and influential Artist.

“Dio” was mixed by Tommy Hansen, Jailhouse Studios, and the final tracklisting includes the following tracks: Song For Ronnie James; Invisible; Shame on the Night; Push; Stand Up And Shout; Don’t Talk to Strangers; Lord Of The Last Day; Night People; Sacred Heart; Sunset Superman; Lonely Is The Word / Letters From Earth (2010 version); Kill The King*; Straight Through The Heart (live). It has been a very slow news weekend in the metal world, so it saddens me to post the following info:

Ronnie James Dio, legendary vocalist for Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and Dio, has died after a battle with stomach cancer, according to wife Wendy Dio. He was 67 years old.

The heavy metal singer died early this morning. He was being treated at M.D. Anderson in Houston.

A Twitter rumor circulated Saturday night that Dio had died. It caught fire so quickly that his wife had to issue a formal denial.

His wife released a new statement to blabbermouth.net today confirming his death:

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all.

We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us.

Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.

Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.

In my opinion, Ronnie James Dio is and always will be one of the greatest singers in the history of heavy metal.  His has had some amazing accomplishments with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his solo band DIO.  Our condolences and well wishes go out to Wendy Dio, and the entire DIO family, and friends.  The metal world lost one of their greatest Icon’s today. Ronnie James Dio will be greatly missed.

DIO

Ronnie James Dio has to go the head of the class, when it comes to being That Other Guy!

In the case of Dio, his vocals improved the sound of Black Sabbath when he joined the band in 1979! I am looking forward to the band’s new release in 2008, with RJD on vocals.

The video below is from the 2007 Heaven and Hell tour, featuring Ronnie James Dio, Vinny Appice, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler.

Holy DiverAfter Ronnie James Dio left Black Sabbath, he started a solo career with a band under his own name, DIO.

Holy Diver is the debut by DIO, which features Vivian Campbell on Guitar, Black Sabbath band mate, Vinny Appice on drums and Jimmy Bain on bass.

To this listener, Holy Diver will always be a timeless metal classic. Ronnie James Dio’s ultra powerful vocals alone, makeCMRB this a disc for all metalheads to check out. Vivian Campbell’s playing on this record is nothing short of superb. His playing on Holy Diver is far beyond anything he has done with his current employer, Def Leppard.

Vinny Appice has always been a great metal drummer, and his heavy drum beats on this record are nothing short of perfect!

The songs Holy Diver and Rainbow in the Dark, are still two of the biggest rock anthems that Ronnie James Dio has ever sung.

Some other favorite cuts of mine off of this disc, are Stand Up and Shout and Don’t Talk to Strangers.

Ronnie James Dio has been, and forever will be one of my favorite metal singers. I have followed his career since the Elf days, and Holy Diver is still one of my favorite records by Ronnie and company.

If you don’t own this record….what are you waiting for? Don’t miss out on this Classic Metal record!

6 DIO – Dream Evil (Release Year – 1987)

Dream Evil Dream Evil is the 4th studio disc by DIO. On this disc, former Rough Cutt, and Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy replaced fan favorite Vivian Campbell on guitar. Did Goldy live up to everyone’s expectations? If anything, he exceeded them quite a bit. This disc is heavy and melodic. The sound is quite similar to DIO’s past efforts.

Night People is a high speed rocker that starts off Dream Evil right. Great guitars by Goldy and heavy bass strumming by Jimmy Bain.

Dream Evil is always the track that I remember best from this disc. I remember wearing the cassette version of this song out in my car stereo many years ago. It still sounds cool today. The keyboards give this song a Holy Diver, Last in Line kind of feel. Great stuff!

Back when this cassette first came out, I didn’t care for Sunset Superman very much. The lyric was too silly for me at the time. I have grown to like this track a lot more over the years. The guitar work on this song is stellar.

All the Fools Sailed Away is one of my favorites on this disc. This is one of the more melodic songs on Dream Evil, and one of two tracks released as a single. Killer stuff!

Naked In the Rain is a pretty good song, but the image of Ronnie James Dio being Naked In the Rain makes me want to run out of my house screaming.

Overlove is a exceptional high speed rocker. Vinnie Appice sounds like he is beating the hell out of his drums on this one. Great Stuff!

I Could Have Been A Dreamer is another great track that was released as a single off of Dream Evil. This is another classic DIO track, and one of my favorites.

Faces In the Window is a pretty good headbanger. This song is a stand out on Dream Evil that never really got the attention it deserved. I think this would have been a better track to close out Dream Evil with but they didn’t ask me to mix it…lol.

When A Woman Cries is a solid Dio track. It isn’t one of my favorites on this disc, but its a good track.

Dream Evil is still one of my overall favorite solo discs from DIO. Plenty of great tracks on this one that I still play and enjoy today! If you haven’t picked this one up yet, you can pick this up for $10.00 off of Amazon.com. Dream Evil is a bargain at this price!

Wait……you aren’t done….yet! See what the other the Metal Madness Knights are saying about Dream Evil at the links below: Heavy Metal Time Machine, Heavy Metal Addiction, and Pulses, Verses and other Flotsam!

0 DIO – Killing the Dragon (2002)

  • March 11, 2007
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · CD Reviews A-H · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Video

DIO - Killing the DragonKilling the Dragon is the 9th DIO studio disc, and the first to feature current Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich. Craig Goldy was not available for Killing the Dragon as he just recently had gotten married and his wife had a newborn child. Goldy did leave his mark on a few tracks, and has writing credits on Throw away Children, Rock ‘N Roll, and Push.

Doug Aldrich, on the other hand ,had played in quite a few hard rock bands prior to DIO, including Lion, Bad Moon Rising, House of Lords and Hurricane. He was the perfect replacement for Goldy at the time, and his guitar work on Killing the Dragon is awesome.

Killing the Dragon stars this disc off with a high tempo rocker. Doug Aldrich establishes himself quickly by showing off his mad guitar skills. This track sounds like classic DIO to me.

The heaviness continues with Along Comes the Spider. There are plenty of chugging guitars on this track. Sure the title and chorus is kind of silly, but the music is great.

Scream is one of the better tracks on this disc. Its a pretty solid song with some excellent guitar noodling by Aldrich.

Better in the Dark is an excellent upbeat rocker with a cool guitar riff by Aldrich. Dio sounds great here but Aldrich steals the show with some killer guitar solos!

Rock ‘n Roll is one an extremely cool track on Killing the Dragon. This song has an very heavy bass riff. Dio’s voice sounds amazing here. As a whole, this is a very heavy track, and a cool one at that.

Push is probably my favorite track off of Killing the Dragon. Aldrich reminds me of Jake E. Lee on this track. Its a cool song with excellent vocals by Dio. This song may be a little less heavy than some of the other tracks here, but it works.

Push

Guilty would have to be a close 2nd to Push as my favorite on this disc. This is another rocker that kicks ass. This track is also not quite as heavy as some of other tracks on Killing the Dragon.

The guitar work on Throw Away Children is absolutely superb. If it wasn’t for Aldrich’s playing, I would probably skip this track.

Before the Fall has a very Deep Purple sounding keyboard throughout the song, but the guitars are far heavier than any Deep Purple track. Once again, the guitar work is great, but I consider this an average DIO track. It is good, but not great.

The keyboards on Cold Feet give this song a less heavy feel to it. I like this song, but I don’t think I would have placed this as the last song on the disc.

Bottom line, If you want to hear an above average hard rock disc, with amazing vocals and stellar guitar work, you need to pick up Killing the Dragon. There are at least 4 songs on this disc that are mainstays on my play list today. DIO fans should not hesitate picking this up.

1 DIO – Holy Diver Live – DVD Review

  • · Music DVD Reviews

Holy Diver Live Holy Diver Live is a DVD of a live concert performed at the tail end of Dio’s Master of the Moon tour in 2005. In this concert, Ronnie has an all star band (most of which might consider a supergroup), featuring Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot) on bass, Doug Aldrich (Lion, Whitesnake) on guitar, Simon Wright (AC/DC) on drums and long time Dio keyboardist, Scott Warren.

In this concert, this band performed the entire Holy Diver disc, as well as other hits from Ronnie James Dio, and a couple of Black Sabbath tunes for good measure. The band is in fine form, and Ronnie James Dio sounds great as always.

This concert is full of awesome guitar solos, kick ass drumming, great vocals and more mano cornuta’s than you will be able to count. You also get some bonus interviews by the whole band, which was cool all by itself.

This is a 2 hour concert for the minimal price of a new CD. This dvd is well worth picking up, especially if you like to watch live rock shows from time to time. If you like the performance in the video below, by all means, pick this up!
