0 Don Felder, Foreigner and Styx – Soundtrack of Summer Review & Photo Gallery
One of the best classic rock tours of 2014 came to the Horseshoe Casino in Cincinnati Thursday night. The Soundtrack of Summer features Don Felder (ex-Eagles), Foreigner and Styx. The show in Cincinnati also featured local opener Brent James & The Vintage Youth. This was the first time I heard Brent James, and I gotta say, I hope to catch this band again soon. They were great!
Don Felder was next on stage and I wasn’t sure what to expect from his live show. Felder and band did a full set of Eagles tunes including some of the heavier numbers, “Heavy Metal (Takin’ a Ride)” (from the Heavy Metal Soundrack), “Heartache Tonight”, “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Hotel California”. On “Hotel California” Tommy Shaw from Styx joined Felder on stage and traded vocals with Felder. Shaw is also on the newly recorded version of “Hotel California” that is on the Soundtrack of Summer available exclusively through Walmart. Don Felder was awesome, and I was glad that I got to see him perform.
I was surprised when Foreigner took the stage, as Mick Jones was not present. After the first few songs, the band brought Mick out and he finished the show. Foreigner sounded awesome. Kelly Hansen is such a superb vocalist, you would hardly recognize that he is not Foreigner’s original singer. At one point during the show, Kelly scaled the stage supports, and got the crowd fired up from death defying heights. Foreigner’s set included the classics “Double Vision”, “Head Games”, “Cold As Ice”, “Waiting For A Girl Like You”, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Urgent”, “Starrider”, “Juke Box Hero”, “I Want To Know What Love Is” and “Hot Blooded”. The Young Professionals’ Choir Collective of Cincinnati joined Foreigner on stage for the song “I Want To Know What Love Is”. I thought that was a pretty cool touch to their show.
Styx was closing act for the Cincinnati show, although Styx and Foreigner are rotating the headlining spot at select shows. I have Styx several times and they never disappoint. At this show, Styx pulled out a couple of old tunes that I have never heard them perform including, “Superstars” and “Light Up”. The rest of the set included the songs “Grand Illusion”, “Too Much Time”, “Fooling Yourself”, “Lady”, “Crystal Ball”, “Blue Collar Man”, “Come Sail Away” and an encore with “Rockin’ The Paradise” and “Renegade”.. Tommy Shaw and company sounded great, and I thought it was cool that pulled out a couple of old tunes for their live set. I wish they would do “Mr. Roboto”, but I digress.
The Soundtrack of Summer is a great summer tour, and one that should not be missed. You can catch this tour on one of the following dates summer.

1 FOREIGNER IS ALIVE & ROCKIN’ ON CD MAY 29
Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the May 29 release of Foreigner’s Alive & Rockin’, recorded at one of Europe’s most popular Hard Rock fests, the 2006 Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen, Germany. This 9-track concert, previously released on DVD only (Eagle Rock Entertainment) is now available for the first time on CD. [MSRP $13.98]
“My initial musical vision for Foreigner was to combine blues and R’n’B with British Rock and make it sound soulful and authentic,” says guitarist Mick Jones. “I’d grown up in England and had the English influence but I was also inspired by many elements of American music from Mississippi blues to country. Foreigner was the vehicle to get that musical blend across.”
That “blend” was never more evident than on this rockin’ night as Jones—with vocalist Kelly Hansen, drummer Jason Bonham, keyboardist Jeff Jacobs, multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel (guitars, saxophone, flute) and bassist Jeff Pilson—knocked out a crowd-pleasing set that included eight U.S. Top 20 hits including anthems “Juke Box Hero” “Cold As Ice” and “Hot Blooded.”
This most beloved of Classic Rock bands has been serving up the hits for over 30 years. With over 70 million records sold worldwide, they’re second only to Led Zeppelin on the Atlantic Records roster in total album sales. Jones, producer of 10 of Foreigner’s multi-platinum albums, has composed some of the most memorable riffs in rock history. After forming Spooky Tooth with Gary Wright in the early 1970s, he left his native England to move to New York in 1976 and formed Foreigner.

The album will be available for digital download, and will also be featured in a new three disc set,Feels Like The First Time, available exclusively at Walmart. This new release has everything for Foreigner fans, old and new. The current line-up of Foreigner, rocking since 2005, has revitalized the music of Foreigner and has made it truly feel like the first time, as many who have seen them perform can attest to. The Walmart collection is a tribute to the work they have been doing these past 6 years. The set includes two audio discs: CD One: Acoustique: The Classics Unplugged and CD Two: Juke Box Heroes: Brand New Digital Recordings of Foreigner’s Greatest Hits including a brand new single, Save Me, co-written with Mick jones’ step-daughter and well-known DJ & Musician, Samantha Ronson, and one live concert DVD: Live in Chicago.
Disc One: Acoustique: The Classics Unplugged
There is a first time for everything! This acoustic album featuring Mick Jones, Kelly Hansen, Jeff Pilson and Tom Gimbel, brings to you the Foreigner classics re-imagined in the studio, a first for their genre! Listen to the classics like you have never heard them before!
Founder Mick Jones says of Acoustique:
“My feeling over the years is that if you can write a song on an acoustic instrument, and it sounds good, you know you have a good song,” Mick explains. “The first time we approached these songs this way I was flabbergasted about how well they adapted back to their nucleus. It’s been an eye opener how stripping the songs bare brings fresh meaning and emotion out of them.”
Vocalist Kelly Hansen say of Acoustique:
“We were doing these live acoustic shows that were being broadcast,” he recalls, “and we got a huge response. It was kind of shocking and surprising, and also something that was really new for us. We’ve never really done that, kind of laying yourself out naked, without lights and amps or anything. It was a real different feeling and a challenge, so we came back and decided to record it.”
A high point on the Acoustique disc is the song, “The Flame Still Burns,” which was co-written by Mick Jones for the 1998 cult rock movie Still Crazy, where it was performed by Jimmy Nail. Mick won the prestigious English Ivor Novello songwriting award for this song. Also included is a tribute to Elvis Presley with a blistering version of “That’s All Right.”
Disc Two: Juke Box Heroes: Bran New Digital Recordings of Foreigner’s Greatest Hits
This collection of Foreigner’s greatest hits was digitally recorded this year by mastermind, composer and producer Mick Jones, sensational lead singer Kelly Hansen, bassist Jeff Pilson, multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel, keyboardist Michael Bluestein and drummer Mark Schulman. The set also includes a brand new song, Save Me, which was co-written with Mick Jones’ step-daughter and well-known DJ & musician, Samantha Ronson.
Disc Three: Live In Chicago
The 80 minute DVD features the band’s greatest hits in pristine high definition from their recent Chicago concert. It also features behind the scenes footage and bonus acoustic versions of some of the band’s classic hits. The concert will air on PBS through August and into the fall as part of the Public Television Rocks series. Catch Foreigner on the road now with Journey.

0 Foreigner on Rockline Tonight!
Not one, nor two, but three discs come with the new Foreigner album and it’s an impressive look ahead at a band with “No End In Sight” (good) and a chance to get into a live performance featuring the stirring new and current lineup. New may actually be a misnomer at this point as vocalist Kelly Hansen has been with Foreigner for four years now. If you’ve seen the band during that time you’re no doubt aware that this is the best they have ever sounded. Hansen brings a vitality and energy to the group that seems to have awakened everyone else, specifically Mick Jones, Mr. Foreigner himself. Somehow in this new configuration Jones has become a legitimate shredder on guitar. Somehow his virtuosity got buried in the “serve the song” style the band employed for most of its early years. Fact is, Mick kicks ass. Born in the same general area, within a couple of miles from each other in England, in the essentially same time period, the mid-forties, amazingly are Jones, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. The odds of that happening are akin to having a health care deal everyone likes by COB tomorrow. But where Page, Beck and Clapton (not in any particular order) went on to superstardom in their own individual ways, influencing thousands of players in the years to come, Jones became a session player and then moved to France as a member of Johnny Hallyday, that country’s Elvis. Hey, Jones was twenty years old, driving a Porsche and living in Paris with all the responsibility of a teenager with an open credit card. Things came quickly and seductively and Mick was golden…for awhile. But what he needed was a band, a really good rock band. He joined Spooky Tooth, a legit band, but with little recognition. It was in 1976 when he assembled a band of superior talent, three Brits and three Yanks…how about Foreigner? Three of us always will be, no matter where we are. But we feel the world didn’t know of the true talent which lay within until just recently.
Foreigner can be accessed at ForeignerOnLine.com where you can get a taste of what some of the new songs sound like, the album is available, but we’ll dive in and let you check it out if you haven’t had a chance on your own. The third disc is a re-mix album worthy of some attention as you’ll notice the lead vocals have a delightfully different timber. Nice, Kelly. The band continues to develop and grow, but with Jeff Pilson and Thom Gimble on hand there’s long term continuity and musical wizardry with this particular band. Then there’s a completely new album featuring a new songwriting team and a different direction. The album was produced by Marti Frederiksen and Mick’s stepson Mark Ronson, a tremendous vote of confidence for them as Mick has produced the likes of Van Halen and Billy Joel. The DVD of a live show which is included serves as a wakeup call. It’s the real Mick Jones absolutely cementing his rightful place in the pantheon of great Rock guitarists. Don’t believe us? Check out “Juke Box Hero” as it segues into “Whole Lotta Love”. Or “Urgent”. What a treat it is to see him really let go.
Talk about a nice package, this is a compelling release by band at a peak period in their storied career. Join us for Mick Jones and Kelly Hansen on the next ROCKLINE!
6 Foreigner – Can’t Slow Down (2009)
Finally!! Mick Jones has released a new Foreigner album with the touring lineup that includes Kelly Hansen (Hurricane, Unruly Child) on vocals and Jeff Pilson (Dokken, War & Peace) on bass, and Brian Tichy (Pride & Glory) on drums. If you are expecting a dirty, balls out rocker you may be a little disappointed, but not surprised because that is not what Foreigner has evolved into over the years, but with the release of Can’t Slow Down fans of such releases as 4, Agent Provocateur, and Inside Information will rejoice. Admittedly I was a little iffy when I heard Kelly Hansen was singing with Foreigner a few years ago, that was until I heard the Extended Versions Live album after that I was hooked. I will let everyone know this right now, Kelly Hansen sounds absolutely phenomenal on Can’t Slow Down.
The title track “Can’t Slow Down” gets us going on the right track, it has that classic Foreigner sound everyone knows and loves. I can see why NASCAR wants to use this foot tapping rocker. One thing Hansen never got a real chance to do in Hurricane or even on Unruly Child’s “Waiting For The Sun” was sing on some slower mid tempos and ballads, but on Can’t Slow Down he get his chance in spades and he damn sure makes the most of the opportunities. “In Pieces” is his first shot and he absolutely nails it, this song definitely needs a shot as a single, I have a feeling it will scorch the charts once it is released. Aside from Hansen’s vocals, Jeff Pilson lays down some very nice bass lines, but Michael Bluestein’s keyboards really stand out filling out the song, this is definitely one of my favorite songs on the album. The first single from Can’t Slow Down is next and “When It Comes To Love” is already on the charts, and this mid-tempo number will fit in perfectly with such songs as “Waiting For A Girl Like You”, “I Want To Know What Love Is”, and others. Some more nice keyboards from Bluestein and Tom Gimbel’s saxophone is a nice touch also. “Living In A Dream” picks up the pace with a little nod back to Foreigner’s 70s sound, love the horns laced throughout and Tichy’s drumming as well. “Ready” and “Give Me A Sign” keep the train rolling with two more solid tracks. I can’t see the guys not playing “Ready” live as this upbeat anthem would definitely get the crowd going. “I’ll Be Home Tonight” is another mid-tempo number made for radio, Hansen shines once again. “Too Late” is another nod back to Foreigner’s 70s sound and it could easily fit onto “Head Games” or “Double Vision”. “As Long As I Live” and “Fool For You Anyway” are two more tracks that really stand out on Can’t Slow Down.
Can’t Slow Down is a 2 cd/dvd set from Wal Mart, and like the other Wal Mart exclusive releases like Kiss’s Sonic Boom and Journey’s Revelation there is a remix cd of some Foreigner’s classics, if you have any doubt about Kelly Hansen filling Lou Gramm’s shoes I suggest you give the remixes a listen. Not to take away from the performances of Mick Jones, Jeff Pilson, and the others on Can’t Slow Down because they are sound great on this album, but for me Kelly Hansen’s vocals are what made this album. I’ve always been a fan of his singing but I think his performance on Can’t Slow Down may well be the best of his career. I’m already looking forward to this line-up’s next album, hopefully Mick and the guys don’t make us wait to long.

0 “No End In Sight” For Foreigner
Foreigner is taking a backward glance at its career this summer with
“No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner,” due July 15 on Rhino. The two-disc set contains hits from throughout the group’s 41-year career, plus a new song and three other new recordings.
Classic tracks on the set include “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Urgent,” “Waiting For a Girl Like You” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.”
The new recordings comprise recent lives takes of “Starrider,” which originally hails from Foreigner’s self-titled 1977 debut album, and a “Juke Box Hero”/”Whole Lotta Love” medley; an acoustic version of the 1987 hit “Say You Will“; and the brand new “Too Late,” which will be released as a single.
“I’m amazed that the songs do have that staying power,” Foreigner founder, guitarist and chief songwriter Mick Jones tells Billboard.com. “I don’t really listen to the old records a lot, so you tend to forget there are this many songs that made the kind of mark they have.”
“Too Late,” meanwhile, represents the first new Foreigner track since 1994’s “Mr. Moonlight” and the first recorded output from the latest lineup of the band, which includes Jason Bonham on drums, former Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson and former Hurricane frontman Kelly Hansen. Jones says there are also plans afoot for an all-new Foreigner album, hopefully sooner than later.
“There’s a long-range plan now that we really do have a great lineup of the band again,” he says. “It’s very exciting. Everyone’s committed to the long haul here.”
“No End in Sight” comes out the same day as Foreigner begins a nine-date co-headlining tour with Bryan Adams in Augusta, Maine. The group will also play its own dates beginning July 29 in Clearfield, Pa., as of now wrapping on the 31st in Jackson, N.J.
