Drowning Pool is back with their fourth CD in 2010, and the second with vocalist Ryan McCombs. Personally, I have always been on the fence with Drowning Pool. I have liked a lot of their music, but I have always wondered if they could top their 2001 debut Sinner. Their electric appearance at Cruefest 2 won me over, and I have been looking forward to this CD as a result of that show.
The band has definitely had their share of tragedies, but with this new CD, I thought for sure that Ryan McCombs would be the spark that would help Drowning Pool continue to grow with their music. Ryan McCombs actually sounds pretty good, and there are some catchy songs, but Drowning Pool’s latest opus is not without its problems. The grungy guitar sound has always been a staple of Drowning Pool’s music, and for this listener, it no longer works. Why? The guitar parts practically sound the same on every song. The song writing is pretty good, but the muddy guitar sound turns good songs into average ones at best.
Some of the highlights include the songs “Let The Sin Begin”, “Alcohol Blind”, the kick ass stadium anthem “Horns Up”. I can’t figure out why “Let The Sin Begin” wasn’t released as the first single, it is clearly better than “Feel Like I Do”(See Video Below). This song is an infectious rocker, and has a lot more hit potential, in my opinion. “Horns Up” might be Drowning Pool’s biggest rocker since “Bodies”.
Sadly, I felt like the middle of the album had too many songs that felt like regurgitated radio rock. There just wasn’t much to distinguish the songs as Drowning Pool. I was hoping for more growth from the band, and it just isn’t here. With that being said, the new album isn’t bad. I didn’t like this one as much as Full Circle, but there are some good songs to be found here. Chances are, if you liked the last couple of albums from Drowning Pool, you will like this one too.

Massive riffs, noisy guitars and a keen sense of melody push Fever into the hot zone of 2010 rock-metal discs. The British band’s visceral assault bulldozes most of the feeble lyrics, except in the case of power ballad Bittersweet Memories, a valentine that didn’t dodge Bullet’s high-school smarm. — Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

HELLOWEEN – “UNARMED, BEST OF 25TH ANNIVERSARY” TAKES A METAL DETOUR!
For 25 years, this pioneering Power Metal band originating from Germany, has taken their fans along a journey of 12 studio albums. From Helloween’s legendary 1985 debut, Walls Of Jericho, to their 2007 release, Gambling With The Devil, this important, resilient, multi-talented and influential band has many a song to choose from for their Unarmed, Best Of 25th Anniversary album. One can debate for a year and a day, as to which of their favorite Helloween songs were included or ignored for this milestone album release. Regardless, Unarmed is by far and large, the most grandiose Helloween album ever to have been created.
Usually, upon my hearing the news of a new Helloween album coming up on the Metal horizon, I begin to lick my chops in anticipation of more speed, power and old school Heavy Metal from this incredible band. Well, Metal truth be told, Unarmed is quite the Metal detour for Helloween and their worldwide fan base too. These classic Helloween songs from years long past, have undergone some major changes in their arrangements! Allow me to explain further… an untold number of composers, producers and arrangers all embarked on the restructuring of these 11 Helloween classics heard on Unarmed. Try this on for Metal size – the 70 Piece Prague Philharmonics Orchestra and the London Choir also play a major role in the musical identity of Unarmed!
Certainly, these songs do sound remarkably different, only this detour did not disappoint me one bit. As an old Metal wise man once told me… “change is a good thing”. Still, this is quantum change for any Helloween fans ears to handle upon a first listen to Unarmed. It’s like shifting gears while driving a standard, it’s all about instinct – while accepting such a dramatic musical change of pace. I became instantly aware from the first note of “Dr. Stein”, that I needed to shift my Metal soul into a mellow soul. “Dr. Stein” does play out as a Classic Rock song, now. With similarities to early 1980’s E Street Band, (minus The Boss), “Dr. Stein” is a knee slapping, foot tapping good time… courtesy of the horn section that really adds to the flavor.
As Unarmed plays out, the quality and sum of the musical parts far outweigh any distractions that I may have experienced during several complete listens of Unarmed. The distractions being – where’s the Speed Metal? Hey, this used to be a Power Metal song! And… the ultimate distraction of them all… could I possibly be falling over for this Unarmed version of Helloween? Metal be thy name! Metal as my witness, I have a soft spot in my Metal heart for this Unarmed chapter of Helloween.
For those die-hard Helloween fans that may not absorb musical change with Metal ease… do not despair for you most likely will not be alone. Fans will either love or (gasp) dislike what Helloween has embarked upon here. I just so happen to be an open minded Metalhead that upholds a love for music, thus my appreciation towards such a drastic change by Helloween is not an alarming issue in my Metal world at all.
Truth be told, Helloween has showed me why I have admired them as musicians first and foremost for so many years, their musical transition on Unarmed has been presented upon my ears, with the highest of quality standards and without question… credibility. Helloween loyalists will embrace Unarmed, as for other curious fans out there… don’t be afraid, take a chance on Unarmed, it won’t ruin your Metal soul!
One last interesting note: there is a hidden track on Unarmed! The song title is – “Why”. My question is this, why is “Why” a hidden track? There is absolutely no mention of this song within the liner notes either. An Unarmed, Helloween mystery that may never be explained!

Frontiers Records to release Germany’s Prog Metal finest VANDEN PLAS highly anticipated new concept album
The Seraphic Clockwork” in the shops on
June 4th in Europe and June 22nd in the U.S.A.
A good four years after Vanden Plas last critically acclaimed studio recording, “Christ O” hit the charts, Germany’s finest Prog Metal act is set to release its brand new album: “The Seraphic Clockwork”, on June 4th, in Europe and June 22nd in the USA.
Highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, “The Seraphic Clockwork” is a fascinating concept album, which not only shows the quintet’s exceptional technical skills, but also highlights their impressive development as songwriters. The new album sounds more multi-layered, progressive and metal-oriented than any previous Vanden Plas release. “I think that my penchant for music of the tougher persuasion shines through more than ever before on this album,” comments guitarist Stephan Lill, who – together with keyboardist Günter Werno and vocalist Andy Kuntz – make up the group’s creative triumvirate. He adds: “Hard riffs, elaborate keyboard and orchestral arrangements plus catchy hooklines come together in a perfect symbiosis which marks Vanden Plas’ own style. I feel that we were much more adventurous on with The Seraphic Clockwork than ever before.”
A perfect example which substantiates this statement, is the 13-minute track ‘On My Way To Jerusalem’, a little masterpiece within a homogeneous, self-contained album. The song takes the listener on a haunting, adventurous journey which comes full circle musically towards its end. From soaring piano sounds through hard riffs and versatile arrangements to atmospheric parts, the whole range of expressive forms which the Progressive Metal genre has to offer are present. On the other hand, ‘Heal The World’ with its melodic intro, subsequent heavy riff and catchy chorus, reveals the band’s affinity to theatre music and all its complexity, and is classic Vanden Plas.
The band’s fascination with classical history has left its mark on “The Seraphic Clockwork” particularly in terms of lyrics: the dramatic science fiction story of the concept album was penned by vocalist Andy Kuntz and chronicles a journey in place and time from 16th century Rome to Jerusalem in the year 33 A.D. The protagonist, after an apocalyptic vision, has come under the spell of an Old Testament prophecy and must travel back through the centuries to face his God-given destiny. “It’s about being unable to escape fate”, explains Kuntz, a master at making complex subject matter both fascinating and accessible to contemporary audiences. “Working for the theatre has definitely influenced the story’s depth. When you realize or reproduce your own projects on a stage, you learn a lot about dramaturgy.”
“The Seraphic Clockwork” was exclusively presented to the journalists in a press showcase held in Koln, Germany on April 9th. Some of the reactions to the preview include:
“Great comeback of Germany’s leading Prog Metal band!”
Mike Borrink – Rock Hard Germany
“Those who have been concerned that Vanden Plas might have lost their riff power over the last few years don’t have to worry anymore: their new album „The Seraphic Clockwork“ is a perfect example for a well-balanced mixture of intelligent prog tunes, heavy riffing and the uncompromising love for hard music.”
Thorsten Zahn – Classic Rock Mag Germany
“They’ve made us wait but one of the best and most respected Progressive Metal bands are back with the heaviest, most epic and diverse album of their career to date. Awesome stuff.”
Matthew Adrian Spall – Powerplay , UK
“The Seraphic Clockwork” is unbelievable, fantastic, great music with a great story. Vanden Plas are the Prog Metal kings.”
Marco Magin – Breakout, Germany
“Intense, melodic and challenging at the same time, this new offering by Vanden Plas has what it takes to please the most demanding Progressive Metal fans.”
Morgan Rivalin – Rock Hard France
The musical and lyrical complexity of “The Seraphic Clockwork” is certainly inspiring. Vanden Plas have proved again that they are the most imaginative and diverse of German Prog Metal bands and justly enjoy the highest international acclaim. It can only be a matter of time before this concept album also makes it onto the stage.
“The Seraphic Clockwork” includes the following tracks:
Andy Kuntz (vocals), Stephan Lill (guitar), Günter Werno (keyboards), Torsten Reichert (bass), Andreas Lill (drums)
COLOUR TEMPLE (1995)
THE GOD THING (1997)
FAR OFF GRACE (1999)

GET YOUR BUZZ ON
CHICKENFOOT ROCKS OUT MAY 4th WITH ONE OF THE MOST FUN AND EXCITING BLU-RAY AND DVD LIVE CONCERT RELEASES OF THE YEAR
Hilarious Bonus Documentary Showcases Supergroup’s Offstage Antics as Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Chad Smith Conduct – and Misconduct – Exclusive Interviews with Bob Weir, Adam Carolla, Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel, and YOU!
Tune into the Live Concert Webcast from Cabo San Lucas April 24th at BestBuy.com!
4th Single, ‘My Kinda Girl,’ at Classic and Mainstream Rock Radio Now!
CHICKENFOOT heightens the worldwide buzz from the rock supergroup’s incendiary arrival last year with the Blu-ray and DVD release of CHICKENFOOT: GET YOUR BUZZ ON “LIVE” — one of the most highly anticipated live rock ’n’ roll concert experiences of 2010. The Blu-ray and DVD, including an hysterically innovative bonus documentary, will be released Tuesday, May 4 by DC3 Music Group, LLC, following a series of virtual concert screenings at select theaters nationwide and a live concert webcast from Cabo San Lucas, set for April 24 (10 p.m. CST) at BestBuy.com.
Filmed with 16 hi-definition cameras over three sold out concerts, CHICKENFOOT: GET YOUR BUZZ ON “LIVE” offers fans an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience four rock ’n’ roll legends — vocalist Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen, Montrose), bassist Michael Anthony (ex-Van Halen), drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani – sharing their explosive musicianship and dynamic chemistry on-stage and off.
As fun as they are on stage, CHICKENFOOT is just plain funny offstage. That’s the uniqueness of the offbeat bonus documentary, jam-packed with exclusive, never-before-seen backstage footage, rare interviews and extra performance video. The band members unconventionally take control of the interviews by instead conducting — or misconducting — them in their own individual styles. Their prank victims are show biz pals Bob Weir, Adam Carolla and Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel, as well as the unsuspecting public, who get ambushed throughout the documentary man-in-the-street-style by Smith, asking whether they’ve ever heard of the band CHICKENFOOT and can recognize their faces in a publicity photo. You’ll be tickled at most of the answers, knowing the band’s debut album went No. 4 in Billboard and gold all over the world.
Hagar drops in on Weir at home by Hagar, and uncovers the last time the former Grateful Dead lead singer dropped acid and what gets his buzz on these days. Anthony shares backstage couch time, CHICKENFOOT merchandise and chicken wings with Carolla. And Satriani buzzes around venues on both sides of the Atlantic with “Joe-Cam” firmly mounted to his head before allowing Nigel Tufnel (alias Christopher Guest) some not-so-serious interview time.
CHICKENFOOT’s self-titled debut album, released in heat sensitive packaging, has sold over 750,000 copies and has been a Top 10 radio mainstay since its release last June. (The fourth single, “My Kinda Girl,” is at classic and mainstream rock radio now). The band embarked on a small North American club tour, performed in Europe in the summer and returned to North America to perform two sold out summer tours, followed by another in the fall.
The electrifying, hi-energy concert performances were filmed in hi-definition last summer by award-winning director Daniel E. Catullo III (Rush, Creed, Godsmack, Smashing Pumpkins) and mixed in DTS 5.1 Surround Sound by Mike Fraser.
The Blu-ray and DVD features one full concert shot at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix on Sept. 23rd, 2009, plus live segments from shows last fall at the Tabernacle in Atlanta and The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, plus a bonus photo gallery.

Christy Borgman from LA Woman Photography captured a few videos from Slash’s live show at the Roxy on April 10th. I have been curious to see how Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy would handle those Guns N’ Roses & Velvet Revolver tunes. Judging from the clips below, he does a great job. This fueled my fire to catch them live at Rock on the Range even more. Check out the clips below:
Sweet Child O’ Mine

If you are anxiously awaiting Ozzy Osbourne’s new CD “Scream” that is coming out this summer, I have a disc that you seriously need to look into. Hellfueled’s latest CD, “Emission of Sins” is packed full of kick-ass heavy riffs and hard rock that fans of Ozzy (and most hard rock) are going to enjoy. If Ozzy ever had a child out-of-wedlock, Andy Alkman would have to be it. Alkman sounds so much like Ozzy, it is scary.
Emission of Sins opens up with the hard chugging number”Where Angels Die”. This song sounds like a blend of Ozzy, and Black Label Society. This is a great way to start off on album. If this fiery rocker doesn’t grab your attention, nothing will.
If there was ever a song from Hellfueled that deserves radio play, “Am I Blind?” makes a strong statement. You probably won’t hear this heavy rocker in the United States, (unless you listen to Hard Rock Hideout Radio) and that is too bad. It ought to be cranked up and played on FM Rock stations every where. I love this tune!
Jocke Lundgren does a damn good Zakk Wylde impression on “I’m The Crucifix”. Lundgren has Wylde’s style down to a tee, including those pinch harmonics that many love (or hate) depending upon who you ask. This song shows the influence of Black Sabbath, and rocks hard!
Every time I listen to the song “A Remission of My Sins”, I hear something different. One thing is for certain, this song absolutely delivers. The pace oscillates between the mid tempo chorus, and super fast deep-toned guitar riffs that open the song. This could be the greatest song that Hellfueled has ever done. It is that good!
“End of the Road” and “In Anger” are two songs that have major radio potential. “End of the Road” is a heavy rocker, while “In Anger” has more of a modern rock feel to it.
The album closes out with an awesome instrumental track, “Moving On”.
It seems that Hellfueled gets better and better with every release and Emisson of Sins is easily their finest work to date. There is no official release date for this album in the United States as of yet, but you can purchase the mp3 download of Emission of Sins at this link. Check it out! You will be glad you did!

“Tattoos and Tequila” out in Europe on June 4th
anticipated by the digital only release of the title track single on April 16th.
Napoli, April 2010 – MOTLEY CRUE singer Vince Neil upcoming solo album “Tattoos and Tequila” has been signed by Frontiers Records for release on June 4th in Europe. The album’s title track will be released as a digital download and will be available April 16th in Europe at all digital shops. The music video along with the single was made available for download on www.vinceneil.net earlier this year, but now it can also be seen on the Frontiers Records Youtube channel following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PfWPtAsIF8
Vince Neil recorded the new album in the winter of 2009 together with his band, formed by bassist Dana Strum, guitarist Jeff Blando (both of Slaughter) and drummer Zoltan Chaney. The album will include 2 new songs: “Tattoos and Tequila” and “Another Bad Day” both produced by Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard etc), plus a selection of classic cuts from some of the Rock giants that have influenced Vince Neil throughout his musical career. The cover songs were produced by Vince and Jack Blades (Damn Yankees, Night Ranger).
In a recent interview Vince Neil stated: “This album has nothing to do with Motley Crue, Tattoos and Tequila is basically my life” and definitely the new record shows a new, yet familiar side of Vince’s abilities.
“Tattoos and Tequila” tracklisting will include:
Tattoos & Tequila (Album Version); He’s A Whore (Cheap Trick); AC/DC (Sweet); Nobody’s Fault (Aerosmith); Another Bad Day; No Feelings (Sex Pistols); Long Cool Woman (The Hollies); Another Piece Of Meat (The Scorpions); Who Will Stop The Rain (Creedence Clearwater Revival); Viva Las Vegas (Elvis Presley); Bitch Is Back (Elton John); Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers (ZZ Top)*

As frontman for Mötley Crüe, Vince Neil came to exemplify all things rock and roll: the sound, the look, the outrageous lifestyle. Neil’s unmistakable voice leads some of the greatest rock songs of this generation including “Shout At The Devil,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Same Ol Situation,” and the recent “Saints of Los Angeles,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award in early 2009 for Best Hard Rock Performance.
As a solo artist, Vince’s Top 200 Billboard albums, Exposed (which reached number 13 on the Billboard Albums chart) and Carved In Stone have spurred the hits “You’re Invited (But Your Friend Can’t Come)” (co-written by Neil with Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw), “Can’t Have Your Cake” (co-written by Neil with Steve Stevens) and “Sister Of Pain” (co-written by Neil with Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw).
When he is not performing or raising money for charity (the foundation founded as a tribute to Vince’s daughter Skylar whom he lost to cancer in 1995, to date has raised over $2 million to help combat childhood cancer), Neil is also an accomplished businessman overseeing his latest entrepreneurial efforts which include Feelgoods Rock Bar and Grill in West Palm Beach and most recently in Las Vegas; Vince Neil Ink, a Las Vegas based body art shop; Tres Rios tequila and Vince Neil Aviation.

Hard Rock, Glam Metal, Power Pop, Hair Metal. Whatever genre of music you could tag Reckless Love with, it would probably fit. The genre doesn’t matter, but the music does, and it is quite good. When I first saw the video for Reckless Love’s “Beautiful Bomb”, I knew we might have another great CD on the way. I had no idea it would be THIS GOOD!
If you want to know why H. Oliver Twisted aka Olli Herman left Crash Diet, look no further than his own band Reckless Love. The debut of Reckless Love exceeds the last Crash Diet effort by a mile. This CD sounds like it was recorded in 1989, not 2009. The music on this CD is has a very happy sound that blends elements from all of the biggest hair metal acts of the eighties. I hear the influence of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Poison, KISS, Van Halen and more when I listen to this disc. Reckless Love pulls this sound off, and does not sound like a cheap imitation. The band has a passion for this music, and this disc shines as a result. If you like sing along anthems with big guitar riffs, look no further. Reckless Love’s new CD is packed with infectious rockers that is going to appeal to a ton of hard rock fans.
Olli Herman’s vocals are much more enjoyable with Reckless Love, and Pepe is going to turn a lot of heads with his outstanding guitar work.
In Finland, Reckless Love have already released two singles, “Babylon Bombs” and “One More Time”. Both of these are favorites of mine, along with “Romance”, “Badass” and “Love Machine”. I won’t waste your time giving you a song by song break down. What you should know is, there isn’t a bad song on this CD. Reckless Love is as close to glam metal perfection as you are going to get in 2010.
This CD does not have an official U.S. Release date yet, but you purchase it through CD Inzane at this link. The price may be a little on the steep side, but this disc is worth every penny. Your only regret will come from not buying this CD sooner! I love this disc, and I think you will too.
If you tune into the Hard Rock Hideout Radio show tonight (3/31/10), you will hear three songs from this CD. Don’t miss it!!

VAINS OF JENNA introduce new lead vocalist Jesse Forte.
It was just 10 days ago that VAINS OF JENNA announced the departure of their long time friend, Swedish comrade and vocalist Lizzy DeVine. However, it’s a new day, change is now and we are proud to introduce to you Jesse Forte the new lead singer and front man for VAINS OF JENNA.
Jesse Forte was raised in Orange County California and comes from a musical back ground. He attended music school at MI, played in a slew of bands since a teenager and even admits he pan-handled on the corner playing guitar for money. Jesse says: “I am a performer first. Whether it be 5 people, or 5,000 – I am embrace that opportunity to sing and play music.” The bands newest member was born in Arkansas but moved to the West Coast at a very young age. Eventually Hollywood’s music scene came calling and Jesse started killing and thrilling crowds on the Sunset Strip.
“We first saw Jesse in 2009 when his band opened for us at the ‘Cat Club’. And he blew us away.” Says VAINS OF JENNA co-founder and bassist JP White. Jesse is unique for sure. Imagine Steven Tyler’s charisma and Chris Cornell’s voice mixed in a blender with a pair of nunchakus – and you get Jesse Forte. The bands new voice has studied the martial arts since his youth.
The Swedish rockers have had lots of success during their young career in the states. So, this was no doubt a big blow – but the band refused to lay down and die. “It’s not in my blood to stop doing what I started. I love music, I live music, and this is what I do.” Says Nicki Kin the bands key song writer and multi instrumentalist. Kin plays lead guitar, piano and has in the last year; even shared some lead vocal duty in VAINS OF JENNA. The band has lived the American dream by touring on the biggest of stages, appearing on the hippest TV shows, and gracing the pages of countless magazines. But that was yesterday, and today is a new day. “We embrace this change, and we welcome Jesse into our family.” Says the band.
VAINS OF JENNA first burst into the music world when Kin & drummer Jacki Stone were still in High School. Gigs on the weekends, rehearsals at night and school all day. Jacki says: “Thank God that is behind us, I never liked school much and had no interest to be a factory worker. I pursued music very early and have no plans to quit.” The youngest and self taught drummer has been playing in bands with Kin since they were in the 4th grade. Stone’s brother White has this outlook: “We’re not a Hollywood band or a Swedish band either. We’re just a rock band. We want to see the world. And I speak for all of us when I say – we cannot wait for the world to see us.”
The bands brand new single with Jesse Forte singing “Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead” on the MySpace. Play it now – video coming soon.
VAINS OF JENNA headline the “WHISKY-A-GO-GO” Saturday April 10th 2010 in Hollywood, California. A European Tour follows with dates booked in Norway, Sweden, England, Wales, Italy & more.

Any Metalhead will attest, (from what we can recall), that they had a pretty darn good time back in the ’80’s, so did Ron Keel. This man has seen and done it all – musician, vocalist, song writer, lyricist, composer… and he is still writing his own legacy in 2010. Ron’s most famous band KEEL not only jumped on board the Heavy Metal explosion of those colorful ’80’s, the original lineup is back for another hard and heavy go round with their loyal fans… both old school and new. Ron Keel is a smitten guy these days and there is more to this Heavy Metal veteran, more to this man, once you take in what he has to say. Oh, Ron Keel does have a lot to say too, taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to Hard Rock Hideout recently.
With the new KEEL album Streets of Rock & Roll, (released February 9, 2010), receiving it’s just praise from around the Heavy Metal and Hard Rock circles, concerts being aligned in support of this album and the KEEL NATION rising, Ron Keel is a man that is busy, happy and proud to be alive! Ron is excited about the present, reflects on the past, looks more to the future, holds friendship sacred, values his fans, respects and cares about the American troops both past and present, has a charitable heart, reveals his Heavy Metal and Hard Rock dreams and also has a message for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Walmart too… (phew), check it out:
HRH: So, Ron, how are you doing?
Ron Keel: I’m doing great! Keel is back! We just released Streets of Rock & Roll and I’ve never been a bigger fan of Keel in my entire life than right now!
HRH: You sound really happy Ron!
Ron Keel: I am! You know, back in the ’80’s, I used to want to go down in a blaze of glory. I used to think it would be cool to die young in a plane crash or something crazy like that. All those crazy thoughts go through your mind when your young. Now, I want to live! I’m 48 years old and I’ve seen and done it all and I’ve never felt better about life! I’m a husband, father and grandfather now, I want to make music, tour, do the things I love most in life and continue to Rock! I want to continue on with Keel and talk about this band and new album to everyone!
HRH: I’ll have to admit Ron, I really like this Streets of Rock & Roll album, it’s a great album. It Rocks hard.
Ron Keel: Thanks, I really appreciate that, I’m glad you enjoy it. It’s an album that I have in my truck right now, a great album to listen to while taking a long drive through the desert with the windows down. People are liking it, unfortunately Streets of Rock & Roll has been downloaded illegally already. There are ten thousand illegal downloads that were aware of in the first two weeks alone. It’s the other one million illegal downloads that we don’t know about!
HRH: That’s terrible Ron, it’s definitely not like the ’80’s anymore, where each album sold is accounted for.
Ron Keel: Sure, only back in the 80’s there were people out there buying chart positions. It gets real bad with how some albums got pushed up in the charts back then. It’s something I might want to touch on with my autobiography that I’m working on.
HRH: I’m sure I would be schooled on some of those stories.
Ron Keel: Keel was a young band back then, we were screwed out of money, we didn’t know any better back then. We probably sold a lot more albums than was being told to us, maybe a million more. It’s not like that anymore, I’m in charge now of everything.
HRH: Going in to record Streets of Rock & Roll, were there any pre-conceived ideas that were scrapped at the last minute?
Ron Keel: None. The cream always rises to the top, we just let it happen. Recording this album was a natural, easy, creative process. The entire album was written last year, after our (Keel) reunion and there was an excitement of working together again. There was no band meeting or anything like that. It was a six month creative process, it came to be where expressing two to three songs a day was happening and we recorded on June 18th of 2009. Streets of Rock & Roll was the greatest joy of my recording career.
HRH: Sounds like you are very proud of this new album.
Ron Keel: Definitely, it’s a reunion album, it was the right move and I have no regrets. Streets of Rock & Roll has all the great qualities of past Keel albums, the twin guitars of Marc Ferrari and Bryan Jay trading licks, big choruses, rhythmic duo voicings, power grooves, the lyrical content, strong attitude and fighting for what we believe in. Lot’s of power. Plus there are different tempos and key grooves, a whole different feel on this new album that takes you on a journey. The strong bond and friendship among Keel shows through these songs. Life felt very natural in the studio while recording Streets of Rock & Roll. This new album would not sound as great if not for Pat Regan, he is the best in the business, his state of the art recording techniques made this album happen!
HRH: Hold Steady, bravo for writing such a patriotic song! Are there loved one’s of yours serving or have served in the Armed Forces?
Ron Keel: Both of my parents served and I have many dear friends that have served or are serving. Back in ’98 and ’99 we toured military bases and that inspiration carries to this day! Everyday is a sacrifice for our service men and women. I have dedicated, to their honor, a free mp3 download of Hold Steady that is available on Keelnation.com. We appreciate and honor the service men and women, by giving them and the fans this song.
HRH: The song and the free download are commendable, Ron.
Ron Keel: Thank you. We really care about our veterans, I like to donate money when it’s available by taking it out of whatever comes through the office in earnings. I don’t care about having the extra money laying around, I’d rather donate it. Just recently, I wrote a check out for The Veteran’s Hospital in Las Vegas. My wife and I strongly support and endorse a special charity as well, it’s to pay for arts classes for kids with parents that have been either severely injured or passed away in war or service. Anyone can donate by visiting http://www.our militarykids.org., it means a great deal to us.
HRH: Again Ron, very commendable.
Ron Keel: Thank you. I have lived a good life and made my money. Donating is not going to hurt our bottom line.
HRH: Live, from Streets of Rock & Roll, is this a personal message from the heart? Sounds like it to me.
Ron Keel: Forty eight years of experience wrote the lyrics to this song. I thought of these lyrics while driving home from a gig one night. I never expected to live this long, I love my life and all of it’s blessings. I have also gone through a change in my personality. My thought is now… you get through the bad times to enjoy the good times. Live is a celebration of good stuff in my life. Let me just say, finding the music to fit the lyrics for Live was the challenge! The melody and lyrics came first, then the music. I’m used to writing or being handed the music first, then adding the lyrics.
HRH: Live came out just fine to me, it Rocks!
Ron Keel: Thank you, I appreciate that you like it.
HRH: I have read recently your statement, that you have some unfinished business to still take care of. What singer or musician do you wish to collaborate with as an unfinished business item?
Ron Keel: One band I want to open for is the Scorpions, on their farewell tour. Keel wants to play with the Scorpions! I am friends with Jon Bon Jovi, Keel opened for him on the Slippery When Wet Tour, so I would love to sit down with him and write some songs together. I also would want to write songs with Chris Daughtry, he is a special, strong and unique talent. I feel Chris Daughtry has bridged the gap between modern Hard Rock edge and old school mentality.
HRH: Those are some powerhouse choices of musicians and bands, Ron. Plus, I really hope the Scorpions read this and give you an opening slot on their tour! You just never know Ron.
Ron Keel: Thats it, plus it would be a dream to play with the Scorpions! I would want to sit down with both Jon Bon Jovi and Chris Daughtry, drink some beers and kick out some songs for an album. I think the three of us together, we would write some great Hard Rock songs!
HRH: (laughs) I would love to sit down with you guys and share a six pack while you write songs.
Ron Keel: (laughs) Oh yeah!
HRH: How come Streets of Rock & Roll is not at Walmart or Target?
Ron Keel: Hey, don’t go to Walmart to buy your music! I buy everything online, it’s all out there. Walmart has nothing for Hard Rock or Heavy Metal! Hey, if Walmart wants me to send them two million copies of Streets of Rock & Roll, no problem! Just ask me! The AC/DC Black Ice marketing campaign was incredible, what Walmart did with them was brilliant.
HRH: KISS Sonic Boom as well. They had the KISS kiosk.
Ron Keel: Yes, KISS Sonic Boom was huge at Walmart! I remember seeing that KISS kiosk.
HRH: You know what you need to get into Walmart besides CD’s, is a Keel kiosk! (laughs)
Ron Keel: (laughs) Yeah! A Keel kiosk! That sounds good to me!
HRH: Well, you know how it is Ron, I’m caught in Walmart, with the family, the CD aisle is a cool escape to hang out in.
Ron Keel: I understand, actually, I went into a Walmart recently and looked for the new Chris Daughtry deluxe edition CD. Walmart didn’t even have it!
HRH: What 1980’s moment in your career do you laugh most about now?
Ron Keel: The ’80’s were happy times, it was a non-stop grind with all of the arena shows. Everyday in the ’80’s was like the 4th of July, New Years Eve and Halloween all together! We had nothing but sold out shows in Japan. As far as remembering a moment where I can laugh about today… there were many crazy female moments.
HRH: Crazy female moments? Such as? Or do we use our imagination?
Ron Keel: (laughs) Yeah! Use our imagination! That’s a good way to put it! Actually, there was this one time, where a girl handcuffed herself to our tour bus door.
HRH: Gee, what happened to this girl?
Ron Keel: (laughs) Well, no one had the key to the handcuffs! I really don’t remember what happened to her! Honestly.
HRH: (laughs) That’s funny.
HRH: What band would you pay top dollar to see, past or present?
Ron Keel: Well, top dollar or no dollar, because I’m friends with many of the bands. I like to support my friend Bret Michaels on his solo tours as much as I can. Nickelback, only when they came to Vegas, I was out of town on tour. Chris Daughtry, AC/DC, and a Van Halen reunion. Bon Jovi just blows me away every night as a fan! Queensryche as well, as a fan!
HRH: What band or musician has been ignored too long by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Ron Keel: KISS! They are one of the five most iconic bands that ever lived! Don’t even get me started on this topic! I’ve expressed my disgust for that place many times in my past. Who votes in that place anyways? I’m not trying to throw The Who under the bus here, but, one hundred years from now, most people will say who is The Who? Not with KISS! One hundred years from now, people will know who KISS is and was! I’m not just saying this because Gene Simmons is a friend of mine either. Man, Gene Simmons’s kids will be running KISS, then the grandchildren will have the run of KISS! Their music, marketing and brand will never go away.
HRH: What song or album did you hear, that inspired you to become a musician?
Ron Keel: The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. I was two years old, it was February of 1963, I believe. The song was I Wanna Hold Your Hand. I remember looking at my parents and saying, this is what I want to do! I became so addicted and drawn to it at that moment. There were many milestone albums and songs, I devoured it all! KISS, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Bad Company and Led Zeppelin all inspired me. Later on, the edgier stuff like Black Sabbath I listened to. As a kid, it all goes back to the 45, those little records I would buy at K-mart. The top thirty songs on 45, I bought them all! Every week, if the top thirty changed too. I learned them and sung them all! My father used to play Country Music all around the house, that is where my Country exposure came from. The Van Halen 1 album changed the world when I was a junior in high school! When I first heard Van Halen, everyone was saying, who is this guy Eddie Van Halen? No one was around that sounded like Eddie Van Halen on guitar. No one sounded like Van Halen, it was great! Because of Van Halen’s overnight explosion, credit Heavy Metal in America because of them.
HRH: Those are really cool influences.
Ron Keel: The kids today, they already know about most of these bands because of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. These two games are exposing all of this great Hard Rock and Heavy Metal to new generations, our music will be kept live and fresh for decades to come.
HRH: If you could go back in time and rewrite a movie soundtrack, what movie would it be and why?
Ron Keel: I’m a music movie fan, I also like music biographies of famous people. I would not want to go into the past, I’d rather want to do something new. It’s interesting to consider, with all the t.v. and film work that I do. If I had to go back, it would be Spinal Tap. I would rewrite all the music and lyrics for that one! I wouldn’t mind contributing to a Rock movie as well. My favorites are Eddie and the Cruisers, Pure Country, Crossroads and Rock Star with Mark Wahlberg.
HRH: If you were to make just one more album, knowing it would be your last, what genre would it represent?
Ron Keel: An acoustic album by myself. I already released an acoustic album called Alone At Last. It was the biggest and most personal music achievement of my career. I sang the best of my career on Alone At Last. I want my next generation to listen to it and know that grandpa gave this to them, to know that I am at my happiest when by myself with a guitar and song. Alone At Last was the single most demanding project that I have ever done in my life. My fingers literally bled while making that album. Alone At Last is driving at night songs, through the desert. You can find it on CDBaby.com. Sabre Tiger is the heaviest music I have ever done, progressive too. Country maybe… it would be another acoustic album.
HRH: What is the common thread that has kept Ron Keel, Marc Ferrari, Bryan Jay and Dwain Miller together from the very start?
Ron Keel: Friendship. We never let anything get in the way of friendship, not money, women, drugs, nothing. We became Rock stars together, sharing the best times of our life together. Now we get to do it again! This Keel reunion is not about money, together we have already pumped so much money back into the business. At the end of the day, we settle our differences. We raise our glass to each other, brothers in blood is what we are!
HRH: Just like the song on Streets of Rock & Roll.
Ron Keel: Just like that.
HRH: Any message you want to say to the fans?
Ron Keel: Listen to this new record and enjoy it! It’s special. Fans of commercial Heavy Metal and Hard Rock will enjoy it. Fans can stay in touch with us by visiting online at Keelnation.com. The Keel fans are the people that helped me, helped us, to live a dream life and I cannot forget that. Twenty years from now, I hope the fans still listen to Streets of Rock & Roll!

Black Tide has released a new animated video for their song, “Warriors of Time”. Check it out below!
Vodpod videos no longer available.
On this CD, the band gets a little help by Crash Diet’s Martin Sweet. Sweet plays guitar on the tracks “Scream 4 Me”, “Stay With Me”, and the title track “Sex Drugs Anarchy”. The Crash Diet influence plays heavily on the songs on this disc, so much so in fact, that I believe that “Sex Drugs Anarchy” tops the last Crash Diet disc, “The Unattractive Revolution”, and could possibly rival their excellent debut, “Rest In Sleaze”.
In my opinion, the best songs on this disc, are “I Am Hollow”, “Scream 4 Me”, the title track “Sex, Drugs, Anarchy”, “Lay Your Money Down” and “Blood on the Bricks”.
The song “Something’s Gonna Give” kind of bugs me. There is a part of this song that is almost exactly the same as Cinderella’s “Somebody Save Me“. The lyrics may be different, but there are parts of the song where the music, and timing is practically the same. Every time I listen to this song, I want to sing:
“Put your money in a big house
Get yourself a pretty wife
She’ll collect your life insurance
When she connects you with a knife”.
Try it, the lyrics fit with the music almost perfectly. The rest of the song is different, but the similar parts are uncanny. There are guitar parts on this tune that would do Warren DeMartini proud, so I guess it is a toss up on this one.
The song “Stay With Me” is a pretty cool song, but the fade at the end of the song is completely annoying in my opinion. Even with these minor issues, “Sex Drugs Anarchy” is a pretty enjoyable hard rock disc. These Swedish sleaze merchants have a hot record on their hands. The band is making plenty of waves in Europe, it would be great to see them get some support in the U.S. as well.
If you are a fan of hard rock/sleaze and hair metal, you have to check these guys out.

Sister Sins’s new CD, “Switchblade Serenades” came with a huge sticker on the cover that said “Heavy Metal Album of the Year”. That is a pretty strong statement for a new band to make. They better have the tunes to back it up, in order to put something like that on their cover.
Typically I have a tendency to shy away from bands with a female lead singer. Once again another band quickly proves that I need to throw away all of my old notions against female singers.
Sister Sin’s singer Liv has a voice that falls somewhere in between Doro Pesch, Lita Ford and Brett Anderson from The Donnas. I like all of these singers, so I was quickly able to get into Sister Sin’s music.
Sister Sin’s style of sleaze metal sounds like a mixture of old Motley Crue, W.A.S.P., and maybe a dash of 80’s Ozzy Osbourne. What is most important to me is that the music rocks, and “Switchblade Serenades” does just that.
There are a bunch of good heavy rockers on this disc, with “One Out of Ten”, “On Parole” and “Beat the Street” being my current favorites. Sister Sin even pulls off a really cool cover of the Motorhead classic “Make My Day”.
“Switchblade Serenades” didn’t crack my top 15 in 2008, but if I heard this sooner, it probably would have. They are a definitely a band you should look into!
1. Beat the Street
2. Death Will Greet Us
3. One out of Ten

5. On Parole
6. Make My Day
7. Hostile Violent
8. Switchblade Serenade

Endangered species? Not quite – Rhino Bucket started recording a new album last April for what was to be a fall release. Well, Fall fell and Christmas came and went and no Bucket under the tree this year. It’s not cuz you’ve been naughty. We love naughty! So what’s the deal? Where’s the record?
To make a long story short, after laying down 95 percent of the tracks the “producer” went rogue, off the grid and disappeared with the hard drive, leaving both Acetate and the Bucket with a depleted recording budget and no record. Does the story end here… nope, no fuckin’ way.
Our label was relentless in their efforts to recover the recordings – that’s the good news. Bad news is they ain;t quite done yet, we still need some additional recording and mixing. See where we’re heading?? Yup, you guessed it. We’re broke and we’re turning to you, The Bucketheads, The Bucket Brigade, Rhino Nation, to help us raise some dough and finish this bitch (the record, not the producer).
We’re asking that the most dedicated Bucket fans purchase the new album in advance, which is what we like to do anyway, but this is a little earlier than usual. This will give us the funds to book the studio time needed to complete the project and believe us, you want us to finish this record! What’s in it for you? Well, besides hookin’ the boys up and being the first ones to get the spankin’ new disc, we have written a song about our latest “experience” and only those of you who pre-purchase will receive a special edition of the tentatively titled “Hardest Town” containing this exclusive track.
As is stands now, we’re looking at a May 5 release, but that depends on you! Either way we’ll ship out these special pre-sale CDs well in advance.
So, dig deep boys and girls and lets keep the new rock rolling!

Back in the 80’s, for every successful hard rock and hair metal act, there were at least ten more that didn’t make it big. Tonight You Rock from Santa Cruz, California is one such act, and one that hair metal fans should take note of .
If you are fan of the era of big guitar riffs, and bigger vocals, you ought to give this latest a Retrospect Records Release a look. “All Comes Down To You” takes me back to the 80’s era of hard rock when music was fun, and exciting.
“Are You Lonely” is easily the best song in the lot. This guitar work by Greg Michaels smokes on this tune.
The music on “Looking Out For Number One” reminds me a lot of the late 80’s band Valentine led by singer Hugo. Joel Valentine’s vocals set this one apart, and the end result is a very good, melodic hard rock tune.
Guitarist Greg Michaels rips it up on “Tell Me No Lies”. The guitar work on this tune is about as good as it gets in 80’s hair metal.
TYR covers the Elvis Presley classic, “Heartbreak Hotel”. I like their version of this song, it doesn’t really stand up to the original, but they didn’t try to replicate the song either.
Retrospect Records has digitally remastered these songs, and although I wouldn’t call this a top notch production, the quality is pretty decent. Each time I listen to this CD it seems to get a little better. TYR has a sound that reminds a lot of a local (now defunct) hair metal band from Cincinnati called “The Take” that I used to enjoy in my late teens and early twenties. The music on “All Comes Down To You” brings back a lot of fond memories of the great hair metal era. It is a shame that TYR didn’t get a record deal back in the day. The band could have been something special.
Hair metal fans ought to preview some of the songs on “All Comes Down to You”. You can can check it out and purchase the record at this link. You can also find TYR on myspace. Check them out! You will be glad you did.

Wow! What is happening over in Ireland?! There has been some seriously cool hard rock acts coming out of there as of late. The Answer, Glyder, Million Dollar Reload and now Jaded Sun are amongst the pack of new rock bands that are on knocking on the door of success.
The first song I heard from this Irish five piece, was their tune “Hey You” (see the video below). I liked the song and video quite a bit, so I immediately sought out this CD.
There is no question that “Hey You” is a good tune, but it is far from the best song on this disc.
“Gypsy Trip” has a real 70’s classic rock vibe. Singer John Maher reminds me a lot of a young Paul Rodgers. I love his vocals on this disc. Jaded Sun not only has a great vocalist, but also excellent musicians. Seann Gosker and Eorann Stafford serve up some wickedly delightful six string action.
Gavan Murry serves up an almost tribal drum beat to get the tune “Breaking Free” started. This is a hard driving tune with a killer upbeat rhythm. In my opinion, they couldn’t have started off “Gypsy Trip” any better than this.
“Crazyman” has some killer slide guitar and excellent blues harp action. I love the groove of this catchy tune.
One of my absolute favorites on this disc is the tune “Can’t Stop”. This tune has a cool blend of piano, slide guitar and catchy lyrics. This rocking tune is type of stadium anthem that ought to help make “Jaded Sun” famous.
“Positive” is an upbeat bluesy foot stomper with a cool lead guitar/slide guitar duo in the middle of the tune.
“She’s Got Class” has a cool Aerosmith-like groove to it. This is the best album closing song that I have heard all year!
Jaded Sun has a superb debut record on their hands. No classic rock fan should be without this disc.
Jaded Sun is:
John Maher – Vocals
Sean Gosker – Guitar
Eorann Stafford – Guitar
Damien Kelly – Bass
Gavan Murry – Drums

Four days. More than fifty bands. Two stages. Multiple genres of rock. It’s time to get wild. Workaholics Candlebox will rock the main stage at Rock Gone Wild. British Metallers Saxon and the Gypsy Pistoleros have agreed to cross the pond just to party with you at the festival. Rock Gone Wild is slated for August 20-23, 2009 in Algona, Iowa. Tickets are available now by visiting www.rockgonewild.com.
Forming in the early 1990s, Candlebox immediately broke from their Seattle brethren. While many bands from the region followed the grunge path, Candlebox made their own way. Blending modern sound with classic guitar rock, Candlebox created their own unique sound – and gathered an army of fans along the way. The band’s self-titled debut became a near instant success, spawning several hit singles including “Far Behind” and “You.” Candlebox are currently supporting their newest hit album Into the Sun, released earlier this year. Candlebox is Kevin Martin (vocals, guitar), Peter Klett (guitar), Scott Mercado (drums), Adam Kury (bass) and Sean Hennesy (rhythm guitar).
Leading the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Saxon formed at the end of the 1970s and created a signature sound that new bands still attempt to imitate today. Saxon released their self-titled debut in 1979, but it wasn’t until 1980 and Wheels of Steel that the band really began to take hold. Since the early years, Saxon has weathered several lineup changes and continued to tour heavily and record new music. Lead singer Biff Byford has remained a constant force in the band, bringing a balls out in-your-face Metal show to each and every paying customer. Be warned! Stand close to the stage when Saxon plays and you will be rocked. Saxon is Biff Byford (vocals), Doug Scarratt (guitar), Paul Quinn (guitar), Nibbs Carter (bass) and Nigel Glockler (drums).
The Gypsy Pistoleros are the world’s greatest flamenco glam band! If you’ve never seen the Gypsy Pistoleros perform live…get ready: you’ll never be the same again. The band is a mix of Brit charm, Spanish flavor and glam swagger. Lee Pistolero (vocals), Iggie Pistolero (guitar), Nasty Pistolero (bass) and Harri Pistolero (drums) are the Gypsy Pistoleros.
Bands already announced for Rock Gone Wild include Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, Skid Row, Tantric, Kix, Great White, Hardcore Superstar, Saigon Kick, Tigertailz, Lizzy Borden, Dangerous Toys, Helix, Rhino Bucket and Junkyard with many more to come!
Rock Gone Wild will take place at the Freedom Park festival grounds, located at 2507- 160th Avenue in Algona, Iowa.
If you build it, they will rock.
