Sometimes it is a mystery to me how some talented bands remain obscure, while bands of lesser talent went on to be the next big thing.
In the case of New York City’s Spread Eagle, they were not short on talent, but seemed doomed to fail the day they signed with MCA. I wonder if things would have been different if this band received a little more support. Their debut came out a little late in the game. Had this record hit two years earlier, Spread Eagle would surely be a household name amongst hard rock fans.
Spread Eagle is an excellent sleaze metal band that has a sound that I would call a cross between Skid Row and Guns ‘N Roses. The music may be a little derivative of those two bands, but it still kicks ass. Their debut album is filled with killer tunes like Broken City, Switchblade Serenade, Dead of Winter, and Scratch Like a Cat. Ray West has a gritty, abrasive voice that works perfectly for this type of metal. Paul Dibartolo plays his ass of on this disc.
Spread Eagle is highly under rated, and this CD is still worth seeking out. This CD was out of print for a while, but it was reissued by Lovember Records in late 2006. Grab a copy of this disc if you can find it!

In 2008, Rob DeLuca carries on in a new band called Of Earth, while Ray West continues on in Hostel Inc. Who knows…..we may not have seen the last of Spread Eagle yet!

Former SPREAD EAGLE frontman Ray West has launched his new band HOSTEL INC. Rounded out with members from two of New Jersey’s more popular bands — guitarist Ladd, bassist Chigger (both formerly of SMOKE STAR) and drummer Jeff Hardee (formerly of SYNDROME 8) — the group has a clear intention of making a massive impact in 2008.
With an East and West Coast tour already under its belts in 2007, HOSTEL INC. has already started out strong in 2008 with dates supporting GREAT WHITE and JOE LYNN TURNER. The next live date for HOSTEL INC. is February 22nd at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ.
HOSTEL INC. has three unmastered songs posted on its official MySpace profile.
SPREAD EAGLE burst upon the scene playing a brand of rock that came straight from the New York City gutter. When Paul DiBartolo (guitar), Rob De Luca (bass) and Tommi Gallo (drums) moved to the City and met up with vocalist Ray West, a new attitude was instantly born. While rehearsing/writing in an East Village basement for their first gig, rumors began leaking out to the record industry. The group was quickly snatched up and signed to MCA/Universal, then sent straight into the studio. Additional tunes for the debut album had to be written while recording was taking place. The self-titled debut — which was recently reissued through Lovember Records — featured wailing vocals and razor sharp guitar, demonstrated through songs such as “Switchblade Serenade”, “Scratch like a Cat”, and “Broken City”. The honesty of SPREAD EAGLE‘s debut release quickly gained the band worldwide critical acclaim and propelled them to the forefront of the genre. Four years later, after the release and touring of their second album, “Open to the Public”, the band disbanded and went about their own personal projects. Rob De Luca went on to play with Sebastian Bach (SKID ROW), JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB), OF EARTH, and OUIJIPIG. Ray West has been locked up in a studio in south Florida by way of NYC creating and producing powerful new music. Paul DiBartolo went on to score music in the motion picture industry.
