0 JOURNEY’s Neal Schon to Release a New Solo Instrumental Album in October on Frontiers Records
The Calling will be released on October 19 in Europe and October 23 in North America
Taking a detour from his main job as lead guitarist for Journey, the multi-talented Neal Schon has put the finishing touches on his latest solo album, The Calling, which will be released by Frontiers Records on October 19th in Europe and October 23rd in North America. Produced by, and featuring, Schon on all guitars and bass, The Calling reunites Schon with former Journey bandmate, Steve Smith, who lends his virtuoso drum talents to all 12 tracks on the new album.
Schon set up shop at Berkeley’s famed Fantasy Studios during a break from Journey’s busy touring schedule, and recorded the album, completely from scratch, in just four days. After overdubbing multiple guitar and bass parts, Schon recruited two keyboard masters to flesh out the music Igor Len, an accomplished classical, jazz and film composer who had previously collaborated with Schon, is featured on acoustic piano throughout The Calling album.
GRAMMY Award-winning special guest Jan Hammer (Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miami Vice soundtrack) recorded Moog synthesizer solos on two tracks – Fifty Six and Tumbleweeds. Recently, Schon teamed up with Dan Barnett (Journey: Live In Manila) to produce the video for the first single and title track from The Calling .
While celebrating the release of The Calling, Schon will be back on the road with JOURNEY as the band’s 2012 tour kicked off July 21 in Southern California and is scheduled to run through December, with most dates featuring special guests Pat Benatar featuring Neil Giraldo and Loverboy. Check www.journeymusic.com for updated tour details.
The Calling tracklisting includes: The Calling; Carnival Jazz; Six String Waltz; Irish Field; Back Smash; Fifty Six (56); True Emotion; Tumbleweeds; Primal Surge; Blue Rainbow Sky; Transonic Funk; Song Of The Wind II.
Song samples from The Calling can be streamed now on Neal Schon’s official website:
4 New Video – Journey – Resonate
I have to admit that I wasn’t a big fan of Journey’s last album Eclipse, but their new video “Resonate” will make me give the album a second chance. “Resonate” is a pretty good tune, and you can’t deny that Arnel Pineda has an incredible voice. Check it out below.
1 Stone’s Top Ten Hard Rock Albums of 2011
Top Ten Hard Rock Albums Of 2011 – I have listened to many Hard Rock albums released during 2011. There seems to be quite a few Hard Rock albums that are of standout quality, this past year for me. With that said, my “Top Ten Hard Rock Albums Of 2011” simply cannot represent the totality of Hard Rockin’ thrills I’ve experienced with my ears these past 12 months.
What my Top Ten list does represent are the Hard Rock albums I turned to most often to play… and play LOUD! I lean towards the “complete” album of songs, an album that goes further than just 4 or 5 great tracks. I gravitate towards the Hard Rock albums that psyched-me-out and made me feel very damn good inside. These are the Hard Rock albums that made a difference to me. A personal list it is and hopefully there are a few here you may agree with. Thank you for visiting Hard Rock Hideout in 2011 and supporting Rock ‘N Roll! Happy Holidays, Rock Steady and Happy New Year to all!

0 Tall Stories Returns With Skyscraper!
Tall Stories Releases Second Album, Skyscraper, on January 23rd
Steve Augeri, formerly of Journey, provides insight on inspiration for band’s much-anticipated release.
Tall Stories first rose to prominence upon the release of their self-titled debut album in 1991. At the vocal helm is Steve Augeri who previously provided the lead vocals for Journey, following Steve Perry’s departure from the band.
Formed by Augeri with Jack Morer on guitars, Kevin Totoian on bass, and Tom DeFaria on drums, Tall Stories represents a group of musicians who were exposed and inspired by such diverse sounds ranging from: Blues to Rock, Funk, Punk, Country and Reggae. As a result, their music isn’t typical of the standard rock genre.
“As a young, vivacious group of musicians from New York City, our inspiration came from spending time in Manhattan where music from all over the world could be heard within just a few City blocks,” recalls Steve Augeri. “We were fixtures in the downtown area, especially at The Bitter End on Bleeker Street, where on that small stage, graced the likes of: Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and George Carlin, to name just a few notable musicians who have performed there. Our band played there a few times a week, while writing and trying out material for both the first album as well the upcoming release.”
Signed by Bud Prager’s ESP Management (Foreigner, Bad Co., Mountain, Damn Yankees), Tall Stories’ first album was produced by Frank Filipetti (Deep Purple, Kiss, Foreigner). While the musical climate in the United States in 1991 was going through a metamorphosis of its own, Tall Stories’ debut album was a breath of fresh air in the melodic rock scene at the time. The band’s unique musical core immediately became a sensation with rock fans and critics alike.
A tour with Mr. Big followed, but despite the great response from fans, the evolving musical climate forced the band to take a step back and hibernate during that period. Steve Augeri went on to join Tyketto and then Journey but, along the way, the band continued to collaborate and write songs, while waiting for the right time to regroup as a band.
“After leaving Journey, I found myself reflecting upon my past to identify why I had gotten into this crazy business to begin with. I dusted off my 12 string, dug out my Beatles, The Who and Zeppelin song books–whose songs were the catalyst to my passion for music as a child–and it was then that I found myself again,” Augeri explains. “I think there’s a purity, an honesty on this record–not to mention a lot of great rock and roll.”
Tall Stories’ rebirth offers its fans the opportunity to partake in what would be the band’s second chapter. Due to schedule conflicts, Tall Stories hired a handful of stellar guest drummers to complete the picture. First, the talent of Rodney Howard (Avril Lavigne) contributed to “Stay” and “No Justice.” Then the legendary Bobby Rondinelli (Rainbow, The Lizards) on the bombastic “River Rise.” And last but not least, Nir Z (Genesis, Chris Cornel) on “Original Sin,” “Eternal Light,” and “Pictures of Summer” to name a few.
Produced by guitarist Jack Morer, Skyscraper stays true to the genesis of Tall Stories: music and songs that are as melodically rich and diverse as the band members themselves. From the opening track, “Tomorrow,” an uptempo song reminiscent of U2 and Led Zeppelin, to the final song, “You Shall be Free,” a Gospel number in every sense of the word, the new album is a musical tapestry of different colours and textures.
Steve Augeri concludes, “Although there was perhaps too long of a lapse between the first Tall Stories release and this album, we’re fortunate that fate and timing has allowed us to come back together as a band, and create music that inspires us individually and collectively.”
“Skyscraper” includes the following tracks:
Tomorrow; Clementine; Original Sin; All of the World; Pictures of Summer; River Rise; No Justice; Eternal Light; Stay; You Shall be Free; Superman (European bonus track)

79 Journey – Revelation (Release Year – 2008)
I must admit that Journey is a band that has fallen off of my musical radar for quite some time. I wasn’t a big fan of Steve Augeri’s work in the band, but was I glad that Journey kept going. Like the majority of Journey fans out there, I too am a fan of the Steve Perry era of the band. I had no plans to check out Journey’s new CD, Revelation at all.
I recently read Andrew McNiece’s review at Melodic Rock.com giving this release high marks. I have come to trust Andrew’s opinion over the years, so I decided to give Journey another chance.
In the U.S., Revelation is a Walmart Exclusive release, and is two CD/ 1 DVD set, for the price of one CD. Yes, you read that correctly. Journey is giving you a chance to check out the latest version of the band, with a CD of new material, a CD of re-recorded hits with Arnel Pineda on vocals, and a DVD covering some live footage with the band.
There have been quite a few bands as of late trying to recapture the magic of their old sound. Some of them have done it well (Whitesnake) and some of them not so well (Dokken). I can honestly that with Revelation, Journey has finally put out a release that rivals those of their hit making years with Steve Perry.
By now, I am sure you know that Journey found Arnel Pineda via a You Tube video. They must have been impressed with what they saw and heard, and I have to second that opinion with his work on Revelation. Make no bones about it, Pineda doesn’t try to inject a new sound into Journey’s music. He is almost a dead ringer for Steve Perry vocally.
I don’t know if Pineda’s vocals have breathed new life into Journey, but the whole band seems re-energized. Neal Schon’s guitar work on this album is nothing short of superb. Cain, Vallory and Castronova also sound inspired.
With Arnel Pineda, Journey can forge ahead with the sound their fans love. While it may be true that Journey isn’t breaking any new ground here, I don’t think too many people will care. Revelation is going to please a hell of a lot of Journey fans, as well as the Steve Perry diehard fans out there.
Revelation is one of the highlights of 2008, and one of the best Melodic Rock discs so far this year. Highly recommended!

8 Journey, Cheap Trick and Heart Summer Tour!

Classic-rock fans have a triple-play to look forward to this summer when Journey, Cheap Trick and Heart join forces for a massive tour.
The 50-date run is scheduled to kick off July 9 in Denver and is booked primarily at amphitheaters throughout the US. The itinerary, included below, stretches into early October.
The outing will mark the debut of new Journey singer Arnel Pineda, whom the group crowned in December as the replacement for the band’s short-lived previous vocalist, Jeff Scott Soto, who split with the group last May after fronting the act for less than a year. Soto stepped into the role in 2006 when then-lead singer Steve Augieri was sidelined with vocal problems; Augieri had held the slot since the late ’90s after taking over for the group’s best-known singer, Steve Perry, with whom the band scored a flock of late-’70s and early ’80s hits including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Fathfully,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Any Way You Want It” and “Open Arms.”
The upcoming tour supports Journey’s forthcoming June 3 release, “Revelation,” a three-disc CD and DVD package that will be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in North America, according to a press release. Disc one comprises 11 re-recorded classics, disc two features 11 new songs, and disc three is a concert DVD.
Heart–sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson–released its most recent album, “Jupiter’s Darling,” in 2004. The set marked the pair’s first new studio collection in more than a decade.
Last September, Ann Wilson offered up her first solo album, “Hope & Glory.” She’s backing the set with a series of live shows that are scattered through mid-June; details are available at her MySpace page.
Cheap Trick dropped its latest album, “Rockford,” in 2006.

5 Journey Announces a New Singer!
The following announcement was posted on Journey’s website on 12/5/07:
JOURNEY – Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums) – is proud to introduce fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda (“pin-eh-da”). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons.
Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing Journey songs – in addition to original material – with his band, The Zoo, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland. Joining the legendary band is a dream come true for him.
“It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore Journey fans. I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like ‘the voice’ (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world.”
When it was time for Journey to look for a new lead singer, the internet came to their rescue. Guitarist Neal Schon wanted someone new to the music business, so he turned to YouTube. After finding Arnel singing ‘Faithfully‘, he knew he had found the perfect frontman.
“I was frustrated about not having a singer,” explains guitarist Neal Schon, “so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, ‘he can’t be that good.’ But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter.”
Arnel Pineda picks up the story: “My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, ‘what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime?’ So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history.”
“Arnel brings a soulful and passionate voice to Journey,” continues keyboardist Jonathan Cain. “His personality is very well-suited to our music. He’s a sincere, authentic person with a great smile and a big heart. I think fans are really going to love him. With Arnel’s soaring tenor, Journey returns to our heritage sound.”
Schon agrees, “We feel reborn. I think there’s a lot of chemistry between the five of us. At first we were going to go into the studio and just write 4 songs, but now it’s escalated to a lot of great new and diverse material. The stuff sounds tremendous. Everyone’s so stoked about it. We feel very fortunate to have found Arnel.”
Journey is currently working on a new album with legendary producer Kevin Shirley, which they hope to release by spring/summer 2008. Details will be announced early next year.
1 Sample new tunes by Seven Tears!
Born out of the ashes of the promising band ATLANTICA, SEVEN TEARS are a newcomer band from Sweden in a PROGRESSIVE / MELODIC METAL style with a lot of influences from the 80’s and with some Prog elements. Think of Evergrey, Last Tribe and Symphony X with hints to the sound of TNT, Journey and Pretty Maids.
Band members are Jonathan Carlemar (guitars), Fredrik Lager (bass), Kristofer von Wachenfeldt (keyboards, PLATITUDE) and Michael Sjöö (drums, SPEARFISH) and Zoran Djorem on vocals.
“Every Frozen Tears” is the band’s debut album and shows already an incredible songwriting maturity and instrumental abilities. Watch out for a great new sensation in Progressive Metal !
