0 M3 Rock Festival – Friday Review
Last Friday night, the M3 Rock Festival started its Friday night KIX off party in style, with not one, not two, but 5 great bands to kick off this awesome annual pilgrimage of classic hard rock. The weather was abysmal, but that did not stop the record crowd from pouring into the Merriweather Post Pavilion
Baltimore’s Bad Seed Rising started off the show, with a tight set of heavy tunes. These young rockers sound great and have a lot of potential. If you haven’t checked them out yet, visit their Facebook page here.
We missed the first few songs from Winger, as we were busy talking to KIX frontman Steve Whiteman (Interview coming to HRH soon). We missed hearing the new Winger tunes from their new album Better Days Comin’, but we did see the band perform most of their classic hits including: “Can’t Get Enough”, “Down Incognito”, “Madalaine” and “Seventeen”. Kip Winger and company sounded great.
Lita Ford was up next, and Lita’s set was not without some surprises of its own. Lita’s former Runaway band mate Cherie Currie joined her on stage for some Runaways classics including “Cherry Bomb”, “American Nights” and “Queens of Noise”. It was a great rock moment, and completely unexpected.
Nothing could have prepared me for what came next. Extreme took the stage at M3 for the first time since the very first M3 in 2009. From the very first note, Extreme was on fire! Gary Cherone was looking great, and sounding even better. Nuno Bettencourt was a lot of fun to watch, as he laid down his incredible guitar licks for those classic Extreme tunes. Extreme pulled off one of the best performances of the weekend, and easily the best of the Friday Night KIX Off party. I can only hope that Extreme will put out some new music, and tour, even if it is on a limited basis. This one off performance was not enough. Hopefully they will get an invite to M3 2015.
Speaking of new music, Hagerstown heros, KIX were the headliners once again at M3 and deservedly so. 2014 was the first time we have heard NEW KIX tunes at M3, and the new songs “Can’t Stop The Show” and “Love Me With The Top Down” were great. KIX has a new album coming out in July, and it can’t get here soon enough. Once again, KIX’s set was outstanding. Steve Whiteman’s vocals were perfect, and Brian Forsythe and Ronnie Younkins guitars were great as well. KIX is the one band that I always look forward to seeing at M3 every year, and they did not disappoint.
The M3 Rock Festival got off to a great start, and as great as Friday night was, Saturday was even better. More on that soon! Check out our photo gallery from the Friday Night, below!
2 The Sixth Annual M3 Rock Festival Begins Next Friday Night
The Sixth Annual M3 Rock Festival starts next Friday, and the 2014 lineup is stronger than ever. Each year, the fine folks at the Merriweather Post Pavillion bring in some of the finest classic rock acts in the U.S This year’s festival includes some first time acts at M3 including Autograph, Heaven’s Edge, Jake E. Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel, Femme Fatale, and John Corabi. (Corabi has been at M3 before with RATT, but never as a solo artist).
Friday Night’s headliner is Kix, and Saturday Night’s is Tesla. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Queensryche with Todd La Torre, or Jack Russell’s Great White, look no further. If you haven’t seen Extreme, Night Ranger or Stryper live, don’t miss this excellent opportunity to see them perform.
Overall, it is seventeen bands for a reasonable price, and tickets are STILL available. Don’t miss your chance to check out one of the coolest music festivals of the year.
You can buy tickets at this link!

1 Lita Ford – Living Like A Runaway (2012)
I am always overjoyed when metal bands from the 80s are still taking the time and effort to record new music. It’s nice to know that they are still dedicated to their craft and don’t want to just fall back on their old hit records, touring only behind those songs, or worse, re-record their old hits (something that I’ve never understood). So, when I learned that Lita Ford had a new record out (Living Like A Runaway), I was excited. I was looking forward to listening what Lita had been up to recently. Then I heard the record. My excitement dissipated like the morning fog.
It’s not that Like A Runaway is a terrible record, it’s just not a very exciting album. There are few songs to rally behind and give multiple listens. Most of the album is rather pedestrian and boring. Sometimes that’s worse than putting out a horrendous record. Ford’s vocals are subpar and lack energy, on the songs where she actually sings (as opposed to talking through the vocals).
Lead track, “Branded,” and the follow up song “Hate,” are very weak introductions to the record and it isn’t until the title track (fourth on the album) that things pick up. Again, these songs aren’t terrible, but none of the first three tracks do anything to excite me. None of them make me want to sing along, or get stuck in my head. They all hang in the air and then quickly fade into the oblivion of forgotten.
“Love 2 Hate U” was a song that showed potential early on, but suffered from clichés and weak vocals by both Lita Ford and duet partner Gary Hoey. Add into the mix some lame lyrics (I gave you lovin/your first real lovin/in the backseat/on the night I bought your first real car). Ugh. There is almost no thought in those lyrics. And while the music is somewhat catchy and the guitar riffs rock hard, the terrible vocals and lyrics can’t be overcome.
There are some high points on Living Like A Runaway. A lot of the guitar work is above average, and some of the solos really rock hard. The title track of the album, “Like A Runaway” is a great, nostalgic song that harkens back to Ford’s earliest days as a rock musician in her former band The Runaways. The song has a nice arrangement and overall is quite enjoyable. Ford has a tendency to speak through rather than sing out on the song, which is a recurring problem on most of the album, but otherwise “Like A Runaway” is a solid tune. I expect that it will sell well as a single.
Recent news is that Lita has been getting together with old Runaways band mates, discussing the possibility of a reunion. And maybe there is a reason for that. If she continues to put out lackluster albums like Living Like A Runaway, there won’t be much of a solo career for Lita Ford to fall back on.

1 LITA FORD PREMIERS NEW SONG
Living Like A Runaway Out June 19th on SPV/Steamhammer

Unlike many albums today, Living Like a Runaway is an album that truly must be heard in its entirety from start to finish. “Listeners shouldn’t pick out individual tracks but listen to the full album,” says FORD. “It’s a fascinating musical journey, inspired by Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I had seen a documentary about Dark Side of the Moon and it really motivated me to focus on Living Like a Runaway as a whole journey rather just an individual song.

LITA FORD has teamed up with producer Gary Hoey and lyricist Michael Dan Ehmig to work on Living Like a Runaway. Together the team invested a lot of time and effort into this kick ass project: “We worked on the lyrics intensively to really give the songs a lot of meaning and that special emotional depth. I think that these are some of the best lyrics ever, period. FORD is referring to numbers such as ‘Devil In My Head,’ ‘Hate,’ and ‘The Asylum’ which see her bare her soul in a way which she has never done before.
Unlike many albums today, Living Like a Runawayis an album that truly must be heard in its entirety from start to finish. “Listeners shouldn’t pick out individual tracks but listen to the full album,” says FORD. “It’s a fascinating musical journey, inspired by Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I had seen a documentary about Dark Side of the Moon and it really motivated me to focus on Living Like a Runawayas a whole journey rather just an individual song.
Coinciding with the album’s release, LITA is hitting the road this summer with Def Leppard and Poison on the “Rock of Ages Tour”. The dates for the first leg of the tour have been announced and are listed below. More dates are expected to be announced soon.
Following the demise of the Runaways, LITA FORD concentrated on her own career and now looks back on many memorable hits including: the chart topping duet with Ozzy Osbourne “Close Your Eyes Forever” “What Do You Know About Love”, “Shot Of Poison”, “Larger Than Life” and “Kiss Me Deadly”. With the release of Living Like A Runaway, expect many more songs to be added to the list of hits.

1 LITA FORD SIGNS TO SPV/STEAMHAMMER; NEW ALBUM TITLE REVEALED
Legendary female metal icon LITA FORD has signed a worldwide deal with SPV/Steamhammer. Her new album entitled “Living Like A Runaway” is tentatively set for a May 2012 release. Best known for her work with The Runaways and her solo career, featuring hit singles “Kiss Me Deadly” and the Billboard charting duet “Close My Eyes Forever” with Ozzy Osbourne, LITA is ready to make a return to the throne as the queen of metal:
“SPV gets who I am, my work, and what it takes to bring this project to life. I’m very excited to have them on my team,” says LITA.
LITA spoke about her work with Gary Hoey on the album and the meaning of the album’s title:
“Gary Hoey and I wanted to approach this record by getting back to basics. We want to strip away all the electronics and plug-ins and keep it to vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. Going back to basics is going back to what punk, metal and The Runways was for me.
“Living Like A Runaway” means freedom and empowerment. To do what I want and to pursue my dreams while answering to no one.”
SPV A&R Representative/Product Manager Olly Hahn commented on the signing of LITA FORD:
“When I bought “Dancin`On The Edge” back in 1984 I never thought that I would ever sign Lita Ford to a label. But a dream of mine came true and it`s a huge honor for us at SPV/Steamhammer to have one of the leading women in Rock n`Roll on our label.”

6 Lita Ford – Wicked Wonderland (2009)
It has been fourteen years since Lita Ford’s last album, Black. In her long absence away from the metal scene Lita has been lost in the Caribbean with her husband Jim Gillette (Nitro), and has been focused on her family, not music. Unfortunately, Wicked Wonderland shows just that. On this new album, Lita Ford has reinvented her sound, and I am not sure which set of music fans she is trying to appeal to. Her old fans will be left scratching their head, and I am not sure how many new fans this music will appeal to.
I have no problem with an artist updating their sound, or trying to stay current. Even though hair metal had made a minor comeback over the last few years, I didn’t expect Lita to put out a disc that sound like her 80’s material. If you go back and listen to her album Black from 1995, you will see a change in her sound. That disc showed a somewhat different direction from Lita’s roots, but it still worked. After a few spins of Wicked Wonderland, I wish she had gone back to the sound that helped make her famous. Some of the songs on Wicked Wonderland work well enough, but most of them are a maybe a little too grungy for their own good. Lita Ford’s husband, Jim Gillette, who was once known for his glass breaking screams in the band Nitro, shares the vocal duties on this CD. The odd thing is, he sings in a gruff, sometimes menacing voice that is completely unlike anything Nitro fans have heard either. Overall, it makes for a strange combination. It almost sounds as if Lita listened to a heavy dose of Rob Zombie in her hiatus.
The opening cut “Crave” is kind of cool. I will admit that this song has grown on me somewhat, even through it has an almost industrial like feel.
“Piece” on the other hand makes me shudder. It oozes sex, but not in a good way. This song has a grungy rap like feel, and for my ears, it just doesn’t work.
“Patriotic SOB” starts off with Lita’s sons pledging the allegiance to the flag. It then blasts off into a grunge filled rocker. This song isn’t great, but isn’t terrible either. It does have some catchy moments.
On the song “Inside” Lita shares the vocals with her husband Jim. This song has a sexual yet eerie vibe. I could actually see this song getting used in a Vampire flick of some sort.
I could almost hear the title track Wicked Wonderland getting some play in the dance/strip clubs. It has a pretty cool groove that is undeniably catchy.
The production on Wicked Wonderland is top notch, but the production can not help the weak songs, and there are far too many of them. I kept trying to find another song or two that might change my mind about this disc, but I could not find one. Overall, I found Wicked Wonderland to be a major disappointment. I still love Lita Ford, and I will definitely catch her on her tour with Queensryche. I just hope she plays more of her classic material.

3 Hard Rock Hideout’s Wicked Interview With Lita Ford
Its not every day when you get the chance to talk to the former Metal Queen Lita Ford, but we were happy to have the opportunity at HardRockHideout.com. After a long absence from the music scene, Lita Ford is coming back strong in 2009 with a new CD, Wicked Wonderland on October 6th, a new comic, and a role in an up and coming major video game release, and of course, a tour with Queensryche.
HRH: Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do an interview with us today. It has been fourteen long years since your last album Black, and we are damn glad you are back.
Lita Ford: Thank you very much!
HRH: What have you been up to in your long break in between Black and Wicked Wonderland?
Lita Ford: Been living on an island with my husband and 2 boys. I focused on my family. Had tons of crazy wild sex with Jim – not much else to do on our island at night!
HRH: Your return to the music scene seemed to start with your duet with Dee Snider on Twisted Sister’s Twisted Christmas CD. Did this give you the itch to start playing live again?
Lita Ford: I’ve always had the itch! I was just waiting for our kids to grow up. I wasn’t going to drag them all over the world as babies! Now they’re a little older and they LOVE it as much as I do! We’re having a blast out there!
HRH: The songs on Wicked Wonderland are a bit of a departure from your sound in the late eighties and early nineties. “Crave” is a pretty cool rocker, and “Wicked Wonderland” almost has a club like vibe to it. That has to be one of the coolest Lita Ford songs in years.
Lita Ford: Thanks very much. I wanted to come back heavier than ever and I did! I wasn’t going to come back with sandals and hairy armpit music – I wanna ROCK!
HRH: How have the fans reacted to your new songs so far?
Lita Ford: It’s been incredible! Crave debuted at #2 in the USA at metal radio! All the emails, posts, etc have been overwhelming – I’ve been blown away by the support of my fans.
HRH: What was the song writing process like for the new album?
Lita Ford: Me, Jim, and Greg Hampton wrote all the songs. When it came time to write lyrics, Jim and I would crack open a bottle of champagne and let it go.We unintentionally ended up writing pretty much the entire album about our crazy sex life! Hahaha?
HRH: What is the inspiration behind the new songs?
Lita Ford: My marriage with Jim – after 15 years we’re more in love, more in lust, and have an incredible love life. Jim’s the only man that’s ever sexually satisfied me. We’re soul mates that just happen to have a taste for kink! Sex Sex and Rock n Roll!
HRH: Back in ’95, you and Jim were working on a new project called Rumble Tribe. Did any of these songs from that project turn up on Wicked Wonderland?
Lita Ford: No that was a different animal. Great stuff back then – maybe we’ll release some of it one of these days. Wicked Wonderland is all brand new. We wrote all of it within the last year.
HRH: The artwork inside your booklet for Wicked Wonderland is pretty incredible. What can can you tell me about that?
Lita Ford: Piggy D and his girlfriend Carin did an AWESOME job for us! We absolutely LOVE the artwork! We wanted to go old school and make the artwork an important part of the package. We gave Piggy the lyrics and told him to go for it.
HRH: Bumblefoot from Guns N’ Roses, and PJ Farley from Trixter and Ra played in your band at Rocklahoma earlier this year. Who will be going on the road with you when you tour with Queensryche on the American Soldier Tour?
Lita Ford: Queensryche is my backing band!!!!How awesome is that?!?!?
Lita Ford: We’ll I’m playing a few songs in the middle of their set. Geoff is going to sing Close My Eyes with me and then I’ll do a few new songs. I can’t wait to get out there!
HRH: You are playing a bunch of cities that haven’t seen you in years. Are you excited about hitting the road?
HRH: You have always been knows to play BC Rich guitars in your career. Have you added any new guitars to your arsenal?
Lita Ford: Oh yeah! Bernie Rico Jr. is making me some incredible new guitars. Bernie’s father started BC Rich! He passed away and Bernie is keeping the family craft alive! Can’t wait for you to see some of the new guitars.
HRH: We are big fans of the Playstation 3 at HRH, and are pretty excited about the up and coming game Brutal Legend that you are featured in. What can you tell us about the game?
Lita Ford: Well Jack Black is the male lead and I’m the Queen!
Ozzy’s in it along with Lemmy, Rob Halford…It’s good to be the Queen!
HRH: You also have a new comic coming out called “The Gillettes”: Family Business. What can you tell us about that?
Lita Ford: Very excited about that too! We get to kick a lot of zombie ass!
HRH: What are some of your fondest memories of your music career so far?
Lita Ford: Being nominated for a Grammy was pretty cool – BOTH times!
Having a platinum record….Those were pretty high on the list!
HRH: In closing, is there anything you would like to tell your fans?
Lita Ford: Thank you so much! You’ve been with me a LONG time and I hope you guys will be as blessed as you’ve made me! You’ve always been so good to me and now to my family!
It means so much to me.
KEEP ROCKIN’!
Lita

0 Lita Ford To Appear in a Comic Book
LITA & FAMILY STAR IN THE GILLETTES: FAMILY BUSINESS COMIC BOOK 14-Year-Old Comic Writer Jake Tinsley Pens the Book Lita has taken her family into the recording studio, on the road around the globe, and now will capture her clan manga-style on the pages of their first comic book, The Gillettes: Family Business, due this November. “We always wanted to do a comic book,” says the Queen of Heavy Metal. “And, this was a great family project. We include the kids in everything we do. They sing the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ on my new album, Wicked Wonderland, and we bring them on the road, where they often jump onstage and throw metal horns or squirt water guns at the crowd. To include them in a project like this was exciting for the whole family.” The comic book will tell the tale of Lita, husband Jim Gillette, and their two sons, Rocco, 8, and James, 12, trying to make it to their Halloween rock concert, but they encounter trouble along the way in the form of ravenous zombies and an ancient Chinese curse. The book’s writer, 14-year-old Jake Tinsley, attracted fans worldwide through his critically-acclaimed Night Owl comic book series and his socially-conscious Amber Hagerman Deserves Justice: A Night Owl Story, which was dedicated to helping to find the person who adducted and killed the nine-year-old Arlington, Texas girl in 1996 for which the AMBER Alert child abduction system is named after. “After working on something as serious as the Amber comic,” explains Jake, “my dad and I wanted a project that was fun. What’s more fun than zombies and rock and roll?” Jake once again teamed with veteran manga artist Jason Dube on this comic to render the drawings. “Jason is the best artist there is for drawing beautiful women manga style,” adds Jake. “He really does Lita justice.” Manga is the Japanese style known for its bright colors and wide-eyed characters who are exaggerated versions of the human form. Jake, who is a third generation writer, said he wanted to meet Lita and Jim’s kids, Rocco and James because they are second generation rock and rollers. “It’s like they’re real life superheroes already. Who better to fight zombies than a couple of kids so well-trained to fight in real life?” adds Jake. Rocco and James are indeed well-trained at fighting as both kids are into boxing and jujutsu. In fact, the two are assistant jujutsu teachers. “Our kids kicked the hell out it. They are pretty beastly anyway,” adds Lita. “Our kids are extreme and Jake is extreme as a writer. They’re all mighty kids and it was fun to get them together.” The 24-page, full-color comic book, The Gillettes: Family Business, will be available wherever comic books are sold in November via the family’s JLRG Entertainment and Tinsley’s Wham Bang Comics, which he co-founded with his father Ben Tinsley. For more information, go to litaxx.tv or whambangcomics.com.
0 Lita Ford Gets Naughty
LITA FORD GETS NAUGHTY ON WICKED WONDERLAND, TITILLATING ALBUM ART REFLECTED ON MYSPACE PAGE AND VINYL/PICTURE DISC VERSIONS
Remember the good old days, when you’d rush home from buying vinyl at your nearest record shop, put the platter on your turntable, and study the album cover and its contents as you listened? With those days seemingly gone with the “download revolution” in full swing, Lita is willing to offer fans a good sense of deja vu with her upcoming release on October 6th, Wicked Wonderland. In addition to being released as a CD and a download, it will also be issued as a vinyl record and an eye-popping picture disc. Pre-orders for both the CD and the vinyl version are available via Lita’s official site [www.litaxx.tv] and Myspace page [www.myspace.com/litaford]. “We told [album designers] Piggy D and Carin the lyrics to the songs – they’re very sexual,” says Lita. “We told them we didn’t want it to be our idea of a Wicked Wonderland. We wanted people to be able to hear the music, look at the art, and come up with their own Wicked Wonderland. Because my idea is probably a lot different than yours, which is probably a lot different than the neighbors! We all have different fantasies. What we love to do isn’t going to be for everybody, so we wanted the art to be very sexual yet vague enough to let you come up with your own thing – to help spur you into your own Wicked Wonderland.” Lita’s husband, Jim Gillette – who also co-produced Wicked Wonderland with Lita and Greg Hampton – agrees. “There’s a piece of art for every song. I haven’t seen any packaging like this in 20 years. Everybody’s doing the download thing – it’s like, go ahead, but you’re going to miss out on a huge part of the experience.
One night, we had a bottle of champagne and we sat there for three hours – we have a huge Apple screen in our studio, and we blew the picture up and started finding all this crazy stuff. Piggy said there are two cockroaches on the album cover…we only found one – we did find the other! There’s stuff all over. Lita says it’s almost like an ‘I Spy’ thing – the more you look, the more you see.” The vinyl version of Wicked Wonderland will be issued as a limited run, and the picture disc will be even a smaller limited run, so act fast. And tying in with the album cover design is a new design for Lita’s Myspace page. “Piggy D and Carin Cronacher put it together using the same artwork that they created for the album,” explains Lita. “Our myspace page is different from other bands, because we have pictures of the whole family. There’s a video of our kid boxing, there’s family photos – photos from the house, everyday life, vacations. It’s cool – we’ve gotten a lot of comments on that and a lot of emails through Myspace from people thanking us for being so open with our family life, and sharing more private stuff – rather than only studio-type shots.” And lastly, Jim encourages fans to get in touch with Lita through her myspace page, and either Lita or Jim will try and respond.
0 LITA FORD HITS THE TOUR TRAIL WITH SUPPORT FROM HER FAMILY
Kick Ass Comeback Album, Wicked Wonderland, Soon to Follow With Lita’s highly anticipated first album in nearly fourteen years set to be unleashed on October 6th, Wicked Wonderland, the queen of metal has been wowing audiences all summer long with live dates – primarily in Europe. But come the fall, the U.S. will receive its first full-on set of live Lita dates. “They’ve been incredible!,” says Lita about the performances thus far. “Everyone has treated us so good. The energy is intense – the audience is a very important part of the show.” While some rockers are surrounded by assistants and hangers-on to take care of their daily duties, Lita has opted to take her home life on the road, where she is joined by her husband, former Nitro singer Jim Gillette, and their two sons, James and Rocco (age twelve and eight, respectively). Just what is at typical day for Lita, Jim, and the kids? “Bad food – it isn’t mom’s – plane rides, airport fun…isn’t security a blast now? Then there was the bomb threats in Sweden, but hey, the bomb sniffing dogs were cute!” Despite the audiences’ unfamiliarity with the Wicked Wonderland material beforehand, it’s been fitting in perfectly amongst all the classics. “There are a few songs that have to be played live, like ‘Close My Eyes,’ ‘Kiss Me Deadly,’ ‘Hungry,’ and ‘Back to the Cave.’ But the new stuff is so much fun to play – it’s so freakin’ heavy! We’re very excited for everyone to hear the new stuff. It rocks hard. We’ve been playing ‘Crave’ and ‘Betrayal’ [off of Wicked Wonderland]. The reaction has been overwhelming. By the second or third chorus, everyone’s singing along.”
And how does it feel for Lita to finally be hitting the concert trail once more? “It’s wonderful. I’ve been blessed in so many ways, and one of them is my fans. They’re so good to me. Some bands have what I call ‘fair weather fans’ – they’re there when there’s a hit, and gone when there isn’t. That’s never been the case for me. My fans have been there through all the good, the bad, and the ugly, and that’s what makes them so great. When we play ‘Close My Eyes’ it’s amazing – the crowd sings so loud I can’t hear them over my guitar! The energy I get from them is incredible. Recording is fun but playing live is the best. It’s always been my favorite part of all this. I’ve been on stage since I was 16 years old – it’s a big part of who I am. It feels like home to me.” Soon, Lita’s rabid stateside fans will get the chance to experience her royal metallic majesty on a concert stage nearby. “Our show is all about forgetting everything and just having fun. There’s enough bad news on TV. If you want to just let it all hang out and rock like there’s no tomorrow – come out to a show.”

0 LITA FORD HITS THE ROAD AGAIN AS A FAMILY AFFAIR
Groundbreaker Female Rocker Releases First Album in 18 Years, Wicked Wonderland, This Fall
Can a beautiful woman whose family comes first be a hard rock icon and guitar star as well as a wife and mother of two boys? Sure, if she’s Lita Ford. After a 15-year hiatus from the rock’n’roll scene during which she married, moved to a remote Caribbean island, and started a family, the guitarist, singer and songwriter returns to the stage this summer to give her many fans a taste of her new album to be released this fall, Wicked Wonderland, and bring back to them the music that made her the Queen of Heavy Metal.
The album sizzles with the adult libidinal passion that Lita has found in her marriage to Jim Gillette, former lead singer of the band Nitro. Lita’s maturity and family life has anything but dampened her rock’n’roll fire, and in fact ignited her most fiery set of songs and brought even further force and finesse to her guitar playing.
As she has from the start of her career with The Runaways through her many accomplishments as a solo artist, Lita continues to blaze trails for women in rock’n’roll. Now it’s as “a great wife and a pretty cool mom that just happens to be a rock star,” as she describes herself today.
Over some three decades of rocking as hard as any man, Lita forged a legacy of hit songs, best-selling albums and sizzling live performances. But after marrying fellow rocker Gillette, she set stardom aside to excel in another endeavor. “I needed to raise my sons and I needed to get them to the point where it was okay for me to travel,” she explains as she now hits the road again. “I didn’t want to travel with two little infants.”
Instead, Lita and Gillette made their home on a small tropical island where she focused on rearing and home schooling the couple’s sons, James (now 12 years old) and Rocco (age seven). She devoted herself to family with the same focus and drive that made her a musical legend. “When you have a husband and two boys to take care of, you never have any spare time,” Lita explains. “I know there are a lot of other moms out there that know exactly what I am talking about.”
Just as Lita pioneered new modes for women in rock music, her unique family life demonstrates how high love and devotion to a husband and children can be as dynamic and cutting edge as her musical endeavors. She resumed her musical career after the decision was put to a family vote, with both of her kids in favor of her rocking again. As they said to her, “Mom — you’re Lita!”
“This album is what got me to leave the island life behind,” she explains. “It gave me an excuse to take my family all over the world. They love it and are very supportive and behind me every step of the way.” Plus their travel together offers an extension of the boys’ home schooling as she plays festivals and other select dates in America and Europe this summer. “Now it’s educational to take them out and show them places like Sweden and Italy and tour all through the United States.”
And even her stage shows are a family affair. Gillette serves as road manager and joins his wife on some songs to sing backup vocals and a few duets. James — a budding guitarist and singer — and Rocco also join in on the fun during her sets. “They throw balloons into the audience and get the audience to sing along. ‘I can’t hear you!’ Stuff like that,” Lita reports.
With Gillette and the boys all sporting Mohawk haircuts and Mom rocking out in leather outfits and stiletto heel boots, the foursome hardly appear to be the average parents and kids on their summer travels. But as Gillette notes, “even though we look like ‘The Addams Family,’ we operate more like ‘Leave It To Beaver.’”
“When we meet somebody, they’re not sure what to make of us,” Lita observes. “We’re an abnormal family, but we’re very tight.” Now that she is back in musical action, Lita would like to continue being an inspiration and role model for other women who rock. “I hope to set the path for even more female guitarists,” she says. “Bet we’ll be seeing a lot in the future.”
