0 Lynch Mob – REvolution (Release Year – 2003)
One of my nicer used disc finds over the last couple of weeks is Lynch Mob’s REvolution. My used copy came with a nice slip cover case, complete with a postcard and poster of the band. REvolution marks the return of Robert Mason on lead vocals after more than a decade of absence.
Essentially, what you get on REvolution are some reworked Dokken and Lynch Mob songs. The versions here are far heavier than the originals by either band. Either George Lynch has his guitar tuned down, in a key that I am not use to hearing him play in, or the bass is way heavier in these tracks. I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but the end result are some of the heaviest sounding tracks that I have ever heard George Lynch play on.
Robert Mason puts a different twist on the Dokken vocals. He does not sing the songs
exactly like Don Dokken, so it gives each song a new feel.
Some fans are going to love this, and some are going to hate the reworked Dokken songs. I enjoy the new twist and the more heavy metal approach to the songs.
There are a couple of problems which I should point out quickly. There is no new material on REvolution. Nada, Zilch, Zip! A couple of new songs could have helped out this collection greatly, but I think that was outside the scope of George’s vision for this disc.
Problem # 2, I have listened to these songs a few times now, and quite frankly, I do not find any of these versions superior to the originals.
With that being said, if this was the first time I had ever heard any of these songs, I would probably be pretty excited about this disc. All of the songs are still quite good, and still very enjoyable. Robert Mason does a great job putting his own spin on these songs, and George Lynch’s playing is superb as always.
Even though I enjoyed REvolution somewhat, I believe that this disc is probably for the Lynch Mob and George Lynch die hard fans only.
