TO DEBUT MAY 2013
AT MKUHARI MESSE
PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN SHARON OSBOURNE
AND JAPANESE PROMOTER
HAYASHI INTERNATIONAL PROMOTION (H.I.P.)
Sharon Osbourne, in partnership with Japanese promoter Hayashi International Promotion (H.I.P.), has confirmed the first-ever OZZFEST JAPAN. The two-day festival will debut Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe arena just outside of Tokyo and will feature headlining performances from Black Sabbath–featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi–and Slipknot.
“We are excited for the opportunity to bring OZZFEST to Japan for the first time ever,” says Sharon Osbourne. “We’ve got the perfect combination of Western and Japanese bands. OZZFEST is also thrilled to be presenting Black Sabbath’s first-ever performance in Japan.”
The inaugural OZZFEST JAPAN line-up will be co-headlined by Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum rockers SLIPKNOT, who last performed in Japan in 2008. The remaining acts on the festival’s lineup will be revealed later this year, and according to organizers it will feature performances from a dynamic mix of international and domestic bands with the goal of establishing OZZFEST JAPAN as the leader in the Japanese rock festival market.
Hailing from Birmingham, England, Black Sabbath released their self-titled debut album on February 13, 1970. Their follow up album, the seminal masterpiece, UK #1 album Paranoidfeatured rock anthems “War Pigs” and “Iron Man,” as well as the title track, “Paranoid.” Black Sabbath has sold in excess of 70 million records worldwide and has been proclaimed by MTV as the “Greatest Metal Band of All Time.” In late 2011, the band announced their much-anticipated reunion and the band is currently recording their first new studio album in 33 years with producer Rick Rubin (it will be released in Spring 2013). The band went on to perform highly acclaimed headlining shows this past summer at the Download Festival in the U.K.and Lollapalooza in the United States.
In the more than 35-year history in Japan, promoter H.I.P. has worked with international superstars including AC/DC, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Guns N’ Roses, as well as Japanese powerhouse newcomers Momoiro Clover and internationally acclaimed band Dir en grey.
Despite Japan reigning as the second largest music market in the world, OZZFEST JAPAN 2013 will represent the first major international music festival to ever travel to the country.
“We are thrilled to open a new chapter for this legendary festival in Japan,” H.I.P. President Massy Hayashi says of the significance of bringing OZZFEST to Japan. “I think it will be the perfect chance to bring together the very best international rock music and also give us a chance to show how far Japanese rock has come in recent years.”
As of November 1, ticket prices are as follows: single-day tickets are JPY 14,000, weekend passes are JPY 27,000, weekend passes including an official festival t-shirt are JPY 30,000. All prices include consumption tax, box office commission and ticket printing fees.

Beginning in 1996, OZZFEST established itself as a virtual breeding ground for rising bands. The festival has been instrumental in igniting the careers of platinum-selling artists like System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Incubus, Slipknot, Queens of the Stone Age, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold, Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Lacuna Coil, among others. It was cited as “one of rock’s biggest juggernauts” in the cover feature of Sunday’s New York Times’ “Arts & Leisure” section (6/25/06). In 2008, the festival changed to aone-day stadium spectacular in Texas that teamed OZZFEST founder and namesake Ozzy Osbourne (in his only U.S. concert appearance that summer) with Metallica (marking their OZZFEST debut).
More than 15 years after Ozzy Osbourne debuted OZZFest, the defining blueprint for hard rock tours and festivals returns this August in five American cities with an explosive bill co-headlines by OZZY and, in their first-ever OZZFest appearance, Motley Cure–touring together for the first time with OZZY since he invited the group on their now legendary 1984 arena tour. Expect the energy to go way off the carts at the all-day extravaganza of music and deranged merriment.
The main stage will feature full sets from Ozzy, Motley Crue and Rob Halford (who last appeared on OZZfest in 2004 with Judas Priest and Fight. DevilDriver and Nonpoint will round out the main stage line=up. Second stage headliners and six-time OZZFest veterans Black Label Society will be Joines by Drowning Pool, Kingdom of Sorrow, Goatwhore, Skeletonwitch, Saviours and Kataklysm.
According to Billboard.com Ozzfest 2008, with Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne as headliners, grossed nearly $3.5 million and drew close to 30,000 people to Dallas’ Pizza Hut Park, according to producers Sharon Osbourne and AEG Live.
Sponsored by Affliction Clothing, this year’s Ozzfest marked the return of the 13-year-old hard music brand after a free run at amphitheaters last year.
This year’s one-off event did “fantastically well,” Sharon Osbourne tells Billboard.com. “The one thing is you want for the kids to go away and keep talking about what a great show it was, and that’s what they’re doing.”
In addition to Metallica and Osbourne, mainstage acts were Serj Tankian, Hellyeah, Johnathan Davis, Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica, and In This Moment. The second stage featured Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goathore. On the third stage were the Sword, Drowning Pool, Rigor Mortis, Within Chaos, Destro and “battle of the bands” winners Debris and Black Tooth.
Going out as a free event in 2007 was “a great learning experience,” Osbourne says. “Everything you do should be a learning experience, unless you’re such an egomaniac you think everything you do is right, and we’re not. I’m glad that we did it. Te fans went away happy, but my God, it was probably one of the toughest things we’ve ever done. Who would think it was so tough to give something away free?”
Osbourne says plans are for Ozzfest to return to Dallas again next summer, likely as a two-day festival, and other cities are also being considered. “Ozzfest ain’t going anywhere,” she says. “We do try and shake things up and experiment. We’re not the old donkey that plods on doing the same sh*t.”
Meanwhile, 2008 has been a great year for Ozzy, Osbourne adds. “Ozzy had an unbelievable last record (‘Black Rain’), an unbelievable year touring and he’s in the studio right now recording,” she says. “We just signed a new deal with Sony for three more albums and we ain’t going nowhere.”
In addition to Affliction, this year’s Ozzfest sponsors included Jägermeister, Monster Energy Drink and ESP Guitars.

Second stage acts are Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. The Sword, Drowning Pool and Rigor Mortis will handle duties on the third stage.
“We’re going to be a stadium destination festival for now — we have gone past doing the sheds every summer,” says Ozzy’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, who is producing Ozzfest with AEG Live. “We’ve given everyone else the blueprint and we have to keep evolving Ozzfest. This is just the beginning; AEG Live and I have a lot of new ideas for Ozzfest.”
Ozzfest will be Osbourne’s only concert performance this summer. Tickets for the one-day festival will go on sale May 31 via Ozzfest.com; prices have not yet been announced.
Last year, the Osbournes created a stir when they revealed the Live Nation-produced Ozzfest would be a sponsor-driven, free event, and acts would be asked to play without being paid. The 25-date amphitheater tour featured such artists as Lamb Of God, Hatebreed and Lordi, among others
