You probably remember hearing “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats or “Focus” by Hocus Pocus at some point in your life. Most likely you heard these songs and thought they were freaking amazing, even though they may have been about the oddest songs you’ve ever heard.”It’s safe to dance?” Really? I still remember the first time I heard “Focus.” The song was so odd, yet I could not bring myself to turn it off.
And then after it was finished, I immediately wanted to listen to it again. As weird as it was, the song was still magnificent in its own right. Rock and roll has a lot of songs like that. They are the strangest things we’ve ever listened to, yet they are so enjoyable that we want to hear them over and over again. I’ve decided to reminisce for this edition of Vie’s Verses. Take a stroll down memory lane with me as I try to recall the oddest hard rock songs that still rocked like no other.
David Lee Roth – Hot Dog And A Shake
After parting ways with Van Halen, Diamond Dave went out on his own and released a fantastic album in Eat ‘Em And Smile. He then followed that up with the brilliant Skyscraper. The addition of Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai as band members only added to the greatness of each of these records. And while not every song was a huge hit or an unforgettable anthem, there was always one song that stood out to me as a great tune that I never understood lyrically—“Hot Dog And A Shake.” According to Dave, that’s what you’re hungry for. And while the lyrics may be ultra-corny, the music was so fabulous, that I found myself singing along after just a few listens. Steve Vai’s solo is one of the greatest on the entire album and the riff just made this song so addicting. And yet, it’s about hot dogs and shakes. To this day, I still move my feet and sing along whenever I hear this tune. And yes, I know there are plenty of innuendos in this song. 13 year old me, did not, Okay?
Queen – Bicycle Race
When it comes to Queen, there are several songs that could be chosen as odd and yet still addicting. “Fat Bottomed Girls” came to mind immediately, and while that is a weird song, there are plenty of men with a fetish for big bottomed women. To me, “Bicycle Race” was always the strangest Queen song I had ever heard. And yet, I loved it as much as I loved “Another One Bites The Dust,” and “We Will Rock You.” All Freddie Mercury wants to do is ride his bicycle—yes he wants to ride his bike. “Bicycle Race” could lyrically be one of the dumbest songs in existence, and yet Queen made it a memorable hit that I still enjoy.
White Zombie – Thunder Kiss ’65
I think the biggest part of what makes this song so odd is the fact that without looking up the lyrics, I have no idea what Rob Zombie is singing. Whenever I hear the song I sing along as such: “Blah, blah, meh, meh… NINETEEN SIXTY FIVE…YEAH!!!” Looking at the lyrics to the song just makes me more confused. Pig sweat a million miles? I’ve got a heart atomic style? What the hell does all of that mean? Truthfully, it doesn’t really matter, because “Thunder Kiss ‘65” is one of the hardest rocking songs I’ve ever heard and I will always scream “NINETEEN SIXTY…FIVE…YEAH!” at the top of my lungs any time this song is played within my general vicinity. Zombie may be strange, but he’s a master when it comes to music (and horror movies).
I’m The Man – Anthrax
At the end of the 80s, rap and metal came together and in a creative outburst, “I’m The Man” was born. As a pre-teen, this was one of the coolest songs I had ever heard and it made me fall in love with Anthrax. As a well-seasoned hard rock loving adult, I think the song is just plain silly. And yet, secretly, I still listen to it every now and again to make sure that I remember the lyrics—don’t worry, I do. The song was meant to be campy and comical, and it certainly succeeded in that regard, but the song was also a great rocking tune. Everyone wanted to sing along when this song came on. Everyone. So we learned the lyrics and did our part. To this day I still know the sexual organ located in the lower abdominal area…..! No man, it’s, dick! Not! Not!
Baby Snakes – Hurricane
This is a song about a high school guy that fails miserably in trying to attract a girl he is lusting after, as told through telephone conversations and jaw dropping guitar solos. This song basically summed up my freshman year of high school, so naturally the first time I heard it I was in tears from laughing so hard. Jenny is the subject of the narrator’s lust interest, and as the song opens he is psyching himself up that today is his lucky day, he’s going to ask her to go out and she’s going to say yes. And in his nervous confused state, he dials the wrong number. Enter hard hitting drums by Jay Schellen and some amazing guitar riffs from Robert Sarzo. “Baby Snakes” takes off from there, documenting the failed attempts of the narrator continuing to call Jenny and annoy her to no end. Cleverly put together, “Baby Snakes” remains one of the oddest, yet coolest, rock songs that I have ever heard. If you’ve never heard the song, you need to seek it out. It’s worth the effort.

Screenvision, in an alliance with More2Screen and Eagle Rock, brings Queen, one of the world’s most iconic British rock bands, to the big screen with the feature presentation of “Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest ’86.” Originally filmed on July 27, 1986, this Queen concert film has been re-mastered for digital cinema in high definition with 5.1 surround sound and features many of the band’s most popular tracks, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “I Want to Break Free” and “We Are the Champions.”
Part of the hugely successful Magic Tour, this concert is significant because it was the last time Queen toured with their late lead singer Freddie Mercury. It was also the largest stadium concert ever staged at the Népstadion in Budapest, in front of 80,000 ecstatic fans – three years before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
This special performance is introduced with a 25-minute documentary feature including rare footage – some of which has never been seen before – that gives the inside track on events, following the band from just after their historic performance at Live Aid in 1985 through the year leading up to the concert in Budapest. Using archive footage from rehearsals, interviews with the band in studio and on the road during the Magic Tour, this fascinating feature has been specially created for this new cinema release. Fans worldwide can be part of this celebration of Queen’s global appeal as this event is shown in movie theaters across the U.S. in a limited engagement on September 20, 23 and 27, 2012. For information and tickets go to www.QueenOnScreen.com.
“We’re delighted that Queen fans across the world will finally have the chance to relive this amazing moment for the band. We knew a stadium concert in Budapest was ground-breaking, but hadn’t quite anticipated what a historic night it would turn out to be. The concert looks fantastic on the cinema screen in all its digitally re-mastered glory and the documentary does a great job of setting the scene – it really was an extraordinary time in the band’s history.” – Brian May and Roger Taylor
Darryl Schaffer, EVP of Exhibitor Relations, Screenvision said: “We’re thrilled to bring Queen’s amazing stage performance to the big screen for the first time here in the U.S. With their unique cross-generational appeal, we are certain this will be a must-see event for music lovers and moviegoers of all ages, both their original fans and the younger ones who continue to discover the majesty of their music each passing year.”
Throughout the band’s 40 year career Queen set precedents within rock music that will never be equalled. With over 170 million global album sales, 18 Number One Albums, 10 Number One DVD’s, 700 concerts performed in every corner of the world including their historic appearance at Live Aid, the Queen story is one of the most remarkable in pop history. The band continues to hold the record for having the UK’s biggest selling album of all time with Greatest Hits. Their single “Bohemian Rhapsody” is year on year voted the best single of all time. Their classic stadium anthems “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” have become the most played songs at sporting events throughout the world, including dominating this year’s Olympic Games in London.

“Earlier on there were rumours of us splitting up, but I mean – f*** ‘em – how can you split up when you have an audience like this.” Freddie Mercury. Knebworth Park, August 9, 1986
With a quarter of a century having since passed, rock legends Queen are to return to play a second concert at the venue that provided them with the setting for one of their biggest and most historic concerts.
Queen’ Brian May and Roger Taylor today confirmed the band will headline the second day of this year’s Sonisphere Festival appearing at the festival home ground Knebworth Park, Stevenage, on Saturday July 7.
Knebworth was the setting for Queen’s final concert with Freddie Mercury in August 1986.
May and Taylor also confirmed that for this special one-off concert they will be joined by US singer-songwriter Adam Lambert.
Since first encountering each other during American Idol Season 8 in May 2009 where Lambert joined the band to perform We Are the Champions the two have repeatedly hinted at a future collaboration, most recently with Taylor telling Billboard Magazine “He (Adam) has grown into a really great performer with an astonishing voice with a range that’s great. We would like to work with him again. There’s nothing signed just yet but …it could be very exciting.”
After their brief meeting on American Idol, the potent chemistry between Queen and Lambert finally broke the surface when at the invitation of Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor Lambert joined them for the closing showcase at the recent MTV Europe Awards where Queen were present to collect their Global Icon award.
Their eight minute MTVE set ignited an immediate reaction across the internet with social network sites buzzing with excitement and campaigning for a more formal union between Queen and Lambert. The Sonisphere 2012 Knebworth stage will at last provide an eager public the opportunity to see May, Taylor and Lambert delve deeper into exploring their very evident artistic appreciation of one another.
Says Brian May: “Judging by my incoming mail, this decision will make a lot of people very happy. It’s a worthy challenge for us, and I’m sure Adam would meet with Freddie’s approval! And what better place to revisit, and walk those emotional paths than Knebworth? It will be a rush.”
Lambert adds: “I’m completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon. The thought of sharing the stage for a full set is so beautifully surreal. I’m honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie’s memory. He’s a personal hero of mine and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band. I know the evening will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band I know magic will be on display.”
Queen’s previous performance at Knebworth Park, close on twenty-six years ago, August 9, 1986, was set up to be the glorious last stop for the band’s monstrously successful Magic Tour which had spread out across Europe over eight weeks of that summer. Over a million people had already paid to see them.
Now riding one of the highest crests in their career, Queen drew a record crowd of 120,000, their biggest ever UK audience. Coming on the back of two stunning shows at Wembley Stadium – to this day regarded as among their finest performances – anticipation was high.
Queen delivered the goods, winding up the crowd by arriving above their heads in a custom decorated helicopter, and then going on to perform a Queen textbook set to a deliriously enthusiastic audience, winding up with an emotional ‘God Save the Queen’ and Freddie wishing his audience ‘sweet dreams’.
What no-one in that Knebworth Park audience, and as far as we know, not even the band could anticipate that day, was that a new chapter in Queen’s history was being written: after more than 700 concerts together, what was taking place was the very last live concert of Freddie Mercury with Queen.
With the exception of an appearance in 1988 with Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballe to launch Barcelona’s successful bid for the 1992 Olympic Games performing their duet ‘Barcelona’, Mercury would never again be seen performing to a public audience.
On what will undoubtedly rate as one of this summer’s most highly anticipated and emotionally charged concerts Queen’s Roger Taylor says: “I remember Knebworth as being the most incredible gig, with the most amazing audience and the sound on stage was utterly perfect. It was a fitting last stand before a live audience for Freddie. It will be a real challenge to complete the circle by returning with Adam.”
Shooting rockets. Blood spitting. Face Paint. Shiny Boots and utterly jaw dropping triumphant live shows: SONISPHERE is proud to announce KISS as Friday’s headliner. With a reputation for being perhaps the most flamboyant and entertaining band on the planet, the American Kings will bring their stage extravaganza to SONISPHERE as their only European performance of 2012.
For the final, Sunday night, SONISPHERE KNEBWORTH is proud to announce the legendary FAITH NO MORE as the headline act on the APOLLO stage. Mike Bordin, Roddy Bottum, Bill Gould, Jon Hudson and Mike Patton are poised to set KNEBWORTH on fire when they close the last night at SONISPHERE with their only UK appearance in 2012. Of their set Gould comments: “It was over 2 years ago when we decided to reform and play those amazing UK shows. The good news is, we’ve had a couple of years to improve our skills; moving our song to error ratio down 3.5 full percentage points. Watch out UK, we’re going to do it right this time!!”
Joining the three superb headliners are some of the biggest names from the world of rock and metal including:
WITHIN TEMPTATION – only UK show of 2012, EVANESCENCE – only UK show of 2012, THE DARKNESS, INCUBUS – only UK show of 2012, MARILYN MANSON – only UK show of 2012, ANDREW WK – only UK festival show of 2012, REFUSED – only UK show of 2012, MASTODON – only UK festival show of 2012, THE BLACKOUT and more.
As well as the exciting names from the world of rock, SONISPHERE once again shows it’s forward thinking nature, and invites musician/comedian TIM MINCHIN to headline the Saturday night on SATURN. Since his first appearance at SONISPHERE back in 2010 the TIM’s success has gone from strength to strength, resulting in his first UK arena tour, his first West End Musical (Matilda The Musical) and numerous high profile TV appearances. After the astounding success of Bill Bailey’s SATURN slot last year, TIM – with full backing band in tow – is bound to deliver a much talked about and highly memorable show at SONISPHERE.

QUEEN’S ROGER TAYLOR TO ANNOUNCE SEMI-FINALISTS FOR
“THE QUEEN EXTRAVAGANZA” TOUR NOVEMBER 9
NATIONWIDE TALENT SEARCH HEATS UP WITH ONE WEEK TO GO
OPEN AUDITIONS END NOVEMBER 7
SEMI-FINALIST ANNOUNCED NOVEMBER 9
PUBLIC VOTING BEGINS NOVEMBER 14
Six weeks ago, Queen drummer Roger Taylor announced the launch of a North American talent search looking for top-tier players to star in “The Queen Extravaganza” tour, an electrifying road show that will celebrate the band’s music and legacy. A plethora of vocalists, guitarists, drummers, bassists and keyboard players auditioned online at queenextravaganza.com, submitting video footage of themselves performing one of four classic Queen songs: “Killer Queen,” “Somebody To Love,” “Seven Seas of Rhye” and “I Want To Break Free.” With one week of open auditions remaining, Taylor continues to pour through the submissions and is preparing for the November 9th announcement of the lucky semi-finalists.
“What an amazing storehouse of talent we have unlocked,” said Taylor. “The standard is mind blowingly high, it’s really a thrill getting to discover some of them, keep them coming!”
The buzz surrounding “The Queen Extravaganza” tour has sparked worldwide interest with video submissions generating more than 6.4 million views to date. Television host Ellen DeGeneres was so impressed with the level of talent, that she invited one hopeful to perform his audition on her show. The contestant, Nashville’s Marc Martel, went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 3rd and gave a stunning rendition of Queen’s “Somebody To Love.” Fans around the country felt the same way, awarding Martel the MTV O Award last night for Best Fan Cover. His performance from The Ellen DeGeneres Show can be viewed here: http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2011/10/marc_martel_performs_somebody_to_love_1003.php
Unlike Round One, in which vocalists and musicians were allowed to audition by performing one of four Queen songs, Round Two will see each semi-finalist assigned a specific track.
* Vocalists must submit a video of themselves performing “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”
* Drummers must perform “One Vision.”
* Guitarists must play “Keep Yourself Alive.”
* Bassists must audition to “Another One Bites The Dust.”
* Keyboardists must perform “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
The semi-finalists will have between November 9 and 13 to submit their auditions. In another twist, Round Two auditions will be judged by the public. Between November 14th and 28th, fans can vote for their favorites at www.queenextravaganza.com , casting one vote per category. The top vote-getters will advance to the Final Round.
Those finalists will be flown into Los Angeles in early December, where they will perform live for Taylor and a panel of judges. More information on the final auditions to be announced shortly.
Launching in 2012, “The Queen Extravaganza” tour will feature three vocalists and a five-piece band and will be booked by powerhouse agency CAA. Taylor is fully hands-on, taking the role of producer and music director.
A small sampling from the many standout auditions submitted thus far:
Marc Martel (Nashville, TN)
Tristan Avakian (Toronto, ON)
Andrew Walls (Champlin, MN)
Austin Burcham (Los Angeles, CA)
David Yuter (Carlsbad, CA)
ABOUT QUEEN’S STUDIO ALBUMS:
As the centerpiece in the 40th anniversary celebration, Queen’s entire 15-album studio catalog is being reissued in a series of deluxe editions. Every note is being tweaked, every piece of artwork is being cleaned, freshened up and resourced, wherever necessary, with the legendary Bob Ludwig doing the remastering, working from the original source material. The first installment, comprised of the first five LPs (QUEEN, QUEEN II, SHEER HEART ATTACK, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, A DAY AT THE RACES) was released May 17, the second installment (NEWS OF THE WORLD, JAZZ, THE GAME, FLASH GORDON, HOT SPACE) was released on September 13 and the final deluxe box set installment (THE WORKS, A KIND OF MAGIC, THE MIRACLE, INNUENDO, MADE IN HEAVEN) is available on amazon.com on November 1.
Between 1984 and 1995 Queen released their last five studio albums and consolidated their reputation as the biggest, brashest and boldest band in the world. They achieved legendary status as they delivered THE defining performance of the century at Live Aid as well as headlining massive stadium concerts all over the world. Queen also released some of their best loved and most anthemic work in this period, before and after the passing of Freddie Mercury in 1991.
Hollywood Records will reissue deluxe editions of the five Queen albums from this period on November 1st as part of the band’s 40th Anniversary celebration – The Works, A Kind Of Magic, The Miracle, Innuendo and Made In Heaven in an exclusive box set.
Many Queen favorites were released during this period including “Radio Gaga” (the track from which Lady Gaga took her name), “I Want To Break Free” (complete with the infamous cross-dressing Coronation Street parody video that MTV banned in the US), “One Vision,” “A Kind of Magic,” “I Want It All,” “The Miracle” and “These Are The Days of Our Lives” (featuring Freddie’s haunting final video appearance).
These five albums cover the era when Queen were elevated to truly legendary status as they stole the show at Live Aid in front of a global TV audience of 1.9 billion people, and wowed audiences with subsequent headline shows at Knebworth and Wembley, the latter recently voted by the public as one of the most iconic events ever seen at the stadium. This was also a consistent period of commercial success with each of the five albums going platinum in the UK and A Kind of Magic and Made in Heaven each selling over 1 million copies.
As well as their huge UK gigs they continued the global domination of the late 70’s playing Rock in Rio twice to crowds of over 300,000 each time. On their subsequent Magic tour they sold over 1 million tickets around the world, and played the first ever stadium gig in Eastern Europe at the Nepstadium in Budapest in front of fans who hitchhiked from all over the Eastern Bloc to attend.
After Freddie’s death The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert saw a packed Wembley set alight again to the music of Queen once again, with stars from all over the world joining John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor on stage.
Subsequently The Mercury Phoenix Trust was founded to help distribute money raised from this concert for AIDS awareness. Since then, the Trust has raised and distributed over $15 million to help in the fight against AIDS. The charity has just created a truly unique initiative with the launch of the ‘Freddie For A Day’ Global Charity Network.
Queens 40th Anniversary year has kicked off in spectacular style so far with their first ever major exhibition “Stormtroopers in Stilettos” in London’s East End and kicked off with a star studded launch party attended by the likes of Foo Fighters and Jessie J.
A recent two part BBC TV documentary, “Days of Our Lives”, drew widespread rave reviews as Brian May and Roger Taylor looked back over their first 40 years in detail for the first time. The Guardian described it as ‘fantastic and moving’.
Meanwhile the bands first ten albums have been reissued to considerable acclaim. The Telegraph said of their early work, “Queen’s greatest music was extravagantly innovative, technically brilliant and created with a jeweler’s care.”
Rolling Stone Magazine gave the first set of reissues the magazine’s highest rating of five-stars, describing the collection’s “instrumental intensity” as a “compelling portrait of vehement and violent art.”
These last five studio albums highlight the diverse talent, musical ambition and global success of a band made up of some of the best songwriters, musicians and performers of all time.

The concert captures the group’s historic July 1986 two-night performance at London’s Wembley Stadium, where they gave an electrifying performance to 150,000 frenzied fans. The footage features stunning live renditions of many of Queen’s classic songs, including fan favorites such as “We Will Rock You,” “We Are The Champions” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
One year after their triumphant appearance at Live Aid, Queen (vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon) returned to Wembley for two consecutive sold-out concerts. Queen Live At Wembley Stadium documents the second night, July 12th, 1986. The footage highlights Queen’s dazzling performance, which blended older classics like “Seven Seas of Rhye” and “Tie Your Mother Down” with new audience favorites such as “Radio Ga Ga” and “Hammar To Fall.”
Queen Live At Wembley Stadium showcases the legendary rock band’s versatility, musical range and showmanship on their most successful tour. “The Wembley concerts were the pinnacle for us,” says May. “We were at our height band-wise, and Freddie had developed this phenomenal way of dealing with stadium audiences. Being back home in London playing two sell-out nights was such a big, big occasion for us. None us realized that this would be almost the last time we would play together.”

Between 1977 and 1982 Queen officially became the most successful band in the world, releasing some of the biggest and best songs of all time including ‘Tie Your Mother Down’, ‘Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy’, ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, ‘Bicycle Race’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, ‘Save Me’, ‘Play The Game’, ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, ‘Flash’ and ‘Under Pressure’ which features David Bowie.
On September 13, just 8 days after what would have been the 65th birthday of late legendary lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury, Hollywood Records will reissue deluxe editions of the five Queen albums from this period – ‘News of the World’, ‘Jazz’, ’The Game’, ‘Flash Gordon’ and ‘Hot as part of the band’s 40th Anniversary celebration.
These five albums were recorded as Queen’s success spread worldwide – to the USA, South America, Europe and Asia and are the sound of a band breaking through the crash barriers of their own limitless ambition. The early 80’s saw the band conquer South America for the first time, creating rock history when they played at the Morumbi Stadium in Brazil – then the largest paying audience for a single band anywhere in the world.
If the early 70’s and the first five albums Queens released represented the band’s hard-rocking years, then the late 70’s and early 80’s represented their hard partying era. As Brian, Roger, Freddie and John toured the world their reputation for off-stage rock’n’roll extravagance grew with stories of legendary party excess from Kensington to Copacabana informing the Queen mythology.
The Queen image changed too in the second half of the 70s. Infamously Sid Vicious bumped into Freddie Mercury at Wessex Studios where both Pistols and Queen are recording – ‘Ullo Fred – I see you’ve bought ballet to the masses then!’ Says Sid, eyeing up Freddie’s legendary ballet pumps, ‘Ah Mr Ferocious. Yes, doing my best dear’ retorted Freddie.
It was also during this period that one of the most iconic images in contemporary music was developed, when in 1980 Freddie Mercury grew perhaps the most famous moustache of modern times! Inspired by his adventures in the New York nightlife of the late 70’s, the moustache and attendant leathers completely reinvented the band’s look. Famously the moustache caused outrage among many fans that mailed him disposable razors!
Queens 40th Anniversary year has kicked off in spectacular style so far with a major art & photography exhibition ‘Stormtroopers in Stilettos’ in London’s East End. Meanwhile, the bands first five albums have been reissued to considerable acclaim.
Rolling Stone gave the first set of reissues the magazine’s highest rating of five-stars, describing the collection’s “instrumental intensity” as a “compelling portrait of vehement and violent art.”
Queen’s next round of remasters will highlight the more refined and diverse talent, musical ambition and global success of a band made up of some of the best songwriters, musicians and performers of all time.
