0 Staind – S/T (2011)
I’ll admit that I haven’t paid much attention to Staind over the last few years. After the release of 14 Shades Of Gray, I found the band heading in an uncertain direction. No longer sure of their voice or where their music was heading, I was disappointed and bored, and thus moved on to other bands. After hearing their latest single, “Eyes Wide Open,” I decided to give the band another chance and picked up a copy of their self-titled release. It was one of the best musical decisions I have made in recent years. Staind have found their current voice and the end result is spectacular.
Still fused fully in the dark side of rock, the recent change for Staind is the bands’ desire to unleash their anger in the music. Whereas past albums were dark and depressing, wondering how to survive the future, their latest disc is filled with fight. Songs like “Wannabe” and “Now” are anthems to haters and doubters that they’d better back off. Staind isn’t going to stand around and be your punching bag. They even take the time to call out those that would download their music for free (i.e. steal it) and then trash it online.
Blending grunge and hardcore rock, Staind’s latest record takes their enjoyable sound to a level not previously achieved. The crisp guitar solos by Mike Mushok obliterate any of his previous work and the structure of each of song is impeccable. “The Bottom” has a striking melody that sounds like a cross between Nine Inch Nails industrial rock and a Poison Power Ballad. It is a beautiful melody punctuated by Lewis’ amazing voice. “Now” is a solid, hard rocking smack in the face complete with finger shredding guitar work worthy of a Mastodon comparison. “Wannabe” is a war cry for the haters to go away and find somewhere else to waste their time. Hearing Staind call out the freeloaders was the highlight of the record.
Staind finds the band pulling no punches, and musically, it finds the band meshing the likes of which they haven’t since the late 90s. This is Staind at the top of their game and it’s a welcome thing of beauty. Lead singer Aaron Lewis’ voice is as powerful as ever. His singing ability has never failed to amaze me and even more so on Staind. Mike Mushok is firing on all cylinders, exploding through blistering guitar solos, and keeping the melodies in perfect harmony with the rest of the music. The rhythm section of Johnny April and Jon Wysocki (no longer a member of the band) round out the music nicely.
Less is more was a theory that the band obviously subscribed to, and it paid huge dividends. While Staind only comes with 10 tracks, each of these masterfully crafted beauties are works of art worthy of cherishing for several years to come. Had I given this record a chance sooner than 2012, it’s possible that it may have cracked my top 10 for 2011. Well, there’s always the top ten for the decade.

“Along with AEG Live, Right Arm is beyond excited to unleash the Carolina Rebellion lineup,” says Gary Spivack, co-executive producerof the festival for Right Arm Entertainment. “Like last year, it was our goal to make sure the 2012 lineup was stacked from top to bottom. Three stages of non-stop rock ‘n roll and a Friday night party to kick it all off…The ultimate rock festival in the Carolinas. Let the Rebellion begin!”

Based on 2011 attendee feedback, Carolina Rebellion organizers have implemented various upgrades and vast venue improvements to provide a premier concert experience at the multi-stage rock festival. The new centrally-located site provides plenty of space to expand, including more food and beverage stands, merchandise stands, restrooms and parking, and also offers more traffic routes to and from the event.
“When our fans speak, we listen,” commented Joe Litvag, co-executive producer of the festival for AEG Live. “We personally responded to every person who sent us comments, and because of that important feedback, our motto this year is ‘Let’s double it!’ Double the number of entrance points into the festival, double the number of concession stands, double the number of merchandise stands, and double the number of locations for free water…We’re taking the steps to make Carolina Rebellion an upgraded experience for everyone.”
In addition, all ticket prices will include parking to ensure quicker access to the parking areas, and earlier entry into the parking areas and will be allowed, along with earlier door times, to better alleviate the traffic and lines. The inclusion of the new Camping Packages will encourage fans to arrive on Friday starting at 10am and stay until Noon on Sunday, thereby relieving traffic congestion on Saturday.
Further improvements to amenities include: a larger box office area for will call pickup, shade locations in public areas and the Hangover Recovery VIP Lounge area inside the festival grounds to allow those with VIP Lounge tickets to have a special place to enjoy the event.
“Our sponsors mean as much to us as our fans do,” added Litvag. “And without the support of music-centric companies like Monster Energy, who present our two main stages at Rebellion, we couldn’t put a festival of this size and scope on for the people.”
Carolina Rebellion is also proud to be sponsored by Jägermeister, Hangover Recovery, and f.y.e. – for your entertainment (which will be on site selling CDs and DVDs and will host band autograph signings throughout the festival day). Carolina Rebellion is produced by Right Arm Entertainment and AEG Live, the same team that produces the highly successful Rock On The Range in Columbus, OH. Tickets for the 2011 inaugural Carolina Rebellion sold out more than one month in advance and attendance exceeded 30,000.

Staind’s latest release, the self-titled STAIND is a return to the band’s heaviest roots, and their most powerful and intense collection of songs to date. Revolver magazine called the album “a shocking crushing tour de force,” and Loudwire declared, “the band has returned to the grittier, bottom-heavy, down-tuned sound that defined its commercial breakthroughs, 1999’s Dysfunction and 2001’s Break the Cycle.”
STAIND – the band’s 7th studio album, debuted #5 on the Billboard Top 200. The debut single “Not Again” was the fastest rising single of the band’s career, hitting #1 on the active rock chart and staying there for 8 consecutive weeks. The new single, “Eyes Wide Open” debuted top 30 — while still having a track in the top 5. In the span of their career, Staind has sold worldwide over 15 million albums, had 9 top 10 singles across multiple radio formats — with four of those songs hitting #1, including the most played rock song of the decade, “It’s Been A While.”
Godsmack is considered one of the definitive alternative hard rock bands in contemporary music. The band’s 13 year legacy — guided by fearless founder and frontman Sully Erna — includes over 15 million albums sold — highlighted by scores of sold-out international concerts, countless successful tours, a remarkable 18 hit singles, 4 platinum records, 1 gold EP and four Grammy nominations.
Godmack’s THE ORACLE, the bands last album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart marking the 3rd consecutive album in a row by the band to debut at #1. Certified gold in the US, the album generated such hits as “Cryin’ Like A Bitch” and “Love-Hate-Sex-Pain.” The band is currently working on a new release slated for mid 2012.
Acclaimed as one of hard rock’s most explosive acts, Halestorm made a Top 5 debut on SoundScan’s “Hard Music” chart upon its 2009 release, simultaneously bursting into the top 40 on the comprehensive Billboard 200. The band’s follow-up album is set for release this spring. Formed by frontwoman Lzzy Hale and her brother, drummer Arejay Hale, Halestorm has made its bones as a major league hard rock outfit via countless North American gigs alongside such like-minded artists as Shinedown, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed and Stone Sour.

Staind and Indaba Music Invite Fans to Wail on New Single; Exciting Competition Allows Users to Add Guitar Solo to Hard Rock Heroes’ Acclaimed New Single, “Not Again”; Track Currently Impacting Rock Radio Outlets Everywhere, Heralding Hugely Anticipated New Album, “STAIND”; Album Pre-Orders Begin Today; “STAIND” Arrives Everywhere on September 13th
Flip/Atlantic recording group Staind is teaming with Indaba Music and Ultimate-Guitar.com for a truly extraordinary online competition. The contest invites fans to contribute their own guitar solos to Staind’s new single, “Not Again” — the first from their eagerly awaited new album, “STAIND.”
Beginning at 12 AM EDT on July 27th, contestants can submit their proposed solos via IndabaMusic.com — the pioneering online community for musicians. Submissions will end at 9 PM EDT on August 10th, at which point fans will have one week to vote for their favorite solos through August 17th at 9 PM EDT. A grand prize winner will be chosen by Staind themselves and unveiled on September 13th — the same day the multi-platinum band’s hugely anticipated new album, “STAIND,” arrives in stores and at all digital retailers. The winning guitarist will see the version of “Not Again” that incorporates their solo featured as a bonus track on the album at iTunes, along with a $1000 gift certificate to Guitar Center, a Mike Mushok signature model PRS guitar, a signed copy of the new album, and a one-month premium subscription to Ultimate-Guitar.com. Furthermore, 10 “Honorable Mention” solos will be chosen from the Top 20 selected by public voting, each of whom will receive a signed copy of “STAIND.” For complete contest details, please visit www.indabamusic.com/opportunities/staind-guitar-solo-opportunity.
“STAIND” — which marks the iconic hard rock band’s seventh studio album and first full-length release in three years — is available now for pre-order through the band’s website, www.staind.com. “Not Again,” the album’s first single, was the #1 Most Added track at active rock radio last week, with 71% of active rock stations adding the track, marking the band’s highest radio debut to date.
Produced by Johnny K — known for his work with 3 Doors Down, Disturbed, and Sevendust, not to mention his Grammy Award-nominated collaboration with Staind, 2008’s “THE ILLUSION OF PROGRESS” — and mixed by the legendary Chris Lord-Alge, “STAIND” stands as Staind’s most intense and powerful work to date. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Aaron Lewis recently described the album as “the heaviest thing we have recorded in a long time. It’s definitely one of the heaviest collections of songs that we have put together.”
“It’s completely different than the last record,” agrees guitarist Mike Mushok. “It’s more of a throwback to where we came from. I definitely think it’s fresh. It’s a modern-sounding version of a heavy Staind record. It’s pretty cool.”
“STAIND” has already earned advance acclaim from ARTISTDirect, which hailed the album as a “timeless masterpiece,” praising Lewis’ vocals for “reach(ing) heights that only legends can touch.”
In other news, Staind is slated to return to the stage with a trio of upcoming concerts, beginning September 2nd with a headline performance at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, Alaska. That show will be followed by a headline date at New Rock 103.9’s X-Fest 2011 at Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton, Ohio on September 17th and KROQ’s annual rock festival, Epicenter 2011, slated for September 24th at Irvine, California’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. For up-to-the-minute details, please see www.staind.com/events.
Staind’s decade-plus career has seen worldwide album sales in excess of 13 million and five #1 singles spanning three different radio formats. With honest, heartfelt lyrics, resounding guitar chords, and Aaron Lewis’ unmistakable voice, the New England-based band leapt to the forefront of American alternative metal with 2001’s hugely popular Flip/Elektra third album, “BREAK THE CYCLE.” Fueled by the hit singles, “Outside” and “It’s Been Awhile,” the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, ultimately going on to five-times RIAA platinum certification and worldwide sales of 7 million.
In addition to his continuing work with Staind, singer Aaron Lewis is a fervent road warrior, performing solo acoustic shows featuring both classic Staind songs like “It’s Been Awhile” and “Right Here” and songs from his solo EP, “TOWN LINE,” which debuted at in the #1 slot on the Billboard country chart, and #7 on the Billboard 200. “TOWN LINE” also earned Lewis two CMT video nominations — one for the lead single “Country Boy,” the video for which currently has 10 million views on CMT.com and YouTube alone.

1 “Stimulate This!” Staind, Shinedown, Chevelle, Halestorm and Atlantic Records Deliver Rock Fans Their Own Bail-Out; U.S. Tour Kicks Off July 1 in Peoria, IL, Featuring Discounted Ticket Prices and Local Value Add-Ins for Ticketholders
Hard rock mavens Staind, Shinedown, Chevelle and Halestorm will be teaming up this summer for the “Stimulate This!” tour, a four-band bill designed to offer fans maximum value at a minimal price.
Making its way across the U.S. beginning July 1 and extending through early September, the “Stimulate This!” tour will hit more than 40 U.S. markets, including some of the hardest hit by the recession. In a show of solidarity for their fans, the four bands have worked closely with the concert promoters to create a package of exceptional value for ticket buyers. Through their collective efforts, they’ve been able to maintain modest base ticket prices that remain mostly under $40 each — half the cost of comparable multi-band summer tour packages — with some venues offering lawn seats for less than $10. Additionally, each tour stop will include special promotions for ticket holders that will vary from market to market, but could include discounts on concessions at the venue during the show, store discounts at local retailers, and online rebates for band merchandise to name a few.
Inspired by the bands’ efforts to craft a cost-efficient tour for their fans during these hard times, Atlantic Records will give away a pair of tickets to five fans in every market who pose the best reason as to why they need a free night of rock. Fans can send their stories and enter the contest through Atlantic Records’ website, www.atlanticrecords.com. More details will be available soon on the website.
“Wall Street got its bailout; now it’s time for rock fans to get theirs,” said Staind frontman Aaron Lewis. “This summer, we want to give our fans one night where they can forget about everything else and experience a great rock show.”
“We’ve always said that we, as a band, only answer to one boss… and that’s everyone in the audience,” offers Shinedown’s Brent Smith. “It’s our job… our privilege to offer our fans an escape. Teaming up with these other great bands, we’re doing what we can to help lift everyone’s spirits in these tough times… the power of music can do that.”
Staind’s latest album, “The Illusion of Progress,” marks the band’s fourth consecutive studio album to debut in the top 3 on the Billboard 200 and features the #1 alternative rock song, “Believe.” The Atlantic recording group’s decade-long career is marked by more than 13 million in album sales worldwide and five #1 singles spanning three different radio formats. “The Illusion of Progress” is the band’s sixth studio album and the follow-up to 2005’s certified platinum “Chapter V.” Produced by Johnny K (3 Doors Down, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold), Staind recorded “The Illusion of Progress” in frontman Aaron Lewis’s home studio. Currently the third single from the album, “This Is It,” is climbing up the Active Rock radio chart. Staind is Aaron Lewis (vocals/guitar), Mike Mushok (guitar), Jon Wysocki (drums/percussion), and Johnny April (bass, vocals).
Atlantic recording group Shinedown’s latest single, “Second Chance,” is proving to be a cross-over smash, earning the Jacksonville, Florida-based band its highest chart position yet on the pop charts, coming in at #11 this week and rising — the track has already gone to #1 at Active Rock and #2 at Alternative. The companion video for “Second Chance” has climbed to #4 on VH1’s Top 20 Countdown and also enjoys airplay on MTV, MTV2, and Fuse. The title track from Shinedown’s current album, “THE SOUND OF MADNESS,” recently stormed to #6 at Active Rock, continuing the band’s staggering run of 10 consecutive Top 10 hits at the format. Produced by multiple Grammy award winner Rob Cavallo (Kid Rock, Green Day), “THE SOUND OF MADNESS” has been RIAA-certified Gold after debuting at #8 on the Billboard 200 upon release last summer. The album marks the band’s first foray into the international marketplace and has already been met with incredible enthusiasm, particularly in the UK: “The man is simply a masterful entertainer and frontman, a star,” enthused Kerrang! about lead singer Brent Smith; “There’s little doubt that Shinedown are among the most exciting new bands around,” declared Classic Rock. “THE SOUND OF MADNESS” follows the band’s platinum selling debut “LEAVE A WHISPER” and gold-certified followup “US AND THEM.” Shinedown is Brent Smith (vocals), Barry Kerch (drums), Zach Myers (guitars), and Eric Bass (bass).
Multi-platinum Epic recording artists Chevelle have just wrapped up recording their highly-anticipated new album “Letter From a Thief” which will hit stores later this summer. The Chicago-based trio spent seven weeks co-producing the new album with Brian Virtue (Jane’s Addiction, 30 Seconds to Mars, Deftones) in Nashville, Tennessee and are excited to hit the road and debut their new material. “Letter From a Thief” marks Chevelle’s fifth studio album and will follow up 2007’s smash “Vena Sera.” Formed in 1995, the Chicago-based band has remained a staple in the hard rock scene with six Top 5 Modern Rock hits under their belt, including the #1 songs “Send the Pain Below” and “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)” as well as fan favorites, “The Red” and “The Clincher.” Chevelle is Pete Loeffler (vocals, guitars), brother Sam Loeffler (drums), and brother-in-law Dean Bernardini (bass).
Atlantic recording group Halestorm just released their self-titled debut album. Produced by Howard Benson, “Halestorm” is an explosive collection of infectious hard rock anthems, a fiery flurry of sexy hooks and rough and tumble grooves. Steering this runaway train is singer/guitarist Lzzy Hale, who brings a hypnotic intensity to such tracks as the sensual first single “I Get Off,” which is bulleting up the top 30 on the Active Rock radio chart.

10 Staind – The Illusion of Progress (Release Year – 2008)
Staind has made us wait three long years for their sixth studio album, The Illusion of Progress. The band has three number one albums in a row, so they have a lot to live up to with this new disc.
Staind calls The Illusion of Progress the “most musical CD” they’ve recorded to date. While I don’t know if I agree with that statement or not, there are some tunes on this disc that have the potential to be hits for Staind.
The first song This Is It starts off with a heavy but moody track, “This Is It”. This tune has a grunge element to it, but it is pretty cool tune. I expect that this song will hit mainstream radio in the near future.
“The Way I Am” is mid tempo song that just plods along. It isn’t breaking any new ground. It isn’t a bad tune, but it just comes across as average to my ears.
“Believe” is the first single off of Illusion of Progress. This is a pretty solid tune that ought to be a hit for Staind. You can listen to Believe by clicking here.
“Save Me” is a slower paced song that also has some radio potential, if they recorded a clean version of the tune. Their is a lyric in this song, “save me for the fuck of it” that unintentionally jumps out of your speakers when you hear it.
At this point in the record, I was hoping for something a little more upbeat, and I got it, with the song “All I Want“. This is another solid tune from Staind.
“Pardon Me” has a sound that falls somewhere between Tool and Shinedown. This is another slow, and moody track that I just couldn’t get into.
At this point I started to get a little bored with this disc, as I could not find a tune that had the WOW factor I was looking for.
Most of Staind’s tunes have the down tuned guitars that is common place in modern rock today. The one thing that sets apart this band from most of the others is the fine voice of Aaron Lewis. The problem that I have with the Illusion of Progress is that most of the songs of their low to mid tempo range, and are a little more soft and mellow. This isn’t what I expected from Staind. Yes, some of the songs are good, but very few of them excite me very much. I was hoping for something a little heavier, and this disc never seems to get there. This may not be a problem for die hard Staind fans, but I would recommend streaming this album before picking it up.
